Stedman Graham: Chicago doesn't appreciate OprahAccording to Stedman Graham, the Chicago area needs to sit up and take stock of the benefits "The Oprah Winfrey Show” has brought to the city now while they still can. Winfrey's Chicago-based talk show ends in September, 2011. During an interview with Fox News Chicago, Graham said he doesn’t think Chicagoans appreciate Winfrey. “I don’t think they understand the value of who she is as a human being and what she’s done,” he told the anchors. “Because a prophet has no honor in its home town.”
Mr. Oprah Winfrey – he doesn’t mind if you call him that, he said – added, “From an insider’s point of view, I don’t think she gets the just due based on who she really is and what’s she done for the Chicagoland area.” First of all, he notes, “she’s brought a lot of international attention to Chicago” with her talk show. And secondly, there’s the humanitarian work that she does, like her school in South Africa, he said. “I really don’t think she’s that appreciated. I think they take her for granted a lot,” Graham said. “It's natural for people to take it for granted until you leave." |

Sometimes I contemplate if folks truly take time to write something original, or are they only just dishing out words to fill a site. This certainly doesn't fit that mold. Thank you for taking the time to write with awareness. From Time To Time I look at a page and question whether they even proofread it.Fantastic work with this article.
Blog post is quite engaging, many thanks for this sharing.

He should move on and let her get someone on her level,he has been getting a free ride for years. he will not marry her because he think that give him some power over her .
...amazing what makeup can do...see her without it and she looks like an ape on crack.
ahhhhh..........who was on the cover of 'O' magazine this month? last month?month before last?.........not appreciated in her home? She was afforded an opportunity to do a local tv show in Chicago many years ago she was NOT a star then..they GAVE her a break, did she go back and make any of them other than Gail rich??I'm just asking
I grew up in Chicago and Chicagoans are proud to have Oprah as a citizen. Oprah used to be a real person but now has let her fame and money taint her persona. A great example was the Hermes incident in Paris – where she thought she could drop in unannounced and they would cow to her every whim. She has changed in some bad ways although she has done a lot of good. She wasn't the first to host a talk show out of Chicago and she won't be the last to find fame after being based in Chicago. She should be grateful to Chicago not the other way around.
Oprah, a prophet? Wow, Steadman really does drink the Oprah kool aid, dose he not? I guess I would be spreading the same manure Stedman does living with a sugar mama like that! What a loser.
Oprah got rich off the backs of alot of caucasian women...but has made fun of the way white women speak....therefore, I will never watch or buy anything that has her name on it in any way.
She is a hypocrit and a racist and it is time for her to leave. Can't wait for September 2011. I just hope the stays out of the media for good.
Bottom line: Oprah does not care for Black people. White people attract attention and money, Black people don't. It's all about publicity. It's sad to see a lot of young black females who claim oprah is their idol, only if they really know what oprah is about.
Oprah doesn't care about black people? Then how do you explain why she built the most expensive school in Africa where she raises 300 African daughthers, campaigned to make a black man president, sent 250 black men through Morehouse college, makes only black movies, and spends 24 hours a day with her black best friend Gayle King.
I think Oprah's the best thing America has ever produced and I wish her the best.
Oprah is and always will be a money hungry....narrow minded...self serving attention (W)hore.....if it doesn't get her the attention she wants....she will have nothing to do with it. The sooner she is gone the better TV will be......
Its funny to hear people call Oprah racist because she endorsed Obama. Does that mean that all the white people that endorsed white political candidates are racist as well? Please stop downing someone for doing the very thing you do also.
I am a white female that happens to know many of you poster are angry black men and jealous white men. You hate Oprah because she beat the odds. As a poor female, she rose above the hate, bigotry, and misogyny that you as so called men of America had to offer. She beat you at your own game. Stedman is a joke along for the ride. He just makes statements to be seen and heard. Watch men, you bunch of losers. From the looks of last nights elections. This is the year of the white woman. We are the majority! We are educated! We thank Oprah for giving us a voice. If not for O. Sarah Palin would have never had a chance. The the Joker in the White House would still be organizing non-appreciate pathetic men of Chicago. Rise up women, whatever your race! We are in the drivers seat. Who needs men anyway? Okay they make good donors!
That time of the month again, eh babe?
Can we assume you are a lesbian, butch?
Hey mamanba, whyba dontcha beba coolba bahumma?
If Stedman appreciated Oprah he would have married her!
Prophet? Really Stedman? Show's you how dilusional truck loads of money can have on ones ego. I lived in Chicago for 4 years and Oprah had nothing to do with my love for the city. She's just a sideshow to an already great city...
A sideshow that produces trillions of dollars worth of tourism, publicity, jobs, tax dollars, celebrity visits etc.
Trillions huh...more than the US goverment makes now? Your as dilusional as Stedman. Take a step back from the Oprah groupie cult...
Okay, maybe not trillions, but certainly mega billions when you add it all up over the last quarter century.
the OMG lets hate oprah list..personely I dont care for her, or her show. but has nothing to do with her money, what she does with it or whom she helps or doesnt help. Im a small peon, i once wrote to her about a product i invented, small but helpful item. She at that time was helping single woman lowincome to get things marketed. I was a lowincome mom. I never even got a reply from my letter. From that moment on..I knew what she was all about. I wasnt looking for a hand out just a hand up. I would have repaid her, as i have never expected others to pay my way. I think others need to resurch their feelings about why they hate so deeply...
Are you for real? You expected Oprah to write you back? She probably gets 10,000 letters a day.
Seriously? You reached a conclusion of her character based on the fact that you didn't get a response? Come on people. How do you know your letter even reached her? or even her staff? She doesn't owe you or I anything. I can only imagine how many outstretched hands she has come across since she hit it big – one woman cannot possibly please everyone, as evidenced by the comments on this article.
What? Is he for real?!? What does he think we need to do? Name a street after her, build a statue of her in Daley Plaza, rename Navy Pier to "Oprah Pier", or declare a local holiday in her honor?!? This city, which is one of the greatest city on God's Green Earth, has embraced her for decades without question. ...for example, my wife, mother-in-law, their friends, and a huge chunk of the local population are obsessed with the woman and regard Oprah as a deity here in Chicago. I also I love how his examples are all about her helping others outside of the country, not to mention the Chicago area. What really big thing has she done for those-in-need locally that compares to the scale of what she has done abroad? Do something to really help those-in-need locally and stop expecting credit just because she lives and tapes her show here! As a life-long Chicagoan Stedman's comments are a total insult!!!
Odd, all the comments are about Oprah, rather than about the speaker Steadman. I expect that she was quite disturbed by this interview and incidents like this might be one of the reasons we have seen so little of him over the years.
At least Oprah's actually given hundreds of millions of her own money to charity, payed hundreds of millions in taxes, created jobs and broken taboos which is more than I can say for any other celebrity, or any other prophet for that matter. I adore the woman.
Oprah, Is an angry black women. She treats her staff like slaves!! And she has the gall to whine about what her for fathers went through. She is no better then a slave owner herself they way she talks to and treats her staff. She is a mean bitter women. I say Good bye thank God!!
Actually Oprah offers better pay and more vacation time than anyone else in media. She even took her entire staff and their entire families to Hawaii. That's why everyone wants to work her and almost no one ever quits.
I think Oprah doesn't need anymore appreciation from other sources. She appreciates herself enough so that she puts herself on her magazine cover every month. Excellent retouching.
Oprah, before you start telling people how to live – try getting a handle on your food addiction. I always wondered what the view of the world looked like atop that high perch you are standing on. Deal with your own issues and stop telling America they have it wrong.
Really, who cares. Oprah's been on TV for ages...it's time to hit the road.
She is way OVERappreciated if you ask me. She is just a talk show host. WAY too much money and WAY too much power of persuation. This type of 'celebrity' influence is really dumbing down our society.
This is just bizarre. Oprah seems like a nice person, but in the ratio of talent-to-quantum of appreciation, I think she may be the most appreciated human of the past century, with a near-religious following.
I'm not sure what more Chicago could conceivably do to "appreciate" Oprah – maybe put her face on the Sears Tower?
She's obviously incredibley talented to have maintained such a huge audience in such a competetive field for a quarter century & done so well in business too.
Oprah is one of the most self centered biggest fattest ugliest nastiest pieces of sh!t to hit the planet. Can't be rid of this human compost pile soon enough. By the way people, those giveaways she does, isn't actually from her but from her lame-ass sponsors. She doesn't give away a dime! Just thought you losers should know.
Actually Oprah's personally given over $306 million to charity, making her the only African American and only performer on Business Week's philanthropy list:
http://bwnt.businessweek.com/interactive_reports/philanthropy_individual_2008/?chan=magazine+channel_special+report
This coming from a guy who won't even marry her. She can be in denial all she wants, but she has been wanting to be a Mrs. Take heart to your own works lil dog.
If they got married, a divorce would be very expensive given how rich she is. I believe that's the reason she keeps refusing to marry him.
If anything people should appreciate her LESS...I don't understand why people try to turn her into some sort of PROPHET (I believe that's the term he used). It's ridiculous...she's a talk show host. She's done great things but so have a lot of people. I do'nt get all the hype.
I can understand why the Oprah show is ending. After reading all of these comments it is apparent people are so over Oprah. I'm still laughing at her comment during the Lisa Ling interview about her sister being in prison in China. Oprah said, " even a woman with all of my power couldn't help her get out of a China prison." Oprah's big ego is off the charts. Her "Obama" sucks as well!
Prophet ? Really ? Just because HE kneels at the altar that is Oprah not all of us do. Yes, she has definitely brought some noteriety to Chi-town. But she's made MILLIONS doing it. I still can't understand this woman's popularity ? I mean – she's a talk show host ! WHy does her opinion of what a good book is matter so much ? Why does her opinion on anything matter so much ? She's an entertainer – pure and simple.
I love you Oprah..for the years after my son was killed I watched your show daily. You gave me strength to carry on. Your willingness to help others changed many lives for the better. I applaude you and your group at The Oprah Winfrey Show for all your loving efforts to change many things in the world for the better. Well done my friend..well done!!! I never got the privelege to see your show live but always watched from my home with my daughter. For those of you that post nasty comments..do something productive and possitive maybe you will feel good about yourself.
Oprah is the eptiome of everything that is wrong in America. Too many "sheep" following the blind into the ditch. I travel internationally and Oprah, American Idol, Dancing with the Stars...all of them make America a laughing stock around the world. Turn off the TV, read a book, see some theater, support Little League, take up basket weaving...anything. Just get away from the Idiot Box.
Oprah has done enough of her own marketing – reminding everyone how much she has done. I think it has all gone to her head – and I am/was an Oprah fan. Plus, I don't see her out in Chicago promoting the city. She focuses on promoting herself and it's getting old.
What's funny is how he says what's she's done for Chicago and in the same sentence says she's opened a school in South Africa. Oprahs been appreciated to the point of being the richest woman in the world. How's that appreciation for you? What? Not enough? Most people who do humanitarian work for the right reasons you don't even hear about, like Bill and Melinda Gates. Why is it we hear about Oprahs school for girls in South Africa? Publicity. She's an egomaniac. Wonder how many doggie biscuits she paid her lapdog Stedman to go out and do this for her.....
What basis does Stedman have to make the oh-so general statement that Chicagoans don't appreciate Oprah? What does he expect? Weekly ticker-tape parades to validate our appreciation of her? Stedman is a twit.
I lost respect for Oprah when she starting helping her own race in other countried before any race in America. I voted for Obama but I wasnt very appreciative of her extra cash because she felt it was right. She is a closet racist. I have friends that are Black, Hispanic and Bosnian who do things to help out no matter what race a person is.
I'M STILL HUNGRY!!!1 FEEEEEEDDDD MEEEEEEEEE!!!
. . . AND she's underpaid.
What's the difference between Oprah and PHil Donohue?
Donohue looks better in a skirt!
I was going to say about 200 pounds. FEEEDD MEEEEEEEE!!!!
I don't get it. What is he talking about? Yes, Oprah has done a lot of great things, and I'm sure God has a special place for her, but she's been rewarded on this Earth with success. She wouldn't have been able to be such a great humanitarian if she didn't have the money to do it in the first place. What is it that the people of Chicago must do to please Oprah? Isn't it obvious that she's where she's at because people like her show and support it? If it weren't for the public she wouldn't be so rich today. What else are people supposed to do? Stedman, maybe the little people have so many bills to pay and so many other worries in their head that they haven't been able to stop and figure out in what other way they can make this woman, who by the way already has more than she could have possibly dreamed of..... happy. Has that ever occurred to you? I'm sure the people of Chicago already watch her show just as much as everyone else around the country...maybe more. I guess the mayor could give orders to put up a statue of her if he really wanted to....is this what you're referring to? Just goes to show that humans are never really satisfied with anything. I really don't get this.
Another prime example of how people with money live in their own little world. Oprah's behind is kissed from one end of the planet to the other almost to the point of nausea. She even gets sympathy when she berates shop girls for closing a store on time when she wanted to buy something (Hermes anyone). I give her credit for being a shrewd and powerful woman who built a successful media empire. But I dont think the world owes her a thing. She got plenty from it already.
maybe if she did more for Chicago.....he mentions the international exposure – who cares and the great schools...IN AFRICA! She makes a lot of money in Chicago, and from what I see doesn't invest it back in Chicago. It goes elsewhere...whatever.
She hosted the biggest most influential TV show in Chicago for a quarter century attracting every celebrity and reporter and fan in the world to the city. Thats an invaluable contribution.
I appreciate Oprah. I watch her every day
I stopped watching her shows a long time ago since they are all about closet makeovers and face make overs and no different from all the other trash on TV. It is really time she quit. But, at the same time, I still have a lot of admiration for her as an individual, considering where she started in life and where she is now, and let's face it, how much charity she as doled out. People made her a goddess, (including her Boy friend or whatever his status is) and when they do that for decades, you too will start beleiving you are one.
If Stedman appreciated Oprah, why didn't he marry her? I guess she finally gave up, or maybe they are secretly married.
Steadman sounds cool to stick up for her that way. I really like the guy now.
This is not just saying something about her but this is ment towards alot of people that are u.s. citizens who live in the us, who have millions and billions of dollars. You give money to all these poverty stricken countries to aid in schools and hospitals, and for health care for aid stricken people and food to make there life better, this includes the goverment also. What ticks me off to no end people. What about our own country!!!!!!!. There is so many problems with our own states, and cities with homelessness, poverty and people just trying to have a place to live and raise there kids in a good home and put clothes on there back and food in their mouth's. Every one thinks these people that give to other countries should be praised for their humanatarian efforts. You all need to stop helping other countries and help you own country first. The saying goes, in order to love and help someone else, you have to love and help yourself first. So quit helping other countries and help your own poverty stricken states and cities, where there is homeless people, cities stricken with aids and std's, family's that are struggling just to buy food, family's that can't afford healthcare, The goverment says the economy is getting better!!! I like to know where. Jobs are still as scarce as they were last year. Nothing has changed. Everyone look around your own town and cities, help your own community out before you try and help out another country. This is why the U.S. is falling apart, because the goverment and you so called rich proffit's are helping out other country's first before you help out you own. Quit trying to make your self look good, do the right thing help the U.S. first, And then maybe after we're fixed then we can help other countries.
I'd bet sugar momma told him what to say.
Hey, don't forget about us!
She really is an amazing woman if you think about it.
A prophet? Give me a flipping break! Sounds to me as though Stedman needs to retrieve his sack from Oprah's purse.
Oprah is nothing more than a whiny McMansion living tool.
I agree
Like nobody ever heard of Chicago before Oprah? Give me a break.
She would be wise to spend all her millions on the poor black people in this country and wise them up to jobs and an education – not unlike herself – and make a better life for themselves instead of always looking for a government handout – which Obama is so ready to give!
A new Trinity – Oprah, Obama and _________ (lots of "O's") – scary.
Maybe she could move to Africa and become Queen of Africa – would that be good enough Stedman (who has had a wonderful life living with Oprah).
I live in NY and I don't appreciate her either. She's a talk show host....BIG DEAL! When she finds a cure for cancer or can figure out how to plug the oil leak in the gulf then maybe I'll appreciate her.
OPRAHS A LESBIAN, AND SHE WILL NEVER MARRY STEDMAN
The problem she has is that even with all the humanitarian work Oprah performs, She still comes across as a very self-serving individual. More so than most of the people I know. I mean come on, why would you ALLOW your photo on each and every issue of ANY magazine? She seems to have missed the line when they were handing out humility.
I think she's fantastic. I'm really impressed by her ability to hold such a large audience every single day for a quarter century in the face of so much competetion, and then the savvy way she became so rich and influential. She's an incredibley capable woman. A once in a century talent.
I can simply tell you from fact 2 billion reasons she IS NOT underappreciated. As a matter of fact OVERAPPRECIATED:
To the tune of 2 billion large–her net worth. If that is under appreciated SIGN ME UP Steddork!
This guy sounds stupid.
I am sorry, but a prophet she is not. She has stirred many away from Christ and into oneness with themeselves and the universe. You either confess Christ as your Lord and Savior or you don't.
Maybe she's not appreciated but on the other hand maybe she's not satisfied. What would it to satisfy Oprah?
What a bunch of narcissitc idiots.
Oprah a prophet?!?!?! That is a concerning comment.
Oprah is the biggest waste of skin no-talent blowhard in Chicago – and that is saying a lot. I wish she would shut her mouth and retire.
Don't Hate on Oprah because of what Sted-the-man said. That's just his take on things. None of this came from Oprah. He should think highly of her and should want others to do the same. That's his woman. I think highly of the one I love and appreciate those that do. So stop blasting Oprah.
We are always quick to judge things from the outside looking in. None of us really know her and all that she does for anyone... be it the city she has said that she LOVES or another country. We are on the outside looking in.
I appreicate the positive influence she has has on many and respect her as a wonderful woman... just as I would any person that takes the time to do for others.
Blah blah blah to all you haters!
Michael B,
I just want to make clear, that I don't agree with you, I agree with Jennifer Justice. Also, you can never outgive yourself if you give with the heart and intend of God. Matthew 25:40 "The King will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.'
Is Oprah really his woman? I thought they'd broken up and now that the gay rumors have hit a fever pitch, she wants him back. Hmm, I wonder if Stedman said called her a prophet knowing it would get a lot of press and then people would think they're together and forget that they think she's a lesbian???
I don't care one way or another, but it's kinda fun to speculate. I was on my way out the door with this woman already when she endorsed 'The Secret'....showed her true colors....GREEN! That's 'money green'...
Her show stinks and that Dr. Oz is a joke. I learn more by jumping on my computer and going to WebMD or Merck.com. She is way, way, way overrated. I seriously have no idea how she got so filthy rich.
Now she's a 'Prophet'? I wonder how much of this interview was her speaking through him?
I don't appreciate Stedman's implication that Oprah is a prophet. You don't get to self-proclaim yourself a prophet – not do your friends or significant others get to label you a prophet. My respect for Oprah went out the window when she turned away from Christianity claiming Jesus is but one way to Heaven. If the bible says He is the ONLY way, then you can't have it both ways. I believe the goal behind that stance was to embrace a larger audience – now including non-Christians and she's allowed to do that. It's what freedom of speech and religion are all about, BUT I am no longer a fan and do not watch her show. Wiith the power of influence comes responsibility, so for her to take that stance was a huge display of irresponsibility in my eyes. I also do not agree with or support the attention she gives to criminals she has as guests. She gives them the notoriety and attention they crave. Lastly, her donations and charity are commendable, but the money she donates is a mere drop in the bucket of her assets. It's not like her giving sets her back in any way. If anytihng, it increases her net worth via tax write-offs, positive media attention and political backing.
Why would one give to set themselves back?
Could not have said it better myself. You hit the nail on the head.
Jesus Christ was just another overrated celebrity who demanded people worship him. Get a clue.
I don't like Oprah, but giving away money to get the tax write-off will not increase your net worth. Either you don't understand math, or you don't understand the tax code.
Oprah was one of the lucky ones who made it – wonder what she did different than the others ?
What a rediculous comment. Not appreciated? really? Doesn't the show lavish millions on her? if anything, I think it is not that she not appreciated....its that she is WAY WAY WAY overrated. She's a darn talk show host....not the president of a country or a company. Lastly, Stedman is a loser...his whole life is being "Mr. Oprah" haha
Wow – he certainly is Mr Oprah. What a moron. Yaddie yaddie ya. All bow to Oprah and do it NOW! I was wondering why we haven't heard from Stedman in a while, now I wish we hadn't.
Screw Oprah! Chicago doesn't benefit from her show, she does!
I adore Oprah. The best show on TV. Best person in America.
A prophet? Like, Isaiah or Moses. A prophet. Wow! I'm stunned. I did not know!
Oprah Winfrey is a prophet?
oy vey..
stedman is FOS and talkin for the money. He's got nothing else to do. O got lucky...and I guess stedman did too.
Boo hoo hoo. Give me a break. I work my behind off for a very small salary....now that's unappreciated! Millions watch her every day, some hanging onto every word. What? Hasn't she received a thank you or compliment in what.....oh, say the last 10 minutes?
I was an Oprah fan from her first days on AM Chicago. As the years passed and she grew more powerful and wealthier, her demeaner changed. Oprah became very conceited and "full of herself." I agree, she has done a miriad of good things but unfortunately, the good gets lost by the aloof way she comes across to her audience. I didn't think Stedman was around much either, but apparently he feeds her ego so she keeps him around. I'm sure Oprah will get even more wealthy with her new network. It makes you wonder just how much money does one person need.
Stedman is looking for a man and oprah is looking for a woman. The old hag Oprah has played out time for her to move onward
Oprah is a joke! With all her millions, why not transform the school system in the City of Chicago? Oh that's right, she asked a little African-American girl if she had a certain amount of money what would she buy and the little girl said, "sneakers." So because she said that Oprah decides to build a school in Africa? How about mindset Oprah? Assist with chaning the childs mind-set THROUGH education, not denying her one by assisting those in another country.
Oprah and the View should run back to back so that the easily lead can get their ideas at one sitting.
As a native Chicagoan, I have to say that I don't think that Oprah has really considered Chicago her home. She never makes public appearances unless it's to promote her show or Obama. She's never seen dining in local restaurants and has rarely, if ever, publicly supported anything related to building a better Chicago by supporting education or the poor of the city. Considering how much time Oprah spends at her home in SoCal, I'd say that Chicago is not really her home. It's just a place that she commutes to for her job.
Prophet? More like profit. Oprah got all kinds of tax breaks from Chicago, and Chicago tax payers pay for it when she wants to walk with her cameras down Michigan Ave. Buh-bye, Oprah. You proved you have nothing in common with 99% of Americans three years ago on your summer road trip, when you couldn't pump gas and thought someone would carry your bags into a Holiday Inn Express.
LOL, like your response profit versus prophet, Im stealing that one...and I agree
i went to one of Oprah shows and i sore i would never go to another one. talk about a big head she had one. but then that was when she won the court case against the cattle men. well Oprah has supported Gail for years. why not Stedman. but i did he did make his own money. to much hate going on just be happy for her
I don't live in Chicago, but I can tell you that I personally appreciate Oprah. I have learned many things of value to me from watching her show. Subjects that I'm sure I never would have sought out on my own. I believe I have become a much more diversified person because of the subjects and people she has opened my eyes to. I find her to be inspiring and she makes me want to be a better person.
I guess English is a second language in Canada.
Oddly enough Kev, in some parts of Canada, English is a second language.
NEWS!
This is why it is stated in the bible that it will be harder for the rich to get into heaven...along with they're cronies ( I added that part), they almost always require they're subjects to worship them without question or logic, Gail demonstrates this same worshiping...Narcissism has taken hold.....
I'm sorry, did you REALLY just relate OPRAH to a PROPHET?!?! Get over yourselves. Sept 2011 can't get here soon enough!!
this is so tipical of a lot ( not most ) but a lot of Amarecan's to trample on a person of there on kind thats does nothing but good for all,no matter the color or orientation.Be it Oprah or President Obama, lsiten to yourselves rant with all this rage.Could you do better ?????no probably wouldn't even get up the coutch to help.We in Canada would take them with open arms in a second. They are good peaple.Doiing good deeds.Making for a better America. Not perfect but giving it there best shot.A lot like better the Bush style.Arrogant, defiant, pumpus that uses the old scare tacktics, and all lies. These peaple do not déserve Oprah and the President.
Wow you could have used some of Oprah's money to get a better education, your spelling is deplorable!!!....Where I have an appreciation for Oprah, we are to worship NO MAN....this is over the top, a prophet she is not....
Your Bbile verse quoted is taken way out of context. Oprah is the target of much deserved criticism in the Christian Community. You ought to be ashamed of yourself to even associate her with that verse. Anyone one who has to take over a street to perform a show shows how their ego is so large. Her good deeds are alll for show.
Good ridance to Oprah
Stedman who?
Thank you Oprah for opening your school of child abuse in South Africa.
Please, give me a break!- I am tired of seeing and hearing about Oprah, the woman has all be brainwashed all stay-at-home mons into to thinking she is the last word on any subject in the universe. People should have long ago gotten a grip on themselves and moved away from her and diabotical program that she has tried to implant into this nations minds. Its hard to tell at times if she thinks she black or white. It changes from day to day, and yes I for one do think she is a racist....
'World's largest beard claims Oprah not appreciate'
I'M HUNGRY!!!!!!
Oprah is an entertainer. Like every other rich entertainer she got lucky. She was at the right place at the right time and boom there it is. Should anyone take entertainers seriously, no. Oprah is nobody.
Yes, she built a school in Africa.....well what does that make her. Nothing against the
children in Africa, however, we have children all over the United States who can use
Oprah's money to help them get a better education. Oprah made her money in the United States,
why not keep it here? I wouldn't blame the people of Chicago if they got upset with her. I used
to like her.....but, now I only see her as a "Greedy" person who can't be rich enough or famous
enough.
I think she is prejudice and a hugh phoney – she wants people to think she cares but she couldn't give a hoot except how much money she will be making from whatever she gets involved in. I don't like her, don't watch her show and won't miss her.
I could not believe what I was reading!? .....“Because a prophet has no honor in its home town.” It is very interesting Stedman that you are quoting from the Bible....but seriously, you are comparing your partner to a Prophet? Jesus said: "I tell you in solemn truth," He added, "that no Prophet is welcomed among his own people". With this quote, Jesus was speaking about himself!! He also said: "Take care not to do your good works before men, to be seen by them" – Mathew 6:1
Bottom line is that we do need to do good works but we also need to do them "behind the scenes" and not for glory. I am impressed by those who give without telling anyone that they have done so. Yes, Oprah has done many great things but as so many people on this blog have stated, she is just a human being, same as you and I, no different. Stedman, I wonder if Mother Theresa felt that India did not fully appreciate her? Think about it.
If I hear one more word of praise about Oprah, I'll barf. And from Stedman? And using the word "PROPHET?" UGH! She probably TOLD him to say this! That woman is a fraud, a fake, and can't even help HERSELF. Yeah, she throws money around, but also wears $1,000 pairs of shoes and shmoozes with her celebrity guests. She's condescending to "bad" people. She LIKES being rich. I'm not rich, but I was able to lose weight and KEEP it off for many years now. No, Oprah, it's not your thyroid. No, Oprah, I have stress, too. And, Oprah, everybody does everything for you, so what's YOUR excuse? UGH!
He's so right! I mean, I had never heard of Chicago before Oprah Winfrey... NOT!
She's a friggin TALK SHOW HOST... nothing more.
Well perhaps they will have a bronze statue for her and a key to the city before she leaves...Seriously, she's a generous person but Mother Theresa?! NOT! She's a celebrity, that's it! BFD! why are we so obsessed with that? the show is ending so she can go make more zillions with her own network-and yeah, I'm just a tad envious. Oprah: if you're reading this...please send money...like a million would do just fine 🙂
Who the hell is Oprah and why is she GOD? Why must I look at her as a prophet? Will she live forever? Why must I appreciate her? Should I bow when she crosses my path?
Come on! Just a talk show host people...please fade away Orka.
Greg it is spelled Orca, if you are referring to a killer whale. Oprah is more of a stubby legged hippo though. lol She is lucky the cattlemen of Texas didn't BBQ her a few years back. Oprah is wanna be white blow hard. All you white worshipers are traitors.
Wow, Stedman, you are a serious jerk. Why should I appreciate someone who's spent her entire career telling me that everything I do it wrong and that I should live my life her way? It's a miracle Oprah can still stand upright, as much as she spends her time twisted around patting her own back.
Stedman, you're a tool.
Oh – and a prophet? These people are entirely too full of themselves. Go eat something Oprah.
I think she's the most talented person in the history of show business. Her ability to energize the audience, make us laugh, cry, get excited, get inspired. Her body language, facial expressions, wit, sarcasm, timing, emotional range, & spontaniety are pure genius. The woman was born to be on TV. She's a real star. No wonder she has dominated such a competetive field for so long. So theatrical and larger than life. A throwback to the glory days of show business when big was really big.
Who said she should get appreciation???? If you are doing something from your heart AND have the right motives, you are not seeking appreciation. If you need appreciation, buy a dog.
is South Africa in Chicago ???
I do not believe that Stedman was referring to Oprah as a prophet, its just a comparison MEANING THAT NO MATTER WHAT YOU DO IN YOUR OWN COUNTRY YOU ARE NOT GIVEN CREDIT FOR IT. ( BY THE WAY , THE MAN WHO MADE THAT STATEMENT WAS AND STILL IS THE SON OF GOD. not a prophet. Look at the good she did in Louisanna after Katrina.
Will the renaming of Chicago to Oprah City make this doosh happy...or is he just looking for deity status for that lard a**. Tell use something interesting Stedman...do you actually bang Oprah or are you the facade for Gail?
Are you serious??? Give me a break.
According to the book that is coming out she is not the saint everyone professess her to be. Lets not be fooled by any fascade. Yes she has done good but so have alot of other people. Doesnt mean she needs to be nominated for sainthood.
I really like Oprah a lot. Her accomplishments are mind blowing.
did i know her show was taped in chicago? no. did i know her school for girls was not in chicago but was in africa? yes. so, chicagoans are ungrateful because? rather than help the poor in chicago, oprah decided to help the poor in africa and chicago appears ungrateful. well, i can understand that. oprah, there are plenty of poor people all over the u.s. that desperately need help. and if you want to focus on only black ones, i am sure you can find plenty of poor black people in the u.s., and especially in chicago who desperately need help. i.e., "charity begins at home."
whaa whaa whaa
The Oprah Show, O magazine, Oxygen, Oprah's Book Club, Dr. Oz, Dr. Phil, Orpah Specials, HARPO Productions. Oprah already appreciaites herself more than the WORLD possibly can.
And Steadman, really, everyone knows that GAIL is Mr. Oprah. Go back to shopping for overly expensive clothes and shut up.
Oprah isn't famous enough?? lol My heart bleeds for her.
A prophet?.........please give me a break...the next thing you know she'll turn into the second coming... Oprah is another celebrity, albeit a good one and a generous person.....but please, can the reference to a diety.
She spent money in a school in Africa because she thought that kids in the US are spoiled and would want only $100.00 sneakers. What about the freebies that you doll out to your audience of worshipping middle class women just for attending your lame show?
Well I certainly appreciate her. I just love the woman.
A nice, talented lady...sure, but a prophet...no way!!
@Becky-I agree!!!
Huh? Why would chicago appreciate her opening a school in Africa? And all I ever see is folks worshipping at the feet of the windbag. If they are doing less of this, it is because she tarnished her reputation by jumping into politics – as the folks of chicago see the mistake of obama, so do they see the mistake of following oprah.
I do wonder what happened to make him make this statement. There is probably no other city that appreciates her more. And this doesn't sound like something Ms O would complain about...or is it? Maybe if Gale says it..I'll believe it..lol
The sooner the show ends and the she is out of the spotlight, the better!!!
She is one of the world's biggest hypocrits.
Oprah left Chicago a long time ago. Yes, the Harpo Studio's 'show' remains in Chicago, but she has lived in LA for a many years.
OMG we have truly become the "Ugly American"...
chastising one person for what another person said...
I say "off with their heads"..
be blessed Oprah...
so this is what "do unto others as you would have them do unto you""
good so we can now spew hate and nastiness on these posters Whee let's do it
of course we have no facts.. not a problem
This article makes it sound like Oprah is the only thing that defines Chicago as a city. There's some hubris for you!
It's unfair of Stedman to point out Chicago like that.
I'm from Roanoke and I don't appreciate Oprah either.
To compare Oprah to a prophet is a stretch. I can appreciate all that Oprah has done during her career, but I have to ask the question to Stedman, besides the international attention she has created for Chicago, what has she done to give back to the city of Chicago?
You site the school in Africa, but what about the schools in Chicago?
Has Chicago benefited from Oprah having her show in Chicago? Sure it has. I am sure there has been an increaase in tourism, revenue generated, etc, but what has Oprah done to make Chicago better?
I am not saying this to be critical, because I think the humanitarian efforts she has done throughout her career are incredible, and she is an inspiration to many men and women., but cite some references to local things she has done for Chicago.
thanks oprah for making millions of dollars. we really appreciate you. now get lost.
Maybe Stedman isn't gettting the love that he thinks that he deserves as Mr. Oprah, (LOL)
Chicago stands on its own, Stedman without Oprah's help, but do YOU?
I AM NOT CERTAIN IF I CARE ABOUT OPRAH. THERE ARE TWO THINGS THAT BUG THE HELL OUT OF ME. WHY WOULD SHE PUT A PHOTO OF HERSELF ON THE COVER OF O MAGAZINE SO AIRBRUSHED AND DIGITALLY RETOUCHED THAT SHE IS ALWAYS 50# LIGHTER. NEXT, WHEN I WATCH HER SHOW AND THERE IS A SINGER WHO PERFORMS WHO IS BLACK SHE WILL SING ALONG PLAYING TO THE CAMERA. DID YOU SEE HER AND LIONEL RITCHIE? ONE MORE THING SHE NEVER PUT HER HANDS IN HER POCKET TO PURCHASE ALL OF THOSE FREE CARS THE MANUFACTURE GAVE THEN AWAY FOR THEIR ADVERTISING VALUE. NICE GOING PLASTIC WOMAN.
She didn't pay for the cars (why should she when she's providing free advertising) but she's personally given over $306 million to charity out of her own pocket behind the scenes:
http://bwnt.businessweek.com/interactive_reports/philanthropy_individual_2008/?chan=magazine+channel_special+report
I find it interesting that many of you have made inaccurate comments about Oprah being racist towards whites. She has produced more white millionaires than black millionaires. Dr. Phil, her personal trainer, her cook, her gardener to mention a few. These people made appearances on her show; some wrote books; all became rich. None are black. Oprah hates black Americans. She only helped those Africans for publicity. Oprah was victimized by blacks every since her childhood. White America made her and she owes us!!!
She made a few whites millionaires but she made a black guy president. She's also produced a long line of black films & broadway play. And her best friend Gayle is black.
Oprah is a self-aggrandized media hack, who plans to leave her show so that she can pursue her other major interest, eating. She is dang well no "prophet".
Put that in your pipe and smoke it Steadboy.
And Heaven knows that if Oprah had not sat down there, Chicago would have been just another little Mayberry-type town. Before Oprah, Chicago hand no historical role in this nation's history. Hey Stedman! Let the air out of that blowhole. She is an entertainer. That is all. Until she walks on water without using the likes of you and Phil as floaties, she is a very successful entrepeneur. But the be-all and end-all that makes Chicago what it is? I think there might be other opions.
To "hoss" Re: "heres a suggestion...how about all hard working...underappreciated white people leave this country and go back to europe...lets see how long they last without us."
BRILLIANT idea! If you'd STAYED in Europe, most of the world's current problems would've been averted. I'll pack your bags, moron. Natives would have lasted if you hadn't come along, idiot.
I must admit I love the woman and watch her every day. There's just something so upbeat and inspirational about her. I love her energy. She makes me want to be more productive.
First, she's not a prophet. Not even close. Second, she's self-centered and way too full of herself.
Peggy, you are right, he should have elaborated more on exactly what he'd like for Chicago to do. I'm not sure Oprah would be pleased with what he's said though because a genuine giver never expects anything but a thank you in return. I'm with you on that one...what does he want Chicago to do. Clarify that.
She can be appreciated with everyone kissing her you know what. There are thousands of philanthropists who do not seek praise. They quietly go about the work of greatness without the accolades. Be thankful she hooked up with you.
There are not thousands of philanthropists who give on the scale that Oprah does. She's one of the 50 most generous people in America according to Business Week
Pride goeth before a fall bi O!
She has zero presence in this City. When do you ever see her out at events in Chicago? She wasn't even here for the Precious movie premiere (although she was at the one in either NY or LA). Why are Chicagoans supposed to "appreciate" her for opening a school in Africa when our own schools are failing and kids are being killed in them. She opened her studio here in part because of the breaks the City gave her to begin with. Stedman needs to shut the hell up. If she actually contributed something to the betterment of the people living here not just some invisible financial impact that 99% of the people here don't feel, then I would think different but she is the most egotistical person in media. True "prophets" don't need their egos stroked.
I am a big Oprah fan. I watch her shows and read the books she recommends. I have sat transfixed as she interviews celebrities and other people. But my question is..."What exactly should Chicago do?" She gets plenty of cudos and recognition. As someone said – they shut down Michigan Avenue for 3 days for her. Have you ever been on Michigan Avenue??? That was a huge friggin deal!!! How can you measure appreciation? Stedman must be bored...
Gee, could it be that all of her "humanitarian" work is being done elsewhere? Like, in AFRICA? Oprah, give something to Chicago that's not all about you and maybe they will appreciate you. Until then, keep on living in California at Michael Jackson's Wacko Jacko ranch ... or wherever it is you live.
She is a big phony and preys on the weak and less fortunate , getting rich doing it.
Actually Oprah is the one show where even the guests become rich by promoting their books and careers. Other shows may exploit, but people volunteer and even beg to go on Oprah. I think she's fantastic.
I really don't like the reference to her being a "prophet" in her own town. She is not.
Oprah.....load of cr_p. Are'nt you all sorry you listened to her about Obama?
Funny thing is 99% of the people on here saying she hasn't done anything, or criticizing what she has done haven't even begun to do anything at all to improve their immediate world. They sit back and point fingers and pontificate but if you asked them to do squat diddly for Bo diddly they'd tell you "sorry, but I can't do it cause I'm too broke, drunk, ignorant, tired, busy or otherwise to do it". Why don't these whiners come and do even 1% of what Oprah has done on he worst day and then try to complain about what she hasn't done or has done to their disatisfaction. Ungrateful ingrates!
Wow! Assume much?
Not appreciated? Uh, I think she has a bank account that proves she is.
Well said.
Nobody cares about Oprah anyway...who puts their own picture on their magazine every month? What an ego...ugh.
She has exploited people and made millions doing it , I have no respect for her.
She hasn't exploited anyone. No one gets on her show unless they want to be there. News is what exploits people, by dragging people who want privacy into the headlines
Oprah has personally given over $300 million to charity despite being born and raised with little opportunity. I don't think anyone in history has come from so little to have given so much. If she were a white male she would be carved on Mount Rushmore. I love you Oprah!
Did you hear that Oprah was arrested today at OHare Airport.. She had 50 pounds of crack in her pants!!
Stuck on themselves much? You know for him to say this publicly they have talked about it a lot privately. Think God gave Oprah a anointing to reach and help people and she has used and abused it by being influenced by the enemy. Probably more then any human she has been used to hurt christianity and further new age emotional alchemy. Seriously if men were as angry and opinionated as her guest and herself she would tear into them. Look at her face and her nostrils she is a very fake person very angry and passive aggressive no one is treated good on her show that disagrees with her. If they are allowed on even but she plays for publicity like the James Fray incident when it first came out it was fiction she came out to support him but when public opinion was so against him she joined just a week or 2 after supporting him anyway. It was so fake she got so mad so sensed he betrayed her in so little time. No he was not welcome back cause Oprah isn't freandly to anyone that its a chance will mess up her image.
I wish she would just go away. cannot stand her.
My God.........Oprah a prophet????? When are you people going to realise the world does not revolve around the United States? This is all such bull, each time I look at this bull I could kick myself for even looking! Have any of you dropkicks even thought about the world community or are you so selfish and insular that it doesn't matter? Here is some truth from another country outside the U>S, All respect, but, the world does not revolve around the US. or the US individuals, more credit to you for believing this but here is a fact..................half the world doesn't care what you think!..........or can you think?????? as individuals?????????? The global community actually has a fairly low opinion of the US, regardless of what the US citizens think. The same as you, I believe that I live in the greatest country in the world! I don't really care about who has the greatest sporting heroes in the world, or who has the biggest army or whatever ( Although I can give you some instances here of why Australia is the best )..the majority is just a peeing contest..Who can pee the farthest? This garbage makes me sick!!!!! GROW UP!!!!!! The US comes across as just spoilt little kids to the outside world.......I would bet that it is a real shock that when you go to another country when customs stops you entering. Guess what? Not all of the world is interested in this crap!!!! And it DOES affect how everyone sees the US in the "outside" world ! If you really think that no one outside sees this, then think again. You make me sick to the stomach !
Andy, How did this article turn into an America bashing exercise? If you look at the comments, the vast majority are in disagreement with her ex. The problem here is that you listen to the comments of one guy and roll all of America into it. Foreign media loves to make us look like we are giant boobs, and some Americans are. I'm pretty sure that all countries have their share of idiots. You live on the other side of the world and rely on the media to tell you what is real.....and we are the morons. I will agree with you, AU is a beautiful country with a great economy and governmental structure. Unfortunately, the rest of your post holds no water since you obviously have lost the ability to think for yourself.
I think it unfortunate that he made those statements. That's not what Oprah is about. I don't believe she's looking for recognition from little Chicago when she's got the attention of the world. I love Oprah dearly and have watched her for years, but she most certainly is not a prophet. She is a facilitator that engages her guests in conversation. She learns life lessons right along with us.
For the person who keeps calling people ignorant. It's You're ignorant...not "your" ignorant, okay? There is nothing worse than someone trying to tell someone else that they are stupid when their own sh&t isn't right.
Wow Stedman is still alive? As I had not seen or heard of him in so long I thought he disappeared into oblivion where be belongs. However, I cannot believe he has the audacity to claim that Oprah is a prophet. First of all, a prophet is followed. No on follows Oprah. She has been doing shows for 20 years trying to teach women to stand up for themselves, to demand respect for themselves, and to be good mothers. Women are still dumb as hell letting men rule over them, and lets face it children today are more worthless than ever. And why is it if Oprah cares so much about women its two MEN who got their own shows because of her? She is no prophet, but rather just an angry black women spouting on a soapbox like a child trying to get attention. Its time for her to go and take this whiny pathetic man with her. Oh and one last thing...why should Chicago be thankful to Oprah because she opened a school in South Africa?
People certainly follow Oprah. She endorses a book; it's a best seller, she endorses Dr. Phil & Dr. Oz, they get hit shows, she endorses Obama, he becomes president. She is actually followed more closely than any religion, most of which have their scriptures twisted to justify oppression.
A sign of the times...and how out of touch and self-centered Americans can be. This country has turned into an "all about me" country. Orpah seems to be a good person...she obviously needs to get herself a man who isn't selfcentered...and self loathing... You do good things, and are a good person...because you want to be...not because you need recognition and stardom.
Its because of the audience she is what she is. Unfortunately they will not get a dime from her earnings. She will live the best retirement life ever while the rest of us who've wasted time watching her shows have to worry about not having enough left for retirement.
Why should the audience "get a dime from her earnings?" They got entertained by watching her show. That's the deal.
Do sports fans "get a dime" from the overpaid, spoiled thugs in the NFL? No. Do movie audiences get a dime from the stars? No.
She put on a show. People liked it, and wanted more, to the point where she became very well paid. It's called earning a living. No one handcuffed people and forced them to watch.
PS – maybe you should have spent less time watching her show and more time looking for a job.
OMG, are you serious? Are you making money right now from the internet while you're wasting your time posting on a blog? I'm with Ann, fans don't make money from the media they enjoy, they watch TV, movies, sports, surf the net or do whatever they because they like it. That someone beside you is making a profit from your form of entertainment is more your fault than theirs.
I think that she would be appreciated more if she would take some of that $1 billion dollars she has and actually invest in Chicago, like the homeless. Really Stedman, she's not appreciated? She needs that large head for the HUGE EGO she has.
Wow! What a bunch of haters on here. Oprah Winfrey is an amazingly uplifting and generous person. She's done a great deal of good for a lot of people over the years. Hate her or love her- it doesnt change a thing. And remember: its not anyone's business how she spends her money. She isn't obligated to share a dime here or abroad- so back off!
What it looks like most people are reading into the comments that this is negative against Oprah, well, go back to the story, it's about Chicago not appreciating Oprah enough. Oprah's done a good job both in business and her charity, but do you really think that is why she does it? For recognition? Most people do charity work aren't even recognized for their efforts, they don't do it for recognition. Saying Chicago doesn't appreciate her enough is like begging for attention, look what she's done, put her on a pedestal.
I love the woman. She creates jobs and has a show that's so upbeat and positive, plus she gives a lot to charity and pays a lot of taxes. What's not to like unless you're jealous, or don't like seeing a black woman get too much money and influence.
Do you really think she does all that she does, just for the recognition you say she so deserves? Let's look at it this way, who do you think deserves more recognition, Oprah, or a no-name Private First Class who was killed last week in Afghanistan? Oprah has received the recognition she so deserves. She's one rich woman. She's been recognized many times for other things she's done throughout the world. So, Chicago doesn't recognize Oprah enough. Oh well.
the only good thing she gave us was Nate Berkus. She can take Phil "Lets Get Real"McGraw, Oz, "let's look at that poop, Jenny "watch me be dopey" McCarthy and lets make a celeb out of Gayle because she is my friend even if she is boring, ........with her when she goes. And good riddance to all they have all stayed too long at the fair.
I suspect many on here bashing her support B/P's CEO.
Oprah is a self serving celebrity. Nothing more than that. She makes an insane amount of money and her charity work is a way for her to leverage her tax liability. Philanthropy is charity without any return. All of Oprah's charity work has been a tax write off. Bill Gates is a Philanthropist, Oprah is a Oportunist. Now, she is an incredible business woman, I will give her that. But when I watch her show and she has a great opportunity within an interview to do something amazing she blows it by making it all about herself. Everone is enamored by how rich she is, and she makes even more money by allowing people to oooooh and aaaahhh over her wealth. As for this article, she hasn't done a thing for Chicago without helping herself first. People here in Chicago couldn't care less about her. We get it, your rich. Nobody cares here. The rest of the world for some reason will travel thousands of miles to sit in her presence. It's truly sad.
Um, Jon? Do you really think Bill Gates doesn't write off his charitable contributions on his taxes, too? That's kinda the point of having that deduction, to encourage the wealthy to give.
You don't make any money off taxes by writing off charitable donations. You don't even break even. All you do is reduce your taxable income. So, if you give $1000 donation, and write it off, you reduce your income taxes by $350 (assuming you're in a 35% tax bracket). You still end up with $650 less than you would have had if you hadn't made the donation. Explain to me again how doing that makes someone selfish?
I don't understand the animosity towards Oprah at all. I'm sure many hate her because of her support for Obama. But she has had Palin and others on with opposing views and has been very respectful of them. she has brought a lot of issues to light, and let's face it, some of her shows like Dr. Oz have been very educational. I also like her phone free campaign for driving, too many are dying, especially young folks due to texting while driving. She is an asset to this country and we'd miss her a lot more than the sick of Oprah poster, maybe they shouldn't let the door hit them.
That thing should never have been put on T.V anyway, i mean what does she do Blah Blah Blah
STEADMAN....Maybe the South Africans will appreciate her for her donation. That's money out of here. Move there with her.
I am stunned by these comments... not one of you know these people = not one of you live with them – and most of you think freedom of speech means saying just absolutely any thing that comes to your head – NOT.. it means you can voice your opinion and have no fear of being punished by the government.. but, the sense of decency and human kinship should govern what falls out of your mouth.. fact are disregarded and people's reputations are destroyed on a daily basis .. ignorance and hatred share the same space.. Thanks Oprah for the fun and not so fun programs.. ya done good!
Maybe most dont appreciate her closet like she does...was that part of humanitarian work
Stedman, maybe if she had built one of those awesome schools in Chicago too she would be more appreciated. She could have used the money she spent to give her audience all new cars (can you say "Buying viewer loyalty") to maybe build a new shelter for mothers and the children of abusers or help the mothers get trained in a profession and dress them in some new clothes. Or instead of her piggish Xmas give aways to women sitting in their "Oh so perfect makeup and clothes" in the audience she could have set up 2 or 3 more soup kitchens for the homeless. REALLY STEDMAN PROPHET, good marketing thats all it is. Look back at who she gave stuff too, middle to upper class white (and I am white) woman who would make her rich.
Okay, Janey, we get it. Your favorite kind of charity has to do with homeless shelters. Good for you; that's a very worthy cause.
That doesn't mean that giving to something else is a bad thing. You give to the homeless shelters, I'll give to my favorite charities, and everybody else, including Oprah, can do the same. Okay?
And trust me, Nashville could still use a big flood relief check from one of its most famous citizens. The city is still a wreck.
HE DOESN'T APPRECIATE HER EITHER
WHO IS HE KIDDING
I cannot believe some of the comments stated here. Bottom line: it's Oprah's money, and what she does with it is her business and nobody else. If you don't like her show, magazine, then don't watch or read. She does not owe me anything. As an American, I can honestly say, "we have a chance", the children in Africa do not. Most of you are just angry that she is a "WEALTHY AFRICAN AMERICAN".
Oprah doesn't much appreciate her hometown, either. I see her travel the globe doing charity work and in my 2 decades living in Nashville, have never heard of her giving one dime to any cause. Considering she can't blow her nose without issuing a press release, I'm confident she's never donated any money here behind the scenes, either.
I like the comments here. I thought I was the only one on the planet who couldn't stand that blowhard.
Oprah doesn't need to open a school in the USA. Kids here have access to free education right through high sch & then grants & student loans for college. Every American kid who wants to learn CAN learn. I'm an immigrant from the "third world" & was absolutely amazed at how much advantage kids here have. There were days when I couldn't go to sch back home because there's no bus fare or lunch money. In America that's all FREE!! The best thing Oprah can do is help the truly disadvantaged kids of the world & not the spoiled brats walking around in expensive sneakers & with flat backpacks.
Thanks for the perspective. I'm amazed at the greedy commenters who don't seem to understand that there are people in the world who, through no fault of their own, lack basic necessities that we take for granted.
Oprah wasn't given her success on a silver platter. She started from the bottom, worked hard, and succeeded. She has no obligation to give anyone a cent of the money SHE earned, and yet she's given millions. Good for her.
Seriously Stedman, we made her a millionaire. Isn't that enough, go home and help her count her money BWAH BWAH
How sad that Chicago hasn't erected a monument to a woman that has marketed herself and her mag and everything else into millions.
Let me see, oh no I am sorry I don't have any pity left. It is being used up for the soldiers and their families in Iraq, the hate being generated in this country by the right wing Repubs, the sad ecological state of the Gulf of Mexico. Seriously
do you want her to have a parade when she retires, get serious DUDE. Do something worthwhile with your time.
The only difference between her ego and her weight is that her ego has consistently gotten bigger over the years while her weight has fluctuated!! She needs to move on and I suggest she moves to out of the country.
Oprah does more to promote racism than anyone I can think of, except Obama....
Oprah,
Go have a nice retirement. Count your millions on top of your high thread count sheets on all of your tropical paradises. Please just go away! Don't forget to take all of your groupies with you! I would be happy to never hear anymore advise from you about subjects you know nothing about such as relationships, marriage, and children.
Lets also not forget, that all the charity work she's been doing, also comes with HUGE tax exemptions for her ....
Not really. She's given over $300 million to charity. They only let you deduct a small fraction of that
Aren't the billions of dollars she's received indication of how she's appreciated? Jesus, she's so insecure...
Does Chicago appreciate anyone?
Using the name 'Oprah' and the word 'prophet' in the same sentence out of Stedman's mouth made me throw up a little in my mouth. Puhleez....
A PROPHET??? He must be joking! Oprah is far from prophet and far from perfect. Yes, she has helped out Chicago with taxes and tourists...but what HAS she done for Chicago? It's her money, I agree, but if you think about it, she isn't as generous as people think she is. If you see the money she puts into charities and overseas, it is pocket change. If you want to make a positive change in the world you should start with your own neighborhood. Chicago owes her NOTHING. Just go away Oprah, take Gayle with you.
Oprah's given over $306 million of her own hard earned money to charity, making her the only black and only performer on Business Week's list of America's 50 greatest philanthropists:
http://bwnt.businessweek.com/interactive_reports/philanthropy_individual_2008/?chan=magazine+channel_special+report
Oprah a prophet?...... the same lady that said there were many ways around Jesus to get to the father?.. ... ...
You're all worthless and weak. Now, where the hell is my fried chicken? I'm HUNGRY!!!!!!!!!!
He is just angry and frustrated, he wants to stay in Chicago, she wants to move and she doesn't care what he wants.
Les, while I disagree that Chicago and the rest of the world do appreciate what Oprah has done, I think it is a bit immature and less than human to "hate" her. Imagine if someone hated you without really knowing who you are. I am a fan of the show, although I do not watch it as much as I used to. I also agree that the time has come for the show to end. It's not the end of the world. We say we don't care, but we take the time to respond. Hmmmmmm!
I worked for a major airline at DFW airport for many years. Oprah would arrive at a gate with her "personal assistant" and if the agent began to address her, her assistant would promptly butt in, and say "you will not address Miss Winfrey, you will address me". Oprah would turn her back to the counter as the assistant would speak. We all have our bad days and at that level of popularity, I can image how fan intrusion could be draining. But this happened on several occaisions. Actions speak much louder than words. And my actions have been to change channels whenever she is visable.
There's no one I admire more than Oprah. She's a brilliant, talented, hardworking genius who overcame so much to create thousands of jobs, pay hundreds of millions in taxes, give hundreds of millions to charity, and she achieved it all through hosting a show that shattered so many taboos, got America reading and above all, beamed positive energy into our negative cynical world. I think she's one of the greatest Americans of all time.
I for one am sick of Oprah and feel that while she at times has used her power to do good things, she abused her power and influence when she publicly humiliated the author James Fray. I also believe she is a racist. She publicly endorsed Obama, but has never before publicly endorsed other Presidential candidates. Her speeches about Obama during the campagn were all about making history with the first black President and little focus on why he was the best candidate. I am looknig forward to 2011. She needs to move on.
I admired her for confronting James Frey face to face on live TV and holding him accountable for telling lies. More media needs to hold dishonest guests accountable. And endorsing Obama doesn't make her a racist. She gave whites (i.e. Dr Oz) their own talk show.
I'm laughing at all of the comments here. If the world really hated Oprah as much as is stated here, she wouldn't have won all of the emmy's, or held out for 25 years as she has. The woman must be doing something right! We the public, have kept her in business for a quarter of a century, by turning on our TV sets and watchng her. Give it a rest!
Let's not forget Oprah made tons of money mostly from getting vunerable people on her show, paying them to appear on her show and getting them to answer all the questions she throws at them. On the other hand, she never talks about her personal issues to reporters. I think it should work both ways. Not to forget, she's thick pals with the Obama's. Gale and she waltz in and out of the white house like its their own..
Actually Oprah doesn't pay anyone to be on her show. But they sell a lot of books by going on.
Did weetle Stedman lose his weetle pacifier? Bit your quitchin, there's more imporant things going on in Chicago than Oprah leaving.
Don't worry Stedman, Oprah appreciates herself enough to make up for it...
Amen! Well put. The only difference between her ego and her weight is that her ego has consistently gotten bigger over the years while her weight has fluctuated!! She needs to move on and I suggest she moves to out of the country.
Im fascinated that Steddy is sticking up for Oprah AFTER ALL THIS TIME... where the heck has he been? Now, for peeps not appreciating Oprah for WHO SHE IS.... we didnt know who she was til we read Kitty Kelleys book. Now: what exactly should we appreciate?
Frankly Steddy: i am appalled at your statement. Oprah is the biggest name in the world! whats not to appreciate? And also, if Kittys book is to be believed, Oprah is a bit of a control freak and for the City of Chicago to try to honor or celebrate her .... well, goodness, how many disclosures would have to be signed? Vows of silence to be made in blood? You see the problem there, yes?
I stopped believing anything Kitty Kelley writes when she wrote that Frank Sinatra book where the source she claimed to have interviewed was dead in the year she claimed to have interviewed him. The woman is a liar with deep issues.
Most people are arguing about whether or not Oprah has done enough for the city of Chicago, which is kind of beside the point of the article. No matter how much good the woman has done, to imply that the city, which has been incredibly accommodating (hello, close down the Magnificant Mile for her?), has not been appreciative enough, and further, to imply that Chicago will be hurting when she leaves, is insulting to the very people who have supported her. Yes, people come in to the city to see her show, but that is hardly the lion's share of Chicago's tourists. It's a drop in the bucket. Oprah did not make this city, she's been a very high profile citizen, but she's not why the vast majority of people come to Chicago. I'm glad this didn't come from her, I think she's too savvy a business woman to kick her host city in the teeth for no good reason. And if she does feel this way, it's better that she's leaving. We'll miss her, sentimentally, but the city won't be hurting.
totally in agreement with adam. oprah is for people who don't have a mind and/or opinion of their own. she's just a person not someone who dictates policies or procedures. and, OMG, "a prophet"! what was he thinking?
those 2 deserve each other
To all the Oprah haters out there...Oprah did not make this comment, Stedman did. All these nasty comments are not necessary. It goes to show where your hearts really are. Regardless of what you feel or think, it has no impact on who Oprah is and how she lives her life. Oprah has and I'm sure, will continue to make contibutions to who ever and what ever she wants. She has inspired & helped many people , your nasty and distasteful comments will not change that!!! So please, think before you speak and it wont hurt you ALL to be a little kinder you each other. People like you are the reason the world is in the shape it's in now. God Bless!!!!!!!
Read Kitty Kelley's book. According to the book, Oprah is not all that some think she is.
Read the unauthorized biography of Kitty Kelley "Poison Pen" by George Carpozi Jr. According to the book, Kelley is a thief and a liar who writes books full of fabrications.
I hate reading garbage like this from yet another celebrity worshiping cretin. Oprah and her overpaid celebrity brethren are doing more to contribute to this countries slide than anyone. I have a friend who is a junior high science teacher that does more for kids in a single semester than Oprah can ever hope to do with all her millions. Her South African school is a perfect example...she opens the thing to great fanfare and then goes on her way, most of the kids to attend are not disadvantaged youth from the shantytowns, but kids and relatives of the government elite. It's sad that all these insecure, self hating housewives contribute to her celebrity.
We do "good" things because we want to, not because we want to be recognized for our good deeds. It is called being humble. I might add that it is easy to do good things when you are a billionaire; there is no sacrifice involved. So, Stedman I hope that you are wrong...I hope that Oprah is doing her good deeds with a humble heart...she will get her kudos in heaven!
Who cares what stedman thinks? As a matter of fact, who cares what oprah thinks?
To that end, who cares what YOU think?
The people made Oprah what she is. They made her rich, they made her show a hit. The city should appreciate Oprah??? Are you kidding me? She should throw a party for her readers, listeners and supporters. She could still be a dirt farmer in Mississippi if it wasn't for the fans.
Amen Stedman!
Michael Jackson even has new fans......
Only in America......
Oprah's time has come and gone. She did NOTHING! But she is fat and very rich. How much more appreciation does she need?
listen steady baby, Oprah is a household name, you can't change what she has done for Chicago and others, what's done is done and stop looking for more recognition and glory, as i understand when you do a good deed, you don't go out and shout from every roof top HEY..look what I have done! You do good, help your fellow man, deposit the money, (haha) and then you move on, stop asking for more glory for your gal pal Mr. Steadman it looks ugly and pridefilled. don't take two steps forward and five steps back.
THIS country was in trouble BEFORE Obama!!! Do your history schmuck!
Don't know Oprah...don't care either. I am happy, though, that she is in Chicago because we already have enough lunatics and bleeding heart liberals here in California.
If Stedman seemingly appreciates Oprah sooooo much, why doesn't he marry her?
Dude....get a job!
Dude....you can suck it too.....Oprah is the biggest attention (W) hore America has to offer. Good bye...Good Riddence...
no dude, you suck! :-)~
Oprah can suck a big fatty....
Who cares! Oprah is not a Lakers fan. Go Kobe !!!
Oprah is a living legend. To do what she has done as an AA women in this country. Wow! I'm not a big fan but you have to respect what she's meant to people around the world. And she carries herself with dignity and class. You don't have to agree with her opinions but you should respect the way she delivers it. To call her a 'powerhouse' in the world is a major understatement. I cannot think of another woman in our society over the past 50 years that I respect as much as she.
Please give me a break. Oprah does what she does because she wants people to bow to her and not other reason. The people she has helped NEEDED her and now they are paying dearly for it. If they say anything other than they love her they will be out of work. Everyone Oprah has endorsed I have refused to watch, listen to or care what they say. They are on TV only because she wants more and more followers, this is the only way she can get them. People are honestly sick of her. I can form my own opinions and I do not have to go on national TV and let everyone know "some of my favorite" things, like $1000 tee shirts. Go home Oprah
Nancy,
I agree with you about what the US school system has produced.
Haters,
In defense of Oprah, she does give a lot of money to educational causes in this country. There are stellar educational programs that are working very well in terms of providing core education and Oprah has given to these organizations and highlighted their efforts and successes by having them on her show. Oprah is a good woman and has shared a lot, with all of the lame criticism directed towards, the world would still be a better place if more people in this world demonstrated her spirit in theri day-to-day lives.
Oprah, I love you; I don't watch your show often, but I know something about you...God bless you!
you know what they say "why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free?" Quit pointing fingers Stedman.
To Les @ 10:43... yeah Les we all really miss the booming economy that W left.
Like we should believe a FOX News spokesman? NO WAY
Really? Who does he think he is to say Chicago doesn't appreciate her? He is holed up in his big house, with his big lady and complains about everything. Spoiled brat!
The revenue her show generates for her also generates tourism income directly and indirectly for Chicago. People are employed at her business, stores are shopped at, hotels benefit, airline tickets are purchased for guests and show attendees. She pays taxes there, people eat at the restaurants there etc.. She has and is doing a lot for Chicago and improving its reputation. It's also great she has opened a school in Africa. Stedman was airing his opinion, so are you here. The problem is you forgot to think through the realities...
She is not a prophet. She is just a fat cow who got other fat cows to watch her ridiculous show.
So let's see ... "fat cows" are somehow worth less than all other people. Do you hate fat people or women or just fat women? Does it make you feel superior because you aren't in these categories? I'm not an Oprah fan, but if I had to pick between her "live your best life" solipcism and your mean-spirited trash talk, I know where I'd land.
Are you kidding me? We got a war going on, an enviromental dissaster with the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, people loosing their homes, and this nut head is worried about his lover not being appreciated. Get a life! he is living out there in pluto land. Who care about a stupid show. That is so O!
Wow. We never hear from this guy and he comes out calling her a "prophet"? Wow.
And the people don't appreciate her enough? What do you want them to do? Throw a parade? One does humanitarian work because it's the right thing to do, not to gain accolades and attention for oneself.
I'm surprised at some of the shallow commentary here. Oprah, you should have come to Philly instead of Chicago. Philly, the surrounding counties, the Poconos, Delaware, South Jersey and on down to Baltimore – we would give you all the appreciation you deserve and then some Ms. Winfrey. We treat our heroes well here.
There's still time =] c'mon over!
So I was dreaming when I was stationed on the east coast in 1982 when she hosted AM Philadelphia? Get your facts straght!!!
She never worked in Philadelphia. She worked in Baltimore from 1978 until 1984, on a show called "People Are Talking, She moved to Chicago to do AM Chicago. The rest, as they say, is history.
OH my gosh. Are these comments serious. People are so ignorant and rude. Oprah is only doing what is right so people who hate. . .need to get off the internet make a difference themselves.
Dont make comments about other people when you arent doing anything yourselves.
Dont let the door hit you in the butt when you leave...
I don't watch Oprah because I am at work at that time. I amy not like how she has become a bit arrogant, but I am also not in her shoes and understand the world of being a celebrity. I do believe that she has done an excellent job educating people, especially women. She created conversations, which then made people form opinions.
We all have free will. She did not force anyone to vote for Obama. I voted for Obama to void any chance of having Sarah Palin, bottom line.
Want to know how I know Oprah is so awesome? She tells me so everytime she opens her mouth.
@Megs . . .awesome comment!
All of you need to stop and think about all of the things that she has given away to her audience members. Whether it be cars, paying off their mortgage, giving scholarships to high school students for college, etc... she has done plenty for the people of the United States of America, but no one is appreciative of it or remembers it.
"She's not appreciated".......said the most whipped enuch in the history of mankind.
I have never in my life read such garbage - hatred, ugliness...By the way, Oprah was in Baltimore - not Philly - before she went to Chicago. My guess is that no one who wrote comments knows either Stedman or Oprah, then you don't actually know why they do anything. You haven't talked to them to ask them. Your opinions do not seem to be based on facts. She may do many things without publicity. How would you know????
The educational system in the U.S. has produced some ugly, mean-spirited, illiterate and ignorant people.
Stedman needs to thank god for his sugar mama, and keep his mouth shut,
Years ago, I was a huge Oprah fan. With her Book Club, she inspired not only me, but thousands of other people, to get back to reading. I stopped recording her show when she started acting like her "stuff" didn't stink. It's no secret that she's the richest woman in the world, use that power to inspire and motivate, not to treat your viewing audience, the one's that made you, in a condescending manner. I could care less how she spends her money, but, referring to her as a prophet is just ludicrous.
LOl.... .... cmon...we are all selfish and we should appreciate more often and criticize others less....
When you do humanitarian work abroad, you do it becuase your heart tells you to do it, not becuase there is something to gain in your hometown – Obviously, Operah's ego is speaking to us through Opera – she feels undervalued and under appreciated which is why she is using Stedman for the tool that he is!
Chicago is a great city and will do very well on it's own without Oprah, thank you.
Seriously? She is a freaking talk show host, not god. Anyone can become a "humanitarian" when they have a billion dollars to work with. Wow.
She didn't start out a billionaire. She overcame adversity and worked hard for the money she so generously gives away.
Isn't the point of being a generous and giving person so that you give to others, not that you should receive accolades for doing so. I'm sure she does support local charities but she shouldn't expect compliments or praise for it.
All humans like appreciation and to know they are valued. Nothing wrong with that.
There are some serious haters here. Geez, people. He may have worded it poorly, but give credit where credit is due. Unless you've done what she has done, then shut up.
I find it interesting that she had never publicly endorsed a presidential candidate until Obama '08. Racist?
Maybe she should get a raise
The reason Stedman has not married Oprah is because he is the worst kept secret in all of show business. How many men stay "engaged" to someone for over 25 years. He is a paid employee and she is gay. Oprah does not fool anyone anymore which is why she is leaving. She was wonderful in Philly and still great early on in Chicago but became way to big for herself and thinks she can "spin" us to beleive anything. Gay women.....always has been.
There's not really any evidence she's gay. She didn't marry Steadman because she's a billionaire & it's dumb to get married when you have that much money because divorce gets really expensive. She was also with many many men prior to Steadman. The gay rumour about Oprah only started because she played the therapist when Ellen came out of the closet in her controversial 1998 sitcom. But just because Rosie and Ellen are gay does not mean Oprah is. It's possible to be a champion talk show hostess witjhout being a lesbian.
Sorry, but Oprah never worked in Philadelphia. She worked in Baltimore before moving to Chicago in 1984. You're probably thinking of Lisa Thomas-Laury. She was on the morning show in Phildelphia from 1978 to 1983.
AND I AM GLAD JULIA SUGARBAKER IS DEAD!
Robert, Karma is a bi+ch. You should be careful what you say because karma always finds a way. I hope you find your way to becoming a better human being.
@Robert, dude, you do know that Julia Sugarbaker isn't a real person. @Jamie, all your comments suggest you should be working at being a better human being yourself.
I DID NOT APPRECIATE HER ENDORSING OBAMA. SHE SHOULD HAVE ENDORSED HILLARY CLINTON. NOW WE ARE STUCK.
REYDON... Ms. Julia Sugarbaker would like to give you a piece of her mind... again!
Les, your ignorant.
He's right, you know. Imagine the dip Chicago's economy will take when there are no longer throngs of women traveling to that city just to be in her audience.
Who cares about Oprah? She doesn't do anything but sit on her pile of money and show up for photoshoots for her magazine cover every month. She has a ton of people trained to do her will and a ton of other people to spin everything she says to make it seem Godly, and a horde of mindless followers who will believe everything they see or hear from her. If you believe that woman is hardworking and does anything but get out of bed in the morning I'd like to sell you the Golden Gate Bridge. A value to tourism, economy and publicity, of course. A value to humanity, not a chance.
I am destined to be her successor, I know that. She´s amazing, and I will do everything in my power to maker her proud.
Check me out http://www.isatraverso.com
Oprah is not a prophet. She is more like a high-payed masseuse. She massages the American psyche and releases all the toxins into the airwaves of t.v. land, forcing people to deal with their emotional toxicity by buying whatever she advertises.
Well I guess you have to stand by your man....
SHE IS A FREAKIN TALK SHOW HOST, she is one good producer away from Jerry for cryin outloud!!!
Oprah has become very rich with her show and her influence
Yeah, I started skimming the article, realize that nope, I don't really care. It happens more often than not on CNN.com At that point I usually just scroll down to read the insane comments people leave!!
Chicago doesn't apprecaite her..kinda like you do??? Then marry her already or sit down and shut the hell up. READY for her to go...
Did he really just refer to Oprah as a PROPHET! This guy is more off his rocker than Oprah herself! Yes, she's done a lot of charity. I applaud her for that, but so has Bill Gates! To those whom much is given, much is expected. That's life, 'Steady', get real! And the rest of them didn't sack us with Obama for 4 long years.....yeah, thanks Oprah, thanks a lot.
My respect for Steadman just went way up. Oprah has been invaluable to Chicago's economy, publicity, and tourism. I like a man who knows how valuable his woman is and is man enough to demand she get every bit of respect she deserves. When you're African American & female & overweight, they don't just give you the respect you are owed, you have to DEMAND it. That's exactly what Steadman did for his black woman and he is a role model for black males everywhere.
. . . interested in Oprah at times, but not a fan. She is undeniably a huge success on many levels and so with the great philanthropy, comes some self-serving returns as well. I admire her strength as a business woman. Having skin of color is a non-issue to me, however I believe it created more distance and hurdles to cover as she was on the rise. Oprah's career path is nothing short of stand-alone remarkable. She has my respect and deserves to be honored for what she has accomplished. Not many people (of any description) have.
Stedman, as a smart business person and especially so close to Oprah, should know better than to convey publicly anything less than graciousness and support. I bet their private dinner conversation was interesting that night. Oprah to Stedman: "What we you thinking? Keep your comments between us and don't do me any PR non-favors. Leave that work up to Gayle."
Certainly Stedman's interview could have been more gracious from one so close to her. Leave the biting controversey to others in her PR machine.
If you're not doing anything in your community, put your stones on the ground.
Boy, it's some serious HATERS on this site. You people are so sad.
She doesn't appreciate her own home state ...why should a city appreciate her??? she has made billions of of them anyways.....just seems like she is a bit ungrateful
Oprah is NOT a prophet....nor a "GOD" like some people believe.....
She obviously doesn't appreciate herself, otherwise, she wouldn't weigh 300 pounds.
Austin, you're a chauvinist pig.
mmmmmmm, I LOVE applesauce with my chauvinist pig. FEEEDD MEEEEE!!!
I'm am so sick of Oprah, I'm sick of her telling everyone how to live, to believe, to be spiritual and how to lose weight .... that's a good one, have you seen her lately???
Louise, I am sure she looks better than you. I can picture the face of a boar on your head.
A Prophet? This guy MUST be joking.
I have been a Chicagoan my entire life....40 years......and THIS white women thinks Oprah is a RACIST! She can't be "gone" soon enough for me! And I think she is arrogant toward black women too........seriously.
no one could take you serious... honestly
She lost my respect when she goes and builds a school in Africa, when Chicago schools are suffering. Also, she should feed the poor instead of having karaoke contests, producing stupid shows for non-dr's and giving away free cars.
Why is it up to Oprah to fix Chicago schools? A lot of the problem with the schools isn't just their infrastructure but the families that don't encourage their kids to take advantage of any sort of education. Most kids want a shortcut to a good life, they could care less if they were given a good school; they'd rather have material things.
As for the cars, yes, that was GM that gave those cars away, but I don't think any other show came up with that idea. As if you would have complained if someone gave you a car. Not only would you take it, but you wouldn't care who gave it to you.
oprah is racist.
and bill, your ignorant.
My opinion of Chicago just went up a notch.
After reading all of these comic, i thing that you peoples are just upset because she has more than you, leave her along whatever she has ,she work for it and she help peoples all over the world, it is her money, she can do what she wants to do with it.
Exactly...all these people on here calling her far, and racist, etc, they are all just jealous because they go to their 10 dollar an hour job and admire what Oprah has. Its sick.
@Jamie....you're right. We are jealous because shis fat and she is a racist and she continues to make millions of dollars for having no discernable talent. I have no discernable talent either so where the hell are MY millions?
Jules – thank you for proving salleyl's point
@sheppard.....what's your point? I mean, other than the fact that you don't comprehend sarcasm.
Oprah doesn't need anyone to appreciate her-she loves and appreciates herself enough. I'm sorry-what is the name of the school that she opened in South Side Chicago to educate and empower inner-city youth?? Oh, my bad-it's in South Africa, where they appreciate her.
What Oprah has done for the economy and tourism industry in Chicago is more valuable than building 100 schools.
And why should Chicagoans care that Oprah built a school in Africa? Just HOW does that help them??
Lets all take in consideration that Steadman said this and not Oprah. We don't know if Oprah really feels this way. As far as we know she might be pleased with the way Chicago has treated her and Steadman might be opening his mouth without her knowledge. Just a thought.
Did he just say PROPHET?!?! Oh no. This is just sad.
I don't think Oprah has ever appreciated Chicago enough. Chicagoan's put her on the map. Chicago city government rolled out the red carpet for her studio facility development (tax breaks, zoning exceptions, etc). Yet she's invisible on the local level.
Oprah showed her appreciation for Chicago by staying there for the entire quarter century her show has been on the air, even though the weather is way better in LA and its ten times easier to book celebrities. Without Oprah Chicago would be fly over country as celebrities made their way from New York to LA, but Oprah located the most influential TV show of all time in Chicago and made Chicago a MANDATORY stop for all the world's biggest celebrities and luminaries & created a creative media industry there where little had existed before. Millions of people have come to Chicago just to see Oprah, see her studio, press comes to cover her, and her studio stimulated what used to be a slum and single handedly transformed into a thriving urban area. She's created THOUSANDS of jobs in Chicago over the last quarter century and stimulated countless businesses. Even other talk shows like Jerry Springer and Jenny Jones located in Chicago just in hopes that some of the Oprah majic would rub off on them & they too created countless jobs. She's brought in BILLIONS and BILLIONS (if not trillions) of dollars worth of publicity and tourism for the city if you add it all up over quarter century she's been there.
Oprah do not owe Chicagoans anything and Chicagoans don't owe Oprah. It is her money and she can do what she want with it – so stop play hating. Whether she is on the air or off the air – she will still be Oprah. Stedman was just having a senior citizen's moment, if you live long enough you will have them too (LOL).
Life is a gift given by God! So that is who we owe and must appreciate!
Yes, Oprah does many great things, I don't think anyone can truly disagree with that. To me though, she showed her true ego years ago when she had a night in honour of legendary African Americans whom she admired, had them all wear black and white and then showed up in a brilliant RED dress herself – so really who was the night about? That was it for me – I do watch her show from time to time for the subject matter but I find it really tedious when she interrupts the experts with her own 'expertise' – if you wanted them as experts on the subject, let them talk!
O.......M.........G
It's no wonder Oppie has an enormous ego. Steddy thinks she's a prophet!!!!!!
Whatever Steddy is smoking, it's got to be illegal.
Goodbye Oh Holy Prophet.....
Maybe Oprah should consider pumping those millions of dollars of hers into the Chicago slums instead of spending it on that girl's school in AFRICA! Duh.
Right!!!...pump money in Chicago slums so they can waste whatever recourses she sends...it wouldn’t be appreciated and would never be enough.
I believe in helping people that understand the value, and would appreciate the help given. Just because she’s wealthy doesn’t mean that she needs to be wasteful of her hard earned money.
It's her money; that makes it her decision what to do with it. Whether that is opening a school in Africa or in the USA, she has the right to choose. So stop judging her by not opening a school in Chicago; what have YOU done?
Is That why she does it? For recognition? That's classy. People who REALLY do things for other people don't expect recognition, nor do they want it.
A prophet has no honor in their hometown? So now Oprah is right up there with Jesus? I don't think so!
I don't believe that for one second. Everyone especially people who live in Chicago admire this woman and what she has contributed to our society. Say what you want about this woman but in my opinion anyone who brings reading back into Vogue, opens a all girls school in Africa, donates the sales of her wardrobe to various charities and many more things is a very STYLISH woman.
http://www.thethrifters.net
"Vogue" is a magazine. "vogue" may be what you're looking for. And, it would be "an all girls school".
I LOVE OPRAH! I have been watching her show since Jr. High and she has truly evolved over the years. Stedman is right. Chicago isn't that great anyway. The weather sucks, it's too crowded, and overpriced.
I personally think that Oprah did not play any selfish acts when it comes to developing a school in Africa.
Us Americans are not appreciative for the things that we currently have. There's a lot of people outside of our country that never received an education throughout their whole lives, due to the lack of schools around their area. So now Stedman trying to get on Oprah about not giving back to her town? Stedman sounds very selfish. The word "Need" has more priority than the word "Want". Africa "Needs" while America "Wants". You do the math.
I am a Chicagoan and proud of Oprah and what she has done. She has brought a lot of good attention to this city. But I am very surprised that Oprah feels she needs more adulation.
Oprah has a HUGE ego....the only other person who has a larger ego is Obama.......at least Oprah has done something for people..........
what a moronic post
A HUGE ego to go with my HUGE BUTT. I'M HUNGRY!!!!!!!!!!!!
shes just a talk show host with a big mouth!!!!!!!!!!!!
Harpo has an ego the size of Jupiter.
Keep D good work Going
When Oprah first came to Chicago, she was welcomed made to feel at home by all Chicagoans. We don't owe her anything, She gets paid very well for who she is, "A TELEVISION PERSONALITY" and that's all. This hail to the queen bit he wants us to do will never happen, if she thinks it's time to move by all means go and god bless on the way out. Whatever she does for others should be kept private and between her and God. Only he can reward you like no human can. Chicago is a great city and was doing very well before she arrived and will continue to soar when she leaves, don't believe it go ask Michael Jordan.
Natalie
Is he really referring to Oprah as a prophet? LOL
reydon
Of course not. That is simply a "general" saying....oh , and since you take things "literal, I'm not saying he is a general. ......
That was truly the best response to her comment that I could want to see. Some times we can be so naive in our speaking until we can appear just plane stupid. I know no one is really stupid here so I'll just thank you for the humor. I needed a good laugh today... so I thank you guys for that was a really good one ...thanks.
Stedman, are you trying to suggest that Oprah needs MORE praise and attention? Should they erect a statue in her honor? Create Oprah day, and make it a national holiday? Should they find the biggest mountain and carve her face into? Yes, Oprah has fame and money, and she has used them in a positive way. She has helped people from all over the world, given to charities, and supported humanitarian work.
But if you feel that we should get on our knees and thank her, you are wrong. As a matter of fact, it sort of defeats the purpose of doing humanitarian work, if you need people to aknolwedge how selfless and humble you are. But she is still just a celebrity, who became famous by being a talk show host, get over it man.
Don't you people get it. Steadman has always been Oprah's front man. They never intended to marry. Oprah will probably end up living with Gail for the rest of her life as I believe she is gay. She could care less about Chicago. She lives in Santa Barbara with the movie stars. I'm a gay white male and hear she loves gay people, especially drag queens; but she tends to ignore people of her own race. I think she needs to get professional help.
Oprah doesn't ignore people of her own race. The best friend you accuse her of being gay for is black. The man she campaigned to make president is black. The 300 daughters she's raising at her school in Africa are black. The movies & broadway plays she's produced are all black.
Ok Sted! STHU!! People love Oprah and they certainly appreciate her. She has followers allllllll over the world. If she comes, they follow. She says read a book and we do it.... There are No Phone Zones signs everywhere. People in Chicago love and appreciate her. What have you done for her? Do you appreciate her? Her fans dont think you appreciate her...... If you did, she'd be Mrs. Graham!!!! Puh leeeez!!!!
She is self serving and a bore .
Hi Camille, I live in Canada and I've watched the Oprah show on and off whenever I can catch it. In the 1990's when I was in College, I had to do a paper on someone whom I admire. I chose Oprah for the simple reason that she was the only black woman on television with an intelligent program agenda that caught my interest. Her topics most of the times are interesting and thought provoking. Being a mother with a young daughter, I wanted to purchase a black barbie doll. for her and I could not find one because at that time they either did not have or weren' t in Canada. One day Oprah had this lady on her talk show and she was the person who initially created the black barbie. The next time that I was in my neighborhood retail store I mentioned to the store manager if the store can carry the black barbie and they did. So, I was able to purchase one for my daughter. Now, if it wasn't for that show, I would not have been able to get one for my daughter, who was four years old at the time. One has to understand that Oprah is a black woman living in the United States, a country that is very contraversial in terms of black and white. She cannot afford to show favoritism. You have to remember that Oprah is a very smart business woman as well. Remember Orsinio Hall (I hope that I spelt his name correctly), where is he today? He was not subtle in his actions and topics on his talk show as a black man in the public eyes. Again, please remember that America is black and white with issues regarding both races. If Oprah were to be the kind of person that most of the contributors to this topic would like her to be she would have already become like Orsenio Hall. Does any one of you happen to read what Jamie Foxx said that Oprah said to him in order for him to be successful what he should do and how he should act? if not, please try and find it and read it. Oprah does give to black and white America, but she does it SMARTLY. Just imagine if she were to focus only on Chicago? Then, Brooklyn, for example, would be complaining. Remember guys, she cannot please everyone and as long as she is happy and her conscience is clear I think that is what matters. Imagine yourselves in Oprah's place and have to make decisions such as, how should I proceed, who should I help, how will it be received, am I doing the right thing etc. I am happy that I do not have those decisions to make. It is so very easy to criticize, until it is us who have to make those decision knowing full well that some people will receive it positively and others won't. I guess it is just human nature to judge. But it is all good. I am sure that she knows that she just won't please everyone, however, she does her best.
Oprah may the Good Lord Bless You in so many ways for staying on the path that he has chosen for you. It's not about the money or fame for those who think it is. It is about giving back to those who need help. Wake up America!
Appreciation Stedman? You're the one who hasn't married her.
She is so smart, when I think of her I think maybe i should get of the computer and read a book.
Smart or clever? I would put her IQ at average. But she is able to pull off some interesting topics. When will she come out of the closet with Gayle and Steadman, you could do MUCH better.
I think she's absolutely brilliant to have completely dominated a field as competetive & improvisational as TV talk shows for a quarter century & becoming both the richest African American of all time and the most influential woman in the world in the process.
If you need a talk show host to get you inspired to read a book, then you're pretty pathetic.
Can we only imagine what the world would be like if all these people that are sitting in judgment of what Oprah has or has not done did a fraction of what she's done for just one person in the world. Besides, why are you judging her on something her partner says?
I am certain that she has done some wonderful things, but she needs positive reinforcement? You need that in order to want to do something good for someone else when you have the means? Wow. That's weak character. I am sure she has received more than sufficient accolades anyways. Please don't make it sound as if no one has ever noticed. Honestly, there are average people out there who will never be heard of or have fame for their work and what they give.
True heroism is remarkably sober, very undramatic.
It is not the urge to surpass all others at whatever cost,
but the urge to serve others at whatever cost....Arthur Ashe.
Ry, i completely agree with you.
What a beautiful quote. I think it sums up everything we all should be thinking.
Texans love Oprah 😉
If you're doing good deeds to receive praise and worship, please don't do them at all...and please don't feel sorry for a billionaire. There are more pressing issues people...
I don't think Oprah does good deeds just for the praise and worship, but what's wrong with expecting some well deserved praise? She's certainly earned it, and the more praise we give people for doing good deeds, the more good deeds people will do. Ever heard of positive reinforcement? People who do good things deserve to be applauded and where we get this ridiculous idea that's it wrong for them to enjoy that is beyond me.
First of all Oprah is not God. She put her shoes on lke anyone else.
Actually, I attended one of her shows and she had someone else put her shoes on for her- no joke! ; )
Oprah move to Tulsa we would love it !!
Oprah !!!! I love you, please dump steadman..
you got to be kidding he said that//i know she is an entertainer and a great humanitarian, but Steadman she is not Jesus
no wonder she never married you
Reason why she hasnt done anything for people in the US b/c they priorities are wrong...People in 3 world countries want a education rather than and ipod or ipad...American Consumerism is what i call it
Oh look, another person that hates America. You must be a Liberal.
John...take ure $tupid political rantings else where.
What have you contributed to your city besides paying taxes?
John – you're an idiot. Anytime someone disagrees with you cons, it's because they "hate America." Do you have any independent thoughts or do you just enjoy spewing b.s. from other cons (Limbaugh, Beck, Fox "News")?
so sorry, John, that you can't leave your pathetic political crap somewhere else.... you must be a loser.
I'm a 63 yo white male, who never misses her show. I have great admiration and respect for this lady. Most of the blogs i've read tells me that most people dont know what all she has done for everyone. I cant' understand these people, jealousy?
Is Oprah your life coach?
She did give back to Chicago. She put money into parks and recreation centers. I have to agree with Stedman that Oprah has done more for Chicago then Chicago would ever give her credit for. When the city needed her for the Olympic bid she answered the call and went. Since they did not get the bid then the City of Chicago blamed her for losing the bid. Chicago is full of it and themselves. I am excited she is leaving and taking her BILLIONS with her.
He has to be joking. The city shut down Michigan Ave (seriously, Michigan Avenue) for three days last summer so she could throw a block party for herself. They wouldn't do that for anyone else. The city frickin' loves her. But she's leaving and what does he expect us to do? Wear black and stop brushing our hair? Chicago's a great town, it was before Oprah, it will still be after Oprah. And in those decades inbetween she earned billions while working here, so I think everyone has benefitted. What more is there to do?
Your statement perfectly sums it up!
Oprah has good intentions, I think. But she is very self-centered and encourages everyone else to be. Don't believe me? Watch her next show when it involves a relatively serious life matter. Count how many times she says the word "self." I was on the Oprah bandwagon in the late 90's and early 00's. I read all of the self help books and I soon realized that all I was focusing on was myself, how I felt, what I wanted, what I needed, what I wanted to do, go and be. Me. Me. Me. Ugh, what does Stedman want Chicago to do, anyways? Give her a processional whenever she steps out of her apartment? For the love of God, give it a rest!
"So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full."
Matthew 6:2, I mean, if he's going to compare her to Jesus, let's see what he had to say on the subject of seeking honor for your good deeds.
Oprah has received her reward. I just don't get what Stedman thinks Chicago should do.
Excellently put.
MY POINT EXACTLY
Wow. Just Wow. I don't know much about Oprah. In fact, because her show was on during the day and I've always worked, I think I have only caught one or two of her shows, or perhaps maybe only short clips that make an evening news show. I do know from what I did see was a woman who seems genuine, caring and very generous. I read some of these statements and I am shocked at the "What did Oprah Do?". Besides a woman who shared insight and inspiration to millions, especially for the black race, she not only gave compassion to those Americans watching she gave money. Oprah gave gifts to her audience, something I never before heard of. I watched a clip one evening that on her show, she gave away cars to her audience. I believe that audience came from Chicago – or should I say to "Chicagans". I just went on the internet and grabbed some information for those of you who think Oprah did not do anything on a local or US scale. Please take a moment and digest what this woman has given. I hope you find it in heart not to ask "what did she really do?" but instead realize how much she has done and to give thanks and praise.
Since 1998 when The Angel Network started, donations totaled more than $80 million which helped fund more than 200 grants and projects in the United States and over 30 other countries. The Angel Network said it has helped build more than 55 schools in 12 countries, provided school uniforms and supplies to 18,000 South African children, and helped more than 1,000 families after the natural disasters like hurricane Katrina.
ya, and where was she to help when Detroit had to close down over 60% of its public schools? Where was she or what was she doing during Katrina's aftermath, or helping families in need who were living in huts and tent-cities when the recession hit hard last year? NOWHERE! She'd rather help out other countries than help out her own. And people call her a patriot... You get respect by giving respect, and she has not respected her fellow "Chicagoans", Illinoisans, nor Americans. With as much power and money she has, she could really make a difference, she chooses not to.
And about giving away presents. Price is right gives away more prizes and money in a month than she does in a year. Ooooooo she gave away cars, and still made every person pay the sales tax of 4k or something close to those figures. So what did they tell the people that couldn't get financed for a 5k loan to cover the sales tax, oh, yeah, they didn't get the car... And MOST of those gifts are donated to her, since they get to plug their products...
Jim,
The last line states Oprah's charity helped over 1,000 people after Natural Disasters, including Katrina.
Jim you should do some research before you diminish others. She's done plenty in America. Oprah personally gave over $10 million of her own money to help in the wake of Katrina & raised millions more. Overall Oprah has personally donated over $306 million to charity making her the only African American and only performer on Business Week's list of America's 50 greatest philanthropists:
http://bwnt.businessweek.com/interactive_reports/philanthropy_individual_2008/?chan=magazine+channel_special+report
She's also payed HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS to the U.S. government in taxes.
In addition Oprah has created THOUSANDS of jobs for Americans through her talk show and the other talk shows she launched like Dr. Oz and her magazine, radio channel, movies etc. She's brought BILLIONS of dollars worth of tourism and publicity to Chicago too, just by hosting the country's number one talk show there for a quarter century and attracting so many celebrities and media to visit the city just to be on her show or report on her.
No Need to explain to these ignorant people, because she could give away all of her money and it would not be enough. At least she is using her talents, money, organizations, power, and leadership to help others. when there are plenty of other WEALTHY people in the USA just sitting on money or if they are doing positive things with their money its only because it makes themself look good and not just because they are genuine and have a heart naturally to help others.
jim- just one question...where were you?
look i'm from the chicagoland area and i will admit that i tend to not appreciate things in myown hometown (sadly i've never even been to the sears tower)
yeah it's easy for people to point the finger at others, but in the classic phrase "when you point one finger three more are pointing back at you".
GM gave all those people free Pontiac G6's, not Oprah. GM used her show for advertisement purposes. Unfortunately it wasn't enough to save Pontiac, or GM for that matter.
"ya, and where was she to help when Detroit had to close down over 60% of its public schools?"
Jim, your paid taxes and everyone else's do not go to Oprah. That's a question to pose to your government. In fact, you should be on the Bush's website. He's the one who invaded Iraq and as a result our money and American lives are being wasted for an unnecessary war.
No one cares... Oprah has contributed very little to the city of Chicago. That's why no one will miss her. Her mentoring programs are small and do not even make a dent in the system. I have done community service and volunteer work and I know average-joe people that put more time and money into programs than she does. Cancel the show now, and have her move to Africa now, rather than later.
Way to go Steadman! I think it's so sweet the way he is defending her and demanding she get the respect she is owed. It takes a real man to speak up for his woman like that. The prophet comment is adorable. I'm don't even live m Chicago, or the U.S. for that matter, and there's no one I respect or admire more than Oprah.
Klama, you have my deepest sympathies.
I too agree Oprah has done great international work; not near enough for Chicago, or work including all USA. Stedman has certainly benefitted from Oprah.
Random thought... What if Oprah has a Helen Thomas moment one day and it all ends instantly? :p
Oprah is a racist with no redeeming qualities. No appreciation indeed. Oprah has no appreciation for what Chicago has done for her.
AMEN!
I remember watching the news... the story about her giving a speech to college graduates.. about a remark something about having white people work for her. I was shocked. I was saddened by the remark. Still to this day, I do not know how or if Oprah apologized for the remark or gave any explanation. I assume she has an excellent publicist and that she did. The remark, however, doesn't necessarily make her a racist. It does seem to imply a need to feel a sense of conquer over another – which I would think comes from a place of once feeling somehow oppressed by another. Whether or not at an earlier part of her life she directly felt biased against or "not good enough" because of her skin color, it clearly left an impression that came out later in her remark. Oprah wasn't born Oprah. She is human like you and I. There was a time when she was just a girl on the street – A black girl that America did not yet know. I can only suspect that she had experienced racial bias first hand. It's something Oprah would have to work on. No one's perfect.
I completely agree with your statement. I understand she does humanitarian work for others, but why is it always in other countries? Why not here??
I still can't figure out why Oprah is a racist. I have been watching her for years. I have heard her accused of being a racist by both BLACK and WHITE people. Envy is a bad thing. The White people really started calling her racist when she started supporting Obama. SO, I guess all the White McCain supporters are Racist? And the fact that she has supported other White candidates in the past is irrelevant. See, the truth is, you know nothing about her EXCEPT she supported Obama. And, YOU hate Obama, mainly because he is BLACK, which makes YOU the racist. And the Black people hate her because they think she caters to WHITES. More ignorant racists. Catch-22. This woman couldn't be farther from a racist.
A White woman who actually pays attention (and she does do community work in Chicago, and just about EVERYWHERE in the US. She is on Forbes top list of Celebrity charity benefactors, but facts don't mean anything to racists, haters or people who don't pay attention to a little thing like facts).
My god, what an ego. Then again, this is Oprah- the woman who has a photo shoot every month because there is no one else worthy of gracing the cover of O magazine. I'm sure she does a lot of good works, and those should be their own reward. Aren't her legions of followers and her billions of dollars enough to satisfy her? What does Stedman expect, a statue and a parade? And she's hardly the major force bringing attention to Chicago. I grew up in that area, and none of the reasons I love Chicago and come back to visit involve Oprah.
I so agree! She has the biggest ego of anyone I've ever seen in my life! She devotes entire shows all about herself....like anyone cares. I remember the Mad Cow trial where she couldn't talk about it until afterwards and when the trial was over, she devoted an entire show all about what her thoughts were like a play by play. I guess it doesn't help that the women in her audience practically drool over her! Yes, she does have power and influence and she does some great things to help others...no one is denying her that, but there is a quote about doing good deeds....don't know it word for word, but something to the effect of if you're doing good deeds from the goodness of your heart, public recognition shouldn't be necessary. So true!
I can't wait to have her off the air...
People that aren't familiar with the publishing industry (magazines in particular) make comments like this out of ignorance. So please allow me to educate you. The reason that Oprah is on the cover of all of her magazines is not about ego. It's about how the magazine world works. When you see celebs, people, artists, etc on the cover of MANY magazines, it's because the've PAID to be there. In order to avoid having to deal with people paying to be on the cover of her magazine, and it becoming both political and controversial, she's chosen to be on all of the covers. Smart business move – which is why she's Oprah and we're not.
It was a surprise to see Mr Graham make a rare tv appearance and talk about Oprah. Are they still together? It seems that her BFF Gayle King knows more about Oprah than he does and she would have been the best person to interview. I think Oprah is a great humanitarian but I would not call her a prophet!
She's going to have to sit him down and have a talk
Best comment on here. (I assume you mean she has to sit down and talk with Stedman.)
Sorry, I just noticed the "him" in your comment. Somehow I missed it on the first read. Again, great comment. If I had to sum up my thoughts on this article in one quick thought, the way you put it would have been it exactly.
As a white male, I have always had a deep admiration and respect for Oprah. Someone who has beat all the odds to become a successful, hard working member of American society. She is a role model for all of us. Its not just Chicago who has benefited from her contributions, she makes all Americans proud around the globe. If only there were more like her.
Finally, a voice of reason with no hatred or ignorance involved. Thanks Mike.
In regard to Stedman's comments...I don't think he is calling her a prophet. Assuming that is like assuming Obama was calling SP a pig when he made that lipstick on a pig comment. Get some common sense, people.
OMG really? Oprah a prophet? That's blasphemous. How is that view from your ivory tower? Wow! Lol!
She's not a prophet.....it's just a quote...it was a quote that Jesus also quoted when he said it in the Bible...so no, it's not a blaspheme
That prophet stuff he Staedman he talked shows how stupid he really is.
Prophet? Heck no! And if she is a prophet, for what god is that because it certainly can't be Almighty God, creator of the Universe? She doesn't believe in Jesus either, so she absolutely cannot be a christian. She believes in so many things, it's ridiculous.
It is funny how he points out that she brought International Attention to Chicago... That she is a great humanitarian in opening up a school in South Africa. But never once mentioned anything she has done for Chicago... Maybe if she spent more time doing things here in the United States of America, as well as the City of Chicago, she might be more respected and appreciated...
She actually has several mentoring programs (amoung other things) in Chicago. Everytime I come to the area I'm amazed how little the folks in Chicago actually know about how much she's been doing for years in the city
I'm not shocked at his remarks,,,and what educated person has not heard the 'prophet not appreciated' quote. Speaking as someone who has spent my life in community service and in the media – trust me – the public has no understanding of what really goes on behind the scenes from those close to you. We're just not used to hearing celebs complain out loud – even a little bit as Stedman did on the air
Who in their right mind would be bothered by being called Mr. Oprah Winfrey? I'm sure that helps him out plenty. Of course maybe Chicago's appreciation of Oprah pales in comparison to Stedman's appreciation of her (and her wallet).
I respect Steadman except that he acts whipped and you know he's not getting any. On an airline flight, all Oprah did was complain about him and his faults in front of all of the first class passengers. He needs to move on. That might wake her up.
@pam jones: Ms Jones–please calm down. It's not that serious. If you really have this much disdain for Oprah, don't watch her show or read her magazine or go to her website. Very simple.
Chicagoans would appreciate Oprah more if she did more good locally. She's a huge name with huge amounts of power, but does not give back to the area directly. Instead of a school in Africa, why doesn't she help the local inner city schools in her own backyard?? There's a lot of good to be done in her own city and she just ignores it.
I remember reading a story which stated that Oprah believes that the American kids don't appreciate what it is that she would give them. And as upset wth her for that comment as I was, after thinking about it, I came to two conclusions: 1. She is correct that we have a bunch of very spoiled kids in America and 2. The cost of doing anything here is ridiculous. Add to that another point: It is HER money and she can do what she wants. Why is it that we don't question others who do more outside of the states than stateside? Madonna, Angelina Jolie to name a few. They went outside of the states to bring other kids here. They started schools, in Madonna case a JEWISH school in Africa. That is a bit "Take what I'm giving you or don't" wouldn't you say?
We can fault Oprah for everything she does. But honestly, if you had the money, wouldn't you want to get the biggest bang for your buck. Oprah does do things for Americans by the way. She is just saavy enough to know that in America, what you do , you get a tax credit for it. In this way, she can help as many persons as she can.
I think Oprah is obnoxious, arrogant and stingy. Sure Africa needs help, but Chicago or USA kids and families don't? I think she should move to Africa, and leave us alone. Her famous words as she ignores people as her guests and in her audience, "uh-Huh" and moves on to her topic. She acts like she thinks she is clever and funny. I wanted to like her since I knew her in Baltimore, but I changed quickly.
I read about her too, when she opened the girls' school in Africa. She was asked why she chose to do that. She said, when American kids were asked, if they could have anything they wanted, what would it be? They wanted $100 sneakers. The girls in Africa, when asked the same question, asked for schoolbooks so they could attend school. That's why Oprah opened a school in Africa! Good for her...I applaud her. Maybe if kids in Chicago actually cared about getting an education, she would provide it to them as well.
Well said MASMA.
American kids dont appreciate what they have...its all about material stuff. why should she or anyone put their money to waste..use it where its mostly needed.
She diesn't support the city or the kids more because she gets more press with going outside the country. Anyone who thinks she gives a rats ass about this country, or what is happening to the kids in this country, right down the street from her illustrious estate, is blind to the truth. Hell, she only has to step outside the front of her studio to see the homeless and less fortunate. The reality is, ratings are all she has ever concerned herself with.
I agree. Think global. ACT LOCAL.
@lrltree – no one is talking about Jolie, or Madonna because they don't have quasi-husbands complaining that their women are under-appreciated...
i agree with you it's Oprah's money, and she can do what she wants with it... by the same token, it's Chicagoans appreciation, and they can do with it whatever the want! so why criticize people who'd like to see Oprah spend her money on them... Stedman thinks Oprah should be appreciated *in Chicago* for getting Chicago a higher international profile which is arguable (at best), and for opening a school in Africa. Nope, you want Chicago to appreciate you, do something for Chicago, otherwise no complaints please.
What have you done to improve the school systems in the U.S.?
I AGREE!!...."she's got a school in South AFRICA"....NOT SOUTHSIDE CHICAGO!!
Maybe if kids werent taught to be social welfare suckers from their worthless parents, they would value education more than 100$ shoe handouts.
Julie,
The U.S. is still one of the richest and powerful nations on earth. People here have more opportunity than those in some of the countries in Africa. Those countries have been impoverished with constant civil wars (orchestrated by European countries) and diseases. The bail out money given to the banks is enough to make every American a millionaire. I'm not taking anyone's side, but don't judge if you have the opportunity to help and others and not doing jack...At least Oprah is.
I've been saying the same thing all along. She's helping outside of Chicago. She has not done anything for her people. Her show is geared more toward well off white women that can afford to stay home and watch that stupid show.
Not wanting to trash all Oprah does, but how about a little of that generosity here at home! There are people all over the Appalachian who live in substandard conditions and way below the poverty level. I think the saying goes "Charity begins at home". If she is gong to be using her monies for good, it would be nice to see some of that spent right here in the United States. Not every kid is unappreciative. Maybe set up some college funds for underpriveledge kids here in the U.S!
Are you serious...oprah's busines endeavors pay millions of dollars in taxes to chicage each year........she employs a boatload of people........and she ends up being another victim of people who hate her because she woked hard and became rich.
Viva Oprah
I haven't been an Oprah fan for awhile now, but I do appreciate the donations etc. she makes in the states. The problem is she thinks she should have more clout with her opinions and money.
Her story about the incident at Hermes in London didn't hold water, she never let the Hermes guy talk when he came on her show.....blogs said she and her sidekick King created a huge scene when they arrived at closing to make a purchase.
You can often see her glimse to see if a camera is on her as she reacts to guests etc. She used to be real.
Is he really referring to Oprah as a prophet? LOL
That's the exact point where I stopped reading.
Of course not. That is simply a "general" saying....oh , and since you take things "literal, I'm not saying he is a general. ......
Reydon: Learn how to form a sentence so it's grammatically correct before you start spouting off about others.
Hehe Reydon...HEIL STEADMAN!
Yup, that's what he said. Had to read that again to believe it.
Don't go away mad. Just go away.
I think he is. What complete and utter jerk. And if Oprah thinks she is prophet then she has whole lot of problems. Becasue she may have some wisdom but is not even close to being a prophet.
If she is seeking to please man then i could understand why she feels under appreciated but we are here to do the work of GOD and to please HIM so instead of seeking glory from man she should "appreciate" GOD giving her the opportunity to be successful and realize the glory does not belong to her but to the FATHER almighty....peace, love & blessings!
Meaning: profit prophet
No, you moron. It's a reference for comparison suggesting that individuals are not accorded the same respect from individuals/cities familiar with them.
I agree... A PROPHET.. Really??!!!! I agree with @Adam. She is a woman with an opinion and has made a great deal of money by offering her opinion. What does Stedman want Chicago to do for Oprah? Stedman just go back to washing Oprahs and Gail's clothes and shut up.
EXACTLY! I was like, "I'm sorry, what?"
Well, if she's a prophet, that must explain the messiah (obama) and the fact she's still swinging from his unit.
can we trade oprah to get gary coleman back? I never even liked that tool. But it's better than oprah.
My sentiments as well, Steadman ( Steadfast) calling Oprah a Prophet....the Man has lost it, while I appreciate the things Oprah has accomplished, she is not a prophet, she is better at probbing the facts out of you then most, and she has been blessed with a keen ability to monopolize certain situations...Steadman needs to heed his misguided apreciation, because all things come from God, not Man....
No, he did not literally call Oprah a prophet. Jeez! What he said, using a literary allusion, was that a person's friends, family, and hometown population rarely recognize how special one of their own really is.
What's wrong with modern education? This is one of those things. I'm amazed at the number of people who posted here can't recognize a simple reference mechanism.
My feelings exactly! Give me a break.
No Stedman, Chicago appreciates Oprah. Chicago doesn't appreciate you.
Where are all the Dr. Oz'es and Dr Phil's going to go now to get famous??.....Sept 2011 cant come soon enough
Amen!
I agree!
Right. Oprah, one of the richest women in history, in a city that has embraced her for decades, isn't appreciated?? Let me get a tissue and wipe the tears. Are you serious? Who cares about her? She is not God like so many people treat her. She is a woman with an opinion. Big freakin' deal! Sheesh, get over yourself!!!
LOL!
Right on! Stedfast would have us fall down and make obeisance to Oprah. Maybe he doesn't appreciate her...he still hasn't married her.
this story is extremely redundant and stupid
You are all just jealous of her money. (me too!) She can do what she pleases. We don't have to approve. And for the record...it's Oprah who has said no to marrying Stedman.
I am sure she tries to be the person she can be, as we all should. If you think I am going to put her on a pedestal, think again. Her money allows her to do more than most. If she had to scrimp every penny do you think she would do as much as she has? If you have to toot your own horn, then you are just an attention grabber and your heart is not in it for the right reasons.
If Chicago is supposed to "appreciate" Oprah, then she needs to assist in reforming schools here in Chicago besides other places around the world. Yes, she has given millions out, but how much has actually gone to people in Chicago?
Okie Dokie! I believe Stedman Graham may have been refering to the scriptuere "Matt 13:57 Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor except in his own country and in his own house."
Question – Is he trying to make Oprah part of the Trinity? I think NOT! I'm sure there are folks that think she's a Saint but let's not forget she's a Human Being who in my opinion walks a fine line.
Suggestion to Stedman – Read the BIBLE! before you use it in this forum. Oh! it's not on Oprah's Book Club top 10.
Maybe it's Stedman who doesn't appreciate Oprah....
Are you kidding me? Her royal majesty isn't getting her just recognition. Poor thing. I feel so sorry for her. Her life must be terrrible....what, with all the those millions of $ and all..... boohoo. Yo, Stedman, me thinks you're whipped!
I thought Stedman and Oprah broke up.
"A Prophet has no honor in it's own town?" I think it might be going slightly overboard to call Oprah a prophet. And I find it really hard to pat celebrities on the back for helping those who are less fortunate. She has billions of dollars and lots of free time, she SHOULD be doing these types of things. If I was in her position I would be too. She has more than any one person could ever possibly want or need. I live paycheck to paycheck and still try to give back whenever I can, so I am not impressed. Show me a woman living a life like Mother Theresa lived, and then I will be impressed.
That is so true Stedman and way to stand up for your Woman, we are rarely shown in the good light so when one exceeds in allowing here creator to use her, she needs be highly praise even though we know Oprah doesnt do it for the praise she has a higher calling God Bless you both. with much Love and support. and Thank you for O magazine Oprah.

She was someone who didn't receive the honor that was due to her, Oprah lives a very privileged, very honored life.
Oprah is very important because she can influence the stupid.
The prophet knows when their essential work is done. And gets off the stage. Has nothing to do with the influenced. So it is with Oprah.
There isn't a fast food restaurant, donut shop or bakery in Chicago that doesn't appreciate Oprah.
I love the fact that he attempts to use scripture as an analogy to Oprah.
The "Church of Oprah" is sickening. The way these women drool over her............
JonathanQ-How is this story redundant? Sounds like you learned a big boy word and want to show it off.
Mr. Oprah how do you like riding on her coat tails?
Personally, once she denied Jesus as being "the WAY, the truth, and the life" and that "no one get's to the Father but by Him", I lost all respect for her! (even though, I couldn't have cared less about her show to begin with) She won't even be obedient and marry the man who she claims that she is with! (Mind you, even the appearance of sin is bad, yet too many people, especially women, are holding on to her words as if it's gospel! She's done well for herself, now press on!!!
I don't think Oprah cares! I don't believe Oprah appreciates anyone "BLACK" unless they are already famous or her "BFF". Stedman get over it!!!!
Stedman talks about Chicago not appreciate Ophra, but a man who truly loves a woman and wants to spend his life with her would marry that woman. That is the greatest show of respect a man can have for a woman.
...amazing what makeup can do.....see this woman without it, and she looks like an ape on crack
Opra is a human being. She performed her calling on her life. She is appreciated by those who God has allowed her to touch. She is one person and the expectations that many more should be moved is obserd towards appreciation. She and other has witness the joy, pain, sorrow, happiness, charity and peace shes has brought to many. She is not the savior and the article infers worship in my eyes. She should continue to go where she is celebrated and not where she is tolerated. She is one person who was gifted to touch many. One has to learn that when no one is cheering for them they have to cheer for themselves. This article appears self serving for the individual who inspired it and that purpose I don't know.
