Jennifer Hudson goes from size 16 to size 6

You know those Weight Watchers commercials starring Jennifer Hudson, where she talks about winning at weight loss?

It looks like the former "American Idol" contestant is far from all talk. Hudson, 28, landed the on the cover of InStyle Makeover, and she's showing off all of her hard work in a skintight banded dress. The actress went from a size 16 to a size 6.

And if that seems like a lot of change, Hudson said she has a more radical urge to switch up her hairstyle.

“I’m actually thinking about shaving my head," Hudson admitted. "Because I feel I’ve got a good structure now [gingerly feels cheekbones]. My cousin’s a beautician, and she always tells me, ‘You could wear any hairdo.’ So I’m thinking, What if I shave my hair? Not completely off, but low. I think that would be so hot.”

But her fiance and father of her nearly year-old son, David Otunga, may not take to her new 'do too kindly; he's still trying to adjust to her new physique, Hudson said. "David doesn’t like change. He tells me I have no breasts anymore. He tries to feed me," she said.

In reality, though, Hudson is happy where she is now, and doesn't have plans to shed any more weight. "I don't want to lose any more weight, and you're never going to see me skinny," Hudson told the magazine. "I think this is a good, natural size for me."

To read more about Hudson's transformation, pick up the new issue of InStyle Makeover, on newsstands Friday, August 6.

I find it interesting that people on here keep saying that fat women want to lose weight for health reasons. The truth is that the majority of heavy women lose weight so they can get a man or so they can actually wear attractive clothes. People on here need to get real. NOBODY that "needs" to lose weight does it because they think they're unhealthy. If they cared about health they wouldn't have stopped paying attention to what they put in their mouths and they would never have gotten fat in the first place.

I bet her fiance is more worried about her weight loss' effect on the balance in their relationship than he is about her breasts. When a woman loses a drastic amount of weight and suddenly is smoking hot (not that she wasn't before, but you know what I mean), the spouse often has a hard time dealing with it. Major insecurities seem to surface. Sadly, many men would prefer their girlfriends/wives to stay chubby because it's easier on their egos. I hope Jennifer's relationship can survive this. She looks great, is surely healthier, and deserves happiness. Way to go Jennifer!

OK people, I just wanna say that it's very common for people to resist change. Jennifer changed her body and 1/2 of society is happy for her, while the other 1/2 is angry that she didn't stay overweight. It doesn't matter. It is her body and her decision. BTW, I went from a size 20W at 5'5 (225lbs) to a size 8 (155lbs). I look so much better and feel healthier. When I was heavy and in denial, I hated thin people and I was just as defensive. I only looked into the mirror but never looked at actual photographs of myself with other people. Once you get tired of being the biggest one and you actually look at those photographs and see what you really are, you will finally get moving and take some action to lose weight. I can tell you that I love my body now and I'm pretty sure Jennifer loves her body now too. For others to say that she is too skinny or that they liked her better fat, obviously, is a cry for help from them that they are jealous and not satisfied with their own bodies. I was that way, too, when I was fat. VERY ANGRY AND DEFENSIVE. I also hated most men because I knew I could never meet their skinny standards. Funny thing is, most men find me attractive at this size. I assumed I would have to be a 0-4 size. I think a 6 or 8 looks good on me, but it is everyone's personal preference. Do it for yourself and stop being haters, Ladies!!!!!!!

Says Hudson: "I don't want to lose any more weight, and you're never going to see me skinny". Um...excuse me? Size 6 is skinny (coming form a size 6 person!!) No wonder girls in our society have messed up body issues....if celebrities are saying even a size 6 isn't skinny!

As long as Jennifer lost the weight for the right reasons, then more power to her. She looks gorgeous; then again, she was beautiful before. You can see her confidence in these ‘after’ pictures but she must have been a very confident woman from the start to be able to shine in the Hollywood spotlight as a heavier woman.

On another note, weight discrimination is an extremely prevalent form of discrimination – and that’s pretty obvious from the comments on this board. People are totally open about their biases and there is no PC-ness in our society that would discourage them from being so. I think it’s human nature to compare yourself to others, find flaws, point them out and thereby elevate your own status. And of course, an overweight person is an easy target. Some people who have never dealt with a weight issue, think it's all black and white (i.e the just step away from the doughnut mentality). I have no patience and don't pay much attention to those people. They probably eat totally unhealthy foods and don’t exercise but are fortunate enough to have a metabolic structure that prevents them from picking up weight as quickly as others. That being said, if you are overweight, you need to take responsibility for actions and make changes if you want to be happier. There is no quick fix, no magic wand, just a lot of hard work.
A lot of the comments here are disgusting but they're honest in that they reflect the raw and real sentiment of many thin Americans. No wonder our society is f-uped. We push McDonalds to make money but then tell you in the same breath you're unsightly and need to lose weight so I don't have to look at your fat. That is why you have to lose weight for the right reasons. Not to satisfy society but to feel stronger, more energized and improve your health for your own well-being and that of the people who love you. Good luck Jennifer!

It's because all women are built differently. My ex was 5'7 115 and Asian, she wore a size 0. My ex-ex was 5'6 105, and wore a size 6 cuz she was Latina and Latin women have curves in different places.

If you are 5'8, 123 and wear a 10-12 that tells me you have a nice full round butt, and plenty have plenty of guys lookin down your shirt to check out those Small/full D's 🙂

"I encourage you to visit a vintage clothing store and try on a dress in that size from that era. You'll find it comparable to a *gasp* size *6* in today's fashions."

Uh...no. Not in the least is a size 14/16 from Marilyn Monroe's time frame equivalent to a size 6 today. That's full on stupid talking. Structure of clothing has changed, and vanity sizing has occurred, but Monroe was closer to a current day 10 than a 6. Also, bear in mind Marilyn (and other ladies of the era) wore very structured undergarments that held stuff in, propped it up and essentially created that hourglass shape that vintage dresses require. Today's figure has difficulty fitting into those garments not because they were "so much smaller" but because we don't wear girdles or corselettes.

I'm frightened by the hatred that has spewed from this article. Size 16 is NOT "morbidly obese" nor would I even consider it "fat". It definitely is not deserving of the bile that has erupted here. Track star healthy? Probably not. But nonetheless there are plenty of women who are size 16 who are completely healthy. Just as there are plenty of puking size 6's who are completely not. It's individual.

At the end of the day I'm curious why all of you care so much to invest such mean-spirtied comments. It's a sad commentary on how ugly society has become.

Females stop blaming men for your insecurities because they can only say what they like but you choose to either stay and deal with or move on..We all choose to be whatever weight we are and if you aint happy with what you are then fix it, their is so many outlets out there..Beautiful comes in all differnt shapes and sizes but you have to be happy with yourself so others can also..I've never seen hate helped anyone feel better about themselve or make them a better person..Being small comes with its flaws like being overweight does, we gotta work to maintain it.The great thing about life is that you can change it, so stop hating and do what you have to so you can be happy with yours..

If you are over a 35 inch waist you are obese. Only in America can people look at someone and degrade them for getting healthy and saving their life. Obesity leads to diabetes, heart disease, strokes etc. If you can't celebrate her transformation then maybe you need to get the tape measure out yourself, then go to the doctor and have a check-up. If somebody quit smoking would you berate them for not being in the smoker's club anymore. People in this country are nuts.

This is a heated post. We all know that healthy is better, of course! But we should all know by now that just because you're thin doesn't mean you're healthy. At 5'10 and size 14, I"m just fine, thanks. Long arms, long legs, not big in the breast, hips, or booty department. So...I'm not "curvy". And at size 16 which is what I was last year, I would still not be considered curvy, but overweight. Christina Hendrix is curvy. Jennifer H was curvy. Not all bigger women are curvy. There are different body types. Not sure if people ever think about that. No matter what size I am I would never be curvy, big or small. And size 6 is thin. Really it depends on your body type. At 5'10, medium frame, I'd look like walking death as a size 6.

JRatt....there IS nothing attractive–physically– about a size 16 because you MUST have big thighs that rub together, a dangerously large waistline that is a sure indicator of future risk of heart disease and a high body fat percentage that will send you on your way to diabetes...would you like to tell me if you find THAT attractive?
Like I said earlier– ones' weight does not determine their worth as a human being, but if you REALLY love your GF ( who I am sure is a lovely person), you will want her to be around awhile and it is common knowledge how these excess weight negatively impacts health...and excess weight also affects self esteem. Any woman who says she is happy being fat is lying.

She looks great and does not need to lose anymore. However, I feel that this will be another Oprah rollercoaster. Remember the times she woudl lose alot of weight, only to put it right back on? Being a former fatty, from size 18 to a size 10 and still a 10, I know how hard it is to keep it off. I wish her the best of luck keeping it off, but usually a drop from a size 16 to a 6 is usually back up to at least a size 12. Yes, I will wait and see; hopefully, the pure love of eating all of those "comfort foods" will not be her downfall like it was for Oprah and Kirstie Alley. Just look up Kirstie from years ago; she was as small or smaller than Jennifer.

Oh, I just went back up and read the jerk boyfriend's remark about her NOT having breasts. She still has plenty in the picture. If he thinks those are NOT breasts, I would love to have that much "non-breasts! LOL!

I agree with those who think she's a hypocrit. She came out all proud big and beautiful, perfectly happy with her size, blah blah that she didn't care about hollywood's expectations and what not and the first thing she did after having a baby is lose so much damn weight she is unrecognizable. For health reasons, she could have dropped 2 sizes but this is ridiculous weight loss for someone who was allegedly happy with their weight before. I have less respect for her now.

It really depends on your height and frame. I'm 5'2" and I am overweight (BMI of 27) at a size 6-8. I'm curvy, so people don't seem to notice very much, but I have rolls and my thighs rub together. I'm working now to get back to a size 4, but I'd preferably be a size 2.

    Terry..

" However, there is NOTHING ATTRACTIVE about a size 16"

Get off your high horse, nothing attractive? I find my girlfriend VERY attractive thank you very much. Just because you're narrow minded and socialized to think that doesn't mean its true.

And for anyone who said 40 lbs overweight is morbidly obese like its some sort of death sentence... That's just dumb. I can say without shame that I am 300 lbs and 6ft. I do not have a huge overhanging gut, and I feel great. My family has no history of heart problems, I have good cholesterol and blood pressure. I'd like to lose a few times, but I don't think of my weight as some great death sentence. Nor do I find myself unattractive, the fact that I have dated "skinny girls" and "fat girls" all just means that people have tastes when it comes to their partners.

And for the people calling her husband names.. She has changed a lot physically. Sorry, love is blind, but attraction tags right along side love. If you don't find your partner attractive it more than likely won't work out. Not saying he doesnt find her attractive, but if she doesn't look like the woman he married, he has the right to at least be a little upset. He will of course have to deal with it, but the difference between this, and say your wife or husband gaining 100 lbs is that they are going from skinny to fat, and to society and people being socialized to think that it's hideous, it makes them less attractive..

    And Patrick, well said.

I think she should get her stomach stapled to prevent a regression back to a size 16. Frankly, anything more than a size 6 on someone at average female height begins to look rolly and ghastly. Most women speak of "curvy" and men "liking meat on their thighs" because they are too lazy and lack the determination to eat right and exercise. It is a cop out. Men, aside from those with fetishes, like healthy and lean women – not blobs of crap.

I am a healthy person & have no health problems besides the fact that a Doctor puts me in the over weight factor, big deal, I don't have diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or any other problem that affects me. Jennifer is a strong woman & deserves every bit of happiness she wants to go after & if it's being skinny well good for her as long as she's doing it healthy & it makes her happy with herself because that's all that matters not what anyone in this world thinks matters, everyone has an opinion. I live in a state where most women are probably a size 7 up & freaking beautiful..NOT size 0 or 3 or 5 but the average woman in this state has got some curves...

Tell you what...Jennifer did a great thing, lost a lot of weight and toned up. Now, what does her day consist of? Does she go to work like the average Jane or Joe for 8 – 12 hours and come home exhausted and have yet to do chores at home or even more office work at home? Do we see her with a basket of clothes under one arm and the kid under the other, throwing laundry in at 8:00 p.m. while doing dishes from the dinner she had to slap together for the famlily? Face it, her good work was assisted by trainers, personal chefs, restaurnts who would cater to a star's wishes and Weight Watchers paying her to do so. In short – IT AIN'T THAT EASY TO DO WHAT SHE DID WHEN YOU CANNOT DEVOTE ALL OF YOUR ATTENTION AND TIME TO IT. Yes, money does buy happiness and, apparently, a healthy body weight. She looks great; hope her chef keeps her diet up and her trainer keeps her toned up because that's all that counts – how you look. And, Terri, there is nothing attractive about a size 16? Tell that to millions of Marilyn Monroe fans, because she hit that mark. Give me a break, here!

Do your homework. Marylin Monroe was never more than 145 lbs (at her largest) was 5'6" (I believe) and if she were alive today instead of in the 40's, 50's and 60's she would never have been bigger than a size 6. A size 16 in the 60's is a size 6 today (it's called vanity sizing). Marylin's normal weight (the one you see in all the photo's and movies) was around 115-120 and would be a size 2-4 today. Just food for thought.

Jennifer looks great before and after IMHO! 🙂

The man married the woman when she was big so he got what he wanted. Now Jennifer gone and changed on him, she looks like a totally different woman. If he wanted a different woman he could have gone out and gotten one. Keep it around 8 -10 Jennifer, that way both of you get what you want.

Size is relative right... it's about someones frame right... stop the act. Since womens sizes are just numbers and most people don't know the measurements that correlate with each size think about it this way. the difference between a size 12 and a 16 is about the same as a man buying a pair a jeans with a 34 inch waist and a man who buying a pair with a 40 inch waist. The man buying the 34 he may or may not be in the best shape depending on his frame, The man buying the 40 inch waist isn't in good shape. no matter what height or frame. The next time your shopping go ahead sneak a peak a the mens pants and find a 40 waist and you'll see for yourself, it looks like oversized baby clothes. So ladies just get to a size 12 or even 14. on one is going to hate on the 36 inch waist guy who's a little overweight. Just don't walk around in a size 16 micromini and expect the world not to think it's gross and unhealthy. good job Jennifer! a size 6 is a great healthy size to be.

I guess everybody has a different viewpoint of what 'skinny' and 'fat' are...which is why there is a 'range' of what is considered to be normal. However, there is NOTHING ATTRACTIVE about a size 16, just like there is nothing attractive about a man with a 40" waist! We can do the politically correct thing all day long and call it 'curvy' and 'plus size' and 'women's sizes' and mens 'big and tall', but yet we call women who are smaller than the 'average' size of 14 ( 14! ...if that is average, we are in BIG trouble!) "skinny"...sounds like reverse discrimination to me! Before you beat me up over that, let me just say that being overweight has NOTHING to do with intelligence or value as a human being, any more than being blonde would mean you are 'dumb'... those are stereotypes. I would not walk up to someone and say 'hey, did you know you are overweight'?...not my place to do that...but if Jennifer Hudson feels better at a size 6 than a size 16, whats with all the naysayers? I'll bet they are also size 16's who feel 'betrayed', as if she 'sold out' when in reality, she did what they have yet to do...

I'd hit that 😉 . Perhaps she was "happy" with her size before, but now as she has grown up and has a kid and fiance, she has educated herself to the health factors of being overweight. Perhaps she wants to be able to go to the park and play with her kid(s) and wants to live to 70 instead of 50 because of her kids. Maybe she meant when she was "happy" that she wasn't going to change just "for Hollywood"...I lost 50 some odd pounds a few years ago, going from 205 to 150 and found that it is hard work to keep it off, I put back on 15 lbs and am comfortable and find maintaining this weight less work, perhaps she was afraid of the effort before, but now with her lot in life, she is willing to make the effort. Either way, she looks freaking amazing.

You can't judge the size of a person on just size. 16 may seem huge to some, but it depends on your body type and frame. I am only 5'2 and at my smallest, I wore a size 3/4 and weighed 121 pounds. I actually wore a smaller size, but weighed more than I had 4 years before (I was 117lbs, size 7/8). Had I lost anymore weight at that point, I would have been unhealthy and emaciated. As it was, friends and family told me I was too thin. Over the years my weight fluctuates, but I realize that if I eat right and excerise I'll be healthier and thinner. When I slack off, I pay for it. So it's really a personal lifestyle choice.
So please, people...don't judge someone on their size or weight. People have different bone structure and body type. And if you have natrual DD boobs...I'm sure they weigh much more than A cups. Lots of factors, folks.
And lastly, pictures are not very revealing. Unless you've laid your own eyes on the person you don't know what they really look like. Cameras can be very unflattering and pictures can be photoshopped.

Just because the Average size in America is 12-16 does not make it healthy. If your doctor says you are 40lbs + overweight you are; fat, obese, morbidly obese. No one said you had to be a size 0 or 6 to be considered not fat. Just do not be overweight. Overweight people are a drain on health insurance because they are the first to develop serious health conditions that could have been prevented with an hour a day workout and putting down the big mac they eat 3-5 days a week!

It doesn't dissipate when you cook your food. You’re eating all of these enhancing agents.

That's assuming everyone is the same body time. Some people would have to OVER eat to achieve a size 6. When I'm healthy (not eating too little but eating fruits, vegetables, chicken, fish, etc.) my jeans are a size two, and that's without working out. Yet one of my best friends eats very healthy and works out more than I do and she still can't get down to a size six.

I can't believe that it is considered somehow socially incorrect to say that someone who is a Size 16 should lose weight. I'm not encouraging everyone to aspire to be a Size 0 or 2 – a Size 6 is a wonderful weight, and it will hopefully lead to Jennifer Hudson having less of a chance of obesity-induced medical problems in the future.

IMHO it is time for this country to encourage people to maintain healthier weights and lifestyles when possible! Jennifer Hudson was capable of losing her excess weight, and she did – that is hard work, and it is commendable. Whether she looked "better" as a Size 16 isn't really important – she looks HEALTHIER as a Size 6, and I hope that people who are physically capable of losing weight (I understand that some people are actually unable to, which is different) are inspired to follow her example.

I completely agree with you! Now if we can just remove the fear of hurting everyone's feelings and get back to reality kids now days wouldn't have this "everyone owes me everything and I'm perfect" mentality. Truth hurts sometimes- that's what gives you drive to be a better person.

And @ Carefree Spirit- you only think she sounds pathetic because you are a fat person (or enabling some fat person) who is too lazy to do anything about your (or their) weight other than justify it. I'm telling you this in hopes you'll use it to become a better person. I'm sure you won't though.

Now lets see how many tool boxes will just read this, find some grammar or spelling error and say I'm stupid or some other lame comment.

PS. Jennifer looks fine now, stop trying to make her fat so you all can feel better about yourselves. Selfish people!

the other slammed the name I used "Spartacus" for being GAY lol....this IS AMERICA

if you want to line up to praise Jennifer Hudson for doing something that boils down to a personal and private choice which is noone elses business, fine, go ahead, it's your right

countless black women with butts the size of a Buick are joining the latest fads and crazes to lose the weight they themselves put on from over eating or eating improperly and thousand upon thousands of visits to their favorite restaurant...wich lets face it, in most cases...is..."McDonalds".

She has zero talent, anyone with any self respect doesn't give a crap what weight Jennifer Hudson is...and I think it appalling that she wants to celebrate how fat she used to be and will be again real soon, just like her hero and every one else who thinks like her...OPRAH...who comes from no good place to be discussing weight with anyone on this earth given her own track record with it.

as for my Intelligence, I am intelligent enough to know that EVERBODYS WEIGHT IS THIER OWN BUSINESS AND NOONE ELSES, and that what Hudson is doing is nopt onl;y CHILDISH AND IMMATURE, but it is because she has zero frikking talent and needs to do this to draw attention to herself if she wants to work.

Everyone is getting caught up in the numbers! Clothing sizes differ and so does weight. I saw a comment from someone who is a size six and would feel fat and miserable at 150. Welll, I am a size 6 and am 145, pretty close to 150. I am perfectly happy with my size and weight (two completed marathons in the last 8 months – I feel good). You can't judge someone's skinniness by their weight at dress size. Height, muscle tone and body type make up a lot. Just be healthy, fit, and exercise and forget about comparing the number on the scale or the tag to the woman next to you because I guarantee it doesn't mean a thing!

Wait? Is a size 6 not skinny? I am a size 8/10 (up from the 6/8 I was a year ago) and I looked plenty skinny enough when I was trying on clothes yesterday. As long as she feels good about herself and treats her body well, then it doesn't matter what size she is!

well I think she looks outstanding!! I just recently went from a size 18 to a size 9, lost 5 band sizes and one cup size on my bra and I wore a bikini at the beach for the first time in 15 years. I have never felt so good or so bad about myself in years. some days I think I was more comfortable being overweight. That being said I hate looking at lumpy fat on myself or anyone else for that matter. i am always amazed at the number of overweight kids i see every day (i work at a restaurant) and their parents will order them all manner of fried foods and sugary sodas, sometimes two kids meals for one kid, two? I cannot even finish one and I am a grown adult. I waited on two people with a toddler a couple weeks ago, they each had to be 300 plus pounds and they actually ordered a basket of onion rings "for the baby" onion rings? what kid under the age of two eats onion rings? the baby only ate the fried breading, and drank a slushie, made with sugar syrup and soda. This kid is gonna be overweight, diabetic and have hellacious acid reflux before she gets to kindergarten. I think people ought to be more conscious about the way their bodies look, and part of that means being more conscious of what they put into their bodies as well, the american mentality that bacon is a condiment and fried foods are healthy as long as what's under the breading is a vegetable, is killing us, all of us. they actually have chewable lipitor for children with high cholesterol, why would a child have high cholesterol? because their parents are teaching them ridiculous bad habits. Obesity isn't nature except in the rarest of cases, it is nurture all the way.

In reality, though, Hudson is happy where she is now, and doesn't have plans to shed any more weight. "I don't want to lose any more weight, and you're never going to see me skinny," Hudson told the magazine. "I think this is a good, natural size for me."

Huh? I thought a size 6 WAS skinny? Guess not in Hollywood. Last time I wore a size 6, it had a "T" after it. To get BACK to a size 6, I'd have to live on kitchen fumes and cocaine. Sheesh.

(BMI = kg/m2). thats the formula to tell if you are obese, usually if you weigh more than 30% of your ideal weight then by the journal of american medicine, you know the law of the american medical field then your considered obese. the law the fact, now use the formula to get the real correct answer yourself. Yes but the BMI test does not take into accound the amount of muscle mass a person has, therefore it will say that an athelete is obese and an elderly person is normal weight eventhough they have little muscle mass. Really the best test to determine how healthy someone is, is to have a Hydrolisis test where you lie in a pool of water on a scale and blow out your oxygen. Fat raises to the top and muscle because of it's density sinks. when I did this test I was 218 lbs and 5'11" I measured at 18.9% body fat, the BMI scale said that I was 30.3%.

BMI calculators are available on the net. She had a BMI of 28.1 (overweight but no obese) if she was 190 lbs and 5'9". BMI 20-25 is good. 25-30 is overweight. 30-40 is obese and 40 or greater is morbid obesity. You need height and weight to calculate it. With advancing age, the body fats naturally increases. Additionally, overweight people tend to become obese, so its always best to make effort to reduce it. -ObGyn, MD

Being overweight has the lowest instance of death according the same study by the CDC, Jennifer Hudson may not have been in danger even if she stayed at the same weight. As a doctor, you should understand the faults of the BMI test. If Clinton Portis or Michael Jordon came into your office the BMI test would say that they were obese eventhough they are professional atheletes. At the same time if an elderly person came into the same office the BMI test would consider themselves normal.
Plus what is offen forgot when these statements are made is the activity level of some people in morbid group are typically low as well as many of them having other poor health habits. How many of them smoke? Drink, Do drugs, suffer from Mental issues or get less than 6 hours of sleep a night. These factors contribute to poor health as much as their weight number would.

These celebrities live in a different world, anything more than a size 2 is obese. And if you think it's a good message to send to these young girls who are starving themselves literally to death, then you are just as reckless as the industry.

As much as we would all like to think that the picture they're painting is the be all and end all it's not. It's a unhealthy way of life. In order for many of us to be a size 0 or 2, we would have to quit our jobs and move into the gym. Do you all realize that, that's what many of these people do, they don't live normal lives, they have personal trainers, nutritionists, chefs, and the weight (no nun intended) of celebrity on them.

So for all of the people who are hell bent on being ignorant, judgmental, and down right nasty, you need to figure out why your so unhappy about the skinny size 2 that you are. Or better yet, thank your heritage for your genes and the fact that you could possible be naturally thin.

I have many friends who can eat as much as they want, as often as they like, never exercise and are still a size 4 (considered overweight in today’s standard, which is just downright crazy), and if I even watch them eat that crap I gain 5 pounds. So for the people who are spewing your hate and rhetoric, people’s metabolisms and genetic makeup have a lot to do with the weight they carry. Don't get me wrong, if you are out here doing whatever you want and not watching and exercising it's on you. But to make a generalized statement that "fat people" are lazy, don't exercise, and whatever some of the other small minded comments I've read.

And my last comment, watch Food Inc. and you tell me why everyone is gaining weight and are having a hard time getting off. Because that chicken breast you just broiled versus fried was shot up with growth hormones, and where do you think it goes when you eat it.

Your body generally regulates your size if you maintain a steady, routine diet, so if she was doing that at 5'9"/190, that's her normal size...her kids will still be fat.

I have the mag and looking at her pictures in the magazine compared to the front cover, well it's a difference. The front cover surely has touches. The pictures in the magazine looks more genuine, a little bit heavier than the cover but we all know how healthy hands have a tendency to airbrush front covers, why is this, I'll never understand; she still has lost weight so why airbrush. It's a wonder why women struggle with weight. Also why do women compared themselves to certain people in magazines because such people lose weight do to affording high level items like personal trainer,
people to cook or deliver their meals, special attention, I mean most people just don't live like this, so why brag on someone loosing weight as if she walked two miles and went from 16-6, Tired hearing such stories.

I think she looks sick. I don't know why so many women who are big-boned think that they look good when they look sick. She should be at least a size 10 for her structure. And yeah her husband should be shoving food down her throat. It's great that she can be healthy thin and be able to keep up with her little baby son, but it is way better to have some meat on your bones. Take it from me the Skinny Biatch. Marie, are you KIIIIIIIIIIIIIIDDING me?! 5' 9" and 190 pounds isn't classified as obese? a healthy weight for a woman of that height is 130-160lbs. She was 30lbs over the HIGH end of that estimate. Not classifying 30 pounds over a healthy weight as obese proves the downward spiral that our standards in normalcy have taken.

Congrats to Jennifer Hudson (whoever she is) for losing the weight. With the right amount of work and willpower, anyone can lose this amount of weight. Too many Americans, however, choose not to.

@Chimpy: check the BMI charts. That height and weight is considered "overweight." Not obese, not morbidly obese. That's not me, that's the medical establishment talking. Or do you have a medical degree? I highly doubt it.

At 5'9", 190 lbs that would put her at the high end of overweight. Just Google the charts to confirm. However, I find any system that does not differentiate between male and female, well, lacking. I think we can all agree that a man at 5'9" 190 lbs is much different than a woman at the same weight. The man could be in perfect fitness, carring much muscle, while the woman would be considered obese, at least in the eyes of most people outside of the U.S.

I think the better measure is to calculate the percentage of body fat. That excludes the frame size and amount of muscle. However, with Americans being so out of shape, any measure that makes people think is better than what is happening.

They also say obesity is costing 150 billion dollars a year. Any ideas how to motivate people to stay thin? Good luck.

I was skinny, at both weights! My hipbones stuck out! So, the whole sizing thing is just bunk, and does totally depend on the maker etc. It's about health and weight, not size. Everyone, just mind your own business!

Crikey. I'm the same height as Jennifer, and I naturally waver between a size 8 and size 10. I have on occasion gone up to a size 12, at which point I start to feel unhealthy and look at changing my regime. When a size 8-10 I am slap bang in the middle of the right BMI range for my height, too. I like my food and find salad-freaks and gym-bunnies tiresome and boring, but I also cycle and walk a lot more than most people so I don't want for exercise.

But I could never, ever get down to a size 6, even if I wanted to. I'd have to starve myself! At one point I was at the low end of a size 8 due to a lot of stress, and a close friend told me I was "disappearing" and she was worried that I wasn't eating right. As a size 6 I would be skin and bones, that is not healthy in any respect.

So I'm sick and tired of people in the media making stupid comments like "size 6 isn't skinny". While it's true than size 16 is overweight, no matter how you try to spin it as "curvy" or whatever, it's also true that the TV/Movie star concept of what's healthy and what's skinny is totally out of sync with the real world.

I'm sick of photoshopped and airbrushed images altering female bodies to freakish degrees and saying "hey, look at this ideal shape". Shaving inches off Kate Winslet's thighs on the front cover of a magazine; photoshopping out even the slightest hint of anything other than a 100% flat-as-a-pancake stomach on women on movie posters; elongating footage in music videos to make singers appear taller and, therefore, slimmer; it all goes on. Heck, it goes the other way too, in the poster for King Arthur the photoshoppers drastically increased Keira Knightley's chest-size! Hair extensions, teeth bleached so much they become an unnatural white/blue colour, botox... personal achievement has been replaced by vanity.

Do something useful with your life, but don't pretend that the way you look is a valuable contribution to society or enriching for your soul.

I totally agree with you. My friend was watching America's Next Top Model and told me that they had two girls on there who were size 10s that were considered 'plus size models.' And guess who lost? Depending on the dress I'm either ann 8 or a 10 but I know that I am in no way fat. My bone structure makes different dresses fit on me differently. Like for this past years prom I had to get a large in the dress I wanted because the medium was too small to get around my rib cage. I'm sick of people saying you're fat if you're above a 2 or whatever. I don't have much excess wait to lose and even if I tried, my hip bones and rib cage sure as heck aren't shrinking.

You know the BMI charts are worthless pieces of crap, right? It can't take your actual body fat/muscle ratio into account unless you have a test done by a doctor. For years the charts said my dad was "obese" at 6', over 230 lbs but he's mostly muscle. Due to a rotator cuff injury, which made it harder for him to weight lift, and a lot of running, he's down to around 180 now and he's still nearly 'overweight' but has like a 6 pack. Sure, some people are obese and all, but I don't think you should totally base your opinions off of BMI charts. I myself, at 5' 10" and 158 lbs, have been close to being considered 'overweight' on certain BMI charts but the only way I was ever 145 was when I completely stopped running and lost my leg muscles. When it comes down to it, charts don't matter. Someone who is 5' 6" and 175 lbs is not necessarily a fatty, as you claim. Just sayin'.

She looks a lot better now and I bet any heath issues she once had have now cleared up. Genetics also play a factor with health issues but it has been statistically proven that if you are overwieght, the risks for certain health issues skyrocket! For all the fatties out there; gain a little self-respect and start caring about your healthy now before it's too late! Curvy is just another cover up for the word "fat"; don't buy the lie! I believe there is fat, curvy and stick-straight. After discussions with my guy friends, girls want to be curvy, meaning thin with enough meat on their bones to get that hourglass shape. If girls start to lose all of their weight, they lose the curves and from what I understand, a lot of guys aren't attracted to that. It's like this FML I read where the girl spent a year dieting to fit into freaking size 0 jeans. All of her girlfriends told her she looked great and the guys were disgusted. So curvy, not fat is where we should be at.

And reading over what I originally posted, I'll admit it was very poorly worded, but my point was girls really shouldn't aim to be size 0 because it's just not realistic. Confidence is key to everything in life and for lots of people that includes a nice, solid body image. They should aim for a good natural weight which usually means curves for girls. Just like Jenn here is a size 6 now and says she's fine right there. She looks great, so why should she aim to be smaller? When it comes down to it it's about loving yourself and being happy with how you are. If people want to lose weight they should do it for themselves, not for anyone else. For instance, my best friend's mom tells her she's fat because she's a little bit bigger than the rest of her friends. I think she looks fine but she's on a diet cause her mom won't leave her alone about it. That's just wrong. Jennifer did it for herself and she's proud and that's what matters. Any person that wants to diet needs to do it for themselves and get down to a natural body weight. But I suppose if they aim for a 0 and make it, kudos to them as long as they're happy.

To all of you skinny people criticizing those of us who are overweight...how many of you smoke, drink excessively, or avoid exercise? People do a lot of unhealthy things, yet it's the overweight people who are constantly ridiculed for being unhealthy. I'm overweight and always have been (I'm currently 5'10, size 18). I have tried and tried to lose weight, but my body wants to stay this size. I've decided to just be happy and let it go. I am healthy in every other way. I don't smoke or do drugs, and I only drink in moderation. I also exercise regularly (3 times a week, sometimes more). I have low blood pressure (110/70), low cholesteral, and no signs of diabetes. Just because someone is overweight doesn't mean that they are unhealthy. Some people are just meant to be bigger.

I think she looks great but....in a year we'll see where she is really at. It looks like she lost the weight very fast and probably didn't eat the right foods while doing it. By going what she said, she was 190 lbs. and 5'9" tall she should weigh about 140 lbs. now. Losing 50 lbs. quickly isn't good for someone that wasn't really huge. She was not at a healthy weight but should have taken almost a year to lose the 50 lbs. I myslef am trying to lose 20-25 lbs. and plan on doing it with more exercise and less calories. The later of the two being the hardest to do. Being a 5'9" man at 190 lbs. is ok if I was a defensive back for the Bears. But, for a 42 year old, smaller structure, average working man it isn't so great. I hope Jennifer continues to eat right and work out and change her lifestyle to a more healthy one from the one that made her heavier. Although she looked pretty good before it just wasn't very healthy. Some people carry more weight than others naturally. Last but not least.....the racial remarks aren't needed anymore in todays society. From everyone, white, black, or whomever. For those of you who think that white people are the only racists, think again. Your comments aren't that great either. Its been a 2 way street for a long time.

She is not skinny. She is at a nice healthy weight. It is amazing how warped most sense of what a healthy weight range is these days. So many are overweight, and seriously so, that they see someone at a healthy weight and deem it unhealthy and too skiiny. BTW- At 5'9" and 140 lbs, her BMI is 20.7. Anything below 18.5 is unhealthy, which means she would have to weigh something less than 125 lbs. She is likely wearing a body shaper underneath. Most women wear these days with tight fitting dress even those that are truely skinny. Body shapers give you a nice smooth silouette.

Maybe her comment had more to do with how previously fat girls never really think of themselves as skinny, no matter how much weight they lose. As someone who also lost 50 lbs and went from a size 16 to a 6-8, I can identify with that. It's like when we were fat, we didn't see ourselves as large as we were (hence hating all photographs of ourselves), and when we get thin it's hard to see that accurately, too. I think perhaps time takes care of some of that, though. I've maintained for over a year now and finally am developing a healthy, more accurate body image. And for all of us, keeping the weight off - not losing it - is the biggest challenge. Good for her. She looks great and I wish her continued success! Yes, it is very important to be healthy, and I'm healthy, happy & curvy in a size 14, 145 lbs. What is considered fat on that stupid chart is absolutely incorrect and does not apply to everyone. It is another trick the insurance companies came up with to affect rates. In some countries, it is not considered healthy to be a size 6, while in this stupid country, it's praised. Accept who you are, and if you have health reasons due to weight, address them! but trying to fit into some stupid chart is not ok!

The CDC (Centers for Disease Control) and the WHO (World Health Organization) don’t set their standards for health based off any insurance companies recommendations or guidelines. Obesity in the US is a major problem and has gotten worse over the years. You are correct, 145lbs is not considered fat for someone over 5’4” with a large build or someone 5’7” with a medium frame. Skinny is not healthy either.
The point I was trying to make was too many people feel it is okay to promote being fat, or to “Feel good in your own skin”, well if that skin is hanging off someone’s body or is ready to burst, and they are 56lbs over weight, they should do something about it.

She does look great. At 196 lbs she was considered "Obese" according to the "CDC" and "WHO". She lost 56lbs and hopefully did it the right way (diet and exersise). At 140 lbs she is in normal healthy range. Nobody looks good 56lbs over weight, nor do they feel good. People tend to try and justify being over weight, but they should spend that energy losing it. We are one of the most unhealthy countries in the world, and have crafted words to help make over weight pepole feel good. The only way you will feel truly good about your weight, is to lose it!

My wife is 5'6" medium bone structure, and if she lost enough weight to fit into a size 6 she would be far skinnier than what JH looks in that photo (where she is obviously wearing something to make her waist look that small). I think our perception of thin has changed as the majority of people have become overweight. A size 6 today was a 1990's size 10. The fashion industry has changed the proportions of size numbers since the 1920's. I'm 30lbs. heavier than I was 10 years ago. I was a 2 then and I'm a 6 now. I don't consider myself thin. To the people here discussing how to lose weight, investigative science journalist Gary Taubes points out that it's carbohydrates - flour, sugar, starchy vegetables like potatoes (and apple juice – you may as well drink a Coke) - that cause the insulin secretion that puts on fat. I'm effortlessly rail thin from eating a very low-carb diet. I eat dessert once every two weeks, but otherwise, it's all steak, bacon, and green vegetables drenched in butter all the time. -Amy Alkon, advicegoddess.com

Amy, other factors do play a part. Age, bone structure, metabolism, activity level, genetics. There are a lot of people who could eat anything they wanted when they were 25 or even 30, but the majority of people are overweight because they simply eat too much based on their activity level. And, for all the people out there who think that being overweight isn't a health issue, and there are many, just check out the who's riding hoverounds, and those motorized carts in the grocery store, 9 out of 10 are obese.

Actually it is a matter of eat less and exercise more. The problem is that it's not that easy to do. It means a significant lifestyle change that is hard if not impossible for most people to do because it takes will power that most people lack.

      August 4, 2010 at 9:04 am | Report abuse |

      @ gburg,

EXACTLY! It's NOT easy to lose the excess weight and reduce your bodyfat numbers. It takes a lifestyle commitment of a healthier diet and exercise. Once you reach your ideal bodyfat numbers, keeping it off is a bit easier in that you no longer have to exercise intensely to burn fat, but instead exercise enough to keep healthy and maintain your current bodyfat numbers. Also, you can eat more compared to when you were trying to lose weight.
It's hard work, but even harder is making it a habit in your life. The minute you think a diet is "only for six weeks" or some other time period, you are destined to fail. Don't even bother because you will gain it back, and will mess up your metabolism each time you "yo-yo".

Tell it to the folks in line at McDonald's. Seriously, have you seen what people in this country eat? Friendly's now has a cheeseburger out that is served between TWO GRILLED CHEESE SANDWICHES. 1500 calories, 90g of saturated fat. That is how Americans choose to fuel their bodies.

While there are certainly nuances, the basic fact is calories in must be fewer than calories out to lose weight. Period. Eat less, move more, create a caloric deficit, lose weight. People grossly underestimate the caloric content of their food and grossly overestimate the energy expenditure of their activities. The example I like to use is running a mile. Do you know the caloric expenditure equivalent (in approximation for most people) of running a mile? A banana. Not a Snickers, not a Big Mac, not an extra scoop of Rocky Road. One medium-sized banana.

Know your energy requirements, and knock 500 calories off your intake each day. You will lose a pound a week. It really is that simple.

      August 4, 2010 at 12:02 pm | Report abuse |
    • Marie

There's actually no evidence that exercising really helps in weight loss. Recent studies published show that exercise is an insignificant part of weight loss – you don't really burn that many calories unless you're doing intense 2 hr+ daily exercising. It's about 95% diet. If you exercise more and don't change your diet, you'll lose very little, if any weight. If you don't exercise but cut your food intake drastically, you will shed weight quickly.

The problem is, the human body is not designed to lose weight easily. It is designed to hold onto every pound possible. Every single system in your body works against you as strongly as it can to keep you as big as possible. That's how humans survived for hundreds of thousands of years of evolution.

So to say "well just eat less" is incredibly simplistic and ignores the reality of biology and real life for most people, especially in this country where we are surrounded by a multi-billion dollar food industry which has a vested interest in manipulating hard-wired human tendencies in getting people hooked on unhealthy food.

Marie – I do get over 2 hours of exercise most days, with 1 complete day of rest weekly and more downtime one week out of every month. It is called an active lifestyle. It can be done, most people are simply too lazy or make excuses. I was one of those people for a long time, but I got with it and made the change. Restricting food intake will only get you so far, to eat enough get the nutrients you need to be healthy and still lose or maintain weight, exercise is required. Exercise also makes me feel GREAT!!! I'm off the depression meds. YEAH... Ignore the studies – you can find a study to support any conclusion you like.

I too did go from a size 16 – lost 50 lbs and still only became a size 10-12 at 140 lbs. Still can't figure that one out why I too can't be size 6 – which in Jennifer's book is not skinny? Wow!! What a comment and we wonder why our kids have eating disorders. Size 6 is skinny Jennifer.

I've been on WW for 6 years (as a lifetime member – maintaining). They wouldn't have a spokesperson who cheated by having surgery. 6 years ago I lost 40lbs in 4 months and went from a size 18 to a size 6/8. It is very possible; I did it.

I don't think she made the "you're never going to see me skinny" comment intending to say she still feels fat and she's never going to succeed at becoming skinny. What I think she was saying is she's very happy where she's at, doesn't want to lose any more weight, still feels curvy and has no desire to be skinny. everybody defines skinny differently. Some people think a size 6 is skinny, others think a size 2 is skinny.

More than a quarter of Americans are now obese according to the CDC, so yeah, it's now "curvy." If enough of us do anything, no matter how unhealthy, it becomes the norm. That's why you see so many posters here saying that size 6 (which in reality was a size 10 a few years ago) is "too skinny."

LOL you are such a moron it's hilarious. Can you imagine a woman who is 5 10 under 130 pounds? she would be so thin she wouldnt even be able to stand up. That being said, I'm a size 12, I can swim 7 miles in open water across a bay, I can run 3 miles without stopping, I go to yoga 3-4 times a week and I know people who are sizes both larger and smaller who couldnt even think of doing any of those things. What it comes down to is how conditioned are you? What kind of things can you do physically? What is your cholesterol? My mom is skinny but she doesnt eat anywhere near the amount of vitamins and nutrients she should be getting each day. I know I could lose weight, but in the end, I can do MANY things athletically wise that many other people of all sizes cant even comprehend. So, to say anyone should BE any size is ridiculous. Your body is the only one that can REALLY tell you whats up.

ex: Gabrielle Reece is a superb athlete and is 6'3 170 pounds. She is in better shape then all of us here, including you PL White, who clearly has NO idea about athletics or athletes in general. You are a pretty sad excuse for a human being. I hope you arent having kids and passing your stupid genes on.

That being said, I would say that almost universally, a size 16 probably isnt healthy, but i would say you can be very fit at a size 14 and down. (if you are 5'1, a size 14 is obese-everything is relative here)

I'm not saying I'd like the old Jennifer back, but perhaps she could go up to a size 8 or 10, she'd still be "Skinny" as you all call it, but she wouldn't look like a wanna be whitegirl. Healthy is definitely the more important goal for all of us. One thing to point out is that her size 6 is more than likely being measured using the adjusted sizing charts that came out a while ago. Therefore, size 6 is more realistically a size 8-10 here in the US. (google this if you don't believe me!) I've been in the fashion and swimwear industry for about 25 years and have seen this first-hand.

As for body weight vs size, vs height vs frame...no one is alike. Everyone's proportions are unique and what is healthy, slim, overweight, and etc to you may not hold true for me. Thank goodness for individuality! Unfortunately, society has created a monstrous ideal of what every woman should physically look like. Look at what it's doing to our young girls!

Let me let you in on a little secret: "Size 6" could be anywhere from an actual size 4 to a size 8 or 10 depending on the brand. There was an article recently about this discrepancy – the majority of American women who think they're a size 10 are actually wearing closer to a size 12 or 14 using measurements from years ago. And you'll see that depending on the brand, an 8 feels like a 10 and a 12 feels like a 10 or a 10 feels like an 8.

I've heard girls say they're a size 4 and it's like, no you're not! But their clothes may say 4. At her largest, Jennifer Hudson looked way bigger than a 16 too.

So she's saying she's a size 6 but I'm willing to bet she's actually more like an 8.

You're absolutely correct that clothes are more vanity sized now, even every day brands. I currently wear between a 6-8. However, I stumbled across a pair of size 8 jeans from my college years (from about 20 years ago), and let's just say there's no way I would fit into them now. Another way to look at things – sewing patterns have, for the most part, not been resized, and still go on measurements, not a size number. According to the pattern companies I'm a 12-14.

It's all in frame size, and muscle mass. I'm 5' 6" and at 120 lbs my hair was falling out/stopped having a period from lack of body fat, and was tired all the time and wore a size 4-6 *good riddance!*. I look/feel FANTASTIC at around 145 *size 8*, which is the high-end of the BMI charts for my height. So "F" the scale and go by energy-level, and keeping your waist under 32" around if you're a woman.

Do Americans no longer understand the distinctions between 'skinny', 'slim', 'normal' and 'fat'? To say that you're not skinny at a size 6 is not saying that you're fat. It's saying that you're slim, but you're not showing bones yet. And when you start talking about how large sizes are 'normal' have a think about all the other billions of people in the world who somehow manage to be, on average, much much smaller than Americans and who regard being fat as ugly and unhealthy, because it is. This whole fat acceptance movement may be making fat people feel emotionally better, but it won't get them off their butts and doing something about it. Being fat isn't normal. Being fat is what happens when you keep taking in more calories than you burn.

ok, to everyone who doesn't understand how she can say that she is a size 6, but you will never see her skinny. I am a size 6... and I have areas of chub. I am NOT skinny. I am slender. I can watch what I eat and be trimmer, a size 4, or I could be crazy about it and be skinny, a size 2. A size 6 on an average heighted woman is NOT scrawny skinny. I always assumed it was when I was heavy, until I became it. My body settles now at a size 6. I eat butter, cheese and ice cream. I like fat in my food. Remember people, size is a number and depending on ones bone structure... each body holds the same size differently.

All of you posting nasty comments and judging what you think is obese and unheathy absolutely disgust me. You people are exactly what wrong with this world not fat people. The difference as you can clearly see from this picture of the gorgeous woman who is so beautiful inside and out is that someone with excess weight heathy or not can change but some of you nasty people will always be ugly inside and when people see who you really are that ugliness can be seen from a mile away. Maybe if some of you so called skinny people werent so unhappy with yourselves you might not be so horrible about so many things you dont understand. I was fat all through high shool then lost the weight and join the Marine Corps. I have been on both sides of the fence, and thats one thing that shows you what you are really made of. Loddy I agree with you. The problem with the world is not the obese or skinny people it is with individuals that are biased and that have no compassion for their fellow man. The important point is being healthy and trying to live the best life you can. It does not matter what size you are cancer, AIDS and other diseases see no size when they kill you. Some people have to work so much harder than others to maintain healthy weights. It does not mean that they are any better or worst than someone who is just naturally thin. What happened to having kind words for someone. So are you telling me that all of the size sixes and below on this blog have no friends that are size 16 and larger as friends or even family members. Next if you do .... do you tell them how they really disgust you.... I mean really where is your compassion. You have no idea the struggles they may have or how they feel. I pray for all your judgmental souls.

  312. Eitherway

The thing is Jennifer Hudson looks good either way.
To her a size 6 is average. To Hollywood, it's a size 2 or even 0. But how does that seem realistic when you consider that the average woman in the US is a size 12.
Some women at 5'6" 130lbs while other are 110lbs. Does that mean the second is healthier than the first? Not necessarily.
Weight is not just about fat, it's muscle mass, fat and bone weight.

Ultimately, as long as you are healthy that is what matters no matter if you're 5'6" 110 or 130lbs.
The problem comes from image and self-esteem because women who are thinner than others, may feel more insecure.

if you are a size 10 or 16 and your doctor says you are healthy... then where is the issue? If you are unhappy about your weight, then you can choose to do something. But that's not for everybody

No, they think SKINNY is a size or less. I'm 5'7", size 0, with plenty of meat on my bones. What I DON"T have is a bunch of fat. I focus on eating right and doing fitness activities I love, and my rockin' strong body comes naturally as a result. I'm not going to carry around a bunch of dead weight so I have a little more boob for dudes to ogle at. They are too busy staring at my butt and legs anyway... 2 1/2 years ago I was a size 14, and depressed and miserable and FAT, been there, done that, and don't plan on going back to FAT. I was not curvy when I was fat, and I'm not curvy now. I am a long, lean powerhouse. That is my shape and I love it.

Some of you can live with lower standards for yourselves if you want to, but don't rain on the parade of those who have higher standards and succeed in meeting them. Go Jennifer! Only you can decide the weight is right for you.

What I find is messed up is how so many women seem to base their self-worth on their weight, as if they are only a piece of meat, good or bad. It's not just men or the media who objectify us; we do it to ourselves. My body is about average, but in no way do I feel either superior to those who are fatter or inferior to those who are leaner–to do so is just shallow.

Biologically. Objectively. Whatever way you look at it. Size 16 is fat (with some exceptions to the rule). Work out. Better yourself. You'll live longer, look better, and feel better.

She, like Oprah, has money, money for the personal trainer, the gym, not to mention the chef and the expensive food to keep it going. We don't. We can probably do general exercise depending on our health. But when it comes to buying an abundance of fresh fruits and veggies, the prices are high. We can eat them, but some times due to lack of of monies, we have to forego them and eat what we can pay for.

As for a sizes 6-14, that is skinny and always has been. Whomever says it isn't needs their head examined.

As for the rest of us, we need to learn to be happy in the skin we're in. Better it within our means, but don't go to the extreme where we're nuts and looking down on each other.

"As for a sizes 6-14, that is skinny and always has been. Whomever says it isn't needs their head examined. "
Your sense of "skinny" is skewed. I was a size 14 (and 6-12 as well) and can tell you that I was "fit" but still in the obese weight catagory. It is not all about how much you weigh, but about your bmi. If you weigh 180 and your bmi is above 24, then you are 24% FAT. You are borderline obese. If your bmi is higher, you are OBESES. Even if you are fit. Even if your blood pressure, heart rate, and anything else is normal. You are carrying more than 24% body fat. It is in NO WAY healthy. You cannot spin it to be ok or "curvy". The numers do not lie. Get over your feelings, and get real. Fat CAN be beautiful, but it is in no way healthy. It is not about fashion, or clothing sizes. Those things are irrelevant. The human body should be treated well, and forcing it to carry around extra weight is not good for your heart, your bones and your ligaments. I had back problems, asthma, and other issues. I worked out twice a day and ate what I thought at the time was healthy. It was not. I changed my diet, worked out once a day and lost 40lbs. I am between a 6 and an 8 and am by no means "skinny". Skinny is in the eye of the beholder, but let me tell you... I still have fat, still have muscle and you cannot see any bones. I am not considered skinny. I think people are so used to seeing themselves heavier that when they actually hit a healthy weight, they think that they look sickly.

If you have a BMI of 24 you are most certainly NOT carrying 24% fat. A high BMI does not reflect body composition. It is a formula comparing weight to height. A person can have 5% body fat and a BMI of 30 if they are carrying a lot of muscle.

There are many ways to measure body fat percentage but BMI is NOT one of them.

Jennifer Hudson is a beautiful girl both before and after the weight loss. However, while the weight loss was dramatic and easy to notice, that is not a size 6. She is reported to be 5 feet 8 inches tall and, at that height, if the woman was wearing a size 6 she would look half the size that Jennifer is now.

A lot of you obviously don't know the difference between "curvy" versus "obese." Being curvy is one thing, but being obese and unhealthy is another. What's more important? I'd go for the healthy. If you are the type of person who things having "curves" are everything, well, let's see if you will feel the same way when you or a "curvy" friend of yours ends up having diabetes or a heart attack.

Funny – my friend who's a size 6 has diabetes. She's that exercises all the time and eats well and always has – yet she's the one with it.

The one that's obese? Perfect cholesterol levels, textbook blood pressure. She just happens to be fat.

      That would be me.

I see your point, but that doesn't exclude the thousands of people who are obese and have diabetes and have heart problems. Just because it hasn't happened to you doesn't mean that everyone else who is obese is healthy. You can't deny that obese people DO go through heart problems and are most often contracted with diabetes. I'm basing it on a factual, statistic perspective, good for you that you are healthy, but so many other people aren't, including those that are slim as well.

My aunt died of lung cancer at 50 years old and never smoked, ergo, everyone should smoke? Just because you know someone of healthy weight with diabetes (and what type of diabetes? because type 1 is not related to weight at all) doesn't mean we should all be obese. That's nonsensical. Obesity carries a litany of health risks, most significantly, premature death. This is a fact, no matter who you know how died of heart disease or stroke at a healthy weight.

Jennifer is a talented young woman who has shown tremendous strength and grace in the face of tragedy. Choosing to be healthy now that she is herself a mother is an admirable endeavor. She eats proper portions and exercies, the best way to reach a healthy weight. I couldn't be happier for her.

"Size 6" – which clothing line? The actual garment measurements vary from one manufacturer to another, sometimes by 1.5 inches or more (that's a big difference in a waist or hip measurement). A typical size 6 today was a size 8 or 10 several years back. It's called "vanity sizing." Jennifer Hudson's current weight is likely much healthier for her, and I'm glad she feels better about her looks. All of you who think her previous size was okay clearly have no understanding of obesity and the health risks that accompany it. No wonder obesity is a national epidemic.

Size 6-8 women (in my opinion) are the healthy ideal. I hear all the ladies out there who have weight to lose saying "I'll never be a size 6". Maybe not, but neither will I. I am happy and proud that Jennifer was able to lose her weight, but I do feel that a size 6 is entirely too thin for any woman. My doctor told me that for my frame and size, I need to be down to the weight of 125. I assured him that my husband doesn't want a bone, he prefers meat on his prime rib. I did get down to 150 and everyone thought I was sick. So I hope that this doesn't cause any problems with her relationship and even her success.

You sound very egotistical in your statement, as if everybody has to resort to your standard of what size is healthy to actually be healthy. Women come in many sizes, shapes, and heights, and you know what, there are such thing as healthy people who are size 6, hell, even 0, and are perfectly healthy because it fits THEM. Just because a size 6 isn't for you doesn't mean that it's a bad thing or that it is unhealthy for somebody else, for some women, it is perfectly fine, for some, it is not. And who are you to say that it may ruin somebody's relationship or career? C'mon now.

Pamela, I completely agree with you. At the "ideal" weight for my height, I had sunken cheekbones and looked ill. I wore a size 8 at the time. I gained weight to a size 16, and was told both by doctors and by family that they thought I looked so much better and much healthier. At that point, I weighed 170. And frankly, that's when I felt best, too. So to me, THAT is my perfect weight.

I'm a size 0 and I'm perfectly healthy, so what does that make me, anorexic? How about those who are sizes 1-6? Are you just going to label them as being ill just because in your egotistical world a size 6 is "unhealthy"? Do you honestly think that just from your experience, that every other woman is "unhealthy" at a certain size because you looked sickly? Sorry, but if you are gonna act like you are some expert on what size a woman "should" be, at least express that opinion with facts instead of basing it entirely on your ego. Women come in many shapes, sizes, and heights, which is why we have different clothes sizes to begin with, and every woman is different and as long as she IS healthy, who are you to say that they aren't?

Pamela, I agree with you. While I am overweight myself and I admit it I am on Weight Watchers myself, I don't think I "look" morbidly obese, nor does anyone else but according to whatever these Dr’s say I am obese, to me morbidly obese people are people waddling when they walk, with rolls of fat sticking out of their stretch pants. I think they need to redefine that term morbidly obese, it sounds degrading, overweight yes. But when I do lose weight, I should be 140, but at 140, I do look "sick" and honestly that’s not how I want to look, healthy or not a good state of mind and not being depressed because you are a few pounds overweight is better than fitting in a size 6. And not that I'm trying to justify anything. Americans being the county with the most obese people . . . Other countries . . . don’t have proper drinking water let alone food to eat that is why they are emaciated! And another thing, my grandmother is 93 years old, still living and she was to today’s standards overweight, no major health issues she ate whatever she wanted. I think this cholesterol kick is pharmaceutical companies and dr’s wanting to make some bucks. Do you know that Cholesterol medications cause liver damage, what you want high cholesterol or liver damage? While I agree that there is a huge case of diabetes, but Mother’s need to feed their kids right not trips to MickyD’s, of BK and call it a meal that’s what’s wrong. So lay off the obese comments. Size 6 is skinny!!!

Unfortunately, we have a society of younger women who think that if you are a size 16 you are fat. Katy – I am old enough to remember Hollywood icons such as Marilyn Monroe, who was a size 14-16. I have struggled with weight my entire life and have never been "unhealthy". I have lost 90 pounds in the last year (on Weight Watchers!), and I am very happy with it, but I get very tired of people (especially other women) being so judgmental about how people look. It is assumed that overweight people are all stupid, lazy and over eaters. This is simply just not true. I have a gorgeous daughter that suffers from a medical condition that causes her to be insulin resistance, hence she puts on weigh easily and has a very difficult time getting it back off. She eats healthy foods and exercises regularly, but it's still very difficult for her. When we generalize about how others look and that they must be just lazy and stupid and unhealthy, maybe we should walk a mile in their shoes. And – let's teach our kids good nutrition does not come out of a box of chemically enhanced food that's cheap and easy, or at the drive up window at the fast food restaurant of their choice.

@Lilybean58- Marilyn Monroe was a size 14-16 when sizes were measured differently. You can't honestly look at a picture of Monroe and look at a picture of Jennifer Hudson when she was a size 16 and tell me they are even remotely close to the same size. That picture on the cover could be compared to Marilyn Monroe's body, and that's a size 6 that's probably been photoshopped down a little bit. Congrats on losing weight, and yes some people have great difficulty losing weight, no matter how healthy they are, but I believe Jennifer Hudson wasn't being healthy before this weight loss and that's the most important message people should be taking away from this.

Please do not generalize that a size 6 is too thin. I am a size 4, 5'4" and I do not look sickly... at all. In fact, most people compliment me. If I were heavier than I am now, I would feel gross. I have always been naturally thin, and as I have gotten older, I have to work harder at it by eating healthy and working out. I have curves and am not bony, I am just toned and lean. Our country is FAT, not curvy. I am sure there are healthy overweight people, but most people that are a 16 are probably not too healthy. Someone who wears a size 16 should not be wearing a bikini either, and I love looking good in a bikini 🙂

People need to get over it and take care of themselves. Jennifer gets to decide what works for her and her life. In her business the need to be UNDERWEIGHT is pushed. And size 6 IS thin. Not underweight, but thin. If she is happy at 6, great. Is she is happy at 16, also great. Let people be who they are as long as they are happy and healthy. Just being bigger DOES NOT MEAN YOU ARE AUTOMATICALLY UNHEALTHY!!!! The BMI charts are created for insurance companies and are not even accurate. So look in the mirror, look in your heart, talk to your doctor. And find what works for you!!

Size 6 is not to small for any woman. You have to take into consideration the persons bone structure, height, etc. I am 4 ft. 9 inches "short" and at a size six I am still 15 lbs over my ideal weight. That comes from doctors not hollywood standards.

Maybe you can knock down the person who maybe suggested that, but to me it just seems as if you read only one comment and then use that to generalize everybody's opinions, basically derailing the subject. Nice try, but basically, you obviously just didn't read all of the comments.

Ok, a size 6 would be super-skinny on some people, and normal to large on others, depending on height and frame. At my thinnest I was a size 8 and VERY thin. I weighed about 145-150 lbs at this time (I'm 5'10"). My hip bones stuck out as did my ribs. Some people told me I looked ill, and others said I looked great. Different people find different things attractive, of course. (And no, I wasn't sick. I wasn't even trying to lose weight, I was just very stressed out by school and a cheating boyfriend in addition to being far more active than I am now.)
Right now I weigh about 175 and wear a size 12-14. Would I like to lose weight? Sure. Do I want to be that thin again? Not really. I'm aiming for a size 10 at the smallest, for my height and frame. The people (mostly white guys) who thought I looked really good thin probably think I'm fat now, but I still get hit on left and right by black and hispanic men, who I guess "like some meat on the bones". (I'm white, for the record.)

That is a size 6 of pure muscle- not fat. Big difference. It's what I look like in a 6. You also have to factor in height and body fat distribution. Some people put weight on in different areas and take it off in different places first. I have to be 15 lbs over my normal weight (120 lbs) before my waist gets above a 24 inches.

Skinney is not necessarily healthy! I have size-0 friends who are absolute couch potatoes and eat nothing but fast food. I refuse to believe that they are healthier than myself, a size 10 swimmer who is careful of her dietary habits. True, size 16 is unhealthy but don't assume that people are healthy because they are skinney.

However I am wondering where she is trying to go with all these changes. Jennifer have always been very beautiful even before the weight loss.(FABULOUS) Jen don't take yourself tooooooooo far out of bounce. Change is very good, but there is a limit to all things.

Maybe having a child has changed her perspective on life. When I had children, I saw my body as a reflection of what I would be teaching them as a healthy lifestyle. I too wanted to become healthy, and as a result, lost weight by changing my eating habits. And like Jennifer, I lost a lot of weight in a reasonable amount of time.

I agree. "I'll never be skinny" and she's a size 6? So what, a 6 is fat now? I've been a size 10 for ever and I don't feel fat, I feel average. But according to Jennifer Hudson, who has 7 days a week and 24 hours a day to work out, it is probably fat. If everyone had infinite amounts of free time like celebrities, we could all be a size 6.

A size 6 is healthy, not skinny by Hollywood standards and I believe that is what she is trying to say. That she'll never be a size 0 or 2. People have different definitions of "skinny" and in Hollywood skinny is not a size 6.

Size 10 is average and size 10 is fat. If people could read minds, size 10 ladies would hear folks walking behind them thinking "wide load." We have become a culture of settling instead of pressing for excellence. It shows in school, in job performance, and in appearance. Case in point, check out the "vanity sizing" of women's fashion. Let's applaud this talented artist who decided to work toward a excellent appearance to match her excellent talent. Size 10 ladies, follow her lead.

Most likely, she still mentally sees herself as that size 16 girl she's been for years. When I dropped a significant amount of weight, it was always a shock to my brain how thin I really was. In my own head, I still pictured myself as that bigger girl!

      August 4, 2010 at 11:28 am | Report abuse |
    • Hmmm

I agree...since when is a size 6 not skinny? It really irks me that the says "you'll never see me skinny" as if being a size six is overweight (of course for Hollywood, any thing over a size 0 seems to be considered fat.) When I was growing up the smallest size you could find was a size 4-and only teenage girls seemed to fit into it.
Also, BMI is not an accurate measurement of healthy weight, as it does not take into account bone density or muscle mass. Even after losing 160 pounds I was considered "overweight" by BMI standards, despite being a size 8. I was very muscular, but muscle mass isn't part of BMI, so I was considered "overweight." My body may have been smaller, but I didn't look healthy because of the excess skin on my body (part of the reason I re-gained some weight) and my face looked gaunt. Now I am definitely what people would call overweight. I go to the gym 5 days a week for at least an hour a day and work out (cardio and weights) harder than some of the girls 1/2 my size (who seem to be there to watch the TVs on the machines). I eat reasonable portions and very little processed food. I know I have better cardio fitness than some "skinner" folks and a healthier diet-yet I am still overweight. The last time I lost weight I had to starve and overwork myself to do so-I'd rather be a little heavier and fit than skinnier and unhealthy (the way I was before.)

Actually, today's size 6 is a good size for most frame types at 5'6" but it isn't skinny except for the largest frames. I have clothes in my closet from 10 years ago that are a size 4-6 that fit me, but when I shop for clothes today I'm actually wearing a size 0-2. I have a tiny frame and my weight is darn near perfect, and I am in great shape. How many of you are wearing the same size you were 10 years ago but you're actually FATTER now? Carrying around extra dead weight serves no purpose. If you think a size 0 is unhealthy, I'll race you, or challenge you to chin-ups, I bet I'll win.

How is a size 6, on a 5'9 frame, not skinny? If JH really thinks this, she has lost her connection to reality. At 5'3 and at a 6 (at my height, not "skinny," but by no means overweight). Anyway Jennifer was beautiful before and she's beautiful now–just different–and physically healthier. If she feels better about herself at her new size then good for her. Despite being a Hollywood commodity in the end her body belongs to her, after all. Sad though, I doubt people get all worked up like this over her WORK.

We have enough skinny girls in Hollywood. I thought Ms. Hudson's face was prettier when she was a size 16. I mean, good for her if this is what she wanted, but I've always admired her for being full-figured and well loved. She let us all know you can be big and happy, too, and disregard societal "norms" which are not always "normal" or "healthy" or even attractive. This guy likes his gals curvy and loves it when the curvy women love themselves!

Im sorry its one thing to be "curvy" but a size 16 is NOT curvy, that is well outside the range of healthy! I think 7-11 on a 5'6 frame is about right....anything more or less and you are getting into unhealthy. There is a reason America is the number one obese country out there. People have become SO politically correct that when you see people at size 16 you call them curvy as to not insult them. A 16 IS HUGE for a woman of 5'6, a weight of roughly 180 pounds. That is just NOT healthy!

Sarah is absolutely right. I think people focus so much on what's "curvy" instead of focusing on what is point blank, not healthy. There is a difference. Being full figured, and whatever size you may call that and being healthy is different. I was just in size 16 jeans. I'm 5'6" and I was almost 200 pounds. I had been 135 until I turned 50 by being on the Atkins diet. Then family members started dropping dead, menopause kicked in and my husband had a nervous breakdown. Instead of turning to the bottle I took up with the cheesy poofs. I looked like Jabba the Hutt. Back on Atkins and dropped 25 pounds in 3 months. Feel so much better. Atkins died of a head injury. The people who don't want you to believe that are the ones that have stock in Kraft who came up with all the low-fat products that they now must sell. That's what will kill you. As they take out the fat they up the sodium (salt) and carbs (sugar). Hmm hypertension and diabetes on the rise. I wonder why?

Okay, frame sizes differ, people! At 5'7, a size 16 and 175 lbs my body fat percentage is only 15.5%. Several doctors have told me I shouldn't let my weight go any lower than 146 because of my abnormally large frame for my height. Just because someone looks larger visually doesn't mean their health is in danger. You aren't their doctor.

@ A Different Sarah – I don't think it's "hateful" for someone to point out that there is a different between being curvy and being fat. I agree that many people are hurtful and nasty when discussing weight but obesity is an epidemic in this country and factual discussions (i.e., she was overweight before) are a healthy step toward addressing this serious problem in our country. Many health problems (diabetes, high blood pressure, etc.) literally go away when people lose weight. To address your comment, though, the minimum weight your doctor suggested is still 30 pounds less than what you weight today so to say that a size 16 can be attributed to body shape doesn't really make sense.

I don't want to sound harsh, but for someone of average height, 6 isn't skinny. It's normal. We read a lot about obesity and BMI over 25, but ideal weight is really A LOT lower than most of us think. Google up a table for ideal weight- you will be shocked. Our standards have changes for what is skinny, but ideal weight is based on mortality rates- actual data about who lives longest. Almost all of us are over our ideal weights.

Any size that you're comfortable with is not OK. We should not be obsessive about being rail thin; but as a nation we are huge. I think Jennifer's face looks odd now too. There are some people who look (and feel) better with a little more weight on them. Recent studies have shown that people with a "slightly overweight" BMI actually live longer and healthier lives. One reason is likely that they are not stressed about keeping weight off. The other is that they have proper glucose in their bodies to keep them functioning.

I just worry that our obsession with skinny stamps out true health. I'm pretty sure it does. We can't really see that as we see what's on this end of the lens, but what's behind it is more important.

There is a common misconception that Dr. Atkins died because of his dietary habits. He died because he fell on the icy winter New York sidewalk and suffered a fatal head injury. I don't subscribe to the Atkins way of eating, but if you read CNN today you will see a study where a low-carb way of eating was actually the best for people with low HDL (good) cholesterol levels and was equally effective at losing weight. Please educate yourself before perpetuating urban legends.

I really dislike when media states this person is a ZERO carb dieter. It is completely misleading. He also stated that he has hit the gym at least 6 days a week. BR, your rhetoric is tired. Blah blah looks good at any size. This is a falacy that allows women to wallow in unhealthy habits because we give them diplomatically considered monikers like "pleasently plump" and "BBW" instead of calling them what they are, fat, obese, overweight. A doctor can tell you what is healthy for your height and build but I guarantee you that if your doctor is genuinely happy with your physical fitness, none of those monikers would apply. You would be considered healthy, slim, and beautiful. That is not hollywood image, that's health. Sure, Hollywood pushes women out of these healthy ranges to the other extreme to the point where women are too skinny, anorexic even. Obviously this wouldn't make your doctor happy either. It's a matter of proper balance and a healthy body image.

60% of you diet should come from carbs, preferrably complex carbohydrates; higher if you engage in endurance sports like distance running. Protein should represent the lowest percentage of your daily calories; a 60/25/15 carb/fat/protein split is ideal for most people. Your brain functions on carbohydrates. Low-carbing deprives your brain of glucose.

Raven is correct. If you read the article closely, Drew said he 'cut out all carbs', but then he talked about eating fruit and having 'steamed vegetables' with every meal. Those are carbs; good, healthy carbs. What Drew was talking about was cutting all the bad carbs like bread, rice, potatoes, pasta, sugar, etc... Atkins encouraged people to cut out vegetables and fruit as well and just eat meat and all the fat you wanted. That's why Atkin's diet was so unhealthy.

Actually, Atkins died because he slipped on ice and hit his head.

Second, he had a viral heart condition, which you can contract from touching the wrong door knob.

Third, to Switbo or whatever your name was, never once in his existence did Atkins advocate eating only meat. It is people like you, who never bother to actually read his book, that perpetuate this misinformation.

Atkins had dieters, during the FIRST of many rungs on his diet, remove ALL starchy vegetables, not just potatoes like you listed. That includes basically every non-green vegetable. This is because starch turns into glucose. He didn't say that they're bad or that you can never eat them again.

It is more unhealthy for an obese person to lose weight slowly and stay obese than it is for them to cut out certain foods and drop carbs very low for awhile while they drop a truck load of fat in a short period of time. As the fat comes off, the Atkins diet has them move to the next step, which adds in a lot of those 'bad' vegetables, then the next steps add fruit, then the next step adds more etc. So that by the time the person is at the end of the diet, they're eating a normal, healthy diet.

You're probably one of those people who think the moment you stop eating low carb, all the fat magically blasts itself back on, which is impossible - you only get fat if you eat too many calories. People who gain fat back after going off a low carb diet at the people that go back to eating the way they used to, which is the way that got them fat to start with. Then they're surprised when they get fat again.

      I'm so sick of stupidity.

@Vegie 1970- Protein should NOT be the lowest percentage! You are correct about carbs, but a person needs roughly 60% carbs and 20% protein and 20% fat. And if a person is doing a strength training routine, slightly more protein. People usually consume plenty of protein however, most of it has a high % of fat, leaner proteins will prevent a person from eating too much fat and therefor eating too many calories. A single gram of fat has 9 calories vs protein with 4 calories per gram.

Also, women dress more stylishly when they're thin because it is difficult to find stylish clothes for fat girls. I am currently on a diet and exercise regimen and hope to lose enough weight to fit into smaller sizes but I will never forget or forgive clothing stores that do not sell anything over a size 12. I have trouble even finding workout clothes in plus sizes. It's just more of society's double standard for fat people – get up out of your house and exercise/you're not welcome in public.

@ABJ – Give me a break. Size 16 is not "morbidly obese" (which, by the way, is a medical term that you are using completely incorrectly). She was probably in the "overweight" category, at 5'9" and roughly 190 pounds, but not even in the "obese" category, let alone "morbidly obese."

Her size was not healthy, sure, but certainly not a "severe health risk." Just because you find something unattractive doesn't mean it's unhealthy. I'm so sick of these people who try to disguise their disgust for fat people's looks with fake concern for health.

Are you serious, the guy sounds like a real insensitive jerk. Instead of being happy on how healthy she is now, he is whining her boobs are too small. He's a real winner.

@Marie- You are correct, her BMI at size 16 and 190 lbs would put her in the overweight category. I thought she was beautiful at size 16, but even being slightly overweight increases some risks. I'm proud of her for losing the weight and becoming healthier.

if you are 40 pounds overweight then you are morbidly obese and that is what was told to me by a doctor. she was morbidly obese but who cares she looked good then and looks great now. I am glad that she lost the weight because now she can be around longer for us all to hear that wonderful voice.

@Travail: no, morbidly obese is 100% more than your "ideal weight." So unless your doctor told you that your ideal weight is 40 pounds (which would make you, what, the size of a four year old), then that's wrong.

I noticed in her Weight Watcher commercial, we never really get a look at her. She stays in the shadows and never gets up.. I think that commercial was taped before she really lost any weight to speak of. I know its not easy to lose weight and keep it off. If that magazine cover is really her remains to be seen. But I wish her luck.

Gigi, Host of Girls Talk TV went through her fat phase (from 115 to 148) and it was not easy. She went from family telling her she was too skinny to her sisters telling her that her butt was way too big. Why has our society given into this false image that skinny=beauty? And we've fallen so hard too. We forget what's really important. List your top 10. Are they important to you or important to our society and then you. Is it all a facade?

@Mary, I think by "morbidly obese", ABJ was talking about the risk she posed to her husband, like accidentally rolling on top of him and squishing him like a tomato – very morbid indeed!

If she admits publicly to a size 16, then she was really probably an 18 or a 20. Looking at that picture, I don't see how anyone could think she looks anything other than great – she neither needs to add or lose more weight. She's still super curvy, and it's accentuated more by her smaller waistline. At her height and frame, I don't think she could go much smaller than a 6 anyway. I sell women's garments, and it is amazing how sizing gone to either XS or plus size.

I thought she was happy with her size before. She was always saying that she liked h er size, blah blah, apparently that was a bunch of crap! Seems like the pressure of being a thin woman got to her too.

    • BMI facts

BMI is how you define obesity. BMI 20-25 is good. 25-30 is overweight. 30-40 is obese and 40 or greater is morbid obesity. You need height and weight to calculate it. 5'9" and 190 lbs is BMI of 28.1, which is overweight. With advancing age, the body fats naturally increases. Additionally, overweight people tend to become obese, so its always best to make effort to reduce it. BMI calculators are available on the net.-ObGyn, MD

Bunch of fat people in here trying to justify being fat. There is no need to justify it, stop eating junk food and exercise a few times a week and you'll lose weight. Its really not hard, it just takes dedication.

Marie, couldn't have said it better. P.S. THIS is gorgeous. Jennifer says she'll never be skinny. Who cares? Skinny looks disgusting on most people, AND is just as unhealthy, albeit in different ways/with dif. side-effects. Jennifer looks beautiful, and her body looks perfect. When will women realize that all most men care about are hip to waist ratio. That's all! They were specifically programmed that way! Some might be more breast men, or leg men, or butt men, but it still boils down to hip to waist, and not thinness. Runway models have been thin in the past because they need to fit the sample size, and it is cheaper to use less fabric than more. Designers save the expense for the gowns people actually order and make a real profit on. Think model plane, or model house. Same reasoning. But size 0 doesn't pertain to the actual desirability of a woman.

What's in a word? Obese...morbidly obese...? Fat is Fat...there's no way to sugarcoat it people. Sure she was fat, but she did something about it, unlike most of the readers making comments on here. If you don't want to be labeled as overweight, obese, morbidly obese, etc. then put down the ice cream and snacks that's you're eating while online reading this and get to work!

Skinny has never been considered unhealthy, although anorexic is... Why keep extra weight on when it could contribute to being unhealthy? Some of these commentors just don't get it.

Depending on the underlying build of a person size 16 can definitely be considered morbidly obese. This is the problem about our overweight society, too many people not understanding the risks of people who are dangerously, MEDICALLY obese. She is a small statured woman, she was medically and morbidly obese. Its time for all of us to be concerned about the fattening of America, espcially its children.

Americans are way too much overweight. Anyone making excuses for being big does not care about themselves. Someone who expects their partner to love them no matter how big they get is so totally wrong. Americans are lazy and they want everyone around them to be just as lazy as them and when someone does something about their weight it just makes these lazy people furious with themselves because they wish they could lose weight too. By lazy, I not only mean those that sit and stuff their faces drinking diet sodas, feasting on sugary foods, etc., but also those that are lazy and ignore their health by not having their thyroid checked or some other medical issues that may contribute to their huge size. Come on Americans! Get FIT!

@Fitness Coach while no one can be certain about the size of anyone commenting on this article, I am certain of two things 1. Losing weight is difficult work and anyone who says otherwise has never had to do it and 2. If you are truly a Fitness Coach I feel sorry for all those you are "helping".

Jennifer looks great, love the dress.. not so sure about the buzzed head though..

I doubt that, actually. Most men are pretty harsh when it comes to the looks of the women they are with. It goes both ways. You get too fat, they stray, you get too skinny, they do too.
