'Judge Judy' tops 'Oprah' in rankings

Oprah Winfrey is known as the Queen of Daytime TV, but in May, she lost her crown to one fiery Judge Judy Sheindlin.

In a victory for courtroom television, "Judge Judy" soared past "The Oprah Winfrey Show" during the May “sweeps” ratings period, ranking first in daytime television. The new rankings represent the ninth time in eleven weeks that Sheindlin has bested Winfrey in rankings.

"Judy" averaged 6.4 million viewers during sweeps, whereas "Oprah" pulled in an average of 6.2 million. "Judy's" viewership is on the up, with an average gain of 637,000 viewers since last year, while "Oprah" saw a net loss of 602,000.

This isn't to say that it's all bad for Winfrey - she still finished last month as the second-most-watched show in daytime television. After 25 seasons, "Oprah" will end its run in September 2011, when Winfrey will move on to her Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN).

JJ is surely a no-nonsense lady! She of course does a great job in passing her judgment and creating the perfect drama at the same time, which adds the element of fun / entertainment to her show.

But being in the profession of Judiciary she should not overlook the fact that she is dealing with "humans" inside the court room and that she does not necessarily need to be so vocal about the character analysis she does for some of the defendants / plaintiffs (occasionally)....they are there to get justice and not to get belittled / humiliated in public, even if they are on the wrong.

And oh yes! Those of you who are regular viewers might have noticed – there are these 2 women (one with tanned skin n green eyes & the other with black hair) who you would end up seeing on almost each n every episode; seated either behind the defendant or the plaintiff. I fail to understand why a tv show of such popularity has dearth of live audiences in the court room. Or are they hired???? 🙂 I have seen one of those 2 ladies as a live audience on the Judge Joe Brown show as well. May be that's her fav pastime!

And let's not compare JJ's show with that of Oprah's – Jack fruits (Judy) & Oranges (Oprah) 🙂

I cannot believe the bar association she is a member of lets her get away with this behavior. She is unprofessional, ill informed (I have seen take judicial notice of 2 automobiles issues that were completely incorrect), arrogant . . . I know 15+ judges and everyone is appalled by her actions. She is an embarrassment to the profession and should be disbarred for her treatment of the parties in these matters – regardless of wheterh it is a TV show.

She's professional. She's just not afraid to take a stand and tell it like it is instead of simpering like most judges. Also, like Oprah, IT-IS-SCRIPTED. Get it?

We love America & Americans, so hard to add our two cents, however here goes... that this idiotic, adle-brained type of garbage merits 6 + million daytime viewers should make everyone cringe. This woman is a joke, a parody, a cheap cliché who beats up on your lowest common denominator citizens. Striking out at those most vulnerable ranks as entertainment ?? – a National embarassement is what it is.

Threads such as this prove the need for someone like Judy. 80% of these posts are moronic, void of logic, completely ignoring the facts stated in the article. Ex: 'She only won because Oprah is in reruns'...idiots, these are May sweeps numbers-all new shows. Ex: 'Why does Oprah have more money? Judy is not a smart business woman.' – This is so dumb, I won't even address it. Even with something as simplistic as who topped ratings, you idiots can't follow a 2 paragraph story. No wonder Judy has to rip someone a new one everyday. This country is filled with a bunch of non-thinking morons. Challenge yourselves and activate your brain cells...those of you who have a few.

To everyone who says Oprah's in reruns...you are correct, but she was not in reruns in the month of May, which is when the sweeps are. Her reruns just started in the month of June. She will not be returning with new shows till September or maybe even October, which is when her new season started last year. I love Oprah and have watched her since she has been on tv (worked all those years, but recorded her and watched when I had some time to myself) and the few times I saw Judge Judy, I also liked her as well.

I just don't know what I will do without "my Oprah fix" at 4:00 p.m. in the afternoons (now that I am retired). I just hope they don't put a talk show on that has multiple guests that are selling their new movies or books, etc. Yes....Oprah has guests who do the same, but at least most of the time, she at least gives them the full hour, not shows like the View, etc. where they're lucky if they get to talk 5 minutes. Oh well....I will miss Oprah!

What is impressive is so many people watch both shows, not that daytime t.v is required learning, but at least both women teach people to take responsibility for their actions, to be honest, to treat others with common sense and common dignity. I comment because I know that school age children watch Two and a Half Men afterschool and they would be better off watching one of these shows.

I enjoy the "show" for the entertainment value it has. She does hit those who create lots of children with different fathers and mothers, go on welfare and don't pay for them. But she always berates her "guests" for not understanding or knowing the law. This is preposterous, because none of them are her intellectual or educational equals.

There are reasons why she does not permit lawyers on her show to represent their clients: Because those counsel know the law and can call her on it...and disagree. I personally have never seen a person on the show in front of her who has an IQ over 100.

Yes, it makes good entertainment. But it would also be interesting to see her have to spar with someone who was at least her equal. There are millions of people in NYC, who are well educated and are as smart as she is...or more.

But you will never see them on her show. Ever. And yes...sometimes she is wrong...about the law.

Wow great responses here reading through some of the replies. Lots of great points made being positive or negative.
Robert Fellows – Has some interesting points as do others. And then utopian indigent's point "she is increasingly decreasing her own relevance through a growing bias shown in her selection of lobbies.". Truth is I love Oprah just as many other people may. But no one is perfect and people tend to stray sometimes and later may return to their sense.
It happens. I recall Howard Stern doing off about Oprah and how she sold out and how she is all about advertising and all of this. But she tries to give back ona huge scale in her own way. That's always admikrable. The problem is who are being given and why? There are poor hungry people all over the world and thanks should be giving and honorabed with the musicians who help raise so much money to help people. Oprah has had her time at the TOP.. She did it for Sooooooo many years... She's already proven her self. It's always easy to judge another person. The way they judged Micheal Jackson or Elvis. I remember Elvis's body gaurd sating don't judge unless you walked in their shoes.
We can all form opinions. Negaive one day and positive the next. No one is perfect.

Andrew Said: "Annoying and television is brianwashing for the masses." That's true but the reverse it true too. There are great educational shows. Just look at Discovery Channel. I wish I could of learned all that of the Tube when I was a child. Some reality TV takes you right inside of things you would have not known before. Has it bad point to but the technology is amazing.

This blog was about rankings. So Judge Judge has Out Ranked Oprah. The question is WHY??? They would not have posted this article if it were not true but on what merits? And I think the people have givin great feed back but I say this because I wonder in what way did they come to this determination. Soley on ratings. Personalities??

Thanks or posting the article. I read one of Judge Judies books once and admired it. Great sesable advise was given.

I've never seen a Judge Judy show where here conclusions were inaccurate. That takes some doing. It speaks to tour soceity's thirst for something it understands less and less of: justice. It also displays the low moral of the real non 'news-worthy" soceity out there.

As for Oprah, she is incomparable. However I think she is increasingly decreasing her own relevance through a growing bias shown in her selection of lobbies.

Daytime TV is programmed to appeal to the lowest and slowest of the population ... welfare mothers and shlumpy 60-year-old women who collect beany babies. These people were the same ones who supported Hillary Clinton in the last election. These people are SCARY. You think government spending is too high now? If these people were in charge they would be handing money to ANYONE with a sad story and an outstretched hand. And the working middle class would be paying for it all.

This is big news. An ageing and rather yappy fake judge whipping the legendary Oprah, Queen of Talk.

Actually, the last few years Oprah has been quite scattered. She really doesn't listen to her guests and the front end of her show has no relation to the middle or the end.

Production values have dropped some on Oprah. She can no longer rely on solid contributors like Nate, Dr. Oz, Phil the Thrill or Gayle King as they've all gone on to other Oprah backed shows.

Interview wise, Oprah is not even in the same league as Diane Sawyer, Gayle King, Katie Couric, quite a few more. She's bailing out at the right time. Another year and her show would be gawdawful.

I want to put a plug in for who I honestly believe will be the next Oprah – CNN's Brooke Baldwin..... very earnest, extremely presentable, not flippant and weird like other CNN women like Anderson Coopers' old cohort from latenight, who's now on CBS.

Judge Judy is entertaining and that is why she has high ratings. She puts down the people who don't tell the truth. She drills them so that they say the truth and she eventually catches them in a lie. She makes them look like the fools they are. That's fun to watch. Sometimes I think she is too harsh on some people, but mainly she is harsh to those who try to put one past her. If you don't like her, don't watch her! Plain and simple!

I have disagreed with a few of her decisions but respect her no nonsense , tough love and sometimes very understanding approach. I met her in a grocery store in Naples, Florida , where she lives . She was down to earth and charming . People watch her because they can't believe so many people can create the problems that they have and can't solve them before they come to court.
On the other hand Oprah has changed . A person is really smart when they accept they know very little about alot.Oprah has developed into condescending know it all with cult status. Her common touch has gone the same way as her Angels Charity .

Somehow someone who rips people who don't tell the truth, who treat their kids badly, who game the system... she's bad, even though court shows save our own communities money by taking frivolous lawsuits out of the court system and putting them on TV. But Oprah, who lets Tom Cruise jump on her couch, screams JOHN TRAVOLTA like he's done anything of worth at any point in his life... or giving cars to everyone in her audience, or bringing that dick Doctor Phil into our lives, ... but at least she gets people to read.

If judges would talk to people in court like Judge Judy the law suits would be twice as many as there is in this world. Judge Judy is a show (entertainment) and vulgarity as far as I am concerned. Judge Judy has so many opinons but non on how a LADY should talk and act while in public. Her court Keep it

If any of you Judy bashers & Oprah fans think that watching Oprah gives you class, think again. People in her audience, and I must think that some of her fans out in TV land, act like she is Jesus. She walks out on the stage and these ladies who are primped to the nines just go to pieces with excitement, pleasure, and anticipation. I think if they had to choose between her and God, it would be ugly. People are soooo easily led........ And yes, people like Judge Judy because she doesn't put up with any crap, and treats some people like the idiots they are.

Jaycee you complain about Oprah fans being easily lead, meanwhile you worship Jesus and believe in God so how does that make you any different? There's never been any evidence that God exists. Religion is just a tool to manipulate the gullible masses and keep them in line. You are the one who is easily led.

The TV industry is laughing at Judge Judy. She's getting ratings higher than Oprah but Oprah makes $275 million a year while Judge Judy makes only $45 million a year. Judge Judy is being played for a fool and getting ripped off and taken to the cleaners by her smart TV bosses who are laughing at Judy as they spend the hundreds of millions she earns for them. Looks like it does say stupid on your forehead afterall Judge Judy. LOL!

Azara, I heard this last contract she signed is $100 million/year for 4 or 5 years.....if true, and I believe it is, she's making more than 2 1/2 times Opra's yearly salary. She deserves it with over 40 years total in her line of work, so if you qualify for a job like hers, you can make the same amount of money....if not, clam up!!!

I think Judge Judy has a pretty good feel for people right off the bat, knows who is lying and who is telling it straight. That comes with years of experience. She is very perceptive, sometimes harsh, but there are times when you can see how she feels on her face, compassion for example. If she makes $45 million a year, then good for her. It does give you pause for thought on how money is dealt out in this country, though, doesn't it? We can give someone $45 million a year for 2 weeks a month of their time, but can not help people with no health insurance, properly educate our children, control gang violence and so many more things that would improve society and quality of life.

Well if they say so it's "probably" true to some extent. And comparing is sort of like comparing apples and oranges. They both stand up for what they believe in and they both are talk show hosts to some extent. I enjoyed watching the show many times over the years. Yes sometimes she get annoyed or angry with someone but it's American court room drama. Think Canadian court is a little different. But she is clear when she speaks and it's sort of reality TV so it's not so easy to judge it. She writes great books. Seems like a logical person to me. I like her character even when she fly's off the handle. That makes the show more exiting. It would be boring without it. It's like Chief Ramsey. A nervous cook master who is successful because he knows how to cook and on a professional level he delivers. But it works. And if so they would not be there.

More popular than Oprah. Oprah has the respect of the world though. Other Countries look up to her. I think there is probably something to learn from judge Judy. Every show has times when it lacks some. But for the most part the show would not have the ratings if it were not popular and now they say she is more popular than Oprah. Well a congrats to Judge Judy then.

Oprah went out and did shows on hand held devices and how they effect driving. She will be retiring and I think Judge Judy may just in fact be a good replacement for Oprah. Then when Tom Cruise jumps up/down on the coach.. I think truly judge Judy would fall in love with him anyways and Tom would get to have his cake and eat it too. All in a 1/2 taping.

    Peace & Love

If these two shows are the leaders, then that explains why this country is such a mess. Who has time to watch either? Don't these people work? Perhaps they record and watch later. The only time I ever watched Oprah was when Sarah Palin was on. I think Oprah is an egotistical, self centered narcissist and I just could not care less what she has to say. She fooled a lot of people with her "caring". I saw her for wht she is...a ruthless woman looking to get every penny she can before her luck runs out. She is generous and I will give her that, but I don't like her. I liked her less whe she chose to support that moron in the White House. As far as Judge Judy goes, she is rude and condescending. Things that happen on Judge Judy do not happen in a real courtroom.

Judge Judy has been around for years and has an excellent background and many years experience. People who think her show is a comedy and ridiculous are the ones that don't understand she has heard it all. She has such good common sense and wisdom that basically she can sum someone up pretty fast from her experience. The reason some people may not like how she rips into people is because of the excuses people have one after the other. There is nothing she has not heard and I am sure it gets very old real fast for her. She is very wise and very authentic. Keep up the good work Judge Judy and continue to enable people to take responsibility for their actions!

Carol, I agree with you 100%.A lot of her cases deal within the familys,ie:mothers suing daughters, brothers suing sisters, etc. With her 25-27 years in family court,I know she's heard it all, and she is an "expert" @ disclosing liars! Anyone who has raised as many children as she, and had so many teens, etc to come before her, it's a "snap" to tell when they're lying..... usually they lie when thier lips are moving !And these "so called "gifts vs loans" as unmarried couples live together for the usual time periods of 30 to 120 days before they tire of one another are so transparent, usually get "case dismissed" more than settled. It shows me how immature most age groups are, that rush into "living together" and argue over personal property such as cell phones, video games,I Pods, TV sets, computers,et all, I shudder at the thought that these same people are in the work forces of tomorrow that will shape the future of America!!
In ten years or more, they will be in jobs that demand mature decisions and public chices that will send this country further down the tube than it is now!!! God help us.If she can shock or embarrass them into reality now; all the better for us and our children tomorrow. Yes, even JJ claims this show is entertainment, but it's also enlightening for us as viewers. JJ earns every bit of the money she gets for her work. Out of her own mouth many times, she staes that over 100 million are watching these "idiots make a fool of themselves on National tv. Would love to see her try some cases of our present politions on her show......but that's one area where they would finally use some common sense and never appear, too bad for us!!! Keep up the good work Your Honor, we love you and your wit and wisdom.....

I 99% agree with MIKE and Rob II. I don't find the show entertaining what so ever. But that's me. As for her abilities as a judge ,she may know a lot of law but only a moron would not see how she manipulates a show by jumping all over a person who is acting like a decent human being and trying to defend themselves. I have seen her over and over cut short a persons defense to make fun of something they said or whatever it takes to allow her to make a mountain out of a molehill for showmans sake. Judy?,your not God, or whatever you believe in.I refuse to label her a judge. Don,t watch if you don't like it? Well, I used to have dinner every Sunday with my mother before she died. She always watched the show while eating. I would get so irritated I could not finish my meal. I finally told her we either eat at a different time or I will have to leave when it comes on. If I was there pleading a case and she pulled her stuff on me, I would be in jail long time for charging the bench and believe it or not, I am not violent at all. Nobody in my life of watching tv turns my passive way inside out like her.

Again, the article above says, "Judge Judy soared past The Oprah Winfrey Show during the May sweeps ratings period, ranking first in daytime television. I watch JJ a fair bit (in Australia) and I do enjoy it. It makes me laugh, and so did JAMES T with his comments! Even if it's not nice, it was funny. You may not live in a trailer.

I agree with Barb. I do like Oprah but Judge Judy usually will be watch more in my house then Oprah. Judge Judy should be nominated the the U.S. Supreme Court.

Really, this is news worthy? Oprah is in re-runs so of course her numbers drops off. . How'd the judge do head-to-head during the season?

Just shows there are enough idiots to support both shows. On one show you have Oprah fawning on some celebrity, and on the other you have poor people being verbally abused by a mean old woman while fighting over the ownership of a couch. Do yourselves a favor and turn on the news!
