I'm by no means the #1 fan of Lady Gaga, but it's hard to deny how influential she's become in today's society. She definitely voices/reflects a lot of the sentiments of the younger and emerging generations. I'm almost positive that most of the angry/rude comments on this article come from an older demographic bitter by the fact that they're being replaced by a younger generation with a different mentality and way of life. I'm by no means saying that Lady Gaga and her comments fully reflect every single young adult, but there are some parallels between her and this rising liberal generation.
fed, you are absolutely, positively a moron of the lowest order. I am pretty sure Lady Gargoyle, who didn't even exist in the public eye prior to this year is NOT the voice of my generation. My contempt for her as a 19 year old is glacially apparent every time one of my idiotic siblings starts singing her praises. I hope her career is short-lived and her vapid appeal is replaced by the "next big thing" by the end of 2010. God, I can only hope...

IMHO, say what you want about her. She'll cry all the way to the bank, for sure. I've been a musician for 50 years and I believe there is talent there, maybe not your style, but she is talented. Reminds me of Dolly Parton, has enough understanding of the music industry and uses that understanding to her advantage. Over the top, yes, but it's working for her. She does nothing at random. As for her comments, I actually get them. Now you can say something nasty about me if that'll make you feel better.

I think her creativity was already stolen... she stole it directly from Madonna! Even that hairdo in the photo is pure Madonna, it was Madonna's signature hairdo already stolen from Marilyn Monroe, Gaga just wears it a little bigger and longer. What's up with people's obsession with comparing every female pop stars to Madonna? Christina Aguilera was called the next Madonna, and so was Britney, Lady Gaga is next in line, but years down, there will be somebody else to come along that you will say "She is the next Madonna." Why even compare this woman to the likes of Madonna when she doesn't even have the music and the longevity (it has only been 2 years) to back it up?
She's a Madonna wannabe, no one comes as close to being a direct copy of her. Besides the hair and crazy outfits, Madonna also used to say some very off the wall things just to stir it up. I like both of them.

I like some of her songs, they are really fun and catchy and her music videos and performances are great, but I don't get some of you fans that act like the type of music she is making stands in the same class as Mozart and that her lyrics should be in the same league as Shakespeare. Lady GaGa tries WAY TOO HARD! The comparison with Madonna are accurate. However, Madonna (who did it first) does sometimes go back to being just a human being (like her most recent appearance on Letterman). GaGa, though, apparently feels she can't be seen by the public without doing something totally outrageous. "If they're looking at me...well, I've got to do something crazy to MAKE them look at me and KEEP LOOKING!!" And the gullible public looks, of course, the same way they can't keep from looking at a car crash.

EXACTLY. She tries way too hard and comes off as so self-important. She does need to tone it down, because seriously after awhile it gets so old to have her yet again wear another outrageous outfit and to yet again say something that's off the wall. The Grammy's are irrelevant. They do not represent 99.9% of the music that exists in the world. As for the MTV awards......they do not represent 99.9999999% of the music out their. BTW, how can MTV have a "music video" award show when the entire network is dedicated to "reality" shows. As for Lady Gaga...yes, she's making money, but as for being shocking, creative, or new, that song-and-dance has been done before many times over. Any performer who has to "market" being shocking and outrageous is neither. Like most current pop stars, she'll fade into oblivion once the new cohort of tweens finds some other trite outfit to follow.

I don't understand the constantly referencing of Madonna as talented. Madonna did the exact same thing with LESS talent. she does not/did not ever writer her own music. She has pretty much always taken other peoples songs and sang and danced to them. Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, etc. are all doing the same thing. The difference is (I believe) that Lady Gaga writes most if not all of her own music. Madonna and Lady Gaga are using the "shocking" and somewhat off kilter perspective on the world as a way of "marketing" themselves .. nothing more ... nothing less. So I'm a little baffled as to why that qualifies as LESS talent than Madonna.
I don't think some of you GaGa-bashers "get" her at all. The entirety of GaGa - everything she does, everything she says, everything she wears - is a phenomenal marketing ploy. She is extremely smart and knows this kind of thing will get her attention. It's a giant put-on, a Halloween event. That being said, it makes her even more fascinating. I just love watching her to see what she's going to do next and then smile at the attention she gets. I think the Lady must be secretly smiling under her masks as well. What a bravo performance!

As a matter of fact, I do not drink. I understand that lots of people have vices, but what makes hers influential? I have seen nothing in her short career thus far that makes her special other than her god awful annoying songs.

Kudos to you for not drinking, I don't either. I am not trying to be rude, but what do you mean? She has brought forth a voice for kids, and gays alike. She has donated all the money from some of her concerts to Haiti, not to mention oil clean up, and protested against the Arizona Law, and BP. She has brought awareness to AIDS, and has supported celibacy in youth. So what if she did drugs, everyone in California does, none the less even our president has, plus most of population. That is the world we are living in. Many young teenage girls look up to her, and by being so crazy, she has reminded kids, once again, of something kids forget, that being different is okay. I love Lady Gaga, and I am forever a little monster!

Hey Russ, did you know that not only does she write her own music, but she designs her own costumes...she's been playing and writing since she was a child!!!! She has gone to exclusive music schools... and just because she is Lady Gaga now, doesn't mean you can't go onto youtube and check her out before she became GAGA. She was and is amazing.......what have you done with your life that you can say has touched millions of people???? Jerk!

I'm tired of people saying she has no talent. She does have talent, she is a very acomplished songwriter and pianist. But the majority of her songs before the "Gaga" phase were things that appealed to people in Europe, especially places like France and Germany. That stuff doesn't sell well here so she changed it up and created "Lady Gaga." So obviously she has the talent because she changed her entire repotior (sp?) without a hitch. Many of the songs you hear started off as more "highbrow" concert pieces that did well overseas and changed to excite the youth and comnsumerists of America.
Is she weird? Yes, but even she admits that.
Is she outlandish and over-the-yop? Yes, and she admits that too.
Is she an untalented hack? No. She has more talent for her passion (music) than you probably have in your whole life.

Marco, not sure how old you are but over 40 years ago there was another flamboyant performer who did over-the-top things, wore outlandish costumes and constantly said outrageous things. He was obviously gay though never really said so (the times and all). He was a piano virtuoso but chose to ham it up on schmaltzy tunes to please a mass, low-brow audience. He took a lot of heat from high-brow types and snarky comments in the press. And no, it wasn't Elton John. When once asked about how he "felt" about the criticism, Liberace replied, "oh I'm crying...crying all the way to the bank." Fast forward through the years and you get Elton, Madonna and now, this trollop and a hundred lesser wanna-bees. Some have real creative talent, some don't but have simply got the shtick down pat.
Other comments here have it right. The whole shtick is a calculated formula and commercial strategy to sell to another generation of young people who fancy themselves fiercely individualistic but are in fact part of a lowing herd. There is nothing so conformist as an "individualistic" youngster, and not so young youngsters in our culture these days, and if you can find a formula to appeal to a segment of them you will get rich. The best kind is that, like Gaga and her predecessors, allow the person to flatter themselves that they're rebelling and breaking away when they are really just filing into the cattle chute with all the rest.

Whoa, whoa, wait a minute! Have you actually seen her perform live? Why is Lady Gaga such a unique talent in today's shyte, computer-simulated music industry?
1. Lady Gaga can sing. Really well. And without the need for computers in the studio to fix inaccurate intonations (off-key singing). Just download her live SNL performance - this is no Ashlee Simpson lip sync'ing no-talent, wannabe.
2. Lady Gaga actually plays an instrument: The piano. Really well. Not just a couple of chords but this woman actually knows what she is doing.
3. Lady Gaga backs up her talent with true Vaudevillian showpersonship. She has the panache of Madonna but with much more than average talent (sorry, Madge).
I will go as far as to say that Lady Gaga is not the Madonna of her generation, she is the Elton John of her generation!
