DC Comics gives Wonder Woman a makeoverSay goodbye to the bustier and hotpants: Wonder Woman is getting a makeover at the age of 69, and the heroine is now keeping herself covered while fighting crime. The new costume, created by celebrated artist and DC Comics co-publisher Jim Lee, is made up of a red top with the signature "WW" logo; a cropped blue biker jacket with white stars; and skin-tight navy blue pants and matching boots. "The bracelets are still there, but made more colorful, tied on the inside and over the hand, with a script W on each of them that form WW when she holds them side by side…and if you get hit by one of them, it leaves a W mark," said writer J. Michael Straczynski, in a post on DC Comics's "The Source." "This is a Wonder Woman who signs her work."
The edgier outfit will be unveiled in issue No. 600 of "Wonder Woman," which hits stands today. The origins of the Amazon princess are also reinvented: Instead of being raised on Paradise Island, the young Diana is smuggled out as a child while her Amazon sisters remain behind and are murdered. J. Michael Straczynski - who penned the screenplay for Angelina Jolie's 2008 drama "Changeling" - is taking over the comic book series, and he told the New York Times that he's excited about Wonder Woman's new wardrobe. "She's been locked into pretty much the exact same outfit since her debut in 1941," Straczynski said. "If you're going to make a statement about bringing Wonder Woman into the 21st century, you need to be bold and you need to make it visual. I wanted to toughen her up, and give her a modern sensibility." And besides, he added, "What woman only wears only one outfit for 60-plus years?" |

Well…….. that wont last very long.
Hi, i feel that i noticed you visited my weblog thus i got here to return the choose?.I'm attempting to to find things to enhance my site!I suppose its ok to make use of a few of your ideas!!
Some really fantastic information, Sword lily I discovered this. "Genius is one of the many forms of insanity." by Cesare Lombroso.

I admit that Wonder Woman's costume needs a change, but I feel they went in the wrong direction. They really should get rid of the jacket because it makes her look way too juvenile, like an angry confused teen with a large chip on her shoulders and her "W" marked bracelets seem incredibly tacky (like Adam West Batman) though J. Michael Straczynski stated that HE wanted a more modern "street fighter" look. Unfortunately, this is a look that belonged and stayed in the 90's. I found it very hard to take her seriously because she doesn't quite portray that classic sense of maturity, self-confidence, and pride that I found so appealing with the classic look.
If they really wanted a new look to succeed, then maybe they should have her costume look more like that of an ancient Greek Warrior. Lose the pants and give her Pteryges (armored leather pleats) with a signature belt and tall light-armored boots (still show the skin of her legs and shoulders, just not all of it, to really help define her physic). This could help give more to the respect that she IS a proud Amazon and warrior because with the new look, we only have her word that she is an Amazon, not the visual portrayal, which is very important for any super hero.
The new look could possibly work if they got RID of the jacket (it's just too juvenile, would work for Wonder Girl, though) made a few tweaks to the cuirass, brought back a tweaked version of her tall boots, and did away with the "W"s on her fists (way too tacky).
She looks like the love child of Superman and Spiderman.
Why must they think of a new gimmick for Wonder Woman–leaving an imprint when she punches? Whatever happened to the powers and gadgets she used to wear? Maybe I'm not completely up-to-date with the Wonder Woman universe, but I never hear about how her tiara grants her the ability to speak any language, or her earrings give her enough oxygen to breathe/survive anywhere, and I read about those in a reprint of an old WW comic–back when she wore a skirt and roman-like lace-up sandals. The only thing ever focused on WW are her bracelets. As far as her new look goes, now instead of having a look that was all her own, now WW looks like every other supergal in the comic universe. I think she needed a new look, but I don't think this is quite it–and her hair needs to be longer and back with its gorgeous wavy hair!
Some characters should be left as the are.Wonder Woman is one of them. However some are in bad need of change.Take for instance,Blackhawk.Remember the group of WWll American heroes who wore blue uniforms with a logo of a black hawk on a yellow circular background.Their group was made up of different nationalities. They fought Nazi's,but one member was a German, their sidekick was a Chinese named Chop Chop.Black Americans were also fighting Nazi's but were excluded from the group.Do this makeover, add a Black Hero to Blackhawk.
I am the same age as Wonder Woman. We grew up together. She has always fought crime and terrorism as an American. This has alway's been reflected in her outfit,Red,white, blue and yellow. This new makeover bears no white. This is un-American.
I am the only gay in the village...
Seriously, this Wonder Woman looks like she could kick my ass. The other never did.
It's about time something was done for the best woman superhero that was ever created! My hat goes off to and I salute Mr. Jim Lee for bringing her wardrobe up to date. I grew up watching Wonder Woman like thousands of other women. When I noticed that many of the DC comics were becoming movies, I began to salivate just thinking about Wonder Woman in a movie! How dissapointed I am to see that after countless other movies she has yet to grace the silver screen. My hope is that DC corrects this before the silver screen becomes platinum!
Well........ that wont last very long.
Terrible costume but it had potential- I think what's bothering me is the odd color scheme and shoes. She looks like she's from the 80's.
If you don't read comics, then don't worry about her new look. You would have no clue what influences are around her in her storyline.
If you do read comics and you don't like it, well, I respect your opinion.
I for one, like the change.
What to comic books have to do with Obama?
How many people posting on here have actually read the comics? I think there's alot of complaining from people who don't even read the comics. The comic industry is a business, and they need to keep up. Sometimes the changes work, sometimes they don't. Remember when they revamped Superman completely? Doomsday killed him, and they recreated him with new powers and a new costume. The change did not last long. But if you look at any of the classic heros in the comics they have all changed. Mr Straczynski is a very good writer, read it for a year and then decide.
The new WW looks anorexic, too weak to fight. And if you wanted to bring her look up to date, the latest thing is a Wonder Bra that makes it look like you ADDED 2 cup sizes, not a look that she lost 2 cup sizes.
yeah, looks a lot like another "makeover" they gave her in the 80's. It stunk then, it stinks now. Giver her back her real appearance. If you want to make a new hero that looks like that, go for it -just leave WW alone.
Don't worry. She'll eventually revert to a version of her original costume as did Superman and Spider-Man when their costumes were temporarily redesigned. Wonder Woman underwent a similar radical makeover in the late 60s when her powers were removed and her original costume was done away with entirely. Within a couple of years it was all back again. Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Spider-Man & Captain America's traditional costumes are as important to their iconic natures as the characters themselves. Any radical change will only be to generate a sales spike but will never be permanent.
garyll you should go to jail for racism. what an ass.
If she had not got a makeover she would forever be associated with Lynda Carter the half-Hispanic actress.
Yea, gotta dumb her down for our current America – you know wud I'm sayin'?
This is what you get when artists and writers try to follow the current trends, not be trend setters.
I'm sure this make-over looked GREAT on the profit margin bar charts....
Boo!
I kind of like it. I think the message it sends to young very impressionable girls is a better one too. Less exploited.
I've seen worse..it's not bad at all. She doesn't look like a gyrating ho-bag, and that's something I think the majority is getting really sick of...not bad at all.
Sucks really bad as most upgrades do. If somebody wants to screw with a character, let them be smart enough to come up with one, then screw it up and not a legend
WHY???? TERRIBLE COSTUME!!!!!
This is a terrible Idea of changing the Origin. Why not just create another character.. and do whatever costume you want and a origin of choosing. -this is bad. like movie remakes.. changing a origin to fit a directors ego to want to stand out?.
– well its Wonder Woman. (dont mess with an original).
HOW DARE THEY. I will miss the old version. Linda Carter is probably sick to her stomach. Yuk!!! What's next? An invisible Toyota Prius? DC bring back the old version. PLEEZ!!!
Wonder Woman was around a FAR before Linda Carter even knew who she was.
You obviously have NO clue who Wonder Woman is.
That's horrible, she looks like some kind of gypsy tramp.
What happened to the gold "lasso of truth" she carried? How do you change an icon?
Bad choice of outfit. I "get" the long pants and I like the shirt but the monkey-jacket is stupid and you shouldn't change the bracelets.-The bracelets are important.
ALL STRAIGHT MEN WOULD VOTE 99-1 WONDER WOMEN LOOKS BETTER SHOWING LEGS.....NOT LOOKING LIKE A MAN IN DRAGG.
Being "politically correct" will undermine and, ultimately, undo freedom of expression. R.I. P. Wonder Woman.
I like it...we have enough females running around half naked with big fake double D's making little girls think that is what a woman is supposed to be – this outfit strikes me as the outfit of someone who has respect for herself and doesn't need to bare her ta-tas to the world to be noticed. Wonder Woman was always half naked and it was hard for me to take her seriously. Maybe now I might check it out.
The news isn't the new threads. It's that they brought in a writer of the caliber of J Michael Straczynski.
she looks like she just came outta street fighter.
Macho, macho man. I want to be a macho...
WWWWWW – What Would Wonder Woman Want to Wear?
Terrible makeover...
Good Lord, she looks like the barista who makes my latte every day... A little hungover and disheveled from partying too much the night before. This canNOT be Wonder Woman! We have officially stepped over into a very bad alternate universe.
my sister and i ran around in underoos – wonder woman and supergirl. so how come when they modernized Wonder Woman they forgot to modernize her bust line? is she dating a plastic surgeon?
I am traditional & proud of it. I woke Saturday mornings watching WW, Isis, & Shazam. Why does everyone feel that all super characters have to go dark? That's what the villians are for. Change is not always progress or good.
how many of you queens are really comic book fans? stfu!
I always wondered how she always managed to be caught at the pool when crime struck. Or how a classical community from which she originated from would allow her to go out in her undergarments knowing that men were on the other side of the ocean waiting to drool over her.
Now she looks more like a dectective on a case, not Emo Girls who like wearing fluffy skirts and dark colors. Your thinking of Gothic Women who tend to wear more practical black intimidating clothes.
And if you really think women are going to the club in pants and jackets instead of micro shirts and skirts, your kidding yourselves.
And stop making this political, DC and Marvel are just taking the advice from their PR departments because there are alot more female readers than there used to be and criticism is getting harsher because of how deeply involved comics are in our entertainment sectors.
Meh. Changing the story of her life truly sucks! Her past could have remain the same but Wonder Woman changes over the years because of life changing on Earth just like our life. We change because of technologies, crisis, problems, etc. As for her costume... her red "shirt" looks like Spider-Man!! And her clothes doesn't look very America. I don't mind the change of clothes but keep it "Super Hero"... not like teenager!
What's with hiding her legs?
I LOVE this new look! They do need to give her back her red boots though!
I LOVE THIS NEW LOOK!!!
This is just horrid
why do they have to ruin the classics
Well she looks more manly which I guess what the change was for. Congratulations feminists, you got what you wanted and ruined an iconic comic book character classic. Is there anything in western civilization that feminism hasn't ruined?
this is a truly great makeover.we need a new design and outfit for wonder woman.hater will hate.this is revolution. people who doesn't want to change at all is definitely ignorable.
what the F. An X-Men Rogue Wannabe? The only thing she needs is power absorbing ability.
LOL! Epic fail Mr. Jim Lee. You draw great but you suck at designing!
Personally I like the outfit, all except the pants and boot color. I mean, they could still have kept it new, but with a more retro feel. Like those high waist shorts girls used to wear back then? And the boots need to stay red. Just saying. BUT changing her story WAS A NO-NO!!!
I like an edgier looking Wonder Woman (better looking than what I just saw for the new Emo Superman). She looks hot but can kick your a$$ if you look at her wrong. I have a few problems with the wardrobe, though. Lose the Rogue-looking biker jacket and red handguards (braclets are enough). And bring back the red boots. That would be awesome!
I like her new look. It is a whole lot more sensible than her skimpier outfit that she used to have. It makes more sense to cover up your legs and most your arms if you are going to do a lot of crime fighting. There's nothing wrong with revamping a comic book superhero's look, they do it all the time, Spiderman, Batman, Superman, etc and I'd say Wonder Woman's look was way overdue for an revamp anyway.
I know its kind of late to be making a response to this but here is my opinion anyhow. I think that instead of trying to Change Wonder Woman, which was an incredibly iconic character, so that young women will look up to HER, create a NEW character with a different name and story line that ACTUALLY DOES relate to today's youth. Don't take away what some older women had as girls and give it to the young people. That's a hand-me-down. Be original and create a NEW story.
You people moan and whine about the gaul of daring to change something "classic" when most of you haven't ever bought a comic book or even plan to. If you're not going out to get her book every month, then this should barely register with you just watch your Lynda Carter DVDs and think everything is the way it used to be.
Wonder Woman was getting little respect in her book before this change, and because of it, sales actually increased. Say it was just the shock value or whatnot, the fact remains, she changed, and sales went up, more people took notice of her. This is called a good thing
I absolutely HATE the new look, I LOVED the old look and think if your going to remake a character you should make them look better not WORSE. Ugh this is horrible, seriously it looks like she has on stirrups pants and wedge shoes, that is not freakin modern at all. You should have come up w/a few ideas and let people who actually like her vote, because I now want absolutely nothing to do w/her (w/the exception of stuff that has the old I guess outdated design that looked freakin great)
not bad but still like to see some legs
LOVE LOVE LOVE it!
I kinda like the look, it's more modern. The matching boots, changed background, and W stamp wrist bands they could do without.
The worst idea ever, not because of the change. I like change; I'm pro Obama after all. But this outfit is the worse. She looks more like a villain than a super hero. Somebody fire this guy. PLEASE
Well,Here we go lets change Wonder Womans whole lifetime of how she and her Amazon Sisters trained and can be a great example for young girls and fans alike worldwide! ! I think the time has come for a woman to make some small changes to the costume/ w/some red, white & blue , also A Woman should be drawing her in the first place ! Allison Mack Would BE a good choice to direct a movie of this new age . Remember she needs to be different , a secret idenity a role model and A beacon of hope . Its tough times and classic w/ blending a new century, a slight new look May be just what is needed. Yes, I am disapointed w/the way the picture i saw earler was drawn up, Lack of thought for sure. Jimi.
I am simply pointing out that I dont see a big deal about her style changing. there is no need to be rude and calling anyone a racist. i am not simply pointing out obama and sorry i didnt mean it to be political. was just trying to use an example geez
I'd have to say that i like this new edgier look. It brings potential and no offense intended but she's a fictional character not obama no need to think too much into it
It's like Wonder Woman joining the X-Men. 😀
Okay if we guys, girls, and gay guys agree that the outfit is awful. then I do not see who the heck they are trying to convince? I agree that she needs to get rid of the thrift-store jacket and cheap armor, and get her old red white and blue chest armor back. As for the old wonder woman outfit being a bit revealing for our decade...why not start by going from a skirt and then make your way up from there? I am no fashion designer nor do I want to be one, but this looks better than those pants: http://i45.tinypic.com/27y695.jpg
To me it looks like she is going through mid life crisis with that outfit.
yes she does neat a new more modern and modest costumes but when this guy desigened this coustume i think he looked at his own creeeps of kids for ideas.. wrong move.
It grreat that they got rid of the bustier
but no female superhero kicks but in pants change them to shorts!! and give us back thosse beuiful iconic red boots!!
that jacket makes her look like the very drug dealin criminals she's supossed to be kickin ass
hint ditch the jacket and get shoulder less blu and white stared sleaves. I know that america is lossing patriism but don't let us lose hope
and give the hair at least a little waves and we might acept it
my left nut could draw better than that using windows paint
I like everything except the pants. The best part is the updated wristbands. But the pants have got to go! I liked the boots she used to have. This part was not innovative at all.
I like the costume except for the jacket, it looks nice and modern without the jacket to "toughen her up". Wonder woman is already tougher than your granma dude :S. And the new backstory is retarded. Noone needs an emo background to be tough.
look im 13 and even i think she looks stupid.i've read most of the comics and ill admit ww isnt exatly my fav char. but com keep the top 2 the original add a pair of blue jeans and some converse she'll be good.but the outfit now its just ugly.shes 69 not 14 dress her like an adult not a wannabe teenager
take off the jacket, put her in blue boy shorts with stars and change the boot color back to red.
this look is way wrong for this generation, honestly to me she looks like megan fox meets bella swain goes goth. If you are going to change something at least make it more modern. and honestly why change the storyline when it worked already, if it isnt broken dont fix it.
OMG ! ! ! She looks like my neice when she was in the dark goth and She dressed like Rogue from the X-Men from the '80's and early '90's. I wonder if this look is set in stone or can be changed. I can only hope.
This make over is a NO NO its not Wonder Woman you have destroyed an icon u should be ashamed i wont be renewing my subscription until the real Wonder Woman costume returns.
Freak the world we live in today.
Wonder Woman was hot! Now look at ther
Total crap. I don't mind it that much when they give classic characters makeovers, but at least have a hint of the classic uniform they are popular for. if there is any hint of her old costume in this horrible ensemble she is wearing, I don't see it. She looks terrible IMO. They need to go back to the drawing board on this one.
That sucks! Wonder what Tim Gunn would say?
This is almost as bad as Harley Quinn's new look for the new Batman game. Almost. Not quite. .00001 better than that trash.
As i posted with the new superman look. "I can understand them changing things to keep up with the times," but she looks too tomboyish AND THAT'S COMING FROM A TOMBOY. Wonder Woman's race took pride in their womanhood. either do one of two things, scrap or like one person was mentioning about DC and Marvel changing the looks of their character make subtle changes
Ghastly. Certain to be short-lived - and deservedly so.
She looks freaking goth!! Come on, umm do you want little children to look up to some emo looking person? Bad idea to change it, VERY bad idea!!
ok, I like this new look, but to evryone who's going on about how bad her look is, please stop. DC is trying to sell to a new generation, and they think that includes a makeover.
it will work in one of those alt universes please brin the ols one back with the long hair
I BELIEVE THAT THE THIS NEW GUY IS OUT TO MAKE A NAME FOR HIMSELF ON THE BACK OF A VERY CHERISHED DC COMIC LEGEND. IF IT ISNT BROKE, AND IT ISNT, DONT SCREW WITH IT. THAT IS TOTAL DISRESPECT FOR YET ANOTHER CHERISHED CLASSIC COMIC ICON. HAVE THE EXEC'S AT DC TOTALLY FORGOTTEN WHAT HER OUTFIT REPRESENTED WHEN IT WAS CREATED ? APPARENTLY THEY HAVE. SHE LOOKS MORE 1980'S PAT BENETAR GOUPY THAN SHE DOES AN "AMERICAN ICON" AND ITS A GOOD THING SHE ISNT REAL BECAUSE SERIOUSLY, WITH THAT OUTFIT SHE WOULD BE OUT HUNTING DOWN STRACZYNSKI WHO CREATED THAT CRAPPY COSTUME AND KICKING HIS ASS. AND WE HAVE ALREADY BEEN THROUGH THIS IN THE 90'S WHEN SOMEONE DECIDED TO DO THE SAME BASIC THING TO TWO OTHER CLASSIC COMIC ICONS. AND IT SUCKED THEN TO. LETS RECAPE, CHANGE ISNT ALWAYS A GOOD THING AND THIS IS DEFINITLY ONE OF THEM. TOTALLY DISRESPECTFUL,STUPID, & IT SUCKS PUT IT BACK.
this look sucks!!! you can't change the best woman hero ever's outfit what the hell is wrong with you people?? that's like making her a man this stinks!!
oooohh noooo i dont approve of this ..WE WANT OLD WONDER WOMAN BACK!!!
lame outfit. disappointed in the new direction.
We went through this routine before...
Re-designs of Batman and Superman in the 90's. Cap back in the 80's.
Some new press, renewed interest in the character..then a couple of years go by...and
Wham! Back to the original costume.
In the meantime we are stuck with this crappy costume.
Well, it certainly doesn't look very much like a superhero costume.
I don't think her new outfit looks very iconic
The way I see it is that if you don't read comics (mainly DC and Wonder Woman stuff) and haven't read any of JMS' comic book runs then you have no place in this argument.
Doesn't Matter if you like it or not, things like this don't last so just enjoy the fun and or ridculous story you get out of it.
Maybe someone already brought this up but, I watch Smallville and read Wonder Woman comics. Longtime fan of the character. Has anyone noticed the similarity between the bodice of the new costume and the one worn by Lois Lane on an episode where she and Clark put on costumes and go "under cover" at a Sci-Fi Cconvention? She was suposed to be an "amazon Princess" though the name Wonder Woman was never used, the similarity was obvious. However, Lois' costume was much better in that it was all around period style, with the skirt, boots and all. I'd like to see a side by side comparison. Makes me wonder if the CW is planning a spinoff or a guest appearance by Diana?
I'll say the same thing I've said on all the other blogs: You have got to be kidding?!?! Do the powers at be at DC Comics not remember the story behind her costume? When Wonder Woman was created in 1941 she wore the colors of red, white, blue, and the gold eagle, to show her allegiance to the United States of America as she helped fight the Nazis during World War II. Her costume stood for truth, justice, and the American way. It was supposed to represent the American flag. Now she just looks like she is going to perform in concert with Pat Benetar, circa 1989. Would DC Comics take away Superman’s “S” or Batman’s cape and cowl? I think not and I would hope not. So why change a symbol of American pop-culture and an icon for nearly 70 years? Some things are better left as they are, and Wonder Woman’s costume would be one of those things. Change isn't always a good thing.
I think she needs a change but not this much. keep the pants, get the old boots, and somehow incorparate stars. I have personally not been a fan of the fact that WW has to walk around in a 60's style-type bathing suit while all the men are fully suited and sht. seriously, how many of the people who dislike the look even READ DC comics? they just ike whining, is all. men will whine too, of course, because she shows less kin. suprise suprise..people don't ear there shorts over there belly buttons now. I do like the old top look of WW though and the headband:
http://365flyfish.files.wordpress.com/2009/12/wonder-woman-history.jpg
DC comics tried to change her back in the 70s to make her more 'feminist', but they have to quickly change her back after those same feminist they were trying to impress actively complained about the change. I doubt this will last too. Not because of feminist, but just because people don't like comic book change.
http://www.facebook.com/#!/group.php?gid=135615073124123&ref=ts
And since when is Abby Sciuto a bad character? Love her...love the new look on WW...it rocks!
I don't think wonderwoman looks at all like Abby Scutto from NCIS. But perhaps a bit like a goth Megan Fox or a super goth Karen O. (from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs)
Megan Fox is the natural pick to play WW in the next movie. But I'd tend to hire an actress, not a model.
this could not be a more idiotic discrace from writers who have no clue and orchestrators who see the almighty dollar. it should be against the law and is criminal. squash this like a bug!
I honestly thought she was an all new character all together on first glance. How can she "fight crime" in a jacket? Especially in one such as this? It would be too constricting of the shoulders. If this was her "street" clothes, I would find it acceptable. But as for it being "fighting" clothes, no way. Plus don't women dress with very little modesty anyway in this day and age?
This is edgier? It looks like she's going out for a beer at the roughneck pub on the corner, not off fighting the "bad" guys.
AWEFUL
stupid stupid stupid. what criminal in their right mind is going to fear this updated version of a classic Icon. might as well have dressed her up in an amish costume!! she looks boring tired and like she stepped out of a punk club in the 80's. its no wonder the comic book industry is gone to crap. get rid of the moron who made this change.!!!!!
This is painful to look at! She looks like white trash, with bluejean stir ups, blue jean jacket, and those shoes are soooooooooooo ugly! What is DC Comics thinking??? This will never sell. I hate this look. At least make her look classy...this is too trashy
Now it's time to change Superman's outfit. I mean the guy wears his underpants on the outside of his tights. Eeewww! Glad I don't do his laundry. *lol*
Oh look, another reimagining...how stupid!
Well, I guess Wonder Woman has officially been killed off then. Pity. Women superheroes should be encouraged, not eclipsed. Because It's okay to SUBTLEY change a classic superhero's costume, but not RADICALLY change it. Just sticking with DC superheroes (cause WW is DC), take a look at Superman and Batman... if their costumes were radically changed, they wouldn't BE Superman and Batman any longer. I think the problem is these new guys didn't create the characters, so they don't respect the characters. This "new" WW is really a new character, so call it by a new name, don't insult a classic superhero just because she's a woman and considered easy prey. If Wonder Woman was real you can bet she'd scout out Mr.Jim Lee and Mr.J. Michael Straczynski and kick the crap out of them for disrespecting her!
I'm wondering what Wonder Woman's fans did to made DC want to punish her like this....
I just threw up in my mouth....
SUCKS !!!!!!
while you're at it, why don't you make her wear overalls and workboots
what a dumb idea
I don't care about the costume, but changing her backstory is wrong.
I like the look its darker, and modern. Darker is in, just look at the popularity, and the success of Batman, I guess they are trying to take her in that direction.
Simply put, I HATE IT!! As others have stated, Wonder Woman is an Icon. How do take an iconic Superhero and turn her to, at best, a side kick? The only reasonable rationale I can come up with is that some Hollywood writer/producer/director is wanting to do a movie and they needed a reboot. I'm guessing, and likely true, that they were unable to find anyone to measure up to the ideal standard set by Lynda Carter. So in a way this appears to be an acknowledgement of that failure, and a sorry attempt to reboot by extremely lowering the bar in order that some modern starlet can fill in the newly created space and not feel completely overwhelmed by the comparisons that would have come with putting on the old outfit. Why didnt they just create an alternate storyline like was done with the recent Star Trek, and that way preserve the previous, and obviously better, incarnation of this character.
LOL she looks like Charisma Carpenter from Buffy The Vampire Slayer.
I am surprised that they did not go with this "modernized" version of the Wonder Woman suit: http://www.celebrity-pictures.ca/viewpicture/?id=113937
THEY WILL HAVE TO PAY ME TO LOOK AT THIS MESS!
This look would have been perfect in the mid 90s but this is 2010 and I am not impressed. The spandex pants are seriously giving me early 90s flashbacks unless they are supposed to be skinny jeans, lol
Wow. The new costume is awful. The old costume is iconic and simple. This one is not memorible at all. What were they thinking at DC? What was Lee thinking? And they took away the red, white, and blue theme, too. I wonder why.
Absolutely NOT! I hate the new costume 🙁 – if they wanted a new costume for her how about this one 😀 http://cghub.com/files/Image/33784/large_image.jpg
What have they done to her?
Why, exactly, does she have to look like a malnourished waif in bad nightclub clothes?
I happen to have a 4-year-old Wonder Woman fanatic little girl roaming around my house. So I showed her the new costume. Her answer? "I don't like it. It's not pretty. It needs to have more stars on it, and she should be red, WHITE, and blue, not black!"
Out of the mouths of babes, DC.
Well she wasn't "full-figured," but there was a black Wonder Woman in, I think, the 1970s. She was named Nubia, I believe. She was Diana's sister, created out of clay molded by their mother, just like Diana. I can't recall if she was kidnapped or why she was not raised with Diana and Diana never knew about her until they were adults.
Here's the thing...I love Abby from NCIS, but never in a gazillion years should she and Wonder Woman be mistaken for one another. Who cares if she has worn the same outfit for so many years? Really...this is awful. Leave the background and write better story lines. Why mess with a good thing? I agree with the New Coke analogy. Get a clue. Please leave WW alone. Maybe they could have Abby go as the new WW for Halloween this season!!!!!!!!!!!!
'lynda carter' is the best 'wonder woman', why change her characters image?, what's next ? ... stupid 'baggy ass pants' with the rear pockets hangin' below her knees .. and some 'boxers' showin' at her beltline ???.
the 'new' wonder woman sucks !, how could DC comics even conceive of changing the true success & image of an icon ?, you dont change the personality of a legend 'falsesly' just to 'keep up with the times' !.
Whoever's bright idea this was needs to get fired. If you want to create your own superhero then do that, but why mess with a proven formula?
oh, i have another thought, in the case of their wonder woman 'update', DC comics may stand for '(D)on't (C)hange" wonder woman !!!
changing wonder woman ... bad idea !, it disrespects what the 'original' is about. the 'new' look of wonder woman .. (if i may qoute 'archie bunker') .. is "crappola" !!!
Dark and edgy look aside, it is a relief to see a female superhero whose costume goes beyond spike heels body paint.
why do wonder woman 'innovators' have to sometimes mess with an 'original'... like when a while back.. 'coke a cola' changed their formula. leave those 'classics' alone !!!.
I do not like the look at all. WW came from amazonia, and she should look the part. The Lynda Carter WW was great, and Justice League and Justice League Unlimited, although cartoon noir, as with BTS, keep truer to the orginal Charaters. Those programs were not for kids in anyway shape or form. Why not use the costume form JL or JLU? Updated, but still classic. She looks like a emo more than a Superhero.
you've got to be kidding !, ... why ruin wonder womans original image, dont turn an 'icon' into something she's not !!!.
As a person who likes change and is all about keeping things fresh the idea for the update is ok. But from what I have seen so far I HATE IT!!!! Bring back our Wonder Woman...PLEASE!!!!
If not glad I have my memories......
DOON DOON DOON DOON WONDER WOMAN, ALL THE WORLD IS FIGHTING FOR YOU, AND THE POWER YOU POSSESSE!!!!!!!!
NOT TO WORRY, I VE CONTACTED THE SUPERFRIENDS AT THE HALL OF JUSTICE AND THEY ARE MORE THAN WILLING TO HELP. WONDER TWIN POWER ACTIVATE, FORM OF AN ERASER, WONDER TWIN POWER ACTIVATE, FORM OF A PEN. GREAT WONDER WORK WONDER TWINS ERASE THIS MESS AND DRAW BACK THE ORIGINAL!!!!
Ugh!
As a huge Wonder Woman fan, I am disgusted by this new look. Wonder Woman is a classic and should not be changed to such a dark look. And to change the origins of her? Stupid.
ERICA i SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO AGREE!!!!!!
I THINK WONDER GIRL IS BEHIND THIS!! SHE ALWAYS WANTED TO BE WONDER WOMAN. WELL SHE IS NOT GONNA GET AWAY WITH IT. HER MAJESTY HAS BEEN NOTIFIED AND SHE HAS BEEN SUMMONED BACK TO PARADISE ISLAND IMMEDIATELY
OH C'MON CNN!!! you refuse to post my comment?!! i'll do a Superhero Trivia contest with you anyday... basically the loser image wannabe toon artists wanna screw with everything we know and love... Loser liefeld screwed up Captain America... Loser larson screwed up Thor... Loser Lee screwed up both Batman AND Spawn (in the same book) when the two publishers cut him loose with them... Stan Lee doesn't care anymore... or was it my gay lee comment...?
SINCE WHEN DID THE MARTICA ADDAMS LOOK BECOME THE NEW WONDER WOMAN LOOK. COME ON GUYS WONDER WOMAN IS SUPPOSED TO EMBODY TRUTH, JUSTICE AND THE AMERICAN WAY, NOT DEATH, DESTRUCTION AND DISMAY. SHE IS A SUPERHERO DAMMIT!!!!
Morticia (like mortician combined with marcia, pronounced as marsha).
A-men Robb! This look is too trashy, not even classy...she looks like she is gonna light up a joint any minute and smoke out! lol
And for crying out loud, the costume that everyone thinks of as Wonder Woman's "original" was not – she wore a skirt!!!
PLEASE DIANA PRINCE SAVE US, CALL MAJ TREVOR!!!!!! THERE ARE PLOTTING TO DESTROY WONDER WOMAN AND PARADISE ISLAND
As a kid who actually watched the origanal series in the 70s with the one and only Lynda Carter, this is HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!! Im all for change, but you missed the mark totally. I took a poll in my office of 20 30 40 50 something coworkers and we all HATED IT!! MS CARTER LIVES IN THE DC METRO AREA AS DO I. I WONDER GET IT WONDER WHAT SHE WOULD HAVE TO SAY ABOUT IT!!!
Awesome look. What's the fun in not re-imagining the imagined? Someone said it reminds of Marvel character Rogue. Good point. More so, it reminds me of the Wonder Woman from the Justice League animated episode with the Justice Lords.
NO NO NO . Wonder Woman any other way is not right. The W on the bracelets, I think is cool but nothing else should change. Now............maybe as Wonder Girl.
Bad idea. You just can't improve on hot pants and a bustier. I think it's a Newtonian law of the universe or something...
You could have done better than this. You've taken the Wonder out. Now it's Adequate Woman. "In your blackened tights, fighting for your rights, in the old red, gold and black!!! Get us out from under Adequate Woman!!!!" Sh'e too goth and seems to have little femininity.
LAME.
but it's typical of today's writers. instead of meeting the challenge of writing something original to bring life into established characters that have been loved for years; just rewrite history so it is easier on your A.D.D. pea brain.
let's ditch Superman's cape too, and put him in some jeans that hang off his ass, and a baseball hat turned sideways.
pathetic
JMS is famous for reading feedback on his work, give it time he might rework it.
thanks now i dont have to buy ww anymore u guys arent to bright ruining something good is worked for 69 years r u stupid or what .
Who is she? She looks more like a SPIDER Woman – not Wonder Woman. She looks more like the villan. This is the worst super hero makeover yet. Go back to the drawing board because it is apparent most of us hate the new look. As for merchandising, no one is going to buy that outfit to wear on Halloween – it's just U-G-L-Y! WW is patriotic- where did the red, white & blue go? Those colors are always in style. When the hero shows up in red, white & blue you know everything's going to be ok – well, that's what it used to mean.
Why not create a brand new female super hero who looks like this? You can give her any back story you want. Biker jacket – seriously?
Can't stand the outfit. Bad wardrobe update. Doesn't look anything like the previous WonderWoman. This character should get her own name because she's definitely not WonderWoman.
Wonder Woman looks tackier than a Housewife of New Jersey.
Bad idea, bad remake. This outfit is much worse than the original which was, back then, of doubtful taste.
Dear JMS,
Go find another book to ruin. I want GAIL SIMONE back now! I've been reading this book since I was a pre-teen and her costume never bothered me. The costume bothered people with petty issues and bones to pick and gripes about their stupid views on feminism. No one talks about Supermans SPEEDO over blue tights. No one cracks on Batman and the fact that, yes, he is dressed like a giant bat! Instead, re-design her outfit so it looks like the foolish crap a Kardashian sister would wear to the gym.
Thanks for NOTHING.
-Tina
Lame... no talent. Sorry, but you dont always have to change something. What next Superman with a new S. Basically, you just destroyed the character.
How come Superman doesn't get a costume makeover?
He did a few years ago – he became electrical and had a blue-and-white costume with no cape.
Sounds lame, but it was makeover.
How come Superman does get a costume makeover?
I liked new Wonder Woman better when she was Al Bundy's wife in Married with Children.
Get rid of the jacket, bring back the big hair, and keep the rest of the changes.
Bleeech. What next, Superman in jams and a Calvin Klein T-shirt?
She just looks so ordinary.
suuuuuuuuuuuuuuh- UUUUHKS
Awful outfit and concept. Wonder Woman is a Super Hero – This dumbed down outfit does not equate.
She needed an update but I don't think this one really works
Looks like a desperate act. What demographic is this for anyway?
Jim Lee must be getting old with this wonder woman remake..where are her curves? When he was drawing the x-men, the females looked like godesses, and very amazonian. This new incarnation of wonder woman looks like a high school junior. Not cool.
I understand changing, or updating, but this is a terrible design. Good thing it wont last long.
Let's change Batman's origin so he's not from a family who was murdered in a back alley mugging. And why does Superman have to be from Krypton anymore? Just change everything we've always known about the most important characters in comic books...
As far as the look, changing the look of a major character isn't necessarily an awful thing to do, but you better make it good, like Spiderman's black costume. "Updating" classic comic book characters usually leaves them looking bland and much less interesting than they did before. Perhaps this new look is needed before they will make a Wonder Woman movie. I HATED how the X-men didn't have any of their real costumes in the X-men movies because they didn't think it would look "modern" enough. They were created in the 60's!!! Let them be what they are supposed to be! Make some minor adjustments and then just ... let it be...
I like the fact that she's covered up more, but I don't like the overall design much. I agree she is overdue for an update, but maybe they should rethink this particular one.
You also probably think ladies beach wear from the 1920s was hot. Your outlook of comic costumes is duly noted as FAIL.
I think the new look is awesome! Illustrators should change the look of heroes every once in a while, and they have the right too. Heroes in Marvel have been changed around an insane amount of times and I think it is about time someone gave Wonder Woman a new look. Very good job!
Opinions are like a**holes, everyone has one and most of them stink; just like this costume.
Put Lynda Carter in the outfit, and I'll let you know what I think about it!
I like it a lot.
it is a very great outfit.
all I see in the comments is BAAAAAWWWWWWWWWWWWW
take off your goggles you bunch of f@ggots
Hey coolface! From one f@ggot to another.
"Superman's cosume still looks the same.
Batman's costume still looks the same.
Spiderman's costume still looks the same.
Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeessssssssssssseeeeeeeeeeeeeeee leave Wonder Women's costume alone.
Thank you!"
Sorry, but this is not a superhero costume; this is outdated streetwear, and nothing about it says "iconic character." I'm all for updating Wonder Woman's look, but completely trashing 60 years of tradition is not the way to do it; this makes about as much sense to me as Batman donning a set of Freddie Mercury suspenders or putting Superman in a floor-length fur coat. By all means, update WW's costume, but make sure people still recognize her as WW when you're done; the best updates are small, logical ones that don't drastically change what the character represents.
As for the revamped origin story...blech; a ripoff mashup of Batman (murdered parents) and Superman (spirited away to escape the destruction of her home) is the best they could come up with?
It really doesnt matter what they do. All of the charactors are ruined with no history to them anymore. The artists, for themost part are crap, going for manga. The writers are horrible and have no sense of tradition. Oh wait. Sounds like todays youth. Nevermind. Ill leave you with a tip. Make up your own ideas and screw them up. Leave the others work alone.
She looks like she stepped out of a Mexican Gang on Chicago's streets. 😛
I kinda like the outfit as maybe a second for her.. but I LOVE the Original WW.. I am 33 and I dressed up as her for halloween this year!
Did anyone feel it neccisary to cahnge Superman's outfit? or batman? NO.. they just added to it.. Where is Stan Lee? Can't he stop this? You CAN"T change her background story.. that is just creating a new character.. if you want to have her get one of her sisters in this fashion and call her another wonder woman.. like Barbie and Skipper? But dont change what we all know and love..
Sorry Tiff but Stan the Man has absolutely no influence at DC. You might say he is the anti-DC. Come the think of it Stan really has no influence at Marvel either and hasn't for years.
i wonder how many folks read comic books.. i say less than a quarter of the people posting have read comics in the last couple of years. Do not be shock if things happened to your iconic comic book characters because the character must evole.
PS BATMAN is not Bruce Wayne, Bruce Wayne is lost in time and.... BATMAN right now is Dick Greyson and Robin is the Damian Wayne the son of Bruce Wayne
THIS IS JUST PIAIN STUPID.
DC must have tossed out their manual on Iconic Branding 101. How stupid. You have a fantastic brand like Wonder Woman, and you mess with it?
NOT!
NOT! That's like changing Nancy Drew's little blue roadster. They can DEFINITELY kiss the gay-lesbia-retro-camp market good-bye!
Don't fix it if it ain't broke. keep the classic, thats what it was before thats what it should be now. Megan Fox needs to play her in the remake movie...
She looks like she hates men, thinks she's fat and cuts herself, not a superhero. In the words of In Living Colors Men on Film-HAAAATED IT!
NO!
I don't like the approach. Keep the past, but the costume DID need a change. This was just the wrong type of change.
She was supposed to be a Roman/Greek based character. I think they should have used that as inspiration for her new costume, not this.
She looks like Rogue and Iron Man Offspring....
Well...I think WW will always be remembered for that outfit of hers, but I rather like the new costume.
Granted, it's not as flashy as the old costume, but I think it's nicer. It's a lot more modest and looks closer to what a modern, average woman would wear. I think it shows a little more respect for women: no matter what job we have, we girls are NOT eye candy – we're women, and we deserve the same respect and consideration that men get.
So, those are my two cents, so...DON'T HURT ME!!!!!!! *Ducks and runs for cover.*
Ha! Well, there's nothing wrong with what you said. I would just contest that WW is not exactly SUPPOSE to be "modest." She's suppose to be a symbol of female power, and "modest" is a sort of male way of wanting her to be.
So you'd rather have seen Chris Reeves or Brandon Routhe without the muscle building training regimen, a pot belly, and flying in a pair of khaki pants and a polo? Sure you would have ladies. Because that would have been more practical and "respectful". Moron!
As a female comic book fan I did occasionally have scruples with skimpy costumes that favored fan service over practicality, but my ire was mostly targeted towards characters like Witchblade and Vampirella, whose nips could slip at any moment.
I've played roller derby for 5 years now, and we often come under fire for dressing in shiny underpants and flashy hosiery because it's seen as anti-feminist and promoting exhibitionism over athleticism. In truth, the spandex outfits are comfortable and allow freedom of movement while protecting us against rink rash. I think the Wonder Woman costume is both empowering and more practical than people think. Some rollergirls even emulate WW's style while they're tearing it up around the track. Skinny jeans, by comparison, are actually a lot harder to move around in!
HELL NO!!!! I loved Linda in her old outfit! What's wrong with you people????
The only upside to this outfit is that my ass cheeks will no longer freeze on cold Hallowe'en nights.
I just hate the shoes!
Here's an idea- instead of re-vamping an old character, how about coming up with a NEW ONE?
They act like this is something new. It isn't. When the Justice League aired on Cartoon Network they did an episode where WW had an all red outfit that was pants. They were the Justice Lords in that episode.
Also in the graphic comic book Trinity, she wears pants a lot when not kicking butt. She'll be back to the traditional in no time.
Looks HORRIBLE , I hate it, she doesn't even look like Wonder Woman anymore , the outfit looks exactly like something a twelve year old girl would wear, and even outdated by those standards.
How did this turn to politics. This is about a freakin comic character. How inane is it to argue about something that has nothing to do with the subject. You can always tell when it's summer they let the kids out and they get on the computer and act like the Infantiles they are.
I hear Captain America is going to start wearing levi's and Superman is gonna were dockers.
I actually like the outfit, it's like something I'd wear if i were gonna go out and kick some butt, haha. As a chick, i definitely identify more with this version than the one in the bustier and skirt.
I agree with the group. That costume looks lame and just doesn't accentuate her beauty in any way.
I think they should should have just updated the old wonder womans outfit not completely change it. I loved her as a kid because she was a woman with a cape like batman, now she looks like she is about to go to a party fo rvampires or something. This was not a good idea, sorry 🙁
This is wrong on so many levels. Now her origin is not significantly different from Superman's. The costume is a joke. At least the old one had a decent historical origin–especially the bracelets and the lasso. Sounds like a de-powering is in the offing as well. This is not how you treat the second most iconic and powerful character in the DC Universe. I think this will be the end for me with the character. Fortunately I have all of the post-Crisis George Perez issues so I can check out her proper origin story anytime I like.
FAIL, and extra FAIL for stealing from The Phantom. Straczynski should know better.
Obama is ruining the gulf coast....really IMPEACH... I'm glad to see that illiterate people still believe that they have a point. Remember your girl Bush, he did an awesome job during Katrina...oh and good job on that protecting us from terrorists thing, while the Obama camp actually locates these guys before they blow themselves up, Bush kind of let 12 of them board palnes and well we know the outcome of that. But its true that a guy who ran a few companies into the ground would be a great CEO of America. It stands to reason that god would be on his side and we would all be ok...lets see what happened...War, Poverty, joblesness, devaued currency and a world economic disater...4 more years...4 more years...I'm not saying Obama is great, I'm a republican but seriously, read the NY times, the wall street journal and dont add to the South Park crew of "they took our jobs" nonsense...Oh and Obamacare doesnt actually get implemented until 2013 but nice point there too.
DC tried the same thing in 1970s. It didn't last–everyone wanted the "real thing" back, so they went back to the tried and true. If DC wants a great costume change for WW, they should go back and look at Alex Ross' rendering of her in "Kingdom Come."
At first glance it looked like she was wearing a strap-on!!
Why do they keep redoing comic heroes? If you are trying to reach a younger audience why don't you keep the original origins and maybe, I said maybe, update the costumes. All of this change is why I dislike the comic book themed movies, the plots intermingle so many of the pulp stories that it makes me want to cry!
Why can't some things just remain as they were? Is tradition a thing of the past? Sometimes its just plain nice to see something that you have watched your whole life as it is. There is no reason to change WW to bring her into the 21st century....good god shes a comic charactor, and looked great just the way she was.
All she needs now is a fanny pack and a PBR... Maybe characters do need to be updated every now and then, but she is a classic superhero. I don't want to watch Wonder Woman fighting crime in hipsteresque civvies. I liked the update in Kingdom Come... Instead of pressing the "reset" button, Ross and Waid made her older, more severe, and gave her a sweet suit of Amazon armor to help her wage war against the new generation of super-powered upstarts.
What makes me shake my head is creative teams that are out of touch with the youth market and grasping desperately at straws trying to get kids to buy books. The answer isn't to zap classic characters back to pubescent states. Wolverine and Batman are wildly popular and they've never been sent back to high school. They're badasses that are well-written characters, so kids like them. End of story. She doesn't need a reset or a makeover- Write me a riveting Wonder Woman book and I'll read it.
W-T-F DC is crazy and so is Straczynski, between Superman VERY VERY poorly written "walkabout" and this I do believe my respect for DC Comics has hit rock bottom for me...it's a pity.
she looks like Abby Scuito NCIS! Definitely how funny.
Wonder Woman has actually had several makeovers in just the last 30 years:
http://www.bigshinyrobot.com/reviews/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/wonderwoman.jpg
What's next, Emo Superman?
Michelle Obama would make a very ugly woman
Whats next? Batman & robin come out as a gay couple? Oh how I long for the glory days of comics and not the new politically correct sensitive comics. Political correctness has ruined comics like it has ruined most everything else.
I'm with you! There was nothing wrong with the old look! She was the hottest lady in action comic books or anyother comic but now Daisy Duck is hotter! Now we know what this guy thinks looks hot! "Holy Hot Kats Batman, WW looks like she just fell out of the OutHouse behind the Cathouse behind the White House!" over heard by Robin in GC at Books A MIllion on Broadway at 8:00 am this morning.
HORRENDOUS! She had this stupid outfit in the 90's
Worst costume, ever!
That outfit looks terrifically HORRIBLE. A choker...are you serious...Wonder Woman now wears a choker...? Wow.
Funny how they won't make as drastic a change to Superman's costume. He has been around longer than Wonder Woman...doesn't he need to be updated too. EPIC FAIL !!!!
How did a discussion about Wonder Woman's new outfit turn into an Obama bashing session?
Wow, why not just dress her in business casual? Talk about boring.
Booooo!! I never thought I would say this, but Jim Lee doesn't know what he's doing! Dude, what the heck are you guys thining over there? "Oh, hey this outfit has worked for 70 years - here's a brainstorm - let's change if and make it forgettable!" C'mon gang, theres a reason people want their heroes a certain way. We want our Hulk Green, our Superman to be super and wonder woman to dress like a tasteful male swimsuit fantasy from the 50's with a gold rope to tie up dudes (and occasioanlly herself and other females!). What's next, Green Lantern's gonna be orange?
Jim, please spend your time making the legends better. This is a disaster and you know it. Think back to when you fell in love with comic books. Did a short-haired girl in a bogus leather jacket with the sleeves rolled up get you excited about Wonder Woman? You know the answer. Please, Jim, hollywood and the whole world is watching. In the vast, infinite universe of possibilities, this was the best you guys came up with. You want HOW MUCH for a comic book now? Sad...
She is looking like some cross between Spidermand and Venom! Yikes...
Daisy
Cool. I dig the new look. Her new costume is more dignified than the old look, not to mention alot more practical. She's not there to look pretty, she's there to inflict a Chuck Norris sized beatdown in the name of justice.
Glad I am not the only one who thinks so!
Doesn't look that bad. Lose the jacket though Wonder Woman PLEASE.
Lord, he may as well have put Superman in yellow parachute pants and the Green Lantern in a tutu! HORRIBLE idea to so drastically alter a beloved and iconic heroine in such a fashion that she no longer resembles herself at all. BOO!
If DC wants an 'edgy' WW then they should work on creating a next gen version rather than changing WW herself. I am all for subtle tweaks to modernize a character but this is an aberration.
LOL. Couldn't agree with you more.
MMMMM, Wonder Woman. Ahh, I can still remember Linda Carter dressed as WW. I wonder where I put my WW poster?
You know...she looks like a pole dancer and changing her origin is like saying Superman is from Pluto!! This is just terrible...Simply terrible...
i really don't mind the costume, but it looks more like everyday street wear and costumes are supposed to be just that....costumes! i don't mind the revamping of the character, being a long time comic book reader/junkie, i understand the need to change backstories to add new dimensions and depth to a character. i also understand costume changes. most of the great comic book heroes have gone through at least one modernization of their style. but i think that there could have been a better costume design. modern doesn't have to mean boring. she's one of the greatest superheroes ever! treat her like it! 🙂
Baaaaaad. Leave the characters alone.
I don't like it 🙁 I miss her red boots and voluptuousness – what's wrong with "large" breasts anyway?! She doesn't even look like a woman anymore, let alone a Wonder Woman. I read her comics and am used to a bit of "play" as far as storyline goes, but I'm not a fan of the new direction. Blech.
As a lifelong fan of Wonder Woman I don't like this makeover. I don't have a problem with her getting one, but this is not a good look for such an iconic character. Thumbs all the way down.
Not a big fan of WW, never ws growing up, but the new outfit, looks RIDICULOUS.
she now has claws, just like real women
I believe the best reply to this comes way back from the days of Image Comics start-up – which involved Jim Lee
"Just Add Water"
There is nothing new, interesting nor edgy about this. Except for the dark hair, this version of WW could be Rogue from the Jim Lee days of X-Men. Wonder Woman is supposed to be different and classic (ala Greek Legend). The idea of her dealing with killing someone on a recent story arc was inventive – this? Its just tired.
As a women who grew up loving this character, I do not relate anymore or see anyone younger than me relating to this.
What would a girl from suburbia wanted to see?
-Clean looking makeup, not goth....that was trendy in the 90s
-longer hair, this medium length looks ordinary, not super-hero-ish
-double bs or Cs....after all she works out...less chance of having fat on the top, you know what I mean?
-get rid of the jeggings they look ordinary
when I see this....the only reason I think of the word "wonder" is "I WONDER why they didn't have a girl draw this, or at least let her have imput.
Why is the entire comments section a bunch of whining from people who have never even read her comics anyway?
Don't like it! Doesn't even look like Wonder Woman! People need to buycott this to stop things like this from happening! The fan isn't even considered!
I'm more bothered by the origin re-write. I understand tweaking looks, origins, etc but WW was fundamentally an ambasador from a (very) foreign land. Making her an orphan in a genre filled with orphans removes an interesting and distinctive quality from her.
Hmmm....
Mixed feelings about this one:
1) She needs a slight change in her appearance, but
2) This ain't it. She looks like a 17-year-old.
I definitely do NOT like the new look. She looks more like "GOTHIC Woman" than Wonder Woman!!
She looks like a cheap tramp--only a man would turn Wonder Woman into a tramp. Women would only have enhanced her heroic strengths, not her boobs.
Red: so, you were a fan of the booty shorts and bustier? Interesting. They gave her pants and a jacket. Big deal.
She's 69? That explains the saggy boobs.
It's time to retire the "legacy" characters from comic books. Wonder Woman, Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, Iron Man, Captain America, etc. The whole lot of them need to be gone and the comments on this article are a perfect example of why. If you updated the stories and designs to try to hook modern readers, the nostalgia crowd revolts. If you keep going with the massive continuity backlogs and classic designs, the casual fans aren't interested. It is a lose/lose situation for the publishers. No matter what they do, they're alienating a market. Marvel and DC need new characters, stories, and genres. This dancing around trying to mesh decades old continuities and designs with modern designs and stories just results in consistently lackluster products.
You sir are an idiot who needs to read one of the many books written on the history of comics and why these classic, not "legacy" as you put it, characters continue to resonate with new generations of readers. They're personalities are archetypes and thier costumes add to thier instant recognizability.
I don't see many girlfriends dressing up in this for a "wonder Woman" fantasy.....
Reminds me of the crappy late 60's/early 70's women's liberation with white bell bottoms "update" which ended in utter failure and near cancellation.
LOOKS LIKE MICHAEL JACKSON! I LIKE THE OLD ONE BETTER!
Look, I get that costumes change (any era of X-Men, Iron Man updates and specialty armors, new Captain America, etc.) or other shifts to gain attention and readership (Superman's power change in the 90s, supposed death of Batman). It's part of telling stories.
But the timing alone is terrible, with possible casting for a Wonder Woman movie (which will DEMAND that she be in the classic costume). DC tried this back in the 60s/70s, depowering her and placing her in normal clothing. If Gloria Steinem herself thought the classic costume wasn't objectifying women...well, DC got the message and brought her back to her rightful status.
As for the new origin (known in the business as a "retcon")....why? Usually the storyline offers an explaination for the retcon and how it happens ("Crisis" alters the timeline, reality restoration with subtle changes, etc.). Readers don't like it when something is fundamentally changed with the sole explaination of "the writer thought it'd be cool." I've said it before and I'll say it again, it's like drawing a gun-toting ninja and trying to pass it off as Thor. Not having read this issue (yet), I'll reserve judgement on this new origin.
The issue with this costume I have is that makes her look like other more generic superheros. Her old costume may have been ridiculous but it was unique.
Her clothes sucks!! I grew up watching Wonderwoman, but this makeover is just outrageously not like her!!!!!!!!!
Needs some machine gun jubblees too.
Im a chick and I dislike the new look....
The outfit needs improvement...however the story can not be changed otherwise it is not Wonder Woman. It is another character.
Grown geeks should not be designing fashion for anyone, much less women, a subject that is sooo foreign to them.
This is a significant downgrade.
WWWWWWWWWWHAAAAAT
So they stole an outfit from Rogue and the whole "punch and leave an imprint" concept from the Phantom.
Wow... I haven't seen anything this lame in quite a while. Utterly unoriginal and derivative.
Compared to the original, her appearence is aesthetically unpleasing and lacks femininity.
Wonder Woman is an iconic figure- changing her in such a dramatic fashion is ill-advised.
What next? Superman with a new "hip-hop" make-over? Possibly Cyclops done up as a goth? (how ever would he get the eyeliner on?)
Ladies and Gentlemen, allow me to introduce you to the concept of a "Very Bad Idea".
Craptastic!
Glad to see her in an outfit that doesn't have the potential for flashing her enemies while fighting them (although I'm sure all the guys will beg to differ that is a bonus for them). I never did understand why a woman must be scantily clad to fight. This new outfit is MUCH more practical for battle.
Right...because when I'm reading a fantasy story about incredibly athletic people with super human abilities the first thing I think about is how practical it all is. (rolls eyes to the point of pain)
So, does she now ride the invisible "Harley"....
I like the idea of changing her outfit, but they didn't do a very good job. That's ugly, terrible fashion
Boycott this woman, Nothing to wonder about..
Change is good, but not with an icon like WW....The two big boys Super and Bats are having major milestone issues coming up. Wonder Woman was at issue 45 until all the fans protested that if you counted her issues from the beginning instead of all the breaks, remakes etc. she too would be up there wit the big boys at 600....but no they couldn't leave it at that. The couldn't listen to the fans...the had to make changes. I don't see any changes in the Supes or Bats costumes? Get it through your fat heads Didio and company...if the fans love her so much that they demanded a recount of her issues it was because they love her, Wonder Woman, not a new Jim Lee version. I do think some of the details could be updated (Iv'e noticed that Batman's belt and spikey gloves have been updated). The WW logo on the bracelets which would leave a mark on her villain's face is cool. Or have alternative costumes like Batman has when faced with Mr. Frost, or water-based villians
Actually, Superman and Batman's costumes are different from how they first appeared in the 30s, but evolved into what they are today (remember Batman's yellow oval?). The Hulk's first appearance had him colored gray, not green. Wonder Woman's first appearance had her in a skirt, not swimsuit briefs and more sandal-like boots. This new outfit isn't an evolution; it's a radical change, and they don't often go over well.
Will Olivia Munn still wear the original outfit?? =]
Michelle Obama would make an ugly ANYTHING.
Hmmm...this outfit feels like Wonder Woman when she isn't feeling so wonderful.
Three words: Megan Fox, baby!
I guess jim lee ran out of ideas in 1991..... He better be ready for some major fan boy/girl rage at the san diego comic con. If he shows up
Wow, it looks shockingly similar to the outfit she wore for about a year in the early 1990's. . . except back then instead of black pants it was black shorts (tasteful shorts, too, not Daisy Dukes).
My predition: This will last a year. If.
The clothes aren't bad, what I don't like is "her" look... she looks weaker somehow.
They can dress her in any outfit they want: I will still do her. 😛
Great, no Wonder Woman loooks like Appolonia found herself a pair of biker boots, and is going riding with Prince down by ole man Johnson's farm. (80s reference, kids)
It's... a comic-book character. I feel dumber for even reading the article, and to see you people go on about it as if it's important in the least. Hey, here's an idea. Get off the computer and go teach your kids something important and useful.
In the words of William Shatner...Get a life!
Says the guy who quotes shatner.
You'd be amazed at how many comic book fans live successful and fulfilling lives. It's hardly a 'live in my mom's basement and allegic to excercise' thing anymore. Heck, even Robert Downey Jr. reads comics.
Bradyley, honey, there IS nothing more important than Lynda Carter/Wonder Woman. Now get to spinning!
If you don't like the forum.....get off!!! Yes there are more important things in the world that are occurring. However, sometimes people like to take a temporary reprieve from all the doom and gloom. Nothing wrong with a meaningless debate to break up the doldrums. Here is an idea for you .....try not to take everything so seriously. Maybe you will actually enjoy life more.
You should feel dumber for even thinking of commenting.
Wonder Woman?? Uh no! I dont know who that is?????
Love you Jim Lee. But this looks lame.
They left a very important part out of the story. DC will change the costume in issue #600. THIS WILL ALSO BE THE FINAL ISSUE BASED ON EVERYONE HATING THIS STUPID IDEA.
Dudes – you tried a "mod" Wonder Woman in the 60s and it didn't play. This will not play as well. If this is all you got, quit while you're ahead instead of messing with a classic.
What next, Wonder Woman blue and Wonder Woman read both with electricity powers or maybe a Wonder Woman that is move sadistic and wears a battle suit with big claws.
Agree a makeover was needed. A makeover is still needed ...
Total. Freakin'. Fail.
LEAVE MY WONDER WOMAN ALONE!!!!
There you guys go again, fudging things up as usual. How dare you change my superhero! SELLOUTS!!
Maybe Neil Gaiman's "Death" reincarnated as WW this time? Now that would be a fun comic.
Epic FAIL.
Agreed.
This is okay for her civilian duds but I don't want to see her saving the world in this. There are some classics you just don't mess with Wonder Woman is one. This reminds me of the outfit they put Superboy in after the death of Superman.
This is a huge mistake. I agree that the costume can be updated, but what they are going with is horrible. They should have gotten a real athletic apparel designer to do the original designs and then tweak it from there for superhero comic use. And changing the origin background story? Why? What for? Would you change Superman's background story? C'mon. She is the equivalent of Superman for female superhero characters. You can't mess with that. She is not a 2nd or 3rd tier character where changing the origins story might not be as big of a deal. This stupid!
To be fair, they changed Superman's origin story numerous times over the years. First in (I think) '55. . . then very notably in 1986 (John Byrne's Man of Steel). . . then they tried to do it again in the early 2000's with Superman: Birthright. . . and again not very long ago.
Not a fan of the new costume (except maybe the pants) and not sure how her new origin story will work with the character. Diana has always been an outsider in "Man's World". . . if she was smuggled off of Paradise Island as a baby and (presumably) raised in "Man's World" then her entire personality would be different. And that is, as they say, epic fail.
Mitch,
They tweaked Supes origin, but the mainstays(Krypton destroyed, Jor -El, discovery and raising by the Kents, Smallville, etc) were still there. This is a total revamp of the character's origins, and as you have pointed out , changes the fabric of the character itself. The new origin is a terrible idea and disrespectful to the icon this charater represents.
GREAT HERA that outfit BITES!! WTH were they thinking? Ya can't cover up a rockin' amazon bod like that!
She should still be able to show some skin (throwing 'em off guard w/ her feminine wiles) while she kicks some ass!!
Boooooooo!! :'(
They tried to change Wonder Woman in the late 1960's and early 70's with a costume change and stripping her of her powers. It was drivel and, in retrospect, was commercially driven. She looks like the X-Men's Rogue from the early 90's. She looked silly, too......
NO NO NO!!!!! I can think this MUCH better, this design is a travesty!!!
Do not fall for this people. Do not let BP's attempt to misguide you from the Gulf issues work. Staining a 'CLASSIC Wonder Woman' vs. cleaning the Gulf. Fight them on both fronts.... LOL
They had to do the costume change because they want to make a movie in the next couple years, and you can't make a movie with the old costume. It's fine for comics and animation, but won't work for film.
I don't know about that theory. Olivia Munn looked pretty good in the traditional WW costume in a skit on Attack of the Show, and she is not statuesque. A properly cast actress can definitely pull off the old costume. Example: Lynda Carter, the measuring stick for all potential "Wonder Women".
Better than the Arab version that wears a burka, and her only super power is cooking awesomely delicious falafel for her husbands 9 wives.
I don't know the story; is "I Ching" in it again.
Ok, Ok I looked again at the costume and I still hate it! BUT I do like the red top and Gold belt. The jacket, pants, wrist bands of death, and the cursed W imprint makers have to go... See I can be flexible....
It's nice to see Jim go "retro" with this. I've heard that look might come back in style sometime.
He's partly running DC? I hope he's improved since running Wildstorm. If it was making money, he wouldn't have sold it to DC. Yes, he's lucky; he almost sold it to Marvel right before they went bankrupt. He's a celebrity. Look to the state of California if you want to see how large organizations fare when they're run by celebrities.
it seems awkward using a lasso in that outfit. However, if DC changes the story (temporarily loses her power or memory, lives life as a detective or bounty hunter) it might work
If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Looks like the 'new' Wonder Woman needs lots more than fixing.
The one we had was great. This one looks like it is a reject from an Asian cartoon.
"...reject from an Asian cartoon..." too right. I think they're trying to aim this character (and maybe others to follow?) towards the same schlocky manga look that's taking over comic animation in general. Pretty soon all superheroes will have bobbleheads with eyes the size of their fists, tiny slits for their noses and mouths, and the physiques of malnourished three-year-olds. Yeah, the living-on-steroids look isn't realistic either, but at least the people are portrayed as adults and not twelve-year-olds who are somehow 30.
Damiana- too late. It depends on the artist. Take a look, that style is prevalent in several artists in the industry these days.
They traditionally tone-down super hero costumes for the movies. One of the suckiest things about the X-men was the black leather that everyone wore. The book costumes give them a lot more individuality. Spidey's is alright on screen. Daredevil's was changed to blood-red leather rather than his crimson fabric tights. Maybe yellow spandex is a bit much, but there should be a happy medium.
what a terrible design...looks like just another average punk chick with a fancy blouse. Is this what our superheroes are going to become? I want superheroes to look like something I'm not. There's nothing super looking about his 'girl' at all!!
...yea, a whip, a golden whip....and a golden ball gag....yeah, now we're talkin'.....
Wonder Woman still looks hot.
IIf Wonder Woman were to lasso me with her lasso of truth I'm afraid she might be offended by the things I might reveal to her.
....how about a thong and a cut off. wet wife beater....yeah, I'd like that....
My great uncle Marston is rolling in his grave. She's totally different than how he designed her. BTW, There wasn't a mention of her rope. Hopefully she still has it since it related her back to him via the lie detector.
What a sad change, just like in the late 60's with unisuit, NOT. GOOD. AT. ALL. As for changing the back story, well, good luck, but it will only end up as a sad little note in WW lore. Stick to movies dude.
I think theis costume S>U>CK>S
And everytime I try to think about different, I picture Linda Carter in it...and I see her looking as either the overweight J Simpson or the fat Anna Nicole Smith with tight jeans to hold the excess meat...
YUCK!
U-G-L-Y – KEEP THE OLD ONE!
the most I can say is that it will last for awhile but eventually DC will go back to her iconic one.
Radical costume changes rarely ever stick. Look at what's been done with characters like Superman when they tried to go with the black suit and then there was the electric blue. Marvel tried it with Spider-man first wearing the black costume (which became Venom) and then there was the Iron Spider. Even Captain America went through costume changes and came back to the red white and blue. Eventually the artists will gravitate back to the originals because that's what resonates well with readers.
Aitch: You're VASTLY over simplifying things.
The Black Costumed Superman was merely him after he came back to life. He wasn't in his duds. It didn't even count as a real costume because he was just in it during one stretch of the story. Right after that he was back to the old costume. As for the blue and red supermen: that was an idiotic move that tried to completely re-write the hero's powers and abilities. It was thankfully quashed.
As for Captain America: wrong again. Steve Rogers "died" and was replaced by his sidekick, Bucky, who had a new, stark-designed uniform. Even now that steve is back, bucky (and that new costume) is still Captain America. So, that change stuck.
As for the Spider-Man costumes: all of those changes were for storyline reasons. All of them. Not one was meant to permanently change the character's look.
Try again.
You must not have been reading comics that long...1st of all Spidey got the black costume during the Secret Wars run back in 82...regardless of how he got it...it still counts as a costume change as a matter of fact if you read long enough there are many times he has reverted to wearing it long after he got rid of the symbiote....and again you missed on Captain America...maybe you forgot about NOMAD?
Also regardless if it's for a 'storyline' or whatever, the bottom line is someone in the editorial department decided to give it a whirl to see if it resonates with fans and as I stated before, it usually results with a radically changed costume coming right back to its roots.
I don't see anything different with Wonder Woman...it will last about a year or 2 and her outfit will come right back.
Yes, actually, I have. I remember the nomad phase, and the fact that US Agent came from that time and was cap for a brief moment.
Still, it was astoryline change and not meant to be a lasting change to the character.
Same with the black spiderman costume. When he got the symbiote-that-would-be-Venom it was understood that it would not be a permament change. It was something new to give him a new look for a time. With the 'Back in Black" storyline and other like it, there were reasons for the TEMPORARY change. None of them, as I said, were meant to permanently change the character. If you want to harp, harp about the ridiculous power changes that each character goes through. Those are truly horrific. The spider-totem issue for spider-man, the red and blue for superman. Costumes are a non-issue.
Gents, I remember all those costume changes for both Supes and Spidey. They WERE meant to be permanent until DC and Marvel discovered that the readers didn't like them. Only THEN did they say, "Ah shucks, this weren't meant to be new costumes, jus' part of the story line." In that, they were just handing us a line of their own. The various changes were just the "New Coke" of the comic world. And the new look for Wonder Woman is likely to be another bottle of the same.
This what Thorrman said!
Just look at the female American Gladiators for costume inspiration... silly artists!
They had to do it for the new movie for JLA, the wonder woman character would not have to wear that outfit. That sucks cause tht would be the only reason anyone would watch that movie to begin with
Only Jeph Loeb could do a worse job.
The outfit is out of touch... and even the "signature" when she hits you is borrowed. The Phantom's skull ring has been doing that for decades.
Two thumbs, and both big toes WAY DOWN! Oh Gods this is just bloody ridiculously awful. I am so sick and tired of revisionists revising everything! Leave our Diana Prince alone you money sickened bloated corporate gasbags! Some things are fine just the way they are.
Wonder Woman's new look really is unbelievably horrible. Why not just put her in a business suit?
I wonder if Doug Cramer knows just how much his 1970's series with Lynda Carter has influenced the character of Wonder Woman? Because of that show and the actress who portrayed Diana, garbage like this new costume will never fly.
Okay, we get the idea of updating her history. Introduced in '41, she'd be nearly ninety now. Make her modern so the latest generation of slackers can relate–after a fashion. The costume, however, is a major fail. The best we can hope for is a majory disaster that leaves her in tatters, searching for something to cover her modesy, which will become the NEW New costume, hopefully harking back to the classics.
I bet when Lynda Carter saw this, spun so hard, she thunder-clapped into her old costume! Go ask Lynda what SHE thinks. I bet she hates it. Lynda's Wonder Woman and always will be. Keep Wonder Woman in her original get-up!
I'm fine if she wants to wear pants – it's more functional – but the jacket? What the hell were they thinking? At least give her the red boots back!
The completely reimagined origins will bomb as fast as the new "Catwoman."
Costume's fine, but she looks like she's copying Superboy now. As for superheroes wearing the same or similar costume(s), that's kinda the point. They don't deviate too much so that they maintain easy identification. Heroes like Batman and Iron Man have more noticeable costume changes since a large portion of their abilities draw from the equipment they have on them.
On a side note, is DC doing their version of Marvel's 'Ultimate Universe' now, where they reinvent existing heroes, villains and stories? That's what it sounded like to me when I was reading.
I'm glad this design won't last, because I don't like it.
The new outfit reminds me of WitchBlade more then anything else, The fascination with Wonder Woman was the Feminine mixed with power. Someone who you didn't mind losing to. It was the dominant female power, with just a touch of need to be rescued occasionally that did it. The new costume doesn't do that. Also that destroy the island thing reminds me of Vulcan going bye bye in the new Star Trek. The original made WW more powerful and interesting , because she still had family to protect. Just my opinion though
how stupid
This is not Wonder Woman, this more like Drucilla – Wonder Girl...or worse: 21 Jump Street!!! This is NOT a super hero costume...
Hey...at least she's not almost naked with huge boobs. Still kind of looks like she's about to do some break dancing, though. Not impressed.
This is outrageous, why mess with a good thing, what next changing the American flag?
While you are at it change America's pass time from baseball, hot dogs and apple pie to basketball, hamburgers and chocolate cake... huh!
Just write a more exciting story-line
There was a strange irony about Wonder Woman wearing something skimpy and yet able to still kick ass.
Why get rid of Paradise Island and all those potential story arcs?
the outfit is absolutely bland and it comes off making her look like Wonder GIRL. yawn.
I understand the costume needed to be updated but this one just does not work. Secondly, why does the story of where she came from have to change? Basically we are not updating WW we are using the WW name to make money on a new hero. Is there no imagination out there anymore everything is all remakes anymore
About time BUT way too far from the original suit!
I prefer the original costume she wore in the 1940's. When she looked feminine!
Plus Stracynski is lying or ignorant when he states she has only worn one costume. I can remember at least three.
Wow...that's umm. Well ahh the hair looks ok.
RIP Wonder Woman a comic icon for nearly 70 years. I predict sales of WW will hit an all time low.
Does anyone remember when Lynda Carter wore the diver's suit in a episode how hot was that?
Hate it! Don't like the costume/hair change or the origin story change. Where is the Amazon Warrior Goddess we all know and love?
I'm a BIG black gurl. Why isn't the new wonder woman a thick african american sista like mee?
Possibly because the vast majority of comic writers & artists are white males who have little to no idea how to accurately portray a female African-American character?
Hey Tammy I like the idea of a full figured black heroine a lot – invent one and tell us all about her!
Is "edgy" the new modest? What's edgy about this? It looks good but it's a few steps backward from her previous outfit's edginess.
this is ridiculus that a traditional super hero has to be changed just because they want it to be more modern. This isn't even wonder women it is a teen age girl. Whos idiot idea was it to change her background story to her being kidnapped and all of amazon sisters being killed?!
Wait, so every punch leaves a W imprint?
That would be the W printed on the BACK of the hand/gauntlet (they're not really bracelets anymore, are they? Sort of a cross between bracers and gauntlets...)?
I'm not a big fighter, but I'm pretty sure that backhanding somebody and punching them are completely distinct...
Why mess with a classic ? This version looks like she is younger and needs to grow up to the WonderWoman we all know and Love. Even the Bracelets are strange and too bulky. I commend them for trying to update her look but its not necessary. Superman and Batman (in the comics) are still in Classic costume why not Wonder Woman?
Sounds like someone is trying to "modernize" Wonder Woman ... yet again. It flopped in the early 1970s (a god-awful mini-skirt and mod style 3/4 length coat) and didn't last long in the early 1990s (tight, black pants and half-length leather women's jacket). Oy vey... *bangs head into wall & repeats until pain goes away*
WW's look is iconic. Warner Bros., please don't screw around with it. Fanboys & fangirls are vicious when you do something stupid to one of their favorite characters. Remember the Superman Blue vs. Red fiasco? Don't be *that* person, 'k?
The new costume is boring and uninspiring. I like the idea of WW getting a new costume, but please try again.
More trash for the geeks! Why not just go all out and giver her a camel-toe while ur at it you sick freaks!
Chill out nerd, it's just a CNN article.
Epic FAIL.
Assuming this is just prep work for a flick...
Why do they have her wearing that sh!tty half jacket crap? Might as well have her in parachute pants and leg warmers or something else that will be out of style in 6 months. AWFUL.
She looks great! I like the new change, makes us amazons look good :p
This is just stupid. I can only hope it hurts sales enough to bring them to their senses.
Bobby – The Amazons of ancient GREEK legend inspired the name of the Amazon, not the other way around. Read a book.
The reason Wonder Woman was reconize as a superhero was because of her costume; her new costume is nothing special and the new storyline seems to be somewhat violent. Also some of the best storylines were when Princess Diana returned to Paradise Island.
You are kidding right? This is not "Wonder Woman"; not sure what to call her...
So shes gone from 'Wonder Woman' to 'Wonder if they'll ask for my ID' girl. and I know its only a comic and all that , but propotionatly her legs are twice as long as they would be in reality. so it makes her body look tiny and girlish. and finally, Its more like shes dressing for 'casual Friday for superheros'. Big time fail
I just got two words for all the commenters here.....
NEEEERRRRRDDDD RRRRAAAAGGGGEEEEE!!!!!!!
This Is NOT Wonder Woman ..This New Outfit Sucks!!
The original Changeling with George C. Scott was much better (I'm an Eastwood and joliefan, so I wouldn't say it unless it was true). They tried to unsuccessfully change WW's look back in the 60s (made her more like Emma Peel) and it flopped. After the Lynda Carter show came out they quickly changed the comic to emulate the TV series.
The reason that the Lynda Carter show worked so well was for 2 reasons:
1. Lynda was an unknown
2. Lynda was super in the role, comparable to Christopher Reeve in Superman.
This new costume change, and the new origin, is a bad move.
Settle down people it is just a comic nothing to get so worked up about. If you want to fight and argue about something just turn on your TV to the news. Use the comic for what it is entertainment.
Be quiet, they are taking one of my favorite formes of entertainement and destroying it, turning it into trash. and for what a more mmodern wonderwomen she looked better the old way.
Jeff,
It's just a fun little argument. I don't think anyone here is angry or mortal enemies. We're all just nerds arguing about a costume. I like these arguments way more than the angry, hateful ones that usually come from news stories.
By the way, I hate the costume. What's with the stupid jacket? Why in the world would they give her a jacket? Super heroes should have capes or go around half naked in leotards if you ask me. & her face looks a little ugly here to me. I expect Wonder Woman to be prettier.
It's okay to argue about art. Art is just as important as anything else we argue about on the internet, and the arguments are just as productive lol.
Ahhhh....... NERD FIGHTS!!! LOL
LOL! Sometimes the Nerd Fights are the best. Me? Its either going to flop or fly, either way, Im satisfied with my opinion and dont really care what anyone thinks because Im gonna like what I am gonna like. 🙂
I think this outfit looks great. This a more real interpretation of a super hot chick who can kick your ass six ways to Sunday. Also lends more of an approachable touch to it. The old outfit fueled many boys minds with crazy fantasies and this one will do the same. Give it a minute...
She's not supposed to be approachable. She's freakin' Wonder Woman! She's one third of the DC trinity. Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman- they're the gods of the DC universe!
I HATE the new wardrobe. Wonder Woman was never meant to be a goth princess!
At first I thought she was a new WW nemesis...like an evil step siser or smething...lol She doesn't look like she wants to save anyone...kick some a** and blow things up maybe... The REAL WW had a brightness and positive, empowering look. I'm not sure how good an emo WW will do...she may be too distraught over a sad song to care about saving America...lmao
Wow, they updated her costume from the 1950's to the 1980's. Maybe eventually they'll get around to moving her into this Millennium.
Kayladie whats the difference there is no 6 ft blondes or black haired girls in the Amazon, So if she is a AMAZON where is AMAZONIA educate if you can. Oh thats right is south america
from the Encyclopædia Britannica
in Greek mythology, member of a race of women warriors. The story of the Amazons probably originated as a variant of a tale recurrent in many cultures, that of a distant land organized oppositely from one’s own. The ascribed habitat of the Amazons necessarily became more remote as Greek geographic knowledge developed. When the Black Sea was colonized by Greeks, it was first said to be the Amazon district; but when no Amazons were found there, it was necessary to explain what became of them.
Boo,...Hiss!!
I like Jim Lee, But this outfit sucks.. Wonder Woman is an Iconic figure.. sure she should have a wardrobe change every now and then but You can't get rid of her classic look, especially for this garbage
Would somebody go find a good gay who's faithful to the '70's tv show? We're not HAVING this.
Lynda Carter is Wonder Woman, and the costumes she wore are the only ones that matter. This new comic design is laughable.
I agree. However, I read that they have been trying to cast an actress for a Wonder Woman movie for years and that no one looked half as good as Lynda in the original costume. In fact, almost everyone looked ridiculous. Hence the change to this disaster.
Blegh. The biker jacket is ridiculous and harkens back to the 90's which was the nadir of fashion in comics.
Terrible, terrible, terrible! She looks like she's 12 years old playing dress up. Granted WW needed an update, but come on.
Looks like something from 1991. Check out the early issues Jim Lee did of the X-men around 1990/91 time period. Pathetic.
The costume is not anything I would have chosen, but I am more disappointed with WW's new figure. Wonder Woman (and Lynda Carter) used to have curves. This rendering looks like a 17 year old on her way to the mall.
I would rather see her go back to that outfit she wore while Artemis was Wonder Woman than this. I normally like JMS's work, but in this case I am not liking the "New" direction they are taking her.
Booooooo! That doesn't look like a super hero at all. Just looks like someone going to a club. This won't, and SHOULDN'T stick.
I spent a year in the Amazon and I never saw a girl that was that fair skinned. All the girls i saw where very tan and beautiful.
She IS an Amazon, she's not from the Amazon.
I like it, but my first thought when I saw it was Batgirl...
OMG!! They messed her up!!! She looks ridicoulos, ahhhhh!!! We want the real Wonder Woman back! She looks like she's going to a Halloween costume party. Ughh!!
Awful.
Typical man... doesn't like a womans story, so he edits it to his liking. There's a REASON she's survived as a symbol of female power, and it isn't because she changes her outfit every battle or looked "edgy." I'm not huge on flag-wrapping-patriotism, but she was meant to be a symbol of American female power, so where is the color scheme? Its been dumbed down for the sake of his new outfit. She looks like every other super-hero, and the "W with every punch" thing is ridiculous. I suppose next every punch will come with a "KAZOW" or "BLAMMO" like in Batman...
@ lturi yes exactly. She fought all the princesses on Paradise Island to prove that she was the best. This new background, just re-write the whole thing.
You do realize that the original Wonder Woman story was written by a man who had a wife and mistress living in the same house and was into dominant/submissive bondage right?
Typical woman commenting on a topic and clearly not knowing the facts WW was created by a MAN.
I did not take it she meant it was a story by a woman, but a story about a woman.
I sure it has to do with the wonder woman movie in the works, she wound not look right in a film in the classic costume
You must never have seen the 70s WW TV show. Lynda Carter looked fantastic in that old costume. The stuff dreams are made of.
The movie (if it exists) will draw far less male viewers with this new outfit.
Oh great...This is all a set up so Kristen Stewart can be the new whiney, emo Wonder Woman..... FAIL!!!!!
With no captions and a paragraph long explanation, no one would guess that this is Wonder Woman. This is not just going modern, this is going Grand Theft Auto ghetto modern.
1. Where are the red, white, and blue schemes to her outfit? How is she expected to fight terrorists (modern day Nazis) in this completely unpatriotic outfit?
2. HE'S KILLING HER SISTERS ON PARADISE ISLAND?!
3. Why is she turning violent and leaving a W on her victims? Is this some post-modern feminist BS?
She's turning violent and leaving a "W" on her victims in a totally-obvious ripoff of the Phantom.
As for JMS, he needs to realize that he is NOT the creator here (unlike B5); he's in service to an established character in an established universe and need to fit in rather than destroy and start over. Apparently some other folks at DC need to be told that as well.
Yes, the new outfit/origin blow. Yes, the classics need to stay the same. And maybe the idiots who made this decision need to be stranded on a desert island with all the godawful 60's comics of Wonder Woman in her white karate pantsuit before they become the second set of revisionist laughingstocks this character has survived.
Worst superhero costume update ever!
AMEN!!
It looks modern but not sure if I like it. that doesn't mean I loved her old costume. I agree that she does look like a goth girl than someone who could be superman counterpart.
I liked B5 but I don't like how DC is constantly revising it's heroes' origins. If you want to give WW new duds, fine, but why go back and change the origin time and time again?
S-U-C-K-S!!!!!!!!! It looks like Donna Troy's old outfit with a jacket and black pants. Even worse, trhe origin story is horrible too!!! Why people constantly feel the need to drastically change a character who has proven themselves successful for many years, I will never know. A tweak now and then is fine, but drastic changes are very rarely successful.
Does "politically correction" know no bounds. Why didn't they make her fat and plain to match most real women? This, a black Nick Fury, what's next? So, changing comic book characters will change the world. I think not. No respect for the classics.
Nick Fury is black in the Ultimate Marvel Universe, not the regular one. And the Ultimate universe is a remake of the Marvel Universe, starting in the new millennium, therefore Marvel is justified in remaking Nick Fury, so don't knock it if you don't know the history. DC and Wonder Woman on the other hand is kinda messed up, but to be honest, Wonder Woman has never been the most compelling of super heroes so I really don't care much that DC has committed a monumental failure in redesigning her costume. It's not like I'm gonna stop reading a comic that i never did in the first place. As long as this change doesn't adversely affect future Justice League publications, then it's no skin off my nose.
I don't like the look. Wonder woman is an amazon, and at the very least should wear something that looks like armor. I HATE the pants in particular. So 1980's. All that is missing is the stirrup pants and the manshoulder jacket. Oh. looks like she has those too!
Ha! You nailed it Mary. I think I also see a little tiny "Members Only" logo on her jacket too...
yes right of equality is justified new generation is ready for change.
yes looks like a super women. right of equality is justified.
HATE IT!!! Terrible. I'm a gay guy and this has zero appeal for any reason. I agree that comics tend to objectify women. I don't necessarily want my heroes to look like they are just off for an evening watching the latest Twilight movie....just saying. There was a lot t be done with the old costume that could have updated it. This is awful!!!!
Not a fan. Leave the classic characters alone! Didn't they try a costume change with Superman a while back too? ...and how well did THAT go?! LOL!
If you're referring to red and blue superman, that wasn't a costume change it was an entire power make-over that was utterly ridiculous and scrapped.
We're held hostage by any changes and decisions that are made without regard to our nostalgic preference. But, YOU my hollywood "shuffle cup" artists will suffer in the end!
Not sure how I feel about the new digs. She doesn't look like Wonder Woman anymore. She looks cool, just not like the WW I know and love.
This is not good. I agree with evile 420 Wonder Girl.......
I like it! She looks modern.
Rogue called, she wants her outfit back...
(bows to the simple genius of the statement)
BAHAHAHAAHAHAH you are totally right.
An the award for best joke post goes to mlukas.
mlukas tells it like it is.
Brilliant analysis.
They do this every now and again just to raise awareness. Like all the times Superman, Batman and Captain America get killed. This is also Jim Lee imposing his '80s Lee/Liefeld/McFarlane style stamp in the hopes of making a historic mark on an icon. Sadly, it will be rejected by the masses and Lee will realize he is just a cog in the great empire that is Time Warner. One of the luckiest cogs, mind you, but he ain't no Ted Turner.
...saaaaaaaay, CNN is part of that empire, isn't it? You don't think there was any, let's say, synergistic strategy here? Naaaahhh...
Oh, and Jim? TOO MANY LINES! (bring back memories?)
Jim has actually been given a LOT of creative leeway by DC for some time now. His work on the DCU Online game, for one. All characters are followinig his designs.
Jim Lee hardly needs to impose his 'mark' on an Icon to be remembered. The man is one of the most famous comic book artists ever, and the only one from his rise to fame (the Lee/Silvestri/Portacio/Leifeld days) who still produces quality work and is recognized for it.
It's a comic redesign. Big deal. Just like marvel recently redesigned the Iron Man armor. Or Bucky's new Captain America costume. It happens.
@Kermit Roosevelt
The Lee/Liefeld/McFarlane era was in the 90s. Get your facts right and you look like you know what you're talking about. Get them wrong and...
@Jack: you're right, I stand corrected. Just felt longer ago. That said, "Get them wrong and..." exactly what did you have in mind?
@Comic: hmmm. No.
No.
looks more like wonder girl then wonder woman... i got a bad feeling about this... why must DC constantly change their character origins???
DC changes origins based on the current times. They have and explained all this in Crisis on Infinite Earths.
They constantly change so they can get sales up on stagnant lines. Money, money, money.
messing with the costume and origin sounds like way-in-advance planning... - to prep the proper framework for a movie!
(yeah. that's my rumor, and i'm starting it).
Kolorblind:
Actually, they usualy mod a hero origin towards a movie IF the movie does well. That way new readers can more easily relate to the book after being drawn in from the movie. It's not always the other way around.
besides, DC does this on occasion. As for your rumor: they've already had two animated movies for WW. As far as live action, who cares? They're making a Green Lantern movie and didn't change him previous.
They're just setting it up so Megan Fox can play her.
they change because 1) they have people on contract who they can't keep busy 2)most working people in entertainment are the best salesmen (Yes! I wrote "salesMEN...") on the planet.
that's how it's done....
Why mess with perfection? It won't last.
Loving the new outfit. It's got that edgy feel to it. She has that "don't mess with me" look about her, very hot. Let's see how it does in the long run. The classic one was really good, but I guess they felt the need to change with the times?
Edgy? maybe in 1967. '57. Are those pedal pushers? if missie gets in twoble I'd probably kill two or three of her problems before I sent her home safely in a cab.
sorry, kids, no sale. I've actually lived a rough life, and she's definitely phony. It's the cartoonist's current wifie
in her gardening outfit without the hat. Just dowdy, doodies. Nothing super a bout this one except the patience you have to have around this one until she tells Maria the kitchen maid to go get the drinks and the hash.
It's exactly like "New Coke" and Rouge from X-Men, which both came from the '80's. WW was approachable and not a dark princess. The new look is all wrong for the 21st. century or for any century, even tough it is a more modest look compared to other looks now a days. I wonder how Diana Prince is represented? Does she exist is DC comic books? Change can be good, but this statement says overboeard on dark drama. Not a postive statement for wonder in wonder woman. It's more toward wandering in the dark world.
JMS is a hack & will ruin the series. he'll turm WW into some ugly alien creature. 'Changeling' sucked big time & so did Babylon 5.
he isnt as bad as jeph loeb, he did good on thor.
B5 sucked, G alexander? Wow, you apparently have zero idea of good television if you think that.
And just how many episodes of Babylon 5 did you bother to watch? The entire 5 year run flowed together into one big massive story and was considered by many (including professionals in the tv industry and critics) to be nothing short of brilliant.
I doubt you even saw Changeling, and if you did you obviously didn't understand it. Great movie.
The B5 storyline is undeniably well crafted, but it cannot be denied that JMS cannot write believable dialogue for actors, pure and simple. That he was obnoxious enough to lose all his co-writers and insist on doing it all himself is what truly kept that series from being great. He's perfect for comics, because his dialogue is better written and read than spoken. Always felt that if he stuck to comics and novels he could be the next Frank Herbert.
Actually, g alexander is right. B5 – to quote the King of Geeks Sheldon from "Big Bang Theory" – "fails as drama, science fiction and is hopelessly derivative". Not to mention that the new costume looks like Diana threw together something from a thrift store. WW has never been a favorite of mine, but these changes seem little more than designed to be change for the sake of change. Once the new comic fails to catch on we'll see a return to something a lot more like the traditional costume in an equally large marketing splash.
Thank you, G Alexander, for perfectly establishing your complete lack of credibility.
You must be a trek fan, I'm a fan of both but more B5 simply because it was more realistic.
Looks like somebody I'd meet at a goth party. She doesn't look like she'd kick your butt. Oh, I get it, she's a sleeper superhero.
Ok, the outfit is terrible. I think the cropped biker jacket it stupid and come on, you are changing her original story background history?!! That is just not right. She is a classic super hero and I think this is a MAJOR MISTAKE! Geez, you don't change a classic people....remember "New Coke"? Yeahhhh, enough said.
CSU- your ealize, of course, that Superhero origins get updated every couple of years, right? DC has re-written their character's origins several times, adding things, taking things out. Check out Infinite Crisis for example. They messw ith timelines line kids playing with legos.
Marvel does the same thing, but more subtly. Example, Ironman now has his origins take place in the middle east as opposed to Korea, as it was originally.
If you don't think comics ever royally change things, look again. Heck, the current superboy isn't clark kent as a boy, as it used to be; he's a clone created from an amalgamation of Superman's DNA and Lex Luthor's.
Bad costume. Bad makeover. Bad idea. She looks like Abby Sciuto from NCIS. NOT a superhero by any stretch.
Horrible costume. While I agree she is overdue for a wardrobe update, this is not the correct one. Any fashion designers care to dissect all the obvious flaws?
WHAT THE???? You do not take an iconic symbol...and change it. I do NOT like the new digs...You made her 'normal'...and who wants that?? She's supposed to stand apart as a super hero...I'm not liking this at all.
TERRIBLE!!!!!
LOL I must agree!!!!
I like change. This darker look has potential. The outfit is somewhat unusal but, makes more sense to fight in. A little mystery, a little toughness, ..Wonder Woman. Wonder what she's got? I wonder if it's getting the same outrage cry from traditionalists as the original did when it first came out.
I like it! They modernized her without giving her size quadrupal D cups and less clothes. The jacket reminds me of Rogue, a Marvel character, though.
I am going to have to agree with most of you... not a good look. I would much rather see this on news stands:
http://www.katapult.com.au/images/WonderWoman2.JPG
I'm with you. She look like some goth girl who shrinks in the corner and thinks she is being "different" by dressing like every other troubled kid in the nation. It's not cool, it's sad. Definitely not a superhero. Wonder woman used to be elegant and towering, full of light. A woman you respected. Now she is counterculture and dark. It's a sad day for DC.
wow, this is a lot of people with nothing pressing to do (or worry about!) she's a character, and characters change or their vehicles die... but there will always be people with time on their hands to debate the merits of various incarnations.
I agree with you, BTFU.
That's it... I'm done with this new comic junk ideas. You have distroyed another super hero. The costume stinks, makes no sense, and makes her look like some 18 year old kid. You guys can do better than that, I'm sure. You have lost another reader... This one's 60 years old.
Goodby!
@ Steve C
You know there have been quite a few story arcs of superhero's having kids...right? Like...tons, and not all are from recently either. It's been happening for a really long time. Plus there have already been quite a few arcs or super heros who were batting for the same team.
PLEASE.. no Megan Fox..
No story change..
If you MUST change her outfit.. at leasy make it for THIS decade!
Seriously though.. NO MEGAN FOX!
I like the new design. I think it's a great idea to update images when society changes to fit the current generation of kids. They having been doing this throughout comic book history, and it is still valid today.
Ugh!. No likey..
Certainly it's a matter of taste, but she looks like a chick you'd see at a rave, not a super-hero. It just doesn't work for me.
The jacket by itself reminds me of Superboy, and the overall outfit reminds me of the X-Men. Lose the jacket and I think I'd like it.
I have reservations about the change to her origins, but I'm willing to reserve judgment til I see what JMS does with it.
Okay the outfit is trash but whatever... to change her whole childhood is simply wrong!
It sucks. There are reasons why comic book hero uniforms are Iconic. Her outfit looks like something that was thrown together at some clearance sale at the mall. Just randomly thowing sections of clothing together in order to start a new short lived trend. I guess she also rides around in an invisible VW Mini too.
Why not just make her look like KD Lang? The entire point of Wonder Woman is the same as that of Superman – she's both iconic and not from any time or place on Earth. This will last less than a year.
I may be wrong but it seems I remember about 30-35 years ago she did change her out fit for a storyline, And she was dressed simular. She was going in search of some sort of teacher or wise man.
I know wonder woman and this is a tramp vamp costume not a wonder woman costume! New is not always better and the person that mentioned old new coke gave the best example I could give. Please see the light and keep our girl old fashioned and pure.
TERRIBLE! Why does everything have to be new and improved?
I think that the new look is not the best one they could've some up with but i do like the fact she's more covered. even as a kid i was always uncomfortable with her running around in what seems like underwear, they are changing her style to be more considerate of the young girls who will look to her as a role model, i like that, but her look here is just off in some way
Politic's aside, I think the new make overs for Wonder Woman and others is a good idea. in a sense it reconnects with the youth of the new generation. I mean think about it, Wonder Woman has been a kind of rallying post for young woman around the world for the last 60 odd years, but she's getting a little tired, most kids look at her outfit and think ' oh, thats soo old school' and such like that.
now she's got a new look, and ( hopefully) a new fighting style, and kids will want to read her again, same with Superman, Batman, and others.
In short, I say " If you can make it work, and make it believable, then more power to you."
Don't know what kind of goth parties you go to, but I've never met a goth girl wearing a jacket with shoulder pads that look like it came straight out of the 80's.
i like having a new look but not somethin like this she looks like wonder girl than wonder woman
why I gotta sign in again? In a foreign country to CNN?!
Too lean. She is not MY Wonder Woman. Her shoes/boots look tacky, chopped, etc. The artist needs to go back and BE MADE to RE-DO ....or be replaced...
Well it doesnt work for me but if you want to appeal to a younger crowd it may be right. i wonder what age group they polled before releaseing it.
Reminds me black and silver Superman (which was actually better than this)... or worse... Blue and Red Supermen... blech!
They wont want to fight her, they will give up crime to love her
