Jolie and Pitt visit displaced families in Bosnia

Angelina Jolie took a break from filming her latest movie to visit Bosnia on Monday, April 5, with her partner Brad Pitt.

More than 113,000 Bosnians and 7,000 refugees from Croatia are still affected by the war for independence from Yugoslavia that ended more than 14 years ago, according to the UN Refugee Agency UNHCR.

Jolie and Pitt visited a collective center in Gorazde where many displaced families live in “appalling conditions.” These conditions include a lack of basic amenities, like running water, says the UNHCR.

"After seeing these people and hearing their stories, I cannot overemphasize the need to focus on the well being of the most vulnerable individuals of the population," Jolie said in a UNHCR press release. “By ending displacement and ensuring quality of life, we can help to promote progress and long-term stability."

Jolie is a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador, and said she hopes to return to the country soon to meet with political leaders to discuss possible solutions.

"I hope we can find solutions for the remaining tens of thousands of displaced people," Jolie said. “Only then can we really close one of the most tragic chapters in modern history."

Personally, if all web owners and bloggers made good content material as you did, the web will likely be a lot more useful than ever before.

I find it intereting that people really dont know too much about Bosnia despite trips like this. What makes her so special??? instead of flying off all arounnd the world and rent a villa in France for $$$$$$ live in one place and donate all that money to help these people. Sorry but people like this need a reality check. if you want to bring attention to this problem then inform the press so they can cover it, not some small little news article about it. Divert the attention from your social life by doing this, but to visit forone day...really she should spend a week there and really get to know what hardships they have.the amout of money she spends on art etc is a joke when there are so many people in Africa, asia and our country that need help. the places they stay in for 3 months the rental would feed maybe 4 vilalges in Africa or they could use that money to set up adpotfunds for people who need a little help to adopt kids.

And honestly when was the last time Jolie even had a movie out. What does she neeed publicity for? She is one of hollywood's hottest and most saught after actresses. She is foregoing Millions and millions in potential earnings to concentrate on her Job as a UN Ambassador and help in as many ways as possible. Celebs only seek publicity when they have a movie or album to promote, she has niether, by choice, so all these "seeking photo ops" comments are ridiculous and ill founded.

for everyone who is criticizing Jolie about not helping in our own country, a country that at least affords basic human rights and oppurtunities to all citizens (africa, Bosnia, and many other third world countires and continents she chooses to work in do not.) DO NOT forget that Jolie and Pitt were among the first people, let alone celebrities, to Aid in the Katrina devestation of 05 and still assist in rebuilding this American city Today, where many of us, celeb and Joe Blow included, have forgotten about our own neightbors plight for their continued struggle for survival. Jolie and Pitt and family even reside there for much of the year, owning property in the city where so much devastation occured. Jolie is one of the few people who puts others before herself. And you NEVER hear Jolie tooting her own horn about what she is doing and where she is doing it.
Until you at least volunteer to feed the homeless on thanksgivin or Christmas for a few hours, please don't criticize those who are giving their own time and money to help strangers, and most importantly, children.

There's so many unfortunate people in the world, it's exhausting, saddening and unending. Regardless of Angelina's motives for visiting other lands to bring awareness, at least it's an example to care for others. It brings us out of our little world, to see how others really live. We are responsible for our own lives, our own actions, and no one should judge or criticize. Just be sure that when you reflect about your life, that you are happy with what you have contributed to others, and the world around us.

Madeline, don't be an idiot. She can't just take someone's husband away. Do you think he's a 5 year-old kid who's been manipulated with a bag of M&M's? A marriage is broken by those within its sanctuary, not by outsiders. Obviously his ex-wife could not make him happy. You can't be serious to blame the other woman when your husband decides that he no longer loves you, can you? Don't tell me she took YOUR husband away too? And why would she feel guilty doing drugs in the past? Who did she hurt to feel guilty about? What's all this f-ed stuff she's done in the past that you speak of? How is all of this directly affecting you?

This article is about her helping the world not a gossip column in the tabloid. Did you even read it? Why don't you think of all the bad things you have done in your life to feel guilty about. Maybe then you'll feel guilty enough to get your ass up from that couch and actually do something to help others. To Madeline and to those alike, grow up please!

First deary, you cannot 'take' someone's husband or wife, they leave if they are unhappy. And mind you I love Jennifer A., sorry for her hurt, but that was many years and many children ago..she seems to have moved on, you really should too.
Brad and Angie (and Jennifer and many many other celebs) do wonderful things to help less fortunate people not just here, but all over the world. Those that critic their every move should perhaps look inwardly at themselves and do a little critic'in' there. No one that walks this earth is perfect, we have all done or said things we perhaps wished we had not, or had done differently. Live, let live and try to be a kinder person maybe that can be your contribution to the world.

I am flabbergasted at those who condemn Jolie for the things she had done in her personal life. What does it matter to you if she's wore a vile of her ex's blood around her neck or if she kissed her brother? Does it matter to you that she's a "homewrecker"? Yes, I'm sure she held a gun to Pitt's head and commanded him to leave his ex-wife. Seriously, do these things affect you personally that you have to knock her? Jesus Christ, get a f**king life.

Here is a woman who dedicates her time and money to help the less fortunate–doing her part to help the world, and all you can say is she's doing this for "publicity". For those who are too stupid to understand, she's a UNHCR GOODWILL AMBASSADOR. Her job is exploit hunger and poverty in 3rd WORLD COUNTRIES. The point being is to use this "publicity" to raise awareness to the mass. It seems to be working since all you morons are coming out of the woodwork to be reading this article and posting half-assed comments. Now if only there's something someone can do to alter your ignorant, selfish views and change your hatin' ass...

I'm willing to bet that most of you are sitting at home jobless and depending on the government for assistance. Come on, tell the truth–this is really about you being upset that Jolie's charity tax deductible takes a small fraction out of your welfare paycheck, isn't it? You people make me sick to my stomach.

He and his wife took it upon themselves to start a youthgroup at their tiny little church with nothing to work with. Now with only a small group of kids they are out collecting food and clothes for the homeless shelters and they are always taking donations for the local food bank.

I have never seen anyone work as hard as this man help a community.

Just to add my voice in support of Jolie and Pitt. Just because someone is using their fame to draw attention to causes, people automatically assume it's for the worst reasons, without obviously doing the research into Jolie's work along with Pitt in New Orleans post-Katrina, while at the same time helping parts of the world that don't have established charities and non-profits to the same degree the US already has. Frankly, the US doesn't need their help because there is plenty of sources available. Bosnia, on the other hand, falls off the radar too much, as do other countries Jolie has visited. Folks who want to condemn her for this work must then also condemn Audrey Hepburn and Danny Kaye and Harry Belafonte and all the others who spent much of their time doing exactly what Jolie is doing now.

Everyone who thinks Jolie and Pitt should focus on issues here in the US are right on! They should spend their money helping US citizen pay their mortgages off, help them make their credit card payments, help them with their diabetes medications, and help give out free food because Welfare, medicare, and SS are not enough! Forget the millions of children who are starving in developing countries, women being abused in Africa with no laws to protect them, and millions of displaced refugees! It's totally their fault for being born outside the US! They deserve it! Now, back to my tv and pizza.

Extreme human suffering is everywhere. Look around. Everyone suffers– in every country. Policies and infrastructure are important so that the welfare of groups of people is protected, to a certain point. The rest is up to the individual. That is the way of life. Awareness is nothing without firm and correct action over a long period of time. In the end, I don't believe this couple will make a big difference in Bosnia. They are better suited as actors– something they're good at. "Actors."

Maj-Gen. Lewis MacKenzie, now retired, commanded UN troops during the Bosnian civil war:
"The Kosovo-Albanians have played us like a Stradivarius. We have subsidized and indirectly supported their violent campaign for an ethnically pure and independent Kosovo. We have never blamed them for being the perpetrators of the violence in the early '90s and we continue to portray them as the designated victim today in spite of evidence to the contrary. When they achieve independence with the help of our tax dollars combined with those of bin Laden and al-Qaeda, just consider the message of encouragement this sends to other terrorist-supported independence movements around the world."

I do think the presence of a celebrity can bring awareness to causes, people, etc. But then what? These are usually issues with a long and complicated history. Raising awareness is one thing, but how much does it really do for the cause in comparison to what it does for the image of the celebrity?

If you really understand it, there is really only one way to help these people. It's not a quick fix and its result has more to do with correcting the problem than having a celebrity swing by for a visit.

Don't know why "womb raider" is considered okay to call Angelina, just because she adopted children from other countries. I did the same thing, and my daughter would tell you she is very glad I did. She is an adult now and is most happy she is part of our family and living in a country where she had many opportunities, instead of an orphanage and no family, with no opportunities. They adopted because they wanted children (the best reason to adopt: not because you feel pity or want to rescue a child), and where they adopt from is really their business, not someone else's. Adoption is hard enough, without other people thinking they have to put their 2 cents in and tell you which child you ought to have. Wonder how anyone else would like it of AJ was telling others which children They were supposed to raise? She can't even live in NOLA and try to save half the city by spending 1/2 hers and Brad's money without being criticized for not doing enough "here" in this country because it's not the right town for some of you. Good grief......

Angelina isn't the only celebrity who helps others. She is simply the only one who hires photographers to take pictures of her and send it to all the major news outlets. There are so many celebrities who do amazing things, but don't brag about to everyone for PR reasons. The people who do good deeds, regardless of who's watching, are the true noble ones.

I am involved in aid work and have traveled to many different countries. It is my passion and therefore I fund all of my own trips. It is one of the many sacrifices one makes when one has a passion for something. Many people have a calling to help those less fortunate outside of the United States and many people are called to help the less fortunate here in the United States. I don't believe it matters where one is called to help serve the less fortunate as long as you're serving those who need it. Take a look at your own life and ask yourself if you're a person making a difference in the lives of others and stop shaming those who do, no matter where they serve.

I live just outside of Nashville, Tn and these bone heads down here have voted to build a new CONVENTION CENTER instead of helping the children get a better education. Our schools are dismal at best and the teachers... Man, I applaud them for the work they do on what pay they do get. The law makers say it's all for the good of the city.
    What about the kids future???

I don't know about you,but I worry about the kids of today taking care of me when I am unable to care for my self – never mind SOCIAL SECURITY!!!

This is the kind of crap I am talking about folks.

Spending MILLIONS of dollars on a convention center instead of the kids which should be an investment to OUR future.

Take care of the U.S. first before taking on other countries problems.

we're on a downward spiral as a country. though it's no one persons fault (at least no one who can change it overnight) there arent many people trying to be part of the solution.

@Dragomir: Why would ANYONE want to preserve the Yugoslavia other than the serbs? And perhaps the serbs knew it would be bloody because they had the most to lose so they went to war with Slovenia first, then Croatia, then Bosnia and Kosovo. No one attacked Serbia – it was they who attacked every other state of the federation! Just accept it. That doesn't mean all serbs are bad...but a fact is a fact.
Vukovar in Croatia was the first city to fall to the serbs in that war:
Without Croatia's lucrative tourism and Bosnia's and Macedonia's strong agricultural economy it would mean that serbs would have to actually work instead of populating the cushy positions at embassies and consulates around the world.

It is cool that they use their fame to help everyone in the world.
God bless them. I used to think why aren't they using this to help people in this country. But they do that too! instead of being there, they could be here making more money. Yet they choose to help others.
    Pretty cool.

To Joel T. – I agree completely with you, Joel !

    Your comment is worth repeating:
"But what about the less fortunate folks here in the United States???
The are families in the hills of Tn, NC, and the Virginia foothills who don't even have a 6th grade education. That's the ENTIRE family.

I'm glad the Pitt / Jolie family does great things but can't we as a nation do something to help our own friends, families, and neighbors too???"

jr97flyr, it is just amazing that no matter what someone does to help others, there will always be someone who says just what you are saying; "It is fake, it doesn't mean anything." The fortunate thing is, it really doesn't matter what you think. There will be people who will hear about these people's plight because she will report about it, since she is a Goodwill ambassador to the U.N., and maybe something will be done even by a private group or by a mission group, or who knows who. But it may just start with AJ's visit. She has accomplished more than you realize; you just don't want to give credit because you are either hung up on he distant past, or you are a Jen fan. Either way, it's sad to be so filled with hate you can't see when someone is really trying to make a positive difference. As an adoptive parent myself, I think it's fine if she helps another child, and lots of people have nannies and babysitters; who cares except the haters?

Has anyone complaining about what AJ did when she was a teenager or early 20s, ever had a child or been a wild one themselves? People grow up and mature, and so did she. She does not do dumb stuff she did when she was a kid anymore; she has grown up and acts like an adult. She does lots of charitable work for many organizations and that should be acknowledged. All you folks who worry about poor Jen should be asking what she does that amounts to so much for the people of the world or this country or anyone except herself and her friends. That is her right, mind you, but I am tired of hearing what a loser AJ is and how she ruined Jen and Brad's life, when Brad made it publicly clear he wanted to do a lot of charitable work and have a family and Jen did not. Does no one remember that at all? He practically screamed it from the rooftops. AJ was already involved in both and not looking to "steal" him; he left someone who didn't want what he wanted. Whether I like that or not is not the issue; it's just the way it is.

They did not "pimp: pictures of their kids, they donated that money to charity, like a lot of their money, and if you donated as big a % of your money to any charities here, there, or anywhere, no one would be in need. I am a conservative Christian, but I refuse to hate on these two for what they try to do to help others. I will pray for them and be glad thy are helping! Sheeesh! Enough!

So here we go yet again....

Another day of me trying to tell you folks to read my previous statements. So FOR ONE FINAL TIME.... Here it is.

Yes. I understand that Jolie/ Pitt have done fabulous work for the folks of New Orleans... However that is not MY POINT.

My point is and will always be WHY IN THE WORLD can't other folks pick up where they left off???

Why can't folks like all of you and myself do something to help make America better for those who need help???

Again, I am ALL for helping where help is needed but I believe in making sure our folks get the help FIRST before shelling out money to 3rd world countries. We are so far in the hole tha we will never get out yet most of you want us to $pend $pend $pend on all these other countries when we have problems here.

Many of you are on me about Katrina. I made a simple mistake not metioning that. That IS a true problem area that needs more help. No, Brad and Angie CANT fix that on their own. But we as a nation can help out too.

It's funny how we all band together after such things like Sept. 11th and Katrina and we love our neighbors for a couple of months then suddenly that love is gone and we are back to our same old ways.

"It's the governments fault, let them fix it!!!"

To that I say Bull. Get up off your butts and do something to help out.

Don't kick the homeless guy when you walk by. Lend him a hand.
Volunteer, do what you can to make your community better.

Now where ever you folks think that message is full of hate or ignorance I truly feel sorry for you.

To Cindy: Angelina travels to these countries not seeking publicity for herself, but to use her celebrity to bring publicity to the plight of these people: it is far from self-serving.
And to those complain that she offers aid outside this country: is a person suffering in another country not deserving of help? Is hopelessness and despair not universal? Humans are humans, and political bounderies do not lessen the suffering of those who reside outside our borders. They do too are deserving of our help.

How about we look within our own country, The United States of America, and start helping each other live better lives. There are still homeless people, homes without running water and basic amenities. How can we go off and give to other countries as we crumble away from the inside out? We need to look at our country and start repairing our faults and improve our living conditions. America is a family, we need to start looking out for and taking care of our family. If we can't do that, then what is the point of calling our country, the United States of America?

There are many comments here about how celebrities are only seeking out photo ops. However, you can really tell what separates the p.r. seekers from the ones seeking to really help are the celebs that actually open their pocketbooks and give generous donations. Brad and Angelina have done that many times. Judge them by their donations, not the photo ops.

I still have a mother-in -law living in croatia, she is 90 this month . It wasn t till about 30 yrs ago did she have running water piped in . NOT HOT -COLD . 10 yrs ago she got her first toilet. She still cooks on a wood burning oven-that also keeps her small three room house warm.
The phone was installed somewere with in those yrs. All this could not of happened if her son (my husband) and I did not send her money to do this. And ,if she got it safely, because even today they censor the mail. SO.....if any one can start the ball rolling why shouldn't it be the PITTS, would any one else do it.

If the Appalachian's are that depressed then you should put your boots on and find a more prosperous place to start a new living. Well after reading several of the comments, I would say that most of you have too much time on your hands. I personally commend Brad and Angelina for their efforts. They dont have to do anything for anybody, but they choose to do so. Where they choose is entirely up to them! It's their money! They earned it! People seem to latch on to people that have alot of money and get jelous that they dont have it. Those are the 1st to criticize. As far as the people in this country that are poor and homeless I can somewhat sympathize, but a great majority of those ppl made choices in their life to end up that way. Our government is so screwed up when it comes to dishing out cash for those in need. It's to easy to get money in forms of unemployment, food stamps, free housing ect..ect.. The ppl who really need some help just dont know how to get it, while millions of ppl totally abuse the system wasting our hard earned tax dollars. Our system rewards people that dont want to work and pays to just keep popping out more kids. Alot of those ppl also work cash jobs and live better than the middle class with cable tv and buy deli meat/expensive prepared foods, smoking their pricey ciggarettes and consuming their booze. I've seen this on countless occasions.Again.. Good job Angelina and Brad!

Ragusa, if you only read CNN than yes there was wild Serbs killing everybody else for Greater Serbia.

There is one problem though. Math doesn’t lie. Serbs are most ethnically cleansed with far the largest refugee numbers.

If you want to know real truth Serbs were trying to preserve Yugoslavia for two reasons.
    1. They knew separation would be bloody. And it was.
    2. Serbs lived across Yugoslavia like many other nations and real separation was not possible. That was proven to be thruth too.

The project of Great Serbia never existed and it was used as negative labeling to enforce political interest.

Now, what really happen is that West was pushing Russia out of Southern Europe (rightfully so if I may add) and whoever was perceived as the obstacle in that process, they were mercilessly labeled as a bad guy and enemy of US. So Serbs were the target since they were slowing the advances with there fight for freedom. Serbs were only real friend of US and long term will remain only reliable partner of US in Balkans. Look at the history. These people who greeted now US in Balkans, greeted Hitler with the same passion and will welcome anyone else for that matter.

Here's the thing, if you live in the US, you have the opportunity to make your life whatever you want it to be. It doesn't matter where you come from, if you want a better life, you can make it for yourself here because this is a free country. The countries that Jolie/Pitt visit do not have the same freedoms and opportunities that we have. By drawing attention to these countries, it may in some way help to turn around the lives of the people there. Naysayers should probably put their money where thier mouth is and get off their collective butts and do something charitable instead of mouthing off. I'm just sayin'

Angelina visited Serbian refugees in Gorazde. In the first photo you can see Angie with Lena and Mara Babic, serbian women. You can see them holding colored eggs, custom in connection with Easter (muslims don't have this holiday). Interesting that CNN didn't mention this information. You have no idea how much media shapes your mind.

If Jolie is such a great person, why doesn't she and all the other spotlight hunting celebrities visit America's own displaced families. Why don't they use the money they get from the American people...to help the AMERICAN people, not these foreign countries. WE have people within our own borders that have been displaced, that are homeless, that are hungry, that need to be adopted. Why don't we take care of our own first!?!

Thank you Ms. Jolie and Mr. Pitt, for visiting this part of the world, it seems that many have turned their backs on this beautiful and a potentially great country. We had a War in the heart of Europe for 5 long years , yet little was done after how many people died Oh, Yes over 200,000. I pray for you two and thank you for giving us a day of positive news that so many people reacted to it.

There are no Bosnians/Bosniaks and things like that. There are Serbs (shown on these pictures), Croats and Muslims with negligable number of other minorities living in geografic region called Bosnia.
After forcefull destruction of Yugoslavia, by many parties and US was one, these people are forcefully kept together in the Country no one of them likes or wants. Paradox to be even greater they are forced together by the same forces that enforced destrustion of Yugoslavia. And that was done under pretence that they can not live together.
How they can live together in smaller Yugoslavia called Bosnia now?

CNN seems to be continuing push of political agenda instead of reporting the news.

    Ow help me please!
Whats is everyone here blablablaing about the goodwill of some 'famous person' to go and talk with the politcial leaders of a country. Shouldnt our politicians etc do these jobs? + as if there hasnt been enough talking done in Bosnia.

If you really want to help the poorest of the poor there: Look to the freaking EU! Borders should be opend between Bosnia and the EU. That will allow jobs to come to Bosnia (which has a lot of minerals in its mountains!) so even Europe can profit by opening the borders.
+ internal politics ar still verry poor with 3 presidents never agreein on anything. And that can only be solved if Serbia and Croatie come to a agreement on their Europe questions.

Maybe if we just invested in it, the people are willing. They dont mind working.

Arent our voted leaders the ones who are here to raise awareness for us? We dont need actors or singers to raise awareness, we already know its here. If it bothers you so much, then why dont you complainers do something about it. Instead of negatively attacking people who are trying to make a difference in the world, maybe you should get off your ass and do something constructive and not let someone else do the job youre complaining they arent doing.

I have very mixed emotions regarding the behavior of Angelina Jolie. She is a serial home wrecker with a social conscience. I totally agree with those who comment about the publicity that surrounds her actions. Are these humanistic efforts more about establishing her image? Truly great are those who make contributions to the world and don't seek recognition for them. There are many people that make overtures toward peace or humanitarian care throughout the world but don't practice the same in personal relationships. She controls so much of the media attention that she receives. Sadly, I can acknowledge the good that she tries to create in these public actions, but I don't consider her a person of strong character.

@Richard Karn: Admittedly I would not be as aware or as informed of these issues if I hadn't married a guy from that part of the world. But that doesn't mean I am influenced so strongly by my husband's "propaganda" that I cannot consider other versions and interpretations of events. He has never denied these war crimes, and when I express horror at what Serbs had to endure during war times all throughout history, he is quick to say that some factions on their side were also capable of cruelty and barbarity (Black Hand, Scorpions, Chetniks). The Serbian government did issue a formal report and apology for the war crimes committed, including Srebrenica, and are cooperating with international bodies to bring their leaders to trial. Of course there are whack jobs who are ultra nationalists, who deny everything, and who still wishes to unite the Balkans under a "Great Serbia". But as a nation in general, I think Serbians were unjustly portrayed since then as the ONLY aggressors among all the Yugoslav countries, while all the rest were more or less handled with kid gloves because they are more pro-West and don't have strong alliances with Russia and China. I like America, I really do. I think it's a great nation that has done a lot for the advancement of humanity as a whole, and is looked upon by the rest of the world as a leader, whether they admit it or not. But Clinton did not just "bomb some bridges". People died. A beautiful city was destroyed. Google that.

Looks like you bought into a lot of propaganda from your husband. Do some research outside his words you may be shocked at what you find. Google: "Srebrenica massacre" for example. Just because Clinton bombed some bridges doesn't excuse stuff like that. True all sides did atrocities but the Serbs were #1 at that. The best thing they can do is accept it as a black mark on their history and move on like what the Germans did with the holocaust. Denying it won't make them look any better.

Helping people is good, but this is not an entrance to HEAVEN. Jesus said in JOHN 14:6 "I AM THE WAY, THE TRUTH AND THE LIFE: NO ONE COMETH UNTO THE FATHER, BUT BY ME." If there is SOMETHING we can do to people that is ACCEPTABLE to GOD is to TALK to people that UNTIL NOW JESUS IS SAVING SOULS AND IS OFFERING THE BEST GIFT TO EVERY HUMAN BEING and this is the GIFT OF ETERNAL LIFE – HEAVEN. JOHN 3:16

I was amazed to most of the comments I've read about the humanitarian efforts that Brad and Angelina are "doing". These 2 people professed that they are atheists and yet people praised them. ANYTHING DONE APART FROM JESUS IS VERY VERY VERY BAD bcoz they are doing them for self interest. I believed that with JENNIFER ANISTON, BRAD IS MUCH BETTER OFF AS A PERSON. WHY? Because when Brad is with JENNIFER ANISTON Brad still believed IN GOD. This was shown by making their union LEGAL in the eyes OF GOD AND MAN. Angelina IS A VERY BAD INFLUENCE TO BRAD. She makes BRAD'S LIFE MISERABLE but pulling him away from GOD and it can be seen through Brad's appearance – MISERABLE AND UNHAPPY. Plus the fact the he admitted that he is BORED that's why he is sporting a muslim-like mustache. Their handlers want to KILL the issue of BOREDOM that's why the BOSNIA visit. I believed so.

I wish some people would get over the whole Bran and Jen breakup, it's been 5 years! They obviously weren't the perfect couple fans want to believe. They make it sound like Angelina forcibly took Brad away without his consent. Maybe if Jen wasn't too preoccupied with starring in a string of flops and spending more time with her trainer and her hairdresser, she would still be with Brad and have a couple of adorable babies. Jennifer made her choice, Brad got tired, and him and Angelina found in each other a partner with the same interest in family and humanitarian work. More power to all three of them.

I'm Asian but married to a Serb, and the best man at our wedding was a Bosnian Muslim. I've been to Serbia and it is a beautiful country. Horrible things did happen, and all sides suffered atrocities perpetrated by each other. I just wish that Serbia was not demonized by the biased Western media, and made to look like the only ones to blame for the whole conflict. What would the US or UK do if 10% of your land is being taken away by ethnic Albanians just because they settled there illegally and are now the majority in that area? Would you allow Texas to declare independence if Mexicans ever become the majority there? The US and their NATO allies bombed Serbia in 1999 for trying to contain the conflict in Kosovo. They hit bridges, hospitals, TV stations, the Chinese embassy in Belgrade, and imposed economic sanctions, the effects of which Serbia is only slowly overcoming now. The people I've met from all the former Yugoslav countries are happy that the bloody part of their history is over and are looking forward to developing their own nations and mending the image of that region to the rest of the world. I hope that it happens, for the sake of my future children who will probably live there one day.

Amen, Carrie! Those who find it so easy to condemn others, like Ms. Jolie, for reaching out to others throughout the world, and helping make all of us more aware of the needs of others, everywhere, really ought to take an honest look in the mirror and ask what they themselves are doing in their own lives to reach out and help those in need, wherever they are, in the US or elsewhere. There are people who are talkers/complainers, and then there are those who are doers. Which one of those ways of life do you want your family, nation and those in need, to remember that you were during your own life? Did you make an honest effort to make a positive difference in the lives of others, including those in need, or did you just sit on the sidelines of life, watch, and talk bad about those who did reach out and try to make a difference? It's never too late to get started, people, both here at home, and overseas. The choice is yours...

Those of us who have traveled and have seen what it's like for people living without sanitation, without water, without food, without money, without clothing and shoes – and no where to go, no one to help them, seriously. Actually, Jolie is an ambassador. Part of her job is to travel and address needs and issues on behalf of your country. And the poverty and famine in your own country is being promoted by your own government and the people who constantly believe that Socialism is tantamount to Communism. People are so afraid to lose what they have, whether it be control, money, freedom, they end up taking from their neighbour. And then when your president tells you to pull up your boot straps and reach out and help, you reach out and slap instead.

Jolie helps those who request and appreciate her support. Because the Americans don't seem to.

Please do not knock Jolie and Pitt for trying to do their part in helping people. I respect them for using their celebrity to help those less fortunate then themselves. At least they are trying to do something good in the world.

In reality, publicity is one of the best avenues to take in the process of addressing issues like this. When proper awareness is brought to an issue, usually more people will try to help. Pitt and Jolie have also donated money to different organizations in the past.

To the poster who said to take care for those within the US – Pitt did something a couple years ago where he tried to build houses for those left homeless after Hurricane Katrina. I'd say that qualifies as helping Americans back home. Also, Jolie had visited soldiers at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in the summer of 2009.

There is no comparison between the poor and homeless in America than the other war torn countries..most of the homeless in America are poor and homeless by choice because they are either on drugs or have mental illnesses and they don't want to be helped, otherwise there are all kinds of organizations, welfare and charities available for these kinds people in America but the same isn't true for other countries that is these people go to those places to help

The Jolie-Pitts have donated millions out of their own pockets, which is more than I bet any of you haters would do. And they do help those in their own backyard as well. They moved to New Orleans and have contributed greatly to efforts to rebuild it. Geeezz.
People who want to tear apart others wo are doing good and say, "well that just isn't good enough" are PATHETIC!!
Even if all they did was use their fame to bring issues to light, that would actually be enough. But they do a lot more.

I truly pity the people that stoop to insult two individuals that are making an honest effort to enrich the lives of people all over the world and not just in the US. Show me the poorest guy on the street corner panhandling for a few bucks in this country and you will see someone that is living a much easier life than millions of people in those other countries. If all you can do is spread your negativity and insult people that are at least trying to help others then YOU are the ones that are poor.

Regardless of their chosen lifestyle or how they choose to raise their children, they have earned the right to be respected and appreciated for all they have done.

I'm confused as to why people in the U.S. are somehow considered more valuable than others around the world. We don't somehow need to help people in our own country more than those in the rest of the world. People are people.

I'm amazed at people that want to be critical. I've heard enough from these two celebrities to know they're intelligent people, and I don't imagine all the press they get is something they enjoy that much after all these years. So, they use it to direct people toward causes that are worth thinking about. How can you be critical of that? They give time and money to causes all over the world, including in the U.S. After all the volunteer work I've done myself, I can tell you the most rewarding thing you can do is help others. Considering Angie's emotional issues we've seen in the past, doing these things is also good for her. She probably does get something out of it, but I don't think the publicity is what she seeks.

Give them both a break and allow them to do some good in the world. It is so much more than most people can claim about themselves.

I am so tired of seeing photo ops with Angelina and Brad in situations that they have NO IDEA about, and never will. Too easy to fly in for a few hours, look concerned, and fly off to an expensive hotel...Everyone says "isn't that nice that they visited..." Sure, their visits might raise awareness, as in "oh, that's too bad". I'd like to hear about actual, tangible CHANGE. If all the people that have commented positively on this story (300+) actually were moved to donate money or time just because Angelina and/or Brad had , I might change my mind.

There was an "Against Piracy" campaign that mentioned there are other people involved in the making of these movies who are going to be hurt with piracy not just the actors – Then why aren't actors willing to cut their salaries to pay for these behind the scene workers? Why do I want to pay $13.50 for these morons? Can you believe how much these people get paid for being lucky (not beautiful but lucky), right place at the right time and for being a drop out.

We put so much money in their pockets because we want to be entertained for a few hours, and they run away from California at a mere mention of a TAX Increase because they want to maximize their profit and rob us blind, and give nothing back.

All of those people who are wondering why nobody is helping the Serbian families... here is an answer for you.....because Serbian people were the ones who started the war in Bosnia. They were the ones who wanted to take over the entire country and call it Serbia. They were the ones who were trying to do the ethnic cleansing in Bosnia. It is beause of them that Bosnian people are spread around the world even to this day. Bosnian people were FORCED to leave their country in order to survice. Serbs thought that they would be happy if they took over Bosnia and if they killed all the muslims. Yet, their lives are so miserable. If you ever get a chance to go there and visit you can feel how all of their cities are so empty and so depressing. When we were all living together, the Bosnian muslims were the joy and highlight of their lives. Now, that things have changed they live very depressing lives on their own. I would inform people to do research in order to know the truth. As far as myself, I was there during the war ...I am telling you the truth based on my experience. I agree with this statement "hand over the war criminals to the Hague and then perhaps the UN will help Serbians". God is watching over the Bosnian people and protecting them. Thanks to Angelina and Brad for their support and understanding. Bosnian people have very big hearts and are thankful for even the smallest things that come their way. Thank God for the oportunity to come to America. God Bless President Bill Clinton for allowing this to happen and for saving my life and for keeping me and my family safe from the enemies.

I do agree with what Jolie and Pitt are doing, there is a lot of poverty in the world, the conditions that those people are living in are horrendous. And this needs to be known to everyone. The sad thing is that it’s just not in Bosnia, but all over the world. Most of us who live in the US and have it good, have absolutely no idea as to what is going on in other parts of this country much less the world. I also agree that there isn’t much done by individuals in the public eye, such as the movie stars, here in the US. We have people in the United States (the wealthiest nations in the World) that do not know how to read, that do not have a safe home, that do not have there own washrooms, but out houses. That is soooo unbelievably sad to have this going on in this country. Our government is not doing much to fix this problem, because simply they don’t care. And those who have money and power, people like Jolie and Pitt, choose to go out side of this country to make people aware of poverty in other countries, but what about in the US. I have yet to see those type of individuals go to parts of this country and let the world know how some of our people live. People like Madonna, Pitt and Jolie, adopt kids from other countries, but what about the kids who are homeless and in foster places here in the US? I’m not disagreeing with what they are doing, it’s great that they help people, but what about people that need help here? Who’s helping them, and if they are being helped, why isn’t it publicized, why don’t we see this?

I am an American, but I LOVE Bosnia and vacationed there two years ago (search YouTube for "Bosnia Vacation"...I'm pretty sure I'm number one on the list). I still have about $500 U.S. dollars' worth of Bosnian currency which I found out is completely useless outside of Bosnia (it's not possible to convert "convertible marks" back into dollars outside of Bosnia...I didn't know this before I left the country).

Anyway, I'd like to know what to do with this money. It's useless to me...and could do a LOT of good in Bosnia. My only stipulation is that I will not give it to a religious organization...it must be a secular organization. Do you have any suggestions? Reading some of these comments are pretty funny to me. I don't understand why people think Jolie and Pitt are out helping people for publicity, helping people to make money, or even funnier, why are they not helping people here in the US? First of all, why would you bring such negativity to something positive that they're both trying to do? Second, if you're so concerned about the people out here in the US, then why not start with yourself? Go out there and help other people in need. Travel other countries (3rd world countries), see their way of living and then criticize. Lots of kids in different countries are without food and EDUCATION from the day they were born to the day they leave this life. This topic can go on and on. I just think people need to leave them alone and let them do what they LOVE to do. Not criticize them for something YOU can't do!

My family just returned from Bosnia in September, 2009. These people are some of the kindest, caring, and self-sacrificing people that I know. They love it when Americans come to their country to see what they have accomplished since our American soldiers gave their lives for their freedom. The Bosnians have been through so much, yet they move on each day making the best of their lives.
Thank you Angelina for taking time to see and touch this special group of people. More Americans need to experience this beautiful country.

As someone who was born and raised in "Appalachia" and graduated from Appalachian State University, and now LIVES in Bosnia, I would like to invite Joel (and any of the others who are attempting to compare the hardships of the two locations) for a visit. There is absolutely NO comparison. The United States gives people endless possibilities to improve their lives; myself being one citizen who took advantage of these opportunities. As far as I am aware, tens of thousands of citizens were not killed in wars in the Appalachian Mountains in the last two decades. Please come visit, and you will see why humanitarian relief efforts (no matter who backs them) are essential to this part of Europe. I am serious, I will mail you a plane ticket. We can tour here in Bosnia & the war torn and devastated parts parts of Serbia, and then we can fly back to Charlotte and drive hours up into the Appalachian Mountains. And we can pick you up a Starbucks at Walmart on US Hwy 321 along the way. I am certain you will have a change of heart if you accept my offer. No, these people here were not born in the States, but they are some of the kindest, most generous, and most welcoming citizens I have had the pleasure to meet. (This includes Bosniaks AND Serbs). They are also extremely hard working, and dedicated to improving their lives, but finding it impossible due to endless miles of political red tape and arguing selfish politicians. Please, come visit, and I assure you, you will fall in love with this part of the world, and next time, will be defending it, instead of criticizing people who wish to help it.

I commend Angelina and Brad for being cultured and selfless Americans, and hope that more of us will follow in their footsteps. Thanks Y'all AND Puna Hvala.

I lived through Bosnian war in 1992-1993, the country is still in very bad shape even after 18years. I'm thankful to people like Angelina Jolie who are trying to help people of Bosnia. To Bill Nash: If you ask Bosnian people, international community were responsible in part for the Civil War in Bosnia. They let serbs kill on thousands and thousands innocent people and on the end they gave them a big rewards, most of the country to control it. It is International problem, because they created it.

Saying Angelina is looking for publicity is like saying Tiger wanted the world to know about his affair. They are not looking for media attention, media finds THEM. That's what media sharks do for a living – find a story people are going to talk about, even if it's none of their or their readers' business.

Jolie should pester the Bosnian government to get with the program. There is no reason after 15 years since the end of the war that the government could not have moved these people and trained them for any number of jobs. The goverment of Bosnia is responsible, NOT the international community.

I am so sick of hearing idiots knock Angelina Jolie because she is with Brad Pitt. She is not a homewrecker. You ever wonder why Anniston can't keep anyone she dates? You dont see her doing anything constructive with her money and time. Angelina has been involved with the UN for years and has donated millions of her own money to causes all over the world. She and Brad have children together. They are more together and married than he and Anniston ever were. Get over it folks, move on. You should be supporting this strong, intelligent woman with a heart for what she does not what you think she might have done years ago, which is not true anyway. And if you are asking why she isnt helping her fellow Americans, you need to educate yourself and stop judging her.

Can anyone remember the quote "one person at a time"
If each one of us takes a moment to help our neighbor we can accomplish great things . To complain that someone is helping others is not welcome. Yes we have misfortune in this country so those of you who feel someone should do something in this country ,,,you be the one to start volunteering in a worthy cause .

Jolie and Pitt ,yes have more resources then many of us,and can travel but I bet many of you can only travel a few miles perhaps ,blocks before you come upon a person or population that needs help.

Each one of us as a human being has a responsibility to help, not just the rich and famous because they have money. Did you see the smiles in those pictures by Jolie, people need to know they are loved and thought of.
I have been having great difficulty but just gave someone some money to help pay a bill. The family was so appreciative and it made a differnece.
Do not disparage people for helping others.

One by one we can make a difference in this country so please volunteer, take someone under your wing and help.

There are many resources in this country and one of them is each one of us.

Wow. Someone does good any good and it's blasted.

To the guy who actually said he walks past some of the poorest people in the world in Boston... try looking at the truly POOR in other parts of the world and then try to say they are some of the poorest. Of course we need to help our needy here at home and so much more can and should be done. But that is not the only need in this world. Our poor generally still have some sort of safety net somewhere. In other parts of the world there are no safety nets, parents literally watch their children starve to death for true lack of food as there IS NOT FOOD AVAILABLE. I've been poor and yet there were food banks, there were shelters, there was assistance. There are many places in this world that have none of that. Poor in Boston, true. Not the poorest in the world though. Our poor still live better than many in this world and that is a blessing. Still, when you're hungry, you're hungry and when you have no home, it doesn't matter you are in this world, you are without shelter.

Bringing awareness to the plight of others is not a horrible thing. Whatever their motivation, they are helping another human being.

Everyone of us starts out to do good, no one starts out intentiionally to do bad!!! Each does what they can, it can be huge head lines to standing in a line at til and giving that dime so some one can pay for a purchase for no other reason than to be nice. There are two people and I won't speak their names because this is about them, they try yes try to do positive, yet all anyone can do is find negative in such simple acts, get a grip on your lives, it's a story!!! Every country has good and bad, ever single one!!! It does not matter where in the world you live!!! We do what we can when we can, what more must there be!!! I'm sure I will catch all get out for this but, be nice do good, there is no measure on doing a kindness, there is just doing!!!

As one person said; I am sure brad and Angelina would do with a lot less of the publicity they get on a day to day basis- they do NOT need these types of situations to earn more, all they need to do is go to braekfast. Even if she did do it for a report to be written, it makes up for the hundreds of lies that are written about her and her family on a weekly basis. Who cares if she was directed there by the UN, the fact of the matter is she is helping, she said yes. Taking time away from her family and time out of her personal life to raise awareness. The fact of the matter is everyone around the world needs help. Not everyone can reach every country or make a diffrence. So the ones who have the money and resources, like Angelina, go to other countires and not the US. Another fact is the US has the most resources, glam, and education oppourtunities, yet we are so picky, needy, and feel like nothing is ever good enough. We butt into so many peoples lives and never focus on what is right in front of us. Like those talking about how much Brad and Angelina have and how they volunteer for publicity. Why do you hate them so much to say that? Get ahold of yourselves.

Jolie/Pitt are just finger puppets, they go where their handlers point them. Everybody who'd ever been to the area knows that Bosnians committed as much atrocity against Serbs as visa versa, and that Albania is simply a criminal nation. NATO chose to side with Bosnians and Albanians in the Yugoslavian conflict only so that the West can throw a bone to the Islamists, in the spirit of "the enemy of my enemy is my friend." At the time, sticking it to the Russians by abusing Serbs came as a nice bonus. It's all politics. The West doesn't really care about Balkan people, because there is no oil there or anything else that could prove useful.

Look, I bring up Detroit because it too is in the news as of late.

My point is that Angie and Brad are doing fabulous work and I wish them well. I JUST WISH OTHER FAMOUS FOLKS would take their lead and do something MORE around our part of the world.

The people of Detroit CAN'T fix Detroit because they are ONE of THE HARDEST HIT areas of this economy. That's not negative speak. That is REAL.

I know this will be right in your wheel house Angela, but I understand Madonna is over seas building a school for girls. Why couldn't she (for example) take THAT money and help out her home town and build that school there??? You know, give BACK to your community.

If more "rich folks would step up and put their heart and soul into a "special project" we could rid our selves of violence and crime and maybe just MAYBE live in a better place. A place where opinions can be shared with out name calling. After all, opinions are like belly buttons. There all different and some stink.

Wake up morons. Don't believe every single evil, negative thing you hear about someone else because you want to. It makes your own miserable lives seem less miserable, is that it? Just remember, in America, we have public schools that allow our children to get an education (paid for by the American taxpayers) and allow children to make something of themselves, not just live in the backward hills of the Ozarks and stay stupid and inbreed. If people who have children do not want to bring them up correctly and get them educated, who are we to interfere? We want to keep our government out of our private lives, right? I only care if I have to support them on Welfare! No government interference in how we bring up our children!! Not in America. That would be socialism.

Charity is an option and it is their choice where they will spend the money they have earned. Because the money is not mine, I do not have a say where/who (I think) they should sent money too. They are both truly giving people and should be acknowledged with what they HAVE done and not what we think they should do with something that is not ours.

Interesting choice of words there Joel – And why do you think people listen more to entertainers now than politicians?

Do you think it might be because WE, the American people, know how truly interested/competent our leading politicians have been in solving our own problems in recent history?

Gee – how much faith do you think the residents of New Orleans have in George W Bush and team? It's been four and a half years since Katrina hit and there are still big parts of N.O. that are rotting away.

As the most powerful and wealthy nation on the planet, if we cannot help our own then shame on us collectively – but don't crap on others (celebrities or common folks) who choose to pour their efforts into places that truly have no option but to rely on help from the outside world!

Good job to you two. Many of us here wish people like Angelina and Brad being the most powerful influencial people in Hollywood should do the same thing instead of flockering around with new clothes and brand new car. Reading about it that she looks stunning or wow that great dress looks good on her. I wonder if these glamorous Hollywood star ever had any idea how to live in poverty aside from those who made it through like Oprah Winprey. I know I did for ten years before I moved in the United States.
Looks and money does not get you any where it does not buy happiness and it sure does not give brain. No wonder Brad went from a 9 to a 10. Angelina has done many wonderful charities not just overseas but also here in the United States. Yes we do have poverty here but we also have means of acquiring it you just have to be proactive. These people will be caught dead if they even try to get help on their own.

As for butt head above, are there poor people in Appalachia, yes there always have been and if people choose to live there, there always will be, because you can't drive a tractor trailer through the mountains. No highways, no trucks, no trucks, no manf. goods, no manf. goods no factories, no factories no jobs, no jobs, people are going to be poor. Same reason there are no jobs at the north or south pole. However this is America, you can move to an area where the job market is better. You both are ignorant. Joel T; why don't the people of Detroit fix Detroit?
Jim: the Jolie-Pitts dropped more money in N.O. than any other person, not government. Jim, how much have you donated? What about your time?

This negative talk about fixing the US really irritates me. How much money have our politicians stolen from us? And you want the Jolie-Pitts to fix it? That makes no since. We have a pretty strong and organized system in place, apparently no here wants to fix the corruption in the US. Yet everyone wants to criticize people who VOLUNTEER their time away from their precious children and very busy (successful careers) to help bring awareness to people who have NO idea what even our poorest here take for granted.

If you want Detroit "fixed"...go fix it instead of posting your negative opinions here. YOU go fix it, you get involved IF it means that much to you!

I think it's great when people work so hard to help others.I think the problem people are having is because of their high profile life, they are getting 'all' the attention..They have millions and the time and the effort they put out is small compared to the unsung humanitarians that have worked their whole lives and have actually sacrificed much to help.
These two ride in with camera crews and the publicity over shadows the rest of the work and the people working at it.
They go home to their mansions and their high profile lives light years away from the suffering. And the images of them sitting in the muck and mire with these people seems to be the ones people focus on.
But they are not 'living the life' these poverty stricken people are..They are swooping in offering help and attention then going back to the wealth they life.
So don't be so quick to condemn those that are not so star struck with them..
Yeah they do good..But they are not saints. A lot of this is publicity..

For those attacking them for not helping in the US, you should do a bit of reading. They were the first to step up and help following Katrina. They actually own a house in New Orleans and Brad has led and funded a major reconstruction effort in the city. http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20052779,00.html Sadly, some bonehead will attack this effort.

    She is a great warrior!

For those who raise question about why she doesn't bring awareness to the less civilized and very poor/uneducated or US orphans here in the states is simple; we have every advantage being born in the US. We have programs in place, social services, and monies to help us attain certain goals, though we fall short. Yes, we have corruption in the US but NO where near as unfortunate as the refugees written about in this particular article.

When I see Angelina smile like in the first picture in this article, it always moves me. You rarely see her smile so genuinely while promoting a movie...why? She knows where the real heart and meat of the soul is, not on a red carpet, but truly caring to bring attention to the truly less fortunate.

Those of you who are complaining are right though, you should be bitter, mainly because you truly are the ugly and sad people you perceive yourselves to be. Interesting. No mention at all about Serbian refugees as if the Serbs didn't suffer during the war. Anyone hear of Naser Oric? Does anybody know what happened to Serbs not only in the Balkan wars of the 1990's but during WWII when Bosnian Muslims and Croatian Ustache committed genocide against the Serbian people? Of course not because it doesn't fit the conventional lies that the Serbs are the only guilty people in all of the conflicts that have afflicted the Balkans. The Serbs are the only people of the ones mentioned that consistently sided with the USA, Britain, and France in the two major wars of the 20th century and the thanks they get is to be put on their knees and labelled mass murders. All it's weapons went into Serbian fascistic forces, that were used later against civilians. Always running off to some other country when charity begins right here at home. And always running off to adopt some kid from some other country too."

George, I don't consider these two "Hollywood types" at all. They spend the majority of their time away from Hollywood. And as many have already pointed out here, Jolie is a Goodwill Ambassador for REFUGEES. If you want to help, you have to pick something. You can't do everything. I'm sure she wishes that some of her millionaire coworkers would get out of the tanning booths and pick up some of the slack.

As far as helping people in YOUR country, she has said many times that she is a citizen of the world. She doesn't define people by the boundaries that separate them; we are all human beings and have to care for each other no matter where we live. Why does it matter to you that she rescued and adopted three children (saving one of them from certain death) from other countries? What makes children in YOUR country more worthy?

I really just love how people are so quick to judge others, especially when something GOOD is being done. AJ is *NOT* getting paid for these visits (she actually donates 1/3 of her income) and she spends a considerable amount of time and money of her OWN bringing attention to serious world issues, (unlike Jen Anniston who frolicks around in Mexico on vacay most of her time). So even if you don't like AJ as an actress or don't agree with her personal life choices, she is still doing some extraordinary work, putting her life in danger in order to bring some hope to some dark places of the world. So those of you pessimistic negative people (CM, JD, Joel T, Adam, anti-Angie, Lou, etc) need to take a hard look at yourselves in the mirror and stop transferring your own self-loathing onto her and deal with your own problems. Furthermore, it is HER perogative if she has 6 houses or 100 and buys expensive furniture, it is HER money and she can do with it what she pleases. Get a life!!!!

And then, instead of having such a ridiculously big house, downsize and whatever money is saved give to the needy. come on people, quit making this woman out to be such a Saint! She lives in these huges houses (they own many) , wrecks families, and wears expensive clothes and then goes Overseas to impoverished countries and Americans treat her like a Saint. NOT ME!

Angelina is not the right person to be out there trying to bring attention to urgent humanitarian matters. She should be removed as a UN ambassador because of all of her current and past controversies (i.e. adultery, making out with her brother....) I'd rather see more respectable people out there like George Clooney or Sandra Bullock.

How many homes, hummers and bling do you need. By sharing your wealth with a family in need, I'm not saying not to reward yourself for having made it, but look how many athletes and stars get on drugs cause their depressed or bored. Once they would start to see they can actually make a difference in peoples lives the world would start to reach the great divide where human suffering ceases to exist and everyone could achieve what they strive for. not held down by classes and lack of basic needs. What a world this could be!!

The facts are across all factions, people were systematically tortured. I have worked with Croatians, Bosnians, and Serbs that suffered. No one side was innocent. The Serbs are and had been driven out of Kosovo. The Muslims were driven out of Kosovo during Milosevic's reign. But make no mistake, all parties are to blame. Does that justify a separate country called Bosnia? Should Kosovo be a separate country?

Explain to me what is a Kosovar? Is that a Serb, Croatian or only a Muslim that came from Albania? Remember when 'they' were liberated? They waved the Albanian flag. Maybe southern Texas and California should be a separate state since the majority of those people are Mexican. There legislators are not Mexican nor is Spanish the recognized language in those reasons. Sounds like they have the same moral conviction that the 'Kosovars' had in claiming independence.

I am glad that some light has been brought back to the situation. Everyone I met, whether Bosniac or Serbian, had a happy heart and strong handshake – it didn't matter if they were Christian or Muslim. I still find it incredible that even after all this time there are still forgotten populations of people who found themselves living on the wrong side of an invisible line.

I don't care if it's Angelina Jolie or not – there are a lot of good people who deserve the same basic amenities we take for granted in the USA.

I am shocked and horrified at the rate of ignorance with world affairs that some have shown. It is this communication of lies that I find offensive in some of the comments.

A posted comment said "finally someone brought it up! Where were all those celebrity humanitarians when Serbian children were being bombed, when Serbian women were raped by Bosnian Muslims, when 14 century Serbian monasteries were destroyed?"

First of all, in reference to the Bosnian war, this information is absolutely false and historically inaccurate. The Serbs, under president Slobadan Milosevic, were the ones that committed the rapes of thousands of Muslim women and children; the Serbs also slaughtered thousands of men and boys in an attempt to eradicate all Muslims. By the end of the genocide in Bosnia at the hand of the Serbs, over 200,000 Muslim civilians had been systematically murdered. More than 20,000 were missing and feared dead, while 2,000,000 had become refugees, not to mention, the thousands of women and young girls that were raped by the Serbs.

Chocked by the atrocities in the center of Europe, the US and the UK joined forces to end that genocide.

Secondly, it is shameful of anyone, who has not been victimized or dehumanized in anyway, to make light of the suffering and murder of thousands of people who were killed for no crime of their making.

The issue is not about J or B., it is about the sense of apathy and cynicism people in the US are showcasing these days; when has it become the norm, to chuckle and/or belittle other people's tragedies and seek to hit back at those that are the most vulnurable?

I really do not think that Brad Pitt's name has to do with any of Angelina's success or fame. She is just dragging him along with her because he looks sad and homely . Angelina does do a very good job when it comes to human relations in third world countries for the main reason that she actually enjoys doing the work to get away from the Hollywood glit and glam. Unlike other Hollies (female-Hollywood actresses) (male-Holls) she has actually tried to help the third world countries out of oppression where others have only helped because they were trying to sell a new book and needed a convenient photo opportunity.

It's disheartening to see so many people complaining about someone who is doing humanitarian work. I mean - complaining about someone doing humanitarian work? Really? It says more about you than it does the humanitarian.

Would you all be much happier if Jolie helped Gaza, Serbia, the poor in the foothills, the homeless in Boston, poor children in Detroit, in addition to what she already does? Good Lord. Why in the world are you placing all the problems in the world on this one woman's shoulders?

    I don't get it.

She can't do everything. She chose to work with refugees, and offered her help to the UNHCR many years ago. She takes the press with her not for publicity for HER, but because the whole point of the trip is to raise awareness. A visit without the press is pointless; most refugees in these countries don't have a clue who she is.

I really hope, for the sake of humanity, that the seething disgust with her humanitarian work doesn't have to do with her partner's ex-wife. Because if people will hate someone who is helping those who can't help themselves, just because of what they perceive as a perfect marriage torn apart by an evil temptress, and will not acknowledge humanitarian work based on this fantasy borne of tabloid media, then we definitely need help in our own country!

She is always posing for a photo op which makes her mission seem very insincere. She could be doing goodwill work quietly, behind the scenes without the photographer's acknowledging her. The celebrities are always posing for cameras and so self absorbed.

Angelina should pay closer attention to the sad and often tragic foster care program in the country that brought her wealth. We have beautiful
children who've suffered awful emotional, neglect, and terrible physical abuse, and are in foster homes waiting and hoping for a forever home. At 18 when these children are dumped out of foster care, they have no where to go and no support system. It seems that getting tatoos in Thailand and adopting Thai children is her schtick and it's been working. Those of your who think this is so wonderful should investigate our pitiful, underfunded child welfare and child protective services, then urge Angelina to look closer to home.

Angelina is an ambassador for the UNHCR - United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. This isn't a US-based organization; it's a UN organization, so it only makes sense that they are concerned with the plight of refugees all around the world. I'm sure she herself doesn't choose each place she visits; I would imagine the UNHCR has a hand in that. She and Brad have donated millions of dollars of their money and Lord knows how many hours of their time to help several different causes. If Angelina creates publicity for the plight of the people in the places she visits, who cares if she gets a little free publicity along the way. I think they set a good example, not just for other celebrities, but for all of us. I hope they keep doing what they do.

Too bad their agencies don't remember that Osama bin Laden was the leader of the Muslim insurgency to create an Islamic state in Europe.

How about going to the other displaced groups from Serbia, Croatia, Kosovo, etc? Is that the best you can do – Really!

why not help people here? because unlike third world countries, we have ample funds and resources to help our own but we chose not to do anything. we don't demand more money for our school systems and help for people in need. in fact, whenever there is a proposal for more school funding and an increase to public services, we complain about paying more taxes, how greedy teachers are for wanting more money, how people should help themselves and not ask for public assistance. so damn angelina jolie for trying to bring awareness to the people of bosnia. maybe they can help themselves too but tax payers won't support the work though i doubt that.

I think it's amazing how we (people in general) are capable of complaining, even when someone is doing a good thing.

First of all: JOEL – what have you done to help your neighbors? Charity isn't the only thing... sometimes, just spending time with someone, listening to that person... just that is of huge help!

Second: If every person that spends time complaining of their great life, spent time doing something good, or taking care of their own lifes, if only that... the world would be better...

And come on people, how many artists do you see travelling to poor/dangerous and sometimes unknown countries to show to the rest of the world their stories? Uhm? I haven't seen Oprah, or Britney or anybody else latelly, have you?!

My point is, even if they are getting paid (which I doubt) to go to Bosnia, they are showing us (the rich part of the world) how good we have, and that the least that we could do is STOP COMPLAINING AND JUST DO SOMETHING to help who is in need!

She is a U.N. AMBASSADOR...her position requires her to work with the UNITED NATIONS. How anyone can judge her/them for taking their position seriously is beyond me. You're picking on Angelina for being famous and if it were up to her, since she has acquired quite the bankroll from Hollywood, I bet she would pursue her Humanitarian efforts more than her movie career. Although, she has managed a way to manipulate Hollywood to her advantage at times by giving proceeds she earns to her philanthropic endeavors.

I'm baffled at the perceived ignorance of many of you that judge. Just because THIS article appears on CNN you completely neglect to do any research on any of the domestic work they have done. It's a real shame that you can't see the forest through the trees.

God Bless them for taking time out of their busy lives and making the world a better place. Bringing a light to countries that are out of the spotlight that need attention as much, if not more, than others. Yes, we have people here who need help...so does EVERY CONTINENT ON THE PLANET! We are part of the HUMAN RACE...suffering needs to end WORLD WIDE.

You possess the power to change how you react in these comment threads. To comment negatively to something that is ONLY doing GOOD, is a sad thing. Commend them for not just sucking off of their stardom. If you had the chance to be famous and visit a country as impoverished as some of the countries these two visit, or head to a white sandy beach somewhere...consider what you would do and then look up to the heavens and THANK GOD that there are people who use their power for GOOD and not EVIL and actually *choose* to do so. Why do you all get so angry at her for doing st positive and not at the hosts of other filthy rich people (celebrities or not) who do nothing at all but worry about their suvs, hairdos, fashion, you name it?

Why should she not use her celebrity to raise attention to misery? Any of us could try and go there to do the same you'll see how many people will actually stop to listen. No one! If not celebrities, who then?

Focus your indignation the right direction and maybe even start with yourselves to see (proportionally to your own financial/time possibilities of course) how much you can do. You'd be surprised what a difference a couple of hours volunteering a week at a shelter does for people. Most of this cost nothing but time and love.

I am sure she does NOT get paid to do this. If anything, the flights and accommodation, but I bet not even that! I don't think any of those celebrities who act as ambassadors for any organization gets paid, period.

You would be surprised how much insight and ideas a non-political figure can bring to problems. Why would she not be able to discuss the issues and help find solutions?

Villifying someone for not helping "the right people" is absurd. I'm not even a fan of the girl, but when was the last time we thought of the displaced in Bosnia? She is doing what she needs to do as an ambassador. Bringing to light stories like this is a perk. If people think about the situation because a celebrity is there, great, maybe someone who can help will. That's really the point. It's also my understanding that they are both doing there part to help with the re-stabalization of New Orleans, which last I checked was inside of the United States. @ donna, they have helped here in the US. they have an organization that has helped rebuild NOLA and have contributed millions of dollars rebuilding NOLA. They do a TON of charity work, it has nothing to do with photo ops, Jolie has been doing this for years, long before all this crap about her trying to find a photo op, long before anyone knew she was doing it, take a look into things before making rash decions and make rud comments. you people are the reason why america will keep eating itself from the inside, instead of waiting for others to do things and critizing those for helping others wether its here or another country....which btw those people have it sooooo much worse than we could ever imagine, many have no education adn live in complete squalor, no water, food, sleepng on dirt, being shot at, having a war completly tear your country apart is worse than anyone can imagine, Please take a trip to Iraq, Bosnia, Kosovo, Afghanistan, Africa, and than come back and tell me how bad you really have it, they don;t have welfare or a community to help or angel tree or meals on wheels, they have none of this. Please make sur your contributing in more ways than just a christmas donation to people in need before you put others down, go help the old lady down the street clean her house, get groceries, give blankets and food to the homeless, not just the ones who can get to the soup kitchens, help build homes and watch children for those who can't afford daycare and most of all DO not put down others, people lets stop with the negativity.

The comments questioning why she isn't helping people in the U.S. – couple of things. Maybe there's too much red tape to deal with? Maybe even the people who need help here still manage to have running water and electricity for the most part? I know people on welfare with flat screen tvs...so how needy are they?

Finally, instead of begrudging the little bit of positive someone is doing (even a "one day fly in") maybe do something for your community yourself? Ever do a food drive? Clothing drive? Donate free time to tutor at the local library? Help the elderly? Maybe do those things yourself. But, I know it's easier to complain about how someone else is not doing enough. It's easier to be part of the problem rather than part of the solution.

    >why can't help being given to our citizens?

Pitt and Jolie moved to New Orleans not too long after Hurricane Katrina to bring awareness to the city's lingering storm-related problems, and Pitt himself has spearheaded a huge undertaking (financed at least in part by his own money) to build high-quality, affordable, storm-resistant homes for New Orleans residents displaced by Hurricane Katrina. So it's untrue that they are not helping US citizens - and this is just one example.

Angelina and Brad visit countries that are considered underdeveloped nations and they have actual discussions with their political and world leaders in those countries...

I think they are so smart/inspirational to use their fame to get this type of information out to the public so the rest of the world can see how others are living so we can remember to be grateful for who and what we have in our lives.

As a country we SHOULD be helping those in our own country. However, we as a people need to be the ones to step up and do it. I think it is a great thing that people like Jolie and Pitt provide publicity to the people that nations as great as ours should not be ignoring. Yet, if we want something done about the people in our own country, we need to step up and do something about it and stop expecting our government to just know what we want them to do. If you do nothing else, speak up and let your voice be heard. Even a small group repeating the same thing over and over to the government will eventually be heard.

it's good to see famous people doing something about world poverty and all the other crap that no one pays attention to until these folks bring it to the limelight. although well off, they can't finance all these problems, the solution lies often times with the political and social systems.

    @ Joel/Rudy

I think it's great to volunteer anywhere Joel, and what you do for those people is wonderful. However, I have to agree with Rudy somewhat. I hate it when people say why not help our own as if people in other places of the world are not as important. They loves their children and families just as much as we do. They deserve basic necessities as we all do. Even the poorest of the poor in the US is no comparison to other third world countries.

Brad and Angie are spending millions in the 9th ward of NOLA, that's New Orleans, LA, USA. Do some research before you say they aren't doing anything in the US. Brad has been one of the few driving forces to help rebuild NOLA.

Brad and Angie have numerous charities they are dedicated to within USA, just visit: http://www.looktothestars.org/celebrity/2-angelina-jolie. I still don't comprehend how people can say vile things about this couple and their children through USA media outlets. I don't even live in USA but know the charities they are affiliated with globally including in USA. People should stop whining and embrace Brad & Angie's good deeds. Angie has the most beautiful, sincere and warm smile, she’s loved globally for her beauty, talent and most of all her humanitarian work, how could you people hate her for that???.By the way, Angie is also a member of the affluent CFR organization and she does have direct access to world leaders, she gets a lot done for what she’s credited for, God bless JPs.

Jolie and Pitt are just humans and cannot solve world hunger or bring world peace, thus they cannot solve every issue there is around the world or in the US. They can only pick and choose a limited number of projects that they can commit too. Since Jolie is working for the United Nations focusing on Refugee issues, it's completely understandable that she picked projects that concerned refugees. So don't blame her that she didn't focus on poor people on Virginia Hills. Even though they're wealthy movie stars & super famous, they've limited ability. If all the powerful world leaders and super rich philanthropists (like Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, etc.) can only solve a small portion of the problems existed in the world today, don't blame Jolie-Pitt for trying to make a difference with the projects they chose.

Wow. Firstly, whatever they do on their own time is their choice, etc. My only reason for commenting is to clarify:

All these comments criticizing about how they're not helping citizens and only one person knew about their work with Katrina. google Brad Pitt and housing in NOLA and you may be surprised by what you find. He has created house designs to build safe houses/communities quickly, and get the folks out of those trailers. They bought a house down there to be closer to the work they do. etc etc etc.

I'm just sayin...how much more do you want these folks to do?

The Jolie-Pitt clan has various organizations they contribute to around the world, including the US. As a goodwill Ambassador, Angelina visits these places to see what is needed so she knows where to focus her efforts. And, anyway, the last I heard, there were no war-torn areas in the US. There are areas still affected by Katrina and various other disasters. However, other celebrities (and LOTS of non-celebriteis) contribute to those efforts. Everyone has their own pet cause; but no one can do it all. I applaud the efforts of everyone who risks their life/comfort/whatever to help another person or animal, no matter where it is. It's all needed in all areas of the world.

She should have visited refugee camps in Serbia, where there are still 250.000 Serbian refugees from Bosnia, Croatia and Kosovo.
She acts on suggestions from politically influenced UN ignoring obvious victims and promoting biased and selective assistance.
Being so visible, she has no right anymore to be also so ignorant!

People who say that they are just looking for publicity are stupid. They are the kinds of people who have most likely never given a dime to charity. News Flash...Pitt and Jolie don't need any press about themselves, if anything, I imagine they would welcome less, like every time they try to step out with their family and a camera gets shoved in their faces, being followed, etc. At least they are trying to do something to help others less fortunately. That's pretty nice, from where I come from.

    Thank you for commenting.
My point was not to tell them where to do "good deeds".
My point was to show folks that there are plenty of less fortunate folks here in the U.S. who could use some help.

As a working class citizen I can only share my opinions here and my opinion is that the good folks in the South eastern foot hills, the kids in Detroit who are losing their schools due to closure, the kids in Chicago being killed because of gang violence... It goes on and on...

Why can't someone in Hollywood take the time to say ENOUGH is ENOUGH!!! Lets do something to put the USA back on track.

We as a society tend to listen to the entertainers of the world more so than the politicians. Right???

Just look at the comments here.

People have said why don't they help those less fortunate on our own soil instead of going elswhere. Well maybe they hope that people here can help those on our soil. Not everyone has the $ to go and help in other countries. But neighbors can help those here at home, how often have you helped your neighbor while expecting nothing in return?

giving help WHEREVER it's needed is never a bad thing, but complaining that they didnt dole out the help where YOU thought they should...hmmm that's kind of tacky, isn't it?

Angelina and Brad are two people that are very special, they both have great hearst and souls, they mawy not be religious people who attend church every Sunday like so many other people that claim to be religious, but yet they don't care about others like these two do..they travel to remote areas outside of the glamour and lifestyle of hollywood, visiting people who really need encouragement and hope. Kudos for both Brad and Angelina, the Lord sees the good deeds the 2 of you make and remember is whats in the heart that matters and the 2 of you have a caring loving hearts....keep up the good work, what an example of using your celeberity status to good use...

One day visit will not solve the problem of refugees but it will bring awareness to the people reading the article that the problem still remains in Bosnia to this day. WHY those people have not been able to return to their hometowns and rebuild their lives is beyond any excuse. Darn politicians, darn Europe who allowed the attrocities happen in their backyard, while they wined and dined with the murderers.
