Stedman Graham: Chicago doesn't appreciate Oprah

According to Stedman Graham, the Chicago area needs to sit up and take stock of the benefits "The Oprah Winfrey Show” has brought to the city now while they still can. Winfrey's Chicago-based talk show ends in September, 2011.

During an interview with Fox News Chicago, Graham said he doesn’t think Chicagoans appreciate Winfrey.

“I don’t think they understand the value of who she is as a human being and what she’s done,” he told the anchors. “Because a prophet has no honor in its home town.”

Mr. Oprah Winfrey – he doesn’t mind if you call him that, he said – added, “From an insider’s point of view, I don’t think she gets the just due based on who she really is and what’s she done for the Chicagoland area.”

First of all, he notes, “she’s brought a lot of international attention to Chicago” with her talk show. And secondly, there’s the humanitarian work that she does, like her school in South Africa, he said.

“I really don’t think she’s that appreciated. I think they take her for granted a lot,” Graham said. “It's natural for people to take it for granted until you leave."

Sometimes I contemplate if folks truly take time to write something original, or are they only just dishing out words to fill a site. This certainly doesn't fit that mold. Thank you for taking the time to write with awareness. From Time To Time I look at a page and question whether they even proofread it.Fantastic work with this article.

I grew up in Chicago and Chicagoans are proud to have Oprah as a citizen. Oprah used to be a real person but now has let her fame and money taint her persona. A great example was the Hermes incident in Paris – where she thought she could drop in unannounced and they would cow to her every whim. She has changed in some bad ways although she has done a lot of good. She wasn't the first to host a talk show out of Chicago and she won't be the last to find fame after being based in Chicago. She should be grateful to Chicago not the other way around.

Bottom line: Oprah does not care for Black people. White people attract attention and money, Black people don't. It's all about publicity. It's sad to see a lot of young black females who claim oprah is their idol, only if they really know what oprah is about.

Oprah doesn't care about black people? Then how do you explain why she built the most expensive school in Africa where she raises 300 African daughthers, campaigned to make a black man president, sent 250 black men through Morehouse college, makes only black movies, and spends 24 hours a day with her black best friend Gayle King.

He just makes statements to be seen and heard. Watch men, you bunch of losers. From the looks of last nights elections. This is the year of the white woman. We are the majority! We are educated! We thank Oprah for giving us a voice. If not for O. Sarah Palin would have never had a chance. The the Joker in the White House would still be organizing non-appreciate pathetic men of Chicago. the OMG lets hate oprah list..personely I dont care for her, or her show. but has nothing to do with her money, what she does with it or whom she helps or doesnt help. Im a small peon, i once wrote to her about a product i invented, small but helpful item. She at that time was helping single woman lowincome to get things marketed. I was a lowincome mom. I never even got a reply from my letter. From that moment on..I knew what she was all about. I wasnt looking for a hand out just a hand up. I would have repaid her, as i have never expected others to pay my way. I think others need to resurch their feelings about why they hate so deeply...

What? Is he for real?!? What does he think we need to do? Name a street after her, build a statue of her in Daley Plaza, rename Navy Pier to "Oprah Pier", or declare a local holiday in her honor?!? This city, which is one of the greatest city on God's Green Earth, has embraced her for decades without question. ...for example, my wife, mother-in-law, their friends, and a huge chunk of the local population are obsessed with the woman and regard Oprah as a deity here in Chicago. I also I love how his examples are all about her helping others outside of the country, not to mention the Chicago area. What really big thing has she done for those-in-need locally that compares to the scale of what she has done abroad? Do something to really help those-in-need locally and stop expecting credit just because she lives and tapes her show here! As a life-long Chicagoan Stedman's comments are a total insult!!!

I don't get it. What is he talking about? Yes, Oprah has done a lot of great things, and I'm sure God has a special place for her, but she's been rewarded on this Earth with success. She wouldn't have been able to be such a great humanitarian if she didn't have the money to do it in the first place. What is it that the people of Chicago must do to please Oprah? Isn't it obvious that she's where she's at because people like her show and support it? If it weren't for the public she wouldn't be so rich today. What else are people supposed to do? Stedman, maybe the little people have so many bills to pay and so many other worries in their head that they haven't been able to stop and figure out in what other way they can make this woman, who by the way already has more than she could have possibly dreamed of..... happy. Has that ever occurred to you? I'm sure the people of Chicago already watch her show just as much as everyone else around the country...maybe more. I guess the mayor could give orders to put up a statue of her if he really wanted to....is this what you're referring to? Just goes to show that humans are never really satisfied with anything. This is not just saying something about her but this is ment towards alot of people that are u.s. citizens who live in the us, who have millions and billions of dollars. You give money to all these poverty stricken countries to aid in schools and hospitals, and for health care for aid stricken people and food to make there life better, this includes the goverment also. What ticks me off to no end people. What about our own country!!!!!!!. There is so many problems with our own states, and cities with homelessness, poverty and people just trying to have a place to live and raise there kids in a good home and put clothes on there back and food in their mouth's. Every one thinks these people that give to other countries should be praised for their humanatarian efforts. You all need to stop helping other countries and help you own country first. The saying goes, in order to love and help someone else, you have to love and help yourself first. So quit helping other countries and help your own poverty stricken states and cities, where there is homeless people, cities stricken with aids and std's, family's that are struggling just to buy food, family's that can't afford healthcare, The goverment says the economy is getting better!!! I like to know where. Jobs are still as scarce as they were last year. Nothing has changed. Everyone look around your own town and cities, help your own community out before you try and help out another country. This is why the U.S. is falling apart, because the goverment and you so called rich proffit's are helping out other country's first before you help out you own. Quit trying to make your self look good, do the right thing help the U.S. first, And then maybe after we're fixed then we can help other countries.

She would be wise to spend all her millions on the poor black people in this country and wise them up to jobs and an education – not unlike herself – and make a better life for themselves instead of always looking for a government handout – which Obama is so ready to give!

A new Trinity – Oprah, Obama and _________ (lots of "O's") – scary.

The problem she has is that even with all the humanitarian work Oprah performs, She still comes across as a very self-serving individual. More so than most of the people I know. I mean come on, why would you ALLOW your photo on each and every issue of ANY magazine? She seems to have missed the line when they were handing out humility.

We are always quick to judge things from the outside looking in. None of us really know her and all that she does for anyone... be it the city she has said that she LOVES or another country. We are on the outside looking in.

Is Oprah really his woman? I thought they'd broken up and now that the gay rumors have hit a fever pitch, she wants him back. Hmm, I wonder if Stedman said called her a prophet knowing it would get a lot of press and then people would think they're together and forget that they think she's a lesbian???

I don't care one way or another, but it's kinda fun to speculate. I was on my way out the door with this woman already when she endorsed 'The Secret'....showed her true colors....GREEN! That's 'money green'...

I don't appreciate Stedman's implication that Oprah is a prophet. You don't get to self-proclaim yourself a prophet – not do your friends or significant others get to label you a prophet. My respect for Oprah went out the window when she turned away from Christianity claiming Jesus is but one way to Heaven. If the bible says He is the ONLY way, then you can't have it both ways. I believe the goal behind that stance was to embrace a larger audience – now including non-Christians and she's allowed to do that. It's what freedom of speech and religion are all about, BUT I am no longer a fan and do not watch her show. Wiith the power of influence comes responsibility, so for her to take that stance was a huge display of irresponsibility in my eyes. I also do not agree with or support the attention she gives to criminals she has as guests. She gives them the notoriety and attention they crave. Lastly, her donations and charity are commendable, but the money she donates is a mere drop in the bucket of her assets. It's not like her giving sets her back in any way. If anytihng, it increases her net worth via tax write-offs, positive media attention and political backing.

I was an Oprah fan from her first days on AM Chicago. As the years passed and she grew more powerful and wealthier, her demeaner changed. Oprah became very conceited and "full of herself." I agree, she has done a miriad of good things but unfortunately, the good gets lost by the aloof way she comes across to her audience. I didn't think Stedman was around much either, but apparently he feeds her ego so she keeps him around. I'm sure Oprah will get even more wealthy with her new network. As a native Chicagoan, I have to say that I don't think that Oprah has really considered Chicago her home. She never makes public appearances unless it's to promote her show or Obama. She's never seen dining in local restaurants and has rarely, if ever, publicly supported anything related to building a better Chicago by supporting education or the poor of the city. Considering how much time Oprah spends at her home in SoCal, I'd say that Chicago is not really her home. It's just a place that she commutes to for her job.

I could not believe what I was reading!? .....“Because a prophet has no honor in its home town.” It is very interesting Stedman that you are quoting from the Bible....but seriously, you are comparing your partner to a Prophet? Jesus said: "I tell you in solemn truth," He added, "that no Prophet is welcomed among his own people". With this quote, Jesus was speaking about himself!! He also said: "Take care not to do your good works before men, to be seen by them" – Mathew 6:1

Bottom line is that we do need to do good works but we also need to do them "behind the scenes" and not for glory. I am impressed by those who give without telling anyone that they have done so. Yes, Oprah has done many great things but as so many people on this blog have stated, she is just a human being, same as you and I, no different. To compare Oprah to a prophet is a stretch. I can appreciate all that Oprah has done during her career, but I have to ask the question to Stedman, besides the international attention she has created for Chicago, what has she done to give back to the city of Chicago?
You site the school in Africa, but what about the schools in Chicago?
Has Chicago benefited from Oprah having her show in Chicago? Sure it has. I am sure there has been an increaase in tourism, revenue generated, etc, but what has Oprah done to make Chicago better?
I am not saying this to be critical, because I think the humanitarian efforts she has done throughout her career are incredible, and she is an inspiration to many men and women., but cite some references to local things she has done for Chicago.

I find it interesting that many of you have made inaccurate comments about Oprah being racist towards whites. She has produced more white millionaires than black millionaires. Dr. Phil, her personal trainer, her cook, her gardener to mention a few. These people made appearances on her show; some wrote books; all became rich. None are black. Oprah hates black Americans. She only helped those Africans for publicity. Oprah was victimized by blacks every since her childhood. White America made her and she owes us!!!

Why are Chicagoans supposed to "appreciate" her for opening a school in Africa when our own schools are failing and kids are being killed in them. She opened her studio here in part because of the breaks the City gave her to begin with. Stedman needs to shut the hell up. If she actually contributed something to the betterment of the people living here not just some invisible financial impact that 99% of the people here don't feel, then I would think different but she is the most egotistical person in media. The global community actually has a fairly low opinion of the US, regardless of what the US citizens think. The same as you, I believe that I live in the greatest country in the world! I don't really care about who has the greatest sporting heroes in the world, or who has the biggest army or whatever ( Although I can give you some instances here of why Australia is the best )..the majority is just a peeing contest..Who can pee the farthest? However, I cannot believe he has the audacity to claim that Oprah is a prophet. First of all, a prophet is followed. No on follows Oprah. She has been doing shows for 20 years trying to teach women to stand up for themselves, to demand respect for themselves, and to be good mothers. Women are still dumb as hell letting men rule over them, and lets face it children today are more worthless than ever. And why is it if Oprah cares so much about women its two MEN who got their own shows because of her? She is no prophet, but rather just an angry black women spouting on a soapbox like a child trying to get attention. Its time for her to go and take this whiny pathetic man with her. Oh and one last thing...why should Chicago be thankful to Oprah because she opened a school in South Africa?

What it looks like most people are reading into the comments that this is negative against Oprah, well, go back to the story, it's about Chicago not appreciating Oprah enough. Oprah's done a good job both in business and her charity, but do you really think that is why she does it? For recognition? Most people do charity work aren't even recognized for their efforts, they don't do it for recognition. Oprah is a self serving celebrity. Nothing more than that. She makes an insane amount of money and her charity work is a way for her to leverage her tax liability. Philanthropy is charity without any return. All of Oprah's charity work has been a tax write off. Bill Gates is a Philanthropist, Oprah is a Oportunist. Now, she is an incredible business woman, I will give her that. But when I watch her show and she has a great opportunity within an interview to do something amazing she blows it by making it all about herself. Everone is enamored by how rich she is, and she makes even more money by allowing people to oooooh and aaaahhh over her wealth. As for this article, she hasn't done a thing for Chicago without helping herself first. People here in Chicago couldn't care less about her. We get it, your rich. Nobody cares here. The rest of the world for some reason will travel thousands of miles to sit in her presence. It's truly sad.

Um, Jon? Do you really think Bill Gates doesn't write off his charitable contributions on his taxes, too? That's kinda the point of having that deduction, to encourage the wealthy to give.

You don't make any money off taxes by writing off charitable donations. You don't even break even. All you do is reduce your taxable income. So, if you give $1000 donation, and write it off, you reduce your income taxes by $350 (assuming you're in a 35% tax bracket). You still end up with $650 less than you would have had if you hadn't made the donation. Explain to me again how doing that makes someone selfish?

Or instead of her piggish Xmas give aways to women sitting in their "Oh so perfect makeup and clothes" in the audience she could have set up 2 or 3 more soup kitchens for the homeless. Oprah doesn't need to open a school in the USA. Kids here have access to free education right through high sch & then grants & student loans for college. Every American kid who wants to learn CAN learn. I'm an immigrant from the "third world" & was absolutely amazed at how much advantage kids here have. There were days when I couldn't go to sch back home because there's no bus fare or lunch money. In America that's all FREE!! Thanks for the perspective. I'm amazed at the greedy commenters who don't seem to understand that there are people in the world who, through no fault of their own, lack basic necessities that we take for granted.

Oprah wasn't given her success on a silver platter. She started from the bottom, worked hard, and succeeded. She has no obligation to give anyone a cent of the money SHE earned, and yet she's given millions. Good for her.

How sad that Chicago hasn't erected a monument to a woman that has marketed herself and her mag and everything else into millions.
Let me see, oh no I am sorry I don't have any pity left. It is being used up for the soldiers and their families in Iraq, the hate being generated in this country by the right wing Repubs, the sad ecological state of the Gulf of Mexico. Seriously

It's her money, I agree, but if you think about it, she isn't as generous as people think she is. If you see the money she puts into charities and overseas, it is pocket change. If you want to make a positive change in the world you should start with your own neighborhood. Chicago owes her NOTHING. Just go away Oprah, take Gayle with you.

Imagine if someone hated you without really knowing who you are. I am a fan of the show, although I do not watch it as much as I used to. I also agree that the time has come for the show to end. It's not the end of the world. We say we don't care, but we take the time to respond. Hmmmmmm!

I worked for a major airline at DFW airport for many years. Oprah would arrive at a gate with her "personal assistant" and if the agent began to address her, her assistant would promptly butt in, and say "you will not address Miss Winfrey, you will address me". Oprah would turn her back to the counter as the assistant would speak. We all have our bad days and at that level of popularity, I can image how fan intrusion could be draining. But this happened on several occaisions. Actions speak much louder than words. And my actions have been to change channels whenever she is visable.

She's a brilliant, talented, hardworking genius who overcame so much to create thousands of jobs, pay hundreds of millions in taxes, give hundreds of millions to charity, and she achieved it all through hosting a show that shattered so many taboos, got America reading and above all, beamed positive energy into our negative cynical world. I think she's one of the greatest Americans of all time.

I for one am sick of Oprah and feel that while she at times has used her power to do good things, she abused her power and influence when she publicly humiliated the author James Fray. I also believe she is a racist. She publicly endorsed Obama, but has never before publicly endorsed other Presidential candidates. Her speeches about Obama during the campagn were all about making history with the first black President and little focus on why he was the best candidate. I am looknig forward to 2011. She needs to move on.

Im fascinated that Steddy is sticking up for Oprah AFTER ALL THIS TIME... where the heck has he been? Now, for peeps not appreciating Oprah for WHO SHE IS.... we didnt know who she was til we read Kitty Kelleys book. Now: what exactly should we appreciate?

Frankly Steddy: i am appalled at your statement. Oprah is the biggest name in the world! whats not to appreciate? And also, if Kittys book is to be believed, Oprah is a bit of a control freak and for the City of Chicago to try to honor or celebrate her .... well, goodness, how many disclosures would have to be signed? Vows of silence to be made in blood? You see the problem there, yes?

Most people are arguing about whether or not Oprah has done enough for the city of Chicago, which is kind of beside the point of the article. No matter how much good the woman has done, to imply that the city, which has been incredibly accommodating (hello, close down the Magnificant Mile for her?), has not been appreciative enough, and further, to imply that Chicago will be hurting when she leaves, is insulting to the very people who have supported her. Yes, people come in to the city to see her show, but that is hardly the lion's share of Chicago's tourists. It's a drop in the bucket. Oprah did not make this city, she's been a very high profile citizen, but she's not why the vast majority of people come to Chicago. I'm glad this didn't come from her, I think she's too savvy a business woman to kick her host city in the teeth for no good reason. And if she does feel this way, it's better that she's leaving. We'll miss her, sentimentally, but the city won't be hurting.

The reason Stedman has not married Oprah is because he is the worst kept secret in all of show business. How many men stay "engaged" to someone for over 25 years. He is a paid employee and she is gay. Oprah does not fool anyone anymore which is why she is leaving. She was wonderful in Philly and still great early on in Chicago but became way to big for herself and thinks she can "spin" us to beleive anything. Gay women.....always has been.

There's not really any evidence she's gay. She didn't marry Steadman because she's a billionaire & it's dumb to get married when you have that much money because divorce gets really expensive. She was also with many many men prior to Steadman. The gay rumour about Oprah only started because she played the therapist when Ellen came out of the closet in her controversial 1998 sitcom. But just because Rosie and Ellen are gay does not mean Oprah is. It's possible to be a champion talk show hostess witjhout being a lesbian.

Who cares about Oprah? She doesn't do anything but sit on her pile of money and show up for photoshoots for her magazine cover every month. She has a ton of people trained to do her will and a ton of other people to spin everything she says to make it seem Godly, and a horde of mindless followers who will believe everything they see or hear from her. If you believe that woman is hardworking and does anything but get out of bed in the morning I'd like to sell you the Golden Gate Bridge. A value to tourism, economy and publicity, of course. I like a man who knows how valuable his woman is and is man enough to demand she get every bit of respect she deserves. When you're African American & female & overweight, they don't just give you the respect you are owed, you have to DEMAND it. That's exactly what Steadman did for his black woman and he is a role model for black males everywhere.

. . . interested in Oprah at times, but not a fan. She is undeniably a huge success on many levels and so with the great philanthropy, comes some self-serving returns as well. I admire her strength as a business woman. Having skin of color is a non-issue to me, however I believe it created more distance and hurdles to cover as she was on the rise. Oprah's career path is nothing short of stand-alone remarkable. She has my respect and deserves to be honored for what she has accomplished. Not many people (of any description) have.
Stedman, as a smart business person and especially so close to Oprah, should know better than to convey publicly anything less than graciousness and support. I bet their private dinner conversation was interesting that night. Oprah to Stedman: "What we you thinking? Keep your comments between us and don't do me any PR non-favors. Leave that work up to Gayle."
Certainly Stedman's interview could have been more gracious from one so close to her. Leave the biting controversey to others in her PR machine.

Why is it up to Oprah to fix Chicago schools? A lot of the problem with the schools isn't just their infrastructure but the families that don't encourage their kids to take advantage of any sort of education. Most kids want a shortcut to a good life, they could care less if they were given a good school; they'd rather have material things.

As for the cars, yes, that was GM that gave those cars away, but I don't think any other show came up with that idea. As if you would have complained if someone gave you a car. Not only would you take it, but you wouldn't care who gave it to you.

Oprah showed her appreciation for Chicago by staying there for the entire quarter century her show has been on the air, even though the weather is way better in LA and its ten times easier to book celebrities. Without Oprah Chicago would be fly over country as celebrities made their way from New York to LA, but Oprah located the most influential TV show of all time in Chicago and made Chicago a MANDATORY stop for all the world's biggest celebrities and luminaries & created a creative media industry there where little had existed before. Millions of people have come to Chicago just to see Oprah, see her studio, press comes to cover her, and her studio stimulated what used to be a slum and single handedly transformed into a thriving urban area. She's created THOUSANDS of jobs in Chicago over the last quarter century and stimulated countless businesses. Even other talk shows like Jerry Springer and Jenny Jones located in Chicago just in hopes that some of the Oprah majic would rub off on them & they too created countless jobs. She's brought in BILLIONS and BILLIONS (if not trillions) of dollars worth of publicity and tourism for the city if you add it all up over quarter century she's been there.

To me though, she showed her true ego years ago when she had a night in honour of legendary African Americans whom she admired, had them all wear black and white and then showed up in a brilliant RED dress herself – so really who was the night about? That was it for me – I do watch her show from time to time for the subject matter but I find it really tedious when she interrupts the experts with her own 'expertise' – if you wanted them as experts on the subject, let them talk!

Us Americans are not appreciative for the things that we currently have. There's a lot of people outside of our country that never received an education throughout their whole lives, due to the lack of schools around their area. So now Stedman trying to get on Oprah about not giving back to her town? Stedman sounds very selfish. The word "Need" has more priority than the word "Want". Africa "Needs" while America "Wants". Should they find the biggest mountain and carve her face into? Yes, Oprah has fame and money, and she has used them in a positive way. She has helped people from all over the world, given to charities, and supported humanitarian work.
But if you feel that we should get on our knees and thank her, you are wrong. As a matter of fact, it sort of defeats the purpose of doing humanitarian work, if you need people to aknolwedge how selfless and humble you are. Hi Camille, I live in Canada and I've watched the Oprah show on and off whenever I can catch it. In the 1990's when I was in College, I had to do a paper on someone whom I admire. I chose Oprah for the simple reason that she was the only black woman on television with an intelligent program agenda that caught my interest. Her topics most of the times are interesting and thought provoking. Being a mother with a young daughter, I wanted to purchase a black barbie doll. for her and I could not find one because at that time they either did not have or weren' t in Canada. One day Oprah had this lady on her talk show and she was the person who initially created the black barbie. The next time that I was in my neighborhood retail store I mentioned to the store manager if the store can carry the black barbie and they did. So, I was able to purchase one for my daughter. Now, if it wasn't for that show, I would not have been able to get one for my daughter, who was four years old at the time. One has to understand that Oprah is a black woman living in the United States, a country that is very contraversial in terms of black and white. She cannot afford to show favoritism. You have to remember that Oprah is a very smart business woman as well. Remember Orsinio Hall (I hope that I spelt his name correctly), where is he today? He was not subtle in his actions and topics on his talk show as a black man in the public eyes. Again, please remember that America is black and white with issues regarding both races. If Oprah were to be the kind of person that most of the contributors to this topic would like her to be she would have already become like Orsenio Hall. Does any one of you happen to read what Jamie Foxx said that Oprah said to him in order for him to be successful what he should do and how he should act? if not, please try and find it and read it. Oprah does give to black and white America, but she does it SMARTLY. Just imagine if she were to focus only on Chicago? Then, Brooklyn, for example, would be complaining. Remember guys, she cannot please everyone and as long as she is happy and her conscience is clear I think that is what matters. Imagine yourselves in Oprah's place and have to make decisions such as, how should I proceed, who should I help, how will it be received, am I doing the right thing etc. I am happy that I do not have those decisions to make. It is so very easy to criticize, until it is us who have to make those decision knowing full well that some people will receive it positively and others won't. I guess it is just human nature to judge. But it is all good. I am sure that she knows that she just won't please everyone, however, she does her best.

I am certain that she has done some wonderful things, but she needs positive reinforcement? You need that in order to want to do something good for someone else when you have the means? Wow. That's weak character. I am sure she has received more than sufficient accolades anyways. Please don't make it sound as if no one has ever noticed. Honestly, there are average people out there who will never be heard of or have fame for their work and what they give.

I don't think Oprah does good deeds just for the praise and worship, but what's wrong with expecting some well deserved praise? She's certainly earned it, and the more praise we give people for doing good deeds, the more good deeds people will do. Ever heard of positive reinforcement? People who do good things deserve to be applauded and where we get this ridiculous idea that's it wrong for them to enjoy that is beyond me.

She did give back to Chicago. She put money into parks and recreation centers. I have to agree with Stedman that Oprah has done more for Chicago then Chicago would ever give her credit for. When the city needed her for the Olympic bid she answered the call and went. Since they did not get the bid then the City of Chicago blamed her for losing the bid. Chicago is full of it and themselves. I am excited she is leaving and taking her BILLIONS with her.

The city frickin' loves her. But she's leaving and what does he expect us to do? Wear black and stop brushing our hair? Chicago's a great town, it was before Oprah, it will still be after Oprah. And in those decades inbetween she earned billions while working here, so I think everyone has benefitted. What more is there to do?

Oprah has good intentions, I think. But she is very self-centered and encourages everyone else to be. Don't believe me? Watch her next show when it involves a relatively serious life matter. Count how many times she says the word "self." I was on the Oprah bandwagon in the late 90's and early 00's. I read all of the self help books and I soon realized that all I was focusing on was myself, how I felt, what I wanted, what I needed, what I wanted to do, go and be. Me. Me. Me. Ugh, what does Stedman want Chicago to do, anyways? Give her a processional whenever she steps out of her apartment? For the love of God, give it a rest!

Wow. Just Wow. I don't know much about Oprah. In fact, because her show was on during the day and I've always worked, I think I have only caught one or two of her shows, or perhaps maybe only short clips that make an evening news show. I do know from what I did see was a woman who seems genuine, caring and very generous. I read some of these statements and I am shocked at the "What did Oprah Do?". Besides a woman who shared insight and inspiration to millions, especially for the black race, she not only gave compassion to those Americans watching she gave money. Oprah gave gifts to her audience, something I never before heard of. I watched a clip one evening that on her show, she gave away cars to her audience. I believe that audience came from Chicago – or should I say to "Chicagans". I just went on the internet and grabbed some information for those of you who think Oprah did not do anything on a local or US scale. Please take a moment and digest what this woman has given. I hope you find it in heart not to ask "what did she really do?" but instead realize how much she has done and to give thanks and praise.

Where was she or what was she doing during Katrina's aftermath, or helping families in need who were living in huts and tent-cities when the recession hit hard last year? NOWHERE! She'd rather help out other countries than help out her own. And people call her a patriot... You get respect by giving respect, and she has not respected her fellow "Chicagoans", Illinoisans, nor Americans. With as much power and money she has, she could really make a difference, she chooses not to.

And about giving away presents. Price is right gives away more prizes and money in a month than she does in a year. Ooooooo she gave away cars, and still made every person pay the sales tax of 4k or something close to those figures. So what did they tell the people that couldn't get financed for a 5k loan to cover the sales tax, oh, yeah, they didn't get the car... And MOST of those gifts are donated to her, since they get to plug their products...

Jim you should do some research before you diminish others. She's done plenty in America. Oprah personally gave over $10 million of her own money to help in the wake of Katrina & raised millions more. Overall Oprah has personally donated over $306 million to charity making her the only African American and only performer on Business Week's list of America's 50 greatest philanthropists:

      http://bwnt.businessweek.com/interactive_reports/philanthropy_individual_2008/?chan=magazine+channel_special+report

She's also payed HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS to the U.S. government in taxes.

In addition Oprah has created THOUSANDS of jobs for Americans through her talk show and the other talk shows she launched like Dr. Oz and her magazine, radio channel, movies etc. She's brought BILLIONS of dollars worth of tourism and publicity to Chicago too, just by hosting the country's number one talk show there for a quarter century and attracting so many celebrities and media to visit the city just to be on her show or report on her.

I remember watching the news... the story about her giving a speech to college graduates.. about a remark something about having white people work for her. I was shocked. I was saddened by the remark. Still to this day, I do not know how or if Oprah apologized for the remark or gave any explanation. I assume she has an excellent publicist and that she did. The remark, however, doesn't necessarily make her a racist. It does seem to imply a need to feel a sense of conquer over another – which I would think comes from a place of once feeling somehow oppressed by another. Whether or not at an earlier part of her life she directly felt biased against or "not good enough" because of her skin color, it clearly left an impression that came out later in her remark. Oprah wasn't born Oprah. She is human like you and I. There was a time when she was just a girl on the street – A black girl that America did not yet know. I can only suspect that she had experienced racial bias first hand. It's something Oprah would have to work on. No one's perfect.

I still can't figure out why Oprah is a racist. I have been watching her for years. I have heard her accused of being a racist by both BLACK and WHITE people. Envy is a bad thing. The White people really started calling her racist when she started supporting Obama. SO, I guess all the White McCain supporters are Racist? And the fact that she has supported other White candidates in the past is irrelevant. See, the truth is, you know nothing about her EXCEPT she supported Obama. And, YOU hate Obama, mainly because he is BLACK, which makes YOU the racist. And the Black people hate her because they think she caters to WHITES. More ignorant racists. Catch-22. This woman couldn't be farther from a racist.

A White woman who actually pays attention (and she does do community work in Chicago, and just about EVERYWHERE in the US. She is on Forbes top list of Celebrity charity benefactors, but facts don't mean anything to racists, haters or people who don't pay attention to a little thing like facts).

My god, what an ego. Then again, this is Oprah- the woman who has a photo shoot every month because there is no one else worthy of gracing the cover of O magazine. I'm sure she does a lot of good works, and those should be their own reward. Aren't her legions of followers and her billions of dollars enough to satisfy her? What does Stedman expect, a statue and a parade? And she's hardly the major force bringing attention to Chicago. I grew up in that area, and none of the reasons I love Chicago and come back to visit involve Oprah.

I so agree! She has the biggest ego of anyone I've ever seen in my life! She devotes entire shows all about herself....like anyone cares. I remember the Mad Cow trial where she couldn't talk about it until afterwards and when the trial was over, she devoted an entire show all about what her thoughts were like a play by play. I guess it doesn't help that the women in her audience practically drool over her! Yes, she does have power and influence and she does some great things to help others...no one is denying her that, but there is a quote about doing good deeds....don't know it word for word, but something to the effect of if you're doing good deeds from the goodness of your heart, public recognition shouldn't be necessary. So true!

People that aren't familiar with the publishing industry (magazines in particular) make comments like this out of ignorance. So please allow me to educate you. The reason that Oprah is on the cover of all of her magazines is not about ego. It's about how the magazine world works. When you see celebs, people, artists, etc on the cover of MANY magazines, it's because the've PAID to be there. In order to avoid having to deal with people paying to be on the cover of her magazine, and it becoming both political and controversial, she's chosen to be on all of the covers. Smart business move – which is why she's Oprah and we're not.

I remember reading a story which stated that Oprah believes that the American kids don't appreciate what it is that she would give them. And as upset wth her for that comment as I was, after thinking about it, I came to two conclusions: 1. She is correct that we have a bunch of very spoiled kids in America and 2. The cost of doing anything here is ridiculous. Add to that another point: It is HER money and she can do what she wants. Why is it that we don't question others who do more outside of the states than stateside? Madonna, Angelina Jolie to name a few. They went outside of the states to bring other kids here. They started schools, in Madonna case a JEWISH school in Africa. That is a bit "Take what I'm giving you or don't" wouldn't you say?
We can fault Oprah for everything she does. But honestly, if you had the money, wouldn't you want to get the biggest bang for your buck. Oprah does do things for Americans by the way. She is just saavy enough to know that in America, what you do , you get a tax credit for it. In this way, she can help as many persons as she can.

She said, when American kids were asked, if they could have anything they wanted, what would it be? They wanted $100 sneakers. The girls in Africa, when asked the same question, asked for schoolbooks so they could attend school. That's why Oprah opened a school in Africa! Good for her...I applaud her. Maybe if kids in Chicago actually cared about getting an education, she would provide it to them as well.

Hell, she only has to step outside the front of her studio to see the homeless and less fortunate. The reality is, ratings are all she has ever concerned herself with.

      Julie,
The U.S. is still one of the richest and powerful nations on earth. People here have more opportunity than those in some of the countries in Africa. Those countries have been impoverished with constant civil wars (orchestrated by European countries) and diseases. The bail out money given to the banks is enough to make every American a millionaire. I'm not taking anyone's side, but don't judge if you have the opportunity to help and others and not doing jack...At least Oprah is.

I've been saying the same thing all along. She's helping outside of Chicago. She has not done anything for her people. Her show is geared more toward well off white women that can afford to stay home and watch that stupid show.

Not wanting to trash all Oprah does, but how about a little of that generosity here at home! There are people all over the Appalachian who live in substandard conditions and way below the poverty level. I think the saying goes "Charity begins at home". If she is gong to be using her monies for good, it would be nice to see some of that spent right here in the United States. Not every kid is unappreciative. Maybe set up some college funds for underpriveledge kids here in the U.S!

I haven't been an Oprah fan for awhile now, but I do appreciate the donations etc. she makes in the states. The problem is she thinks she should have more clout with her opinions and money.
Her story about the incident at Hermes in London didn't hold water, she never let the Hermes guy talk when he came on her show.....blogs said she and her sidekick King created a huge scene when they arrived at closing to make a purchase.
You can often see her glimse to see if a camera is on her as she reacts to guests etc. She used to be real.

If she is seeking to please man then i could understand why she feels under appreciated but we are here to do the work of GOD and to please HIM so instead of seeking glory from man she should "appreciate" GOD giving her the opportunity to be successful and realize the glory does not belong to her but to the FATHER almighty....peace, love & blessings!

My sentiments as well, Steadman ( Steadfast) calling Oprah a Prophet....the Man has lost it, while I appreciate the things Oprah has accomplished, she is not a prophet, she is better at probbing the facts out of you then most, and she has been blessed with a keen ability to monopolize certain situations...Steadman needs to heed his misguided apreciation, because all things come from God, not Man....

No, he did not literally call Oprah a prophet. Jeez! What he said, using a literary allusion, was that a person's friends, family, and hometown population rarely recognize how special one of their own really is.

What's wrong with modern education? This is one of those things. I'm amazed at the number of people who posted here can't recognize a simple reference mechanism.

I am sure she tries to be the person she can be, as we all should. If you think I am going to put her on a pedestal, think again. Her money allows her to do more than most. If she had to scrimp every penny do you think she would do as much as she has? If you have to toot your own horn, then you are just an attention grabber and your heart is not in it for the right reasons.

Okie Dokie! I believe Stedman Graham may have been refering to the scriptuere "Matt 13:57 Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor except in his own country and in his own house."

Question – Is he trying to make Oprah part of the Trinity? I think NOT! I'm sure there are folks that think she's a Saint but let's not forget she's a Human Being who in my opinion walks a fine line.

Suggestion to Stedman – Read the BIBLE! before you use it in this forum. Oh! it's not on Oprah's Book Club top 10.

"A Prophet has no honor in it's own town?" I think it might be going slightly overboard to call Oprah a prophet. And I find it really hard to pat celebrities on the back for helping those who are less fortunate. She has billions of dollars and lots of free time, she SHOULD be doing these types of things. If I was in her position I would be too. She has more than any one person could ever possibly want or need. I live paycheck to paycheck and still try to give back whenever I can, so I am not impressed. Show me a woman living a life like Mother Theresa lived, and then I will be impressed.

(even though, I couldn't have cared less about her show to begin with) She won't even be obedient and marry the man who she claims that she is with! (Mind you, even the appearance of sin is bad, yet too many people, especially women, are holding on to her words as if it's gospel! She's done well for herself, now press on!!!

Opra is a human being. She performed her calling on her life. She is appreciated by those who God has allowed her to touch. She is one person and the expectations that many more should be moved is obserd towards appreciation. She and other has witness the joy, pain, sorrow, happiness, charity and peace shes has brought to many. She is not the savior and the article infers worship in my eyes. She should continue to go where she is celebrated and not where she is tolerated. She is one person who was gifted to touch many. One has to learn that when no one is cheering for them they have to cheer for themselves. This article appears self serving for the individual who inspired it and that purpose I don't know.
