Actress June Havoc dead at 97

testing captions
testing captions

(CNN) - Actress June Havoc, whose career began on a vaudeville stage as Baby June 95 years ago, died Sunday at 97, according to her manager.

Havoc's adult career included success on Broadway, television and film, but she was often overshadowed by her sister, the stripper Gypsy Rose Lee.

The story of how her headstrong mother traveled the vaudeville circuit with her young daughters became the basis for the classic musical "Gypsy."

Havoc's last TV acting job was in 1990 on the soap opera "General Hospital."

Dorothy – why try and make this out of a racial conversation? It's about the life of an amazing actress. Keep your narrow minded views to yourself. Anyway you are wrong in your a**umption. It's the father who determines. Therefore he truly african american. Maybe you were a mistake. Rest in peace June. You've seen a lot of bad and good in this world. Hopefully you can sleep well knowing that you've been the best person that you can be.

She had one daughter who has passed. Her sister was Gypsy Rose Lee.

She was a dear woman and a fabulous actress. She will be missed.

Rest In Peace, Dear June Havoc...I hope "Mama" and "Gypsy" greeted you with much love. Thank you for the pleasure you brought so many people.<

Very nice sentiment, there, but I doubt if mama greeted her with much love., as she was the epitome of a stage "mother". Mama was NOT a nice lady, was rumored to have had a man killed, and was constantly begging and conniving ways to get money from Rose and June. After Mama Rose died the girls finally reconciled, able to relax and not have to be constantly wondering if their mother was going to try and con money out of them anymore.

June Havoc was a force of nature..I knew her briefly in 1970 -71 when she created and directed Repertory Theater New Orleans in an abandoned synagogue just off Lee Circle. The passion and drive with which she pulled this enormous building from slumber, renovated and breathed life into it and an acting company were awesome. All of us in that company adored Miss Havoc and felt privileged to benefit from her experience and the seasoned actors she brought in, including Jessica Walter and Julie Harris, among many others. For a recent Theatre Arts college graduate from MIssissippi, working with Julie Harris was beyond a dream come true and being part of a professional company, six hours a day making costumes and six hours a day acting, was heaven. Just ask my old friend and fellow company member Gerald McRaney. xox Peg

I saw June Havoc in "Annie" on Broadway on December 31, 1982... We had 3 seats, 2 in the third row, and one in the balcony, I got to meet her(June) and Allison Kirk (who played Annie that night) backstage after the performance... My brother, who was a year older than me, had been hit by a car and died just 2 months earlier in October, so this was a super special thing that my grandparents did for me. Afterwords, I remember the throngs of people waiting for the apple to drop in Times Square, and holding onto my grandmother's hand with a death grip, which was the only thing I could see and feel. I was terrified I would get separated and never see her or my family again.... and intoxicated with the sheer chaos and excitement of New Year's Eve party revelers who were blowing noisemakers in my face and drunkenly shouting, "Happy New Year!" We finally made it to the train to take back to East Rockaway... The train was oddly calm and quite a contrast to the stimulating atmosphere of a city night exited only moments ago... God Bless you June... May you rest in peace!
P.S. You played an unrivalled Miss Hannigan!

I can see why a lot of people would confuse June Havoc with June Haver. But why the fixation on who's married to Fred McMurray?

She was the talented daughter of Mama Rose and sister of Gypsy Lee. One of the most enduring Broadway musicals. That is a much bigger story than who was married to Fred McMurray.

I was fortunate enough to meet this great lady many years ago. I wish that her story would be told, because it has so much depth and breadth - humanitarian, actress, writer, director, friend to so many. I hate to see this generation pass on. Can any of us imagine what the marathon days were like? It was Gypsy's story that captured the media' s attention, but it was June who challenged the imagination and the odds. What a wonder.
