Katy Perry opens up on religious upbringing

Katy Perry sang about kissing girls, and now she's talking tongues: In the new issue of Rolling Stone, Perry reveals that her Christian minister parents spoke in tongues when she was growing up.

The California girl, who has "Jesus" tattooed on her left wrist, tells the magazine, "Speaking in tongues is as normal to me as 'Pass the salt..' It's a secret, direct prayer language to God." Perry, 25, adds that her dad usually speaks in tongues while her mom plays interpreter. "That's their gift," she explains.

Speaking of gifts, Perry reportedly bought fiance Russell Brand a $200,000 ticket to outer space aboard the Virgin Galactic for his 35th birthday.

But if Perry feels lucky to have found love with the British comic, she'll never admit it. In the Perry household, she explains, "I wasn't able to say I was lucky because my mother would rather us say that we were blessed, and she also didn't like that lucky sounded like Lucifer."

In fact, the quirky brunette reveals, "I wasn't allowed to eat Lucky Charms, but I think that was the sugar. I think my mom lied to me about that one."

The new issue of Rolling Stone hits newsstands on Friday.

I believe God is doing something in Katy Perry's life. Though her upbringing may be a bit bizarre, Gods love for her is totally pure and He desires to have a relationship with her. I chose the purity in Gods love towards us than the misinterpreted beliefs and actions of others.

"Speaking in tongues" is a subject to provoke extremities of positions between "liberal", traditional and radical fundamentalists. The poor in spirit will sit under their table and pick the falling scraps of their arguments and go the heaven. And then they would beg father Abraham to let them cross over to be with those poor in spirit to quench their thirst, but Abraham would reply "sorry, there's too wide a gulf between us."

Anything that comes from the Bible should not negatively distorted by others. Speaking in tongues is a sign of the Holy Spirit. But for Katy Perry to say that she is a Christian is a LIE. Maybe she grew up that way but she is NOT a christian. On Youtube there are many videos that shows her revealing that she SOLD HER SOUL TO THE DEVIL. Along with many other music artist. This article about her religion is a way for her to cover up her real religious beliefs, so that she can still be seen as wholesome and win her fans and others approval.

To Sherke, and to all the above who won't listen to Jesus know in your heart, your day is coming where you WILL answer to HIM then. Ms. Perry is absolute sane, and in good standing in what she has said about tounges. I believe and yet I still have fleshly desires. But God is GOD, and all need to Accept HIS Son JESUS as the savior of SINS. The trick of demons is to make you believe there is no Jesus and you can accept Him but not live totally perfect to make it to Heaven. Listen Please all , God Is LOVE. and He is watching and listening for your Call

Read about Speaking in Tongues at Verse by Verse Ministry or any verse which you would find difficult
to understand. You are welcomed to write to the Website and will be entertained. by Stephen Armstrong.
The Bible says many are called, few chosen, at the Great Flood only few were saved, Sodom and
Gomorrah, the same happened. The Bible tells us that many will say to the Lord that they did signs,
miracles and wonders in His name and he replied that He did not know them, are workers of iniquity,
and to leave! Type "The Woman Who Rides The Beast" to find out who is the deceiver of all times and times
to come. A contrite and repentant heart is what God wants from sinners not show of worship!

While I respect everyone's feelings about the Bible, I cannot agree that the KJV is the true Word of God. The books that became the Bible as we know it today were written in languages such as Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek and probably many others. English did not exist as a language 4000 years ago. Also, no matter how correctly you translate from one language to another, some of the original can be lost. I can only imagine if something is translated incorrectly.

Jesus said you can move mountains if you have faith the size of a mustard seed. Faith can be very powerful, so if someone handles a poisonous snake, I can see how they could survive if bitten. Personally, I don't believe that God insists that we show our faith by handling snakes.

I gather that Katy Perry had a Pentecostal upbringing, as I don't know of any other Christian faith that has speaking in tongues. As conservative as Baptists and Nazerenes are, they don't speak in tongues.

To close, I would just say, trust in God, but don't trust those who tell you to trust in God.

My mom used to talk in tongues all the time when she was driving, and it really freaked me out. She also used to throw holy water on me when I was sleeping and say things in tongues.

My mom was a certifiable crazy, nut, bi-polar that spent most of her adult life physically locked up in mental hospitals, so, you can see why anyone that talks in tongues I think is a nut. I once came home and my mom and about 10 other nut cases were all sitting around speaking in tongues. I'm still trying to figure out how they did this or wanted to do this without drugs.

After reading the following posts, I realize that there are some people confused regarding some issues, but the one thing I see most is how words are used for the purpose to hurt others. Once words are spoken the damage is done. Be careful what you say about others because you won’t be able to take your words back. Once they’re out there, they’re out there. Your words either condemn you or justify you. If you desire life, want to live a long time, and experience good things, keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking guile. Depart from evil and do right. Seek peace and pursue it. In the years to come, everyone on this blog will change their opinions about things because their thinking will change. So watch what you say and try to speak only positive things. And if you can’t say anything good, don’t say anything at all. People will probably like you better.

I see everyone found a way to argue about the Bibles legitimacy.. Leave the Bible alone it is legit. What we have here is a girl whose parents play with demons and so does the girl, just in a different way. Why do I say this? Because the Bible reveals that the gift of tongues would be done away with and it was. God no longer uses that form of miracle to preach his message which was understood by the people speaking the languages in the past it was a way to spread God's messages to other nations. Instead of the gargle being passed off today "speaking in tongues" clearly the work of demons. And the girl encouraging lesbianism also the work of demons. So there you have it. They have no right to boast of God or belief in him because they work for the opposition.

Dave, you are missing out on such a wonderful experience. It is so sad. You can't deny an experience. My daughter received the Gift of speaking in tongues in the first grade, my son at age 10 and myself not until I was 26. You see, I know the other side. I lived it. I was addicted to coke, meth, crack, pills – all of it. My mother overdosed from heroin when I was 18 months old. I hit bottom. I found myself at a "holy roller" church 19 years ago and never looked back. The Lord changed my life. We dont fake this experience, it is real. How would you feel if you knew something was real because you experienced it for YOURSELF, and you have all these people telling you you dont know what you are talking about. It not only saved me, but my husband, who was hooked on PCP. Dont tell me there is no God. Demons? i think not. Demons would still have me on drugs. Thanks

people here are taking scripture out of context. The bible gives different examples of the manifestations of tongues. The Apostle Paul writes that he who speaks in tongues edifies himself (builds up). But he also places emphasis on when speaking in tongues to pray for the understanding.

I know 24years ago I was living a total life of debauchery and going nowhere. Then one day watching the 700 club on T.V. I decided that I had had enough and committed my life to Jesus. I felt a change immediately and I could not get enough of praising God. That night I went to bed and still I could not get enough of praising God Even in my sleep. Then suddenly in the middle of the night I woke up. I raised up and said Lord help me! and instantly the power and presence of God filled my room. The change was like turning a light on in a dark room and having the darkness flee. As soon as God's presence filled my room I felt a knot in my stomach begin to travel up from my stomach towards my mouth. And about the time it hit my throat and all of a sudden it was like a champagne cork going off. I began to speak in other tongues praising and glorifying God. All of this happened before even going to church.

One thing I have come to learn is this experience though it may manifest in different ways it is by the same Spirit of God. However don't get lost on the issue of tongues. What really matters is do you know where you will spend eternity if you died today? Or your life maybe in complete turmoil like mine was 24 years ago. But I can tell you from experience that God has a perfect plan for your life, one of hope and peace. All it takes to bring that plan into effect for your life is faith in Jesus Christ. Which means understanding who he is and why he came to this Earth (which is historical fact).

That's not to say you will not have some hard times in your life. Becuase it is through the hard times that we grow in life. God promises though that he will help you through the hard times. That he will NEVER leave you or forsake you. Even when you mess up. Which we all will becuase we all fall short of the glory of God. But becuase of his grace and the Fact that Christ paid for are sins past, present, and future. God forgives as as we realize the mistakes and ask forgiveness.

Just a Christians perspective! You may agree with it or you may not. You may look at it as foolishness or you may feel that tug in your heart to want to know more. if you want to know more then simply find a Christian church in your area and start checking it out.

"Terrty: Actually, that verse you just referred to is symbolic, not literal, as is much of the Scripture found in the Bible."

Just as Jesus is a symbol, as well as is the story of his crucifixion. There is no evidence in such a person or what happened to him, but as symbols, as metaphors, they tell a larger truth. Christians, though, cherry pick what they want from their bible, so the nonsense they don't want to believe literally becomes "symbolic," while the nonsense they choose to believe is "literal."

As a born-again Christian for 17 years now, I read the Bible daily to seek God's guidance and to ensure I walk close to Him, but In regard to speaking in tongues, yes it is in the Bible, but it was meant for the time at Pentecost (hence Pentecostals), and occurred again in Caesarea 38 years after Pentecost, but the Bible is clear in regard to the person speaking in tongues. It has to be of edifying the church (not some pig latin that Kate's father does), plus there needs to be 2 people present to be witnesses to what the person is saying. For just her mother to "translate" is for show. Here is the Scripture regarding speaking in tongues: 1 Corinthians 14:27-28 If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret. But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.

Huh?! in the old testament speaking in tongues, refer to the apostles speaking a different language. It wasn't random gibberish they were speaking known languages that members in the crowd could understand, and otherwise would have had no knowledge of what the apostles were trying to say. It be as if I started speaking Spanish but had no knowledge of Spanish, so a Spanish audience could understand me.

If Christians want their religion not to be viewed as foolish mysticism, dropping this speaking in tongues nonsense would be a good start. Speaking in tongues and praying in tongues are different things. Many Pentecostals pray in tongues. Very few speak in tongues. 1 Corinthians 14:2 talks about speaking in a tongue "does not speak to men but to God." Speaking to God is prayer.
It says that "no one understands him; he utters mysteries in his spirit."

In verse 4, the Apostle Paul writes that "He who speaks in tongues edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church."

So speaking in tongues, in terms of Acts 2, was a prophetic utterance. Praying in tongues, which I would suspect Katy Perry and her family did, are actually prayers to God.

I am a proud Christian. I serve an amazing, loving God. I have not personally been annointed with the gift of tongues, but several people in my church have. It is a truly amazing experience. Someone does not speak it in every service, but when the Holy spirit is truly moving, God does amazing things. I have witnessed with my own eyes, people's lives being transformed. You have to let go, and let God. When you have a relationship with our savior, you can feel his amazing presence and when you serve the kingdom, you will see how your life can be blessed. John 3:16.

Anyone who babbles and then claims to speak in tongues, as a "gift" from God, is lying. The Bible clearly states that the apostles were given special gifts by the holy spirit. Those gifts included speaking in tongues, casting out demons, etc. The apostles also had the ability to pass on those gifts to anyone on whom they laid their hands. There is no indication that the people who had the gifts transferred to them directly from the apostles could then pass on the gift again, however. So, that is where it ended. The apostles are long dead and the people to whom they passed on those gifts are also long dead. No one alive today has those special abilities. And, as has been accurately noted by many here, speaking in tongues is not random babbling. It means to speak in a language which you otherwise don't understand but that can be understood by the hearer. I don't speak Greek but if I had the ability to speak in tongues, then I could say something to a Greek person and they would understand me in their native language.

The bible states that "Speaking in Tongues" means that EVERYONE CAN UNDERSTAND the speaker. There is no need for an interpreter. Anybody who speaks so that noone can understand in possessed by a demon!

Acts 2: A crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. ...How is it that each of us hears them in his own native language? ...We hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!"

But these responses, and believing in the glorified comic book, we call the bible, proves how incredibly primitive people still are.

If the bible is the inerrant word of god, then it must be taken literally. If you are interpreting it, or listening to someone's interpretation of it, then it is, by definition, flawed. Thank you for a balanced, objective view of this, and your word usage was very comprehensive. I heard a Katy Perry interview, and honestly, I don't hear her preaching about what others need to believe. She was actually really polite, and pretty crazy fun. Open, enough. I kinda think if she's open enough to both experience the indoctrination of her Christian fundamental upbringing and still enjoy the freedom to explore other modes of life, that she is both brave and well raised. But again that's me totally throwing YET ANOTHER opinion out there. Our differences are a fact of life, and somehow they even unify just because they are that fact. Thanks again.

Faith is a cop-out. If the only way you can accept an assertion is by faith, then you are conceding that it can’t be taken on its own merits

The fact that an opinion has been widely held is no evidence whatever that it is not utterly absurd; indeed in view of the silliness of the majority of mankind, a widespread belief is more likely to be foolish than sensible.

So, by your lights, someone will spend an eternity in torment simply due to a cognitive error? I know the boilerplate evangelical answer is, God doesn't sent anyone to hell, we chose our fate. But imagine the average Mormon. From birth he or she has been taught that their faith is the "true" one, and that what most consider normative Christianity is apostate. Marinated in this faith, he or she has been taught also what apostate Christians will argue, and why their reasoning is faulty, and why Mormonism is true. Steeped in this from birth!

And yet you assert that this belief is willful, volitional "rebellion" against God? How absurd!

@JAB: Yes, I appreciate what you are saying, brother, however, the Holy Bible is still man's written "version" of The LORD's original Word. Even the King James Version is still just a "version" (refer Joe's comments above). And for centuries, that very same Bible has been translated and then re-translated into several DIFFERENT "versions", all with, guess what? TOTALLY DIFFERENT WORDING!!!! Did The LORD HIMself not say (through Darius the King) that we are not to alter HIS WORD?
So, in other words, unless you are quoting directly from original manuscripts written by those who were in HIS presence when HE first uttered them, in HIS original language as spoken, I'll take MY Word direct from The Source, if it's all the same to you. GOD bless. 🙂

Scripture is pretty clear that there must be order and an interpreter. I also don't claim to know which parts of the bible are literal and which aren't. I know I don't have to handle snakes to be a Christian, so I won't be doing that. Also, I don't speak in tongues, and I don't claim to be able to "interpret" the bible (to me, it says what it says and I just try live by it without pushing it on people). I just don't see the point in trying to overspiritualize everything to do with Christianity. God likes spiritual fruit, not religious nuts.

I could impose various accents on the utterances, too, implying different lauguages. The brain can often pull this off very easily, having become familiar with the cadence and structure of speech. As an atheist, I wonder just who I might be talking to. My pets do seem to understand it if I do give it an emotional feel.

We as people are far from perfect since the birth of sin. That is why Jesus Christ came to die on the cross. He was perfection in human form. The ultimate sacrifice. Yes, people will disappoint us. Yes, there will be false christians, prophets etc. But OUR heavenly father is very REAL. It is important to develope a personal relationship with God. Christians are supposed to reflect God's characteristics alot of people struggle with that but it doesnt mean he loves us any less....Lets not judge one another. Everyone will be held accountable for their actions.

Nowwadaminit. I thought that you had to accept Jesus Christ into your heart as your personal savior for salvation, and that nothing you could do, no matter how good or evil you were, would matter one iota toward that goal. Which of course means that, if neither accepted Jesus Christ into their hearts as their personal savior (a pretty safe bet), both Anne Frank and her murderer, Adolf Hitler, are equally suffering eternal torment in hell as we speak. By which many find Christian salvific doctrine utterly absurd and evil. It isn't a matter of "denying the Holy Spirit", it's about, well, if this is the truth, I can see groveling before this God in sheer terror, as with most "gods" in human history, but I'm kinda missing the love and compassion part.

And, now you tell me that I WILL be held accountable for my actions?

      Imagine my confusion.

Now you're telling me that we will be held accountable for our actions?

Verse 12 of Chapter 12 reads "The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ."

Verses 27-30 of Chapter 12 continue "Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. And in the church God has appointed first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, also those having gifts of healing, those able to help others, those with gifts of administration, and those speaking in different kinds of tongues. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret?"

Speaking in tongues in the Bible was for the purpose of evangelizing to Gentiles using common languages. It was never a private prayer to God which required translation. That nonsensical stuff that gets spewed now serves no purpose. And don't forget that the Devil caused a serpent to speak in tongues, so that power is not exclusive to God. But even Satan had the good sense to make sure it was something that someone understood.

I think that you should read 1 Corinthians 13 and 14 for a better understanding of spiritual gifts. In 14 the Apostle Paul talks about speaking in tongues. Verse 2 reads "For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God. Indeed, no one understands him; he utters mysteries with his spirit." Verse 13 goes on to read "For this reason anyone who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret what he says." Finally, verses 27 and 28 read "If anyone speaks in a tongue, two—or at the most three—should speak, one at a time, and someone must interpret. If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet in the church and speak to himself and God."

As such, this should not be confused with what happened at Pentecost when the Apostles where filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke in other tongues that the crowd heard as their own native language (Acts 2). No need for interpreting here.

Just becuase you may not understand something does not mean that it is it is insane or made up or any of the other things that people are typing and thinking. In fact it is VERY sad that very few understandstand what it means maybe you all should check yourselves instead of attemping to "put down" something that your not capable of understanding at this time.

Let's read what Paul actually said in context:

Verses 9 – 13 read "Unless you speak intelligible words with your tongue, how will anyone know what you are saying? You will just be speaking into the air. Undoubtedly there are all sorts of languages in the world, yet none of them is without meaning. If then I do not grasp the meaning of what someone is saying, I am a foreigner to the speaker, and he is a foreigner to me. So it is with you. Since you are eager to have spiritual gifts, try to excel in gifts that build up the church. For this reason anyone who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret what he says.

Verses 39 adn 40 read "Therefore, my brothers, be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues. But everything should be done in a fitting and orderly way."

If you read the whole chapter and not just a single verse, you will realize that Paul does not state that the gift of tongues is a load of hot air. It is a gift which when used properly will edify God. However, the Corinthians were not using it properly which is why he had to correct them on its proper use.

I was probably the biggest sceptic of all as far as speaking in tongues is concerned having witnessed first hand the preparation for a fake speaking and interpretation in a non-denominationl church. There are so many churches faking it it may seem that there is nothing real anywhere. But I stand to tell you...There is a real church where the signs and wonders are real. I was raised in a very conservative Christian household. I believe that I understand the practical purpose of speaking in tongues, and as CB points out, it was being misused by the Corinthians. MsLady74, CB also makes my point for me in citing verse 13 that the one speaking in tongues pray that he may be able to interpret.

The act of speaking in tongues is not a prayer to God, but CALLS for a prayer to God so that the meaning may be known. Having witnessed speaking in tongues, and as often as not, having none in attendance that could interpret, I must discern that hysterical act should remain largely a curiosity to observers and derive no measurable spiritual benefit. If, as described by the Apostle Paul, the words are discernible then I accept that they may have value. But as God is not one to change his purpose, I must infer that one who speaks in tongues with no one to interpret is not in fact fulfilling God's purpose for speaking in tongues, which was to make believers out of all men.

      August 2, 2010 at 3:15 pm | Report abuse |
    • Read the Bible carefully

If you read carefully, you will notice that "speaking in tongues" is simply not hysterics or babbling but has a specific purpose. In 1 Cor., it also says that it should be orderly which is in contrast to many attention-speaking antics happening in many misguided churches.

Speaking in tongues was to spread the gospel to other people who do not speak your language. Read the Bible carefully and in context especially starting in the first episode of it in the Book of Acts. You will notice that it was to spread the Gospel of Jesus. The apostles were able to speak to others who came from different regions with different language simultaneously and still be understood. That was the amazing part of it. The apostles were never knew how to speak the language of other nations but as they spoke, people from different nationalities were still able to understand them. Those antics you see in many so-called churches today are at best faked. At worst, possession by some force that is even more dangerous.

Speaking in tongues has nothing to do with being saved. Paul makes it clear that not everyone has the gift of tongues. In fact he innumerates many other gifts that a person may have been given with.

And finally remember: There are many spirits which the Bible presents or warns us about. The Holy Spirit and evil spirits. There are many instances in the Bible of someone being possessed by evil spirits. Now, many of these individuals who claim to speak in tongues are faking it. However, some of these "speaking in tongues" in some so-called churches are real . Very real. Many of these people are controlled or possessed by a spirit.

The question is: which spirit? judge ye for yourself.

By their fruits you shall know them.

@Aaron I am not disagreeing with you but GOD works on different people in HIS timing so even if I am not yet able to discern what I others are saying while they are speaking in tongues. I know when I am praying and what I am saying and that I only speak in tongues when I am in a DEEP spritual prayer and praise with GOD.

      Read the Bible Carefully –
That's why I bring up the point about the Devil speaking through the serpent.

      MsLady74 –
If you are that diligent in your study, then you must have also come to the reasoning that the 'time for miracles' has passed. Speaking in tongues is no longer necessary to the salvation of man, since the Gospel is available in every language spoken by man. Certainly, speaking in tongues is miraculous. But everything one needs to know for salvation has already been supplied and recorded through the Saints. And God can understand me just fine in the words I already speak fluently.

Looking to see that innocents are protected, like children not being harmed physically and mentally, making sure that those that are grieved are comforted, those that are without shelter are provided cover, that the least of us is looked after. Basically, it could mean that humanity remains human in caring, compassion and servitude to each other.

People actually do get healed. Sounds crazy but it happens, and I know a few people who have had a full recovery after having a deep brain hemorrhage, people who no longer have diabetes, or had huge tumors one week then the next week they were nowhere to be found. Do some research on it. While many many preachers emphasize healing in an unhealthy way (and probably do so to get money, too), it doesn't make it any less real, nor are all preachers who teach that healing is real absolutely crazy. We believe what we believe for a reason, not just for some weird mystical experience from God.

And I'll just add that speaking in tongues is in the Bible, and Christians should treat the topic seriously, and not just run away from it cause some wacko churches use it (even speaking in tongues can be misused and look completely idiotic when people do it for, like what I said above, a mystical experience.)

I agree Katy is a hypocrite. Religion has been the greatest source of art in all mediums for centuries now. Also, Madonna and Gaga are both Catholic. It is perfectly reasonable for artists to make statements about their own faith. Where Katy goes wrong is demanding that others stick to her own unique interpretation of what Christianity is. I am sure there are many Christians who think it goes against the Bible's teachings to sing about kissing girls, etc. Practice your own faith, let others practice theirs.

Ecc 1:14 I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit.
Mat 16:26 For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
I Tim 6:10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

@Terrty: Actually, that verse you just referred to is symbolic, not literal, as is much of the Scripture found in the Bible. You have to be VERY careful what you take literally. The "taking up of serpents" means the dealing with "snakes in the grass", aka "wolves in sheep's clothing", aka evil people (the "workers of iniquity") who are "of their father the devil". And the "poison" is the lies they tell. In other words, it means that true followers of GOD are immune to false prophets and those who worship satan. But hey, don't take my word for it. Go grab a rattler and shake its tail. Then come back and tell us how that worked out for ya, huh? ;)P

Terry, there are a couple specific incidents of "speaking in tongues" in the Bible. There is no clear indication that the handling of poisonous snakes, speaking in "tongues", etc., is evidence/proof of one being a true Christian.

Terry, Actually it doesn't say the snakes are venomous (at least not the passage in Luke in the edition I am looking at) or that the snakes themselves have to be venomous (but obviously there would have to be something that makes it unique or dangerous to non Christians). It does say that they can drink poisons and not be harmed, so ok then if you are a true Christian you would be able to drink poison and it won't do anything to you. Anyway I wish someone does an independently verifiable scientific study on that. By the way I heard that as long as a person (Christian or not) doesn't have any cuts in his mouth or GI tract, he can drink many snake venoms and not be harmed (venom molecules are too big to get absorbed through the GI tract).

@Terry - Unfortunately, you have fallen for a very common mistake. A true Christian will have those signs following them, that is the truth. The mistake is your belief that if you see those signs, you are looking at a true Christian. That is like saying "Cars have 4 wheels", therefore, if it has 4 wheels, it is a car. A Christian will have those signs following, but just because you see those signs, don't think you are seeing a Christian.

@BewtyCall - True, there is some symbolism to that verse, but if you look at the Apostle Paul, you will find that the verse can be interpreted quite literally.

terry – i am a christian and am studying apologetcs. you need to do research. the section of the bible you are referring to (about speaking in tongues, taking up serpents, drinking poison), which is Mark 9-20, should be discounted as all of our earliest known manuscripts omit that section entirely – it is most likely a section added in later manuscripts. The true ending of Mark appears to be lost (perhaps that ending section of the earliest scroll had been lost or deteriorated). Do not be discouraged – all mainstream scholars today (even those that are not Christian) believe that over 95% of the Bible we have today is accurate based on all known evidences and manuscripts; however, there are a few (very few, but you hit on one of them) parts that do not correspond to any of the earliest manuscript evidence and all recent Bible translations either omit those sections or clearly indicate their "questionability". The King James Version still has this with no indications, but its an old translation – all newer translations based on true scholarly research do highlight this textual problem. God bless.

FYI, Joe's comments are NOT complete garbage. While I don't have a source for the 95% of scholars comment, in terms of ancient literature, such as the Iliad, the Odessy, Plato, etc., the Bible has the best accuracy in terms of manuscript transmission. While I'm going from memory, the Iliad only has around 11 ancient copies, while the Bible has hundreds. The Dead Sea Scrolls showed that while there were minor differences between those ancient texts and the ones we had at the time they were discovered (almost 2000 years!), next to none of them significantly changed the meaning of the text in any way. Of course, whether you believe what the Bible says is a matter of faith, but in terms of whether the text we have today adheres to the ancient texts, there is good scientific support for accuracy in that sense.

      1. On the 95% of the Bible is faithfully transmitted from ancient sources idea... so what? It was nonsense in the beginning and it is still nonsense. Most of Christian theology is an effort to make sense out of nonsense.

The original teaching of Jesus had entirely to do with enticing God to come to earth and establish His kingdom on earth and throw out the Romans. Jesus fully expected God to do just that when he entered Jerusalem in his mock parade. He must have been more surprised than anyone when he was summarily executed.

Then the first Christians taught that Jesus was returning within the lifetimes of those who had known him, but after a few centuries that idea wore out.

Then Constantine got sick of all the debating so he ordered a Bible assembled and a church established, so Christianity became Catholicism – a whole new faith with startling new concepts like the infallibility of the Pope, the trinity, etc.

Then, Martin Luther got sick of Catholicism so we got Protestantism, which is a watered-down, disorganized version of Catholicism.

Then, Protestantism morphed into televangelism where ministers learned how to really make the celestial cash register ring for them. They don't handle serpents any more, but they cast out imaginary demons and heal the healthy bodies of their hired shills.

      2. As for the handling of serpents being a "symbolic" passage, that is Christian theology kicking in to make sense out of nonsense. Whenever a verse is obvious crap, it is plumbed for its "symbolic" meaning. How do Christians cherry-pick those "symbolic" verses out from the "literal" ones? Why isn't being "born again" a literal description of reincarnation? Why isn't the story of Adam and Eve symbolic? Why isn't the story of God giving Solomon a thousand wives as reward for his wisdom symbolic? Or are they.

Read the Bible with fresh eyes, as if you were a man from Mars who has never heard of God. You will be stunned with its contents – and I don't mean that in a good way.

The west Texas deserts are home to a lot of rattlesnakes, but they are shy and would much rather run than fight – like me. I have only handled one, which had taken up residence in my garage. It slithered behind lawn mowers and workbenches while I chased it down. It took about an hour because I was being so careful. I knew that the snake would strike me if it could. I finally pinned it down with a mop handle and carried it out to the desert where it belonged.

Early Christian evangelists, I have read, would handle snakes, drink "poison," cast out demons, and cure the psychosomatic illnesses of hysterical hayseeds. Modern evangelists prefer snake oil to snakes. Personally, I think rattlesnakes are safer than the evangelists. You can trust a snake. Snakes are honest.

Actually the Bible says exactly how to identify true Christians: John 13:35, (...if you have love among yourselves.) By the way, the "tongues" mentioned in the Bible were the miraculous gift given by God to true believers that allowed them to speak other languages, and thus spread the good news to all the language groups at that time in their Roman/middle eastern world. No longer useful so it went away. The babble that churchgoers today call "tongues" is just that, babble. All it does is draw attention to the person, i.e, people like Perry's family.
