'24' star pulls name from Emmy contention

Don’t look for Cherry Jones to win an Emmy this year.

The actress, who played the president on “24,” has withdrawn her name from possible nominees, according to The Advocate. Jones has not given any indication as to why she is declining to enter the race.

Jones snagged the award last year. She is not the first actress to refuse to throw her hat in the ring.  In 2008, actress Katherine Heigl announced she was dropping out of the race because she didn’t feel the material she was given to work with on “Grey’s Anatomy” warranted a nomination.

Maybe it was just a classy move on her part to give other actresses a shot since she already won once for playing this character. It's ridiculous that an actor can win multiple emmies for playing the same character year after year (I'm looking at you Tony Shaloub and Kelsey Grammer). Totally screws other people out of recognition.

They struggled to find a good president after they killed Pres. Palmer(Dennis Haysbert). He was by far the best president during the 8 seasons.

she did not WRITE her character's lines, as the actor she was portraying the lines and plots that were given to her so please do not blame the actor for any negativity in how her storyline was presented in the last season.....

Cherry Jones is a celebrated theatre actress. She is extremely gifted. While I can't pretend to know her reasons, perhaps she felt it was another actor's turn this year. I look forward to her return to the theatre.

This year was soooooooooooooo PAINFUL. New writers or what?!! But the blonde chick with the hair carefully placed over her shoulder caused me to changed the channel to The Bachelor. That was even more painful! Give me the good old days of 24. Hope the movie will be better.........MUCH BETTER!

24 was dying a rapid death before they finally put it to sleep. The only good thing about 24 was its first 3 or 4 years. I still yearn for the days of Chloe, Morris & Kiefer......a few good character actors slotted in on occasion including the first black president and the crazy guy president. Some of the torture scenes were absolute classics.

I thought Season 8 was the worst of the seasons, and I am a die hard who never missed a single episode. The whole premise of 24 (except season 1) is pretty over the top, so it is important for the viewer to dispense with the plausible and just enjoy the ride...but this year's plot twists were juvenile, poorly written and even beyond fantasy. Dumb presidents, dumb ex-presidents, perfect timing of bombs and carjackings, Jack's impenetrable exterior, Chloe as acting director (yah right), double, triple and quadruple crosses, and then when they killed the bounty hunter and shoved him in the cabinet, that seemed normal...Cherry was so good in season 7 and so flat awful in season 8. BUT, I can't wait for the movie!

Perhaps she withdrew her name because she wanted to give one of the other actresses on "24" a shot at it?

She made a good Hillary Clinton, and this was obviously by design. Still, Hillary would not have fallen apart as much and as easily as did Cherry's character.

We may not need to be too harsh to her. Jones is a fine actress, but Emmy award for Season 8? Not sure.

She did not act too well in the Season 8 mainly because of the writers. The president was a poorly written character in Season 8. President Taylor was a better character in Season 7.

I really can't believe all of the hurtful comments being made. I live in Ms. Jones' hometown. Her father is in the last stages of cancer and she probably is trying to spend as much time with him as possible and doesn't need all the distractions. She is putting family ahead of herself which is an example this country should follow!

Probably because she's preparing to do a major and very demanding role in a Broadway play in August and needs every second to prepare. I imagine she does not have the time to do the extensive campaigning and press interviews which a successful Emmy push would require.

If it were my guess, it's because there are a select few in entertainment who get the fact that people pick and choose various awards based on political controversy and/or pollitical debate. Just becuase something is watched, purchased, or is popular amongst many people, does not mean it's necessarily "great" or worthy of an award. I think she was chosen simply because she's a woman and it furthers some peoples agenda. I loved her role and the 24 show itself, however, I would simply agree with a decision to take a step back from calling the role as "award winning".

Isn't it obvious? She was involved in a plot to cover up Russian involvement in the Gulf Coast oil spill. Ever since President Obama announced he'll be advising with professionals to "find who's ass to kick", Cherry has realized she can't keep the secret under wraps much longer, hence her withdrawal of her Emmy eligibility.

"24" just very recently ended, and all of a sudden BP was able to cap the oil leak after several weeks of unsuccessful attempts? Can't be a coincidence. Jack is back.

Why do people get so upset over something as trivial as this? If she doesn't want to be nominated for whatever reason it is her buisness. If anything, people who don't feel their work is worth positive notation should at least be thanked for their honesty.

i don't think actors should be allowed to pull this attention-getting stunt. if you are nominated, graciously accept the nomination and then win or lose. i'd lilke to say 'we will remember, even if the record is not there to prove what she did', but in fact, people have short-term memories. hopefully she'll continue to suck as an actress, so that we don't have to ever see her again

Wow, just wow. Attention getting stunt? How would she get more attention from pulling her name from consideration than by winning an Emmy? That makes no sense at all.
