Eminem opens up on Brittany Murphy's death

In the 15th anniversary issue of Vibe magazine, Eminem admits that he's still haunted by the death of his "8 Mile" co-star - and former flame - Brittany Murphy.

"It was crazy...It's crazy because at one point we were very close and she was a really good person," the rapper says of Murphy, who died December 20 at age 32 from pneumonia compounded by anemia and prescription and over-the-counter drugs.

"It's crazy when you see things, not just with her but just all these things that are happening in Hollywood with people in music, with people in acting," he said. "Famous people are overdosing at alarming rates and that almost sounded like a commercial. Wow."

Thirty-seven-year-old Eminem, who shared the big screen with Murphy in 2002, has also endured his own battles with drug addiction, and blames the problem on doctors who enjoy basking in a star's spotlight.

"Doctors will kiss your ass because they love the celebrity. 'Oh, I can call up Eminem and get him on the phone right now. Oh, hi Marshall, how are you doing? Do you need that [prescription]?'" he explains. "There are doctors that will give you certain things just because of who you are."

WAIT a minute. FOr all the idoits who want to say this is not the doctors fault are stupid. Sorry but doctor has the final say. A doctor has the POWER to give the drugs or not. I do not care what someone ask for, it is up to the doctor to say NO. IT is call MEDICAL ETHNICS. To defend a doctor in this matter is like someone who want to defend a bad cop for killing someone for running a red ligh (running a red light is breaking the law and the individual should "know better" however a cop has to go by ethics and the law). E is right, it is the doctor fault. And this issue is NOT limited to celebs either so people need to stop trying to make it so. this is now an AMERICA problem.

I'll fix something i said just now – obviously physical pain and things like that you need medication for – but that can also be way over-abused as we've all seen. And another thing i forgot to mention... the people at the FDA who approve all prescription drugs – mental or physical – have stocks with pharmaceutical companies so it's a rigged system. Just another way that drugs are abused.

I'm writing this way after the article so it may never be seen but I'll say it anyway. Everyone is of course responsible for their own actions but that doesn't change in this case the doctor's responsibility either. One thing that people need to wake up to is that doctors absolutely make money doling out prescriptions – it's easier to see a lot of people in one day and just give them a prescription that will be an 'easy fix' and then call in the next person and just bill the insurance companies. Do you know that the largest marketing clients for big Pharmas and prescription drug dealers are physicians and regular medical doctors? It's sick but true. You can't fix problems people have with pills. And the reason you see it all over the place with celebrities is because it's becoming rampant and of course the people everyone sees are the celebrities. Something needs to be done about it. You can check out what to do at http://www.cchr.com.

There will always be doctors who'll provide drugs inappropriately to people who'll pay them enough to do it. For every well-trained, respectable physician there are a bunch more that trained at D list medical schools, won't be hired, much less retained at good medical centers and they aren't good enough to maintain profitable private practices. Few if any of the doctors accused of prescribing drugs to celebrities seem to be rocket scientists or respected doctors at the best hospitals.

You all need to understand that if a person is so addictive on drugs how are they going to make a sound decision on stopping when doctors are constanly suppling them the drugs. If they have no doctor to turn to that can tell them no you had enough then maybe there is hope. But as long as there are greedy doctors which there will always be then this epidemic will always be a problem. So E was correct however he never denied he was addicted my assumotion is that he meant it will always be hard to stop when you have greedy doctors. Yes strength comes within that indivual to stop but thats not easy when they are already addicted to the point they dont even know who they are. For that reason it is the doctors fault when they see how strung out they are but still say yes for money.

First of all, he doesn't have songs, they are rants; one-sided diatribes. Second, if you want to understand how someone is, observe how they treat their family. His treatment of his mother is how I will remember him.
Lastly, and I know I'm oversimplifying, good "songs" are ultimately supposed to make you a better person. His raps can be very catchy with clever word play, but in the end, they are angry and self-absorbed.

Okey dokey then, Slim made fun of Moby "Nobody listens to techno!" because he could. Artistic license and all. Addiction as disease really kind of refers to the "disease process" a progressive process. Yes a disease doesn't make one pick up a crack pipe or chew Vicodin like mentos, it refers to progressive worsening signs, symptoms and probable outcomes. Opiates (see vicodin) cause respiratory suppression, aspiration, decrease cardiac effort all which can cause pneumonia. Large doses of any mind altering drug tend to cause poor nutritional choices, anorexia (the DISEASE, NOT THE HOLLYWOOD DIET PLAN! A description of the ratio of endogenous fat to muscle/height) as well poor social choices and causes one to fall asleep in inappropriate places and participate embarrassing behavior. Some M.D.'s over prescribe, some under prescribe, some prescribe just right. I'm sure there are some who will prescribe any way a person wants should that person have some measure of fame or wealth. I wouldn't know any though I have neither. Whats remarkable and admirable is Eminem's candidness regarding his own battle with substance abuse both in interview such as this and through his art. It's honesty, a rare trait. Bravo!

The thing is, Ms. Murphy didn't die of a drug overdose. She died of pneumonia. If you've ever had pneumonia, you'll know how difficult it is to breathe with. Many prescription medicines used to treat severe coughing have narcotics in them so that your lungs relax. Many over-the-counter medicines contain drowsiness-causing antihistamines. These also can cause breathing difficulty. Add anemia to the mix, where the person's body is weakened, and you get lung failure.

Listen, I realize this is about a serious subject so I don't understand why this turned into a MOBY forum. By the way, Moby is the most talented musician on the planet and possibly a genius. The only person more talented and successful than Eminem in 2002 was Moby. Eminem's beef with Moby was out of jealousy. Eminems insult to Moby was that nobody listens to techno which is hilarious because Moby has released more than 21 albums and out of 21 albums only his first album was techno based in 1991. So people, before you discuss a subject make sure you know what you are talking about. To be someone who doesn't know what they are talking about supporting someone who doesn't know what they are talking about are the people that are the majority on this planet. Idiots.

I can see what Eminem is saying. Yes people are to blame for their own undoing when it comes to drugs BUT there are enablers that contribute to that and that has to stop. If you enable someone you are just as guilty as the person if not more because you are in the state of mind to know better. Doctors also should be careful about prescribing certain drugs because given a certain situation it can be more harmful than helpful...and as a doctor..they should know that.

Well when you rap about drugs and alcohol and play roles in movies that involve drugs and alcohol and surround yourselves with people who do the same thing day in and day out. you end up with a meaningless life and lots of money. which leads to depression and then the drugs. sadly she wont be the last. don't blame the doctor cause you got drug problems (illegal or over the counter) pharmacists will give you all the information you need about a certain drug and what you can and cant take it with. we need to take responsibility for our own actions not putting the blame on someone else. best advise repent and believe the Gospel of Jesus Christ

I think Eminem has it pegged right on the nose , because of an Actors / Actress's or Singers Status Dr's will give them what ever they want Case in point MJ , I think Dr's should have a dam good reason for giving out any Narcotic Drug to anyone & that person should be tested for over use , yes you can be tested for such a thing you agree to those terms or you do not get them PERIOD , Im a Recovering Drug Addict I'm Not Famous , but I watch very carefully what Dr's give me & having had a heart attack 3 years ago I'm on a crap load of medications for my heart & blood pressure , these drugs I researched very carefully , my point is no one is watching these Hollywood folks there Drug uses are going under the radar & there Dr's don't seem to care , then one thing leads to another & you've got a Star in Jail & going off to rehab for 90 days , something needs to be done before we loose more great stars ..........................

Wow – where in the above article does it actually quote Eminem as blaming the doctors? All I see is CNN SAYING he blames the doctors. The quote is just him describing how easy it is to get scripts if you're a celeb. He also doesn't say Brittany Murphy died of an overdose – he says "not just her but ALL THESE THINGS that are happening..." Looks more to me like a generalization regarding the number of celebrities that seem to be dying young.

Eminem is all over the place of late and if you had read any other thing besides the above, contextually messed up blurb, you'd know that he fully acknowledges where his addiction stem from and it's not his doctors.

Same with JFK (the president). He was pumped up with so many drugs for his back by his own "Dr. Feelgood", and it caused him unending problems from side effects. In those days people didn't understand the harmful side-effects of medicines to the extent that they do today, but still..... There is no excuse these days, though. You can't trust MDs to make you healthy, and half the time its the medical system that makes you worse.

The same technique used to write drum fills are used to write Rap lines. Yes some rapper have no clue what they are doing but their producers sure do. Now with OBAMORON's SICK CARE PLAN- it'll be easier to get drugs. SCAMerica is alive and well and the only hope is for the Methane Gas Explosion in the Gulf to form a tsunami and wipe out the whole country. Then, we'll all be dead and be with Brittany- who was brain washed by her whacked out husband. But, of course- religion is the biggest scam of all– so we'll all wind up as bug food soon enough– one way or another. Hopefully, the tsunami will wipe out all the bugs– but probably not... I think both doctors and addicts are at fault. Doctors and drug dealers push these things despite health risks for selfish business, and addicts are stupid enough to not care about the side affects they will cause and only worry about a quick fix. There isn't a final answer in who is to blame, but ultimately someone decides their own fate when it comes to drugs. You are an addict not because you were offered drugs, but because YOU decided to take them.

However in this artical I dont think Eminem was shifting the blame. I was simply stating my opinion to the ongoing battle on this comment board.

Also @e- Does calling people 'level 1 thinkers' make you feel intellegent? It makes you sound arrogant and empty-headed.

Look most of you borderline dysfunctional retards. Addicts are addicts, it's there problem, they made the choice to become an addict. The issue here is doctors feeding this addicts and giving them whatever they want. They are no different than the drug dealers on the corner, minus they went to college. Regardless of who is at blame, there is an issue with doctors over prescribing these drugs to celebrities, and there is no reason this should be over looked just because they have an MD

He was not blaming docs for his own addiction. It sounded more like he was blaming Brittany's doctor. Yes, the addiction is the addict's fault, however if you have a doc willing to prescribe you anything you like it makes it a lot easier to feed the addiction. Doctors are supposed to help you get better, not enable the addiction. If they are enabling that is a real problem. That is the last thing an addict needs. No, it is not entirely the doctors' fault, but they do get some of the blame.

Unless the doctor literally shoved it down your throat, you have no one to blame but yourself. Go on the "interwebs" and look up the drugs the doctor is prescribing you. Take responsibility for your own life. If you let someone else have that much control and influence over you then you have much bigger issues...

If you think that BIG Pharma and Physicians aren't responsible for creating their fair share of addicts you should do a bit more research. I wonder what else we'll hear in the next 10-20 years about all the damage ADD meds and antidepressants cause. I think Eminem is taking responsibility for his substance abuse but he is stating that the Dr's have a part too. Look at Heath Ledger, Anna Nicole and many many others. There has to be another way. An addiction is a disease, not a choice, and whoever says different has never battled addiction before. Doctors are over prescribing these drugs and are acting as an enabler. They bypass the guidelines to give these celebs whatever they want. e.g.; there is no reason doctors should be prescribing 3 months worth of flexeril every month. It's obvious to the doctor that their patient is abusing these drugs, and still feed the drugs.

No one dies of heroin (or any other opiate) withdrawals. It's uncomfortable, it's not fun, but it's not lethal. Depressant withdrawals are the potentially lethal withdrawals, and those are due to seizure activity. Thousands of soldiers came back from Vietnam with RAGING heroin habits on doses practically orders of magnitude higher than the doses of even the hardest hitting American junky, and they came home to their families, felt crappy for a couple days, and went about trying to re-build lives for themselves and their families. Really. The American healthcare system was braced for this massive problem- which didn't happen. Sure, now that it's all over TV/movies that it's deadly, addicts experience a much worse subjective experience, because they expect it.... because they read crap like these threads.
Not only am I a legit scientist...now- but I'm also a former junky, and underground chemist. The amount of disinformation and urban legends about dope is sickening... quite literally. Something shows up in a movie, on TV, or on the internet, and all the sudden the feebs think it's scientific gospel.

Actually, for most people, the drug/addiction makes the ultimate decision. If it were so simple, to say "Nah, I'm good" when a junkie sees themselves hit rock bottom, do you think we would need Alcoholics, or Narcotics, Anonymous? I've been a member of a few different forums which are populated by many drug users, from first time/mild to rock bottom/junkie. Trust me, most of those people at the bottom, don't want to be there. Personally, I think it's from our overmedicated society. Everything's a disease, even alcoholism or the inability to pay attention. When people are responsible for their own actions, then yes, they will have the ultimate decision. For most people, that day will probably never come.

Anyone who's a good enough manipulator can get a doctor to prescribe them painkillers when it's unnecessary, blaming doctors for your addiction is a weak way to overcome it. Eminem knows like any other addict that the problem isn't anyone else, but it's yourself so I have no idea why he's blaming doctors. He's not wrong about their abuse of their practice, but it's certainly not their fault if you're an opiate addict.

If you listen to his songs, yes, you will hear Em take responsibility for his own addiction. But as will all addicts, that is where is should start and stop. I agree. To place any of the blame on someone else is absolving you of the blame. No one forced his mouth open and shoved pills down his throat. Me being a former addict myself, I can speak from experience when I say that until I figured out what I loved more in life, the choice to do drug was all on me. And moving or making new friends didn't do anything to stop me until I made the choice to stop. It's good that Em is off drugs now, but with a mind set like that, it won't be to long before he's blaming the doctors for he next relapse.

Sometimes, addiction or dependence is a doctor's fault. This happens when a doctor decides to give a patient who is in pain painkillers in order to shut that patient up and get them out of their office, rather than take the time and energy to make an accurate diagnosis and treat the underlying cause of the pain rather than just the pain itself. The diagnosis might be difficult to make, or the illness rare, and/or the doctor simply sees too many patients every day to take care of each one correctly. This happens very, very often. A person who wouldn't have needed all of these pills is handed them, and that person believes that this is the correct thing to do because a doctor knows what's best. Doctors are people, and they can be lazy and they can make mistakes.

Being a doc stinks these days – there are no good test to prove whether some1 has pain or not and Im obligated to treat them with what I have available if nonaddictive meds arent working AND I dont have a legitamate reason to suspect some1 if trying to manipulate me. And I have 10-15 min to figure this all out. This abuse/dependence problem spans all economic and racial profiles – its not a celebrity problem – its a problem everywhere.

Really? I've got a totally f***** up back at 29 years old, and I can't get ANY doctor to prescribe me ANYTHING except Ultram, which helps about as much as 1 aspirin. I didn't need manipulation, so I didn't use it. When I was denied, I tried manipulation the next time. Then they gave me Ultram, which is worthless. I need to meet some of these doctors you speak of that are so easily manipulated and handing out drugs, because I NEED them and can't get them except on the black market. Doctors are afraid to prescribe opiates a lot of the time b/c the FDA is all over their back, due to the fact that anyone can sue a doctor if they get "addicted" to the medicine they are prescribed. You can't tell me it's not the truth, to a certain degree, because I have actual problems and don't even like opiates that much. In fact, my mother is a cripple, and they won't give her anything except Tylenol-3 (codeine in a VERY small dose). I understand that for a black market to exist for opiates, they must be coming from SOMEONE, so my question is, where are these doctors you're talking about?
