A walk down Oprah's generosity lane

The Hearst and Harpo job boards have undoubtedly gotten a workout since news broke yesterday that Oprah Winfrey had given her magazine staff perhaps one of the best gifts a boss can give these days: iPads, leather carrying cases, and – clearly the best part of the present – checks for $10,000.

While that kind of generosity is jaw-dropping in an economy where just holding onto a job can be difficult, let alone getting a tidy lump sum from the boss, Winfrey’s staff is likely used to it.

Back in 2005, Winfrey unloaded checks for $5,000 on her magazine staff to celebrate what was then the publication’s 5th anniversary. That same year, Winfrey took her staff on an all-expenses paid trip to Hawaii, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Last year, Winfrey did it again and sent the staff of her show on a 10-day cruise to the Mediterranean, including Spain, Italy, Turkey, Greece and Malta. The cruise was all-expenses paid for the staff and their family members, including food, transport and activities at the ports of call – the kind of trip that can run about $5,400 a head.

Now, back to hunting those job boards…

i had a son 35 years ago. he was born with his stomage completely seperated from his small intesties. he was in john hopking hospital for two and a half years, he came home after four operations and three arrest. it was a strugle to get him thru school, fighting to get the help he needed in the public school system. . he went to the kennedy center for preschool, untill he was toilet train to go to public school.. kennedy had to teach him to eat, talk and walk. i made a promise to God that if He got my child out of the hospital, i would give him to God and He did. He is a deacon at his church and he holds his minister licence. this sunday, june 27, 2010, he will be graduating from ITT. I do give God all the glory because i could not have done it with out Him.i can now go into retirement after working as a radiologic technologist for 41 years.. come on and praise God with me..

That is just one of the reasons why I like Oprah. More employers should take a few pages from her book and treat their employees with alittle more respect. Don't they realize that if an employee is treated kindly and fair, they will do more for them? Such idiots!!!

I am glad oprah can do what she does. I might not agree with everything she does but over all I think she tries to better people and the world. And I am glad she tries tries to help others. I also hope to some day either to get work with some as kind as her or be able to do nice things and be able pay it forward like she does.

Very well said, Cami. Being fortunate enough to benefit as many people as Oprah has in her lifetime is truly a blessing for which almost anyone would be grateful. I don't watch her show, but reading about her charity work, her philanthropic nature and being a positive role model for everyone in the world has sincerely made me a fan of hers.

Their are two main reasons Oprah and her talk show kind even have this kind of money. They are very good at what they do, and every market they play in makes them that much more money. The problem is every syndicated day time show out there has taken away production crews and on air talent from local markets that once upon a time aired their own local shows. I'm talking literally thousands of local tv jobs across America and Canada have been lost when they replaced local programing with syndicated talk shows like Oprah and Phil and everyone else. The same thing has happened to some extent in radio which was once the last bastion of local programing.

In Oprah's case she does a lot of good and for the most part can actually improve people just by watching her show. The thing is she started off on local programing because those time slots had not yet been replaced by nationally syndicated shows. I wonder where she would get the chance if she was just starting out today with so little local programming left.

there are no free dinners people...... should these kind of gestures be considered generosity or employee benefits? Great benefits usually follow great personal sacrifices on the part of the recipients. Oprah's daddy didn't raise no fool.

Was CAPS LOCK really necessary? I mean, seriously?

I get your point, but it looks really stupid the way you wrote it out, not to mention it's not even proofread. If you are going to make a comment, please let your words come before your emotions. This is clearly an angry rant by an angry person.

Being from Calgary Canada we are a bit on the right side of the political spectrum. Elisabeth gives the right sometimes too much zealous reaction on really nothing issues. The problem with the left is they can't stand someone elses point of view and generally won't even debate you because in their mind everyone on the right is wrong so what's the point. The problem with the right is they think the left is wrong too. The difference is they won't shut up until they've engaged and trapped you into a debate. They are not so much concerned about changing your mind as they are about force feeding you their opinion. Such is life.

If only all rich bosses could treat their employee's this way the world might be a better place and a whole lot richer.

PS: No really where do I sign up to work for Oprah.

I agree. Oprah rocks. I've always loved her positive uplifting show, but I never expected her to be so positive & uplifting in real life too. She's the type of person we could use a lot more of.
