Did the 'Idol' Top 12 kill - or just kill it?

[cnn-large-image image= caption="testing captions" width=416 height=234]
This edition of "American Idol" is going to get real tired real fast if the season ends up being Crystal Bowersox ... and others.

Simon tried to stir it up by putting it out there that Crystal shouldn't get too comfortable as the front-runner, and I pray he's right. Please, please, please grow and get better, Top 12 (soon to be Top 11).

(Watch CNN's "American Idol" blogger Lisa Respers France and CNN Radio's Michelle Wright discuss who should be sent home: )

Who were you loving tonight and who are you checking for to get the boot on Wednesday night?

as I understand we are all given our right to comment on American Idol and any shows we watch, I was taken a back and really put off by these 2 women who "think" their opinions are on point. They need to get a grip on style and fashion. I sensed some envy in their remarks, they need to take a good hard look at themselves before being critics, CNN not good, find some better more believable critics/coffee clutchers...........

wtf – YES!! I fully support a site and you'd find plenty of additional supporters on the American Idol blog site. She is horrible – her comments are irrelevant – IF she's still married, her husband should be concerned about her hanging all over Simon every week – her feedback doesn't ever make sense – and for God's sake, last week when she started "crying" – that was a big joke! There were no tears – she just wanted to snuggle with Simon.

The show is becoming a turnoff since Kara is attaching herself to Simon. Why do they have to lean on each other all the time. Please make her switch seats with Ellen.

I am a big fan of AI and i just think this season is bad. I still watch every night, but i only have 2 favorites. Didi Benami and Andrew Garcia. I have loved them since their auditions.

Andrew Garcia- Im worried about him! i want him to stay in it so bad but i just dont think its gonna happen! I voted for him 4 times last night! I love his raspy voice and i have downloaded two of his songs including his "straight up" performance and his "sunday morning" cover. i have them on a cd in my car so i jam out to him on my way to work! If your a fan of his you can download those songs in limewire!

Didi Benami- LOVE her! I recognized her when she did the "terrified" cover by kara dioguardi! Downloaded that too, its beautiful! Shes awesome! I REALLY hope people vote for her, she has probably the best voice from all of the contestants!

Cant stand the rest of them.. siobhan. weirdo.. crystal,.. come on, shes boring and do you guys really see her at the end of all of this on the stage with the confetti coming down and traveling and doing concerts in different countries and going to grammy award shows and everything? NO i definitley dont. she does not have "star" written on her face. none of them do really, except Didi! or Lee dewyse maybe..

    LOVE Crystal and Siobhan
    HATE Didi and Lacey
Paige and Katie are just boring

The only guy worth keeping is LEE
The others can be picked off in order of Tim,Aaron,Casey,Mike,Andrew

Thankfully i record the show on DVR so i can skip thru the worst singing and the stupid judges comments – SIMON is the only one worth listening to...

@mmhm...funny, i didn't see that many Africans try out but there sure were quite a few black Americans that tried out and sounded alright...Paige has a great voice but lacks the cofidence she needs to show the world she can sing...@showdogmom...hmmm, Crystal has alley cat morals??? what, did she do something to you??? Crystal has raw talent-she writes, sings, and plays instruments-she is a true what if she isn't happy go lucky she is her own person and doesn't have to "act" like some folks in America thinks she should. i'm liking...Crystal, Paige, Aaron, Lee and Casey.

I'm not getting the love for Paige. She is a terrible singer, plain and simple. All of her songs are badly out of tune. I know singers who can pick up a song for the first time and sing it flawlessly so her excuse of "I had laryngitis" might hold for a normal person, but it shouldn't hold for a real musician.

the problem w/ idol is . it's a popularity contest. on tv sobian's performance is great. but I would not buy her songs frm itunes. b/c it's just a bit annoying. i would buy records/songs of the girl with red hair and nice eyes. and the long hair blond with the bright voice. and even chrystal. b/c their voices are nice to listen to . but soft voices like theirs don't do well in live performances

Except for a couple of bright spots the performances were rather lackluster. Maybe the magic of AI is gone for me but instead of try to decide between who was the best of the best, I find myself trying to decide who was the least bad. Granted, there is alot of talent there and also alot of potential but they seem lost as to what to do next. I blame the judges for this as during the earlier judging they sent alot of mixed messages with their criticisms and suggestions. i just hope Mick Jagger wasn't watching last night!

Not a fan of Stones night on AI...most performances were lame. Crystal is awesome, though last night wasn't her best. She doesn't have a personality problem...she may very well have a self esteem problem, her health issues can be very serious, and she apparently grew up "on the wrong side of the tracks." She has most likely experienced more of the dark side of life than most of us. She's like the girl singing for money on the corner making it big and I'm rooting for her!

Crystal is too good for Idol. She's great, why does she need to smile more or take advice from the judges? There is nothing they can tell that will make her a better musician. I'm glad she's on the show however because I get to see her every week.

I love Siobhan. There is no one like her. Her performances stay with me for days.

It was the show's biggest mistake to send Lilly, Alex and Toddrick home, just like Kris Allen didn't deserve to win. I think this year is going to be just another disappointment. I have stopped watching the show after trying to vote for the good singers and then watching them going home (Lilly and Alex). I would like to know one thing, Why is Tim Urban still on the show? Has anyone noticed that Ryan has gone nose-to-nose with Simon several times, this season? Now THAT I find more interesting than the singers, this season. Good on Ryan – he's got more stones than Simon lately!

slay (formal or literary), murder, slaughter, execute, destroy, exterminate, eradicate, put down, put to sleep, assassinate, massacre, dispatch, bump off (slang)

this is not necessarily what the idol contestants did last night, but more what idol is doing to itself with all these changes, and they've obviously lowered the standards for contestants.

ALL OF THEM NEED TO GO HOME! This show is a joke! They completely bastardized the Stones music! Some classics you don't touch, and the Stones music is that! I can't wait for this piece of crap show to just go away! The only great talents that came out of that show were Jennifer Hudson (who was lucky NOT to win), Chris Daughtry (ditto) & Fantasia (who has not been promoted enough – her "Color Purple" stint on Broadway was AMAZING!). A pack of hyenas & tasmanian devils sound much better than this lot! Oh, I am sure Keith Richards is having a field day – he would say the same thing! Seacrest – come out of the closet & GET OUT! Note to producers: PLEASE let this be the final season for this one-step up from karaoke crap!

for me, I really like lee....I wasn't sure at first, but he actually has a really good voice. I wish he would smile....he's got that cute sideways smirk and if he would wake up and realize, DUDE! You're singing and being seen by millions of people and you're actually good, I think he would do better. I love the rapsy tone he has and he's not bad to look at. I also like Casey. He's good and I think he would sound good on the radio. I think Lacy would be good doing a voice for an animated Disney movie....just her tone. None of the others really stand out for me though.

As for Crystal...yeah she's talented, but she has got to lose the attitude. I haven't decided if she just comes across that way and isn't acting that way intentionally, but whatever it is she needs to adjust it. She reminds me of Melissa Ethridge. But she seems so ungrateful. I don't think she needs to act bubbly if she's not, but at least show a little bit of a humble side. If she made it big, I would be more inclined to roll my eyes at her cd then buy it. If you can't show that you're thankful for the gift you have and the opportunities that come along with it, stop wasting my time...

I am more bored with the boring judges than with the talentless contestants. Wish Paul was back; she added emotion, beauty, talent, and compassion. All the judges are too technical in their opinions.
Don't think Ellen or Kara add much to the show and Simon's opinions are sorta meaningless; he's lost his edge. Kara, don't pull a Paula with Simon; it looks fake. Not everybody loves the Rolling Stones; pick artists that contestants can actually relate to and sing!

Crystal Bowersox is talent. She reminds me of a cross between Nora Jones and Janis Joplin. Anyone who's actually been a musician should instantly recognize someone who has "it", she does and her potential career is exciting. I've watched every season of AI and never once thought I would buy any of the contestants CD, but I can't wait until AI is over so Crystal can record and I can get HER music, which I know will be amazing.
This shouldn't be a popularity contest or a beauty contest. It's so annoying when people analyze whether or not someone smiles or not, who cares? All that matters is what they sound like behind the mic. That's all that will matter once the show ends too.

This is the "Weakest" Idol show that I have every watched. I don't know if it's song choices, the judges, or what! They really need to go back to the random Judge comments. Crystal has a lot of raw talent. She will go far I am sure of that. But one thing she needs to do and that is smile, cause when she smiles she lights up the whole stage and everything around her. If she will do that she will walk away with it all.
Shiboan(sp) she is really good, but young and inexperienced, she will go far as well in the music world.
Big Mike, my hat goes off to you, for being such a tender and compassionate man, as well as a very good singer.
Lacey you are cute as a button, and you can sing. I love your style. The judges are right, you need to loosen up and just have fun. Everything does not have to be so perfect.
Lee he is really good, has to overcome the nerves.
Dee Dee I love her voice also, she has a very unusual sound, very good.

Oh, and I'm really sick of Crystal not caring whether she's here or not. Like she said in the beginning of the show "I was always against American Idol, but I'm doing whatever I can to support my son." She's only on here to try to win and not to be famous...but to have money for her child that she shouldn't have had in the first place if she didn't have the money for him. Her and Mike are so cocky and I would love nothing more than to see America shut them up by at least putting them in the bottom three.

Last night reminded me of the year they did Gloria Estefan night. The only good performance that night was...Gloria's. I think the Stones are just not material for Idol. I think Siobhan and Aaron, interestingly, did a great job.

I for one do not get big Mike...I do not like him at all and am tired of his smugness. I also do not like Lacey – she is too much about "her performance and how she moves and looks" and not enough about how the fans enjoy her. I think that's what SImon means when he says that contestants have "indulgent" performances.

As to who should go home this week, I agree it should be...KARA. I am sooooooooooooo over her...Her comments ARE indulgent. I miss Paula – she indeed was the heart of the show, and I think her being gone is why Idol is not connecting with many of us this year. I am a 50 year-old woman who has watched the show every year, but I am annoyed by her. I do think Ellen's been a great addition, and last night, it was her turn to shine. I listen only to Ellen's and Simon's comments now – the other two just need to learn new words...

In the end though, this is my prediction for the top three: Siobhan, Casey, and Aaron. Casey is a front man if i ever saw one...I want to see him do Bon Jovi, Van Halen, or stuff like that. He's WOW America even more. I am tired of people putting him down for his looks...People – he IS mesmerizing and that is part of the formula for success today!.

I think it really funny the way this season of American Idol has been going. This is by far the worst season ever. The show producers should of change the age limit for contestants to be on the show. Think of all the talent by older contestants that has been left off the show. The only contestant this year that is really going to stay in the back of everybody minds is General Larry Platt when he sang the hit song "Pants On The Ground". The General couldn't move on to the next round in the show because of his age but he will be remember for years to come. Nobody is going to remember anything else from this season. Sort of sad, the direction that American Idol has gone.

This has to be the worst year for AI. Ellen is a train wreck. She speaks in fragments, and does not have an original thought. That's why they have a fixed order this year for the judges to speak. They don't want her having to go first, this way she can copy what Randy is saying.

This was the most milk toast version of Stone's songs I've ever seen. They killed the energy and vibe that the band is known for. The Idol season thus far has been a boring disappointment.

Since the judges have a say in the voting anyway, I say put Crystal in the bottom 3 one week. I bet that will wake her up and get her to stop thinking she has this locked. Because she really doesn't.

The problem with Crystal is that she's quite predictable. Same style week after week. Not that she doesn't sing well. She does. At least Siobhan mixes it up. Yeah, maybe that one last note had a little harshness to it, but, look up the lyrics. It's a gritty song. So is Gimme Shelter and while Andrew is an interesting, that version sucked. Iconic song, bad interpretation. Back to Crystal. I suspect she's the most talented but she does appear like this is an afterthought, as if she isn't concerned whether she's here next week or not. She needs some personality coaching. One thing for sure...the guys aren't in the same class as the girls this year. Also, for those of you who found thought Siobhan screeched...there once was a singer on this show who that was said of too...initials A.L. As I recall, he ended up doing okay. 🙂 At least she's putting in the effort.

Can they send Kaa home tonight??? She is unbearable.

Crystal doesn't have an attitude problem. She is just a straight shooter who didn't have anything handed to her and doesn't expect anything from anybody. She's cool.

Sioban is also very cool. It will be between those two but Casey James is there also.

Tonight one of these three are gone...Andrew, Didi or Tim. Probably Tim.

My guess is that the two last one to fight for the title of American Idol will be Crystal and Casey James. By far the two best, too bad Crystal looks so sad all the time, come on girl a big smile would help a bit. The remainder of the crew is boredom, boredom, boredom......Ellen is good but I miss Paula, there was always electricity in the air when she was sitting next to Simon. Simon you're a bit better this year, smile more, you just got engaged or was the ring too expensive for your pocketbook?........I keep watching.......

I think everyone has the wrong impresson of Crystal, I really think that she is not in good health conditions, that was very obvious last week before the eliminations. She has Type 1 Diabetes, that is very serious. Plus I don't think she smiles a lot because of her teeth. She sings with such ease. I also like Siobhan, but she is taking the high notes a little too far plus sometimes she sounds like she sings out her nose, on top of that she is a little strange, someone in the comments says that she has "personality", I hate to differ, she has everything but personality. My husband calls her a "Pot Head"! But I do like her.

Tim is absolutely atrocious, but unfortunately it seems the swooning little teeny boppers out there keep him in the running. Hopefully not much longer. His female counterpart is Katie. She's mediocre, but has a "radio voice" so that might save her. And what's with everyone pounding on Crystal's "attitude"? Katie has the smuggest little attitude out there! She's a brat and I can't wait to see her go. Paige is okay, but generic. Funny that Di Di wasn't mentioned in any of these comments. I think she's really good. She has a great voice, and a unique sound. Siobhan is awesome, but yeah, she needs to ditch the scream. I think the caterwalling is what ultimately did in Adam Lambert last season (oh yeah, and the fact that he's gay didn't help, in our still largely intolerant, homophobic country).
Casey could just sit there and smile, and I'd still vote for him. LOL, just kidding, I think that boy has talent to match his looks.

I'd like to see more of her own style/flair instead of the same ol' raspy voiced Etheridge. Lee is a fish out of water. Until he gets his legs under him, he won't shine. He needs a huge dose of confidence. I really thought the young guy did good too although I can't remember his name. Paige is not star quality – just a good church singer. She won't make it big. I'm still waiting for Andrew to break out. He's gone downhill every week but I look at his You Tube stuff and it's awesome.

That's what a performance is all about ... working the stage & singing at the same time! Too many of the performers just stood there – the judges wanted to see how they used the stage.

On a positive note, it appears several of the contestants are getting better. Siobhan Magnus was hands down the best (though the judges went a little overboard I think). She was the only one that I thought was really good. There were several more that were ok-good range. The first 5-6 were completely forgettable – after the show was over, I couldn't even remember what songs they sang. There is still any number of 4-7 of them that could go home and I wouldn't be surprised or care.

So far the season has been quite sleepy. There has been a few that have given me a glimmer of hope.

Aaron Kelly -I did like him last night, not a wow song but a good one, he has star written all over him, he needs to hang in a little bit more and I think he will be a front runner.
Andrew Garcia – Actually been disappointed he was one of my favorites in the beginning and he is fading into the background. If he can't pull it together soon he is done.
Casey James- Another alright not special performance another in danger.
Crystal Bowersox- Another outstanding performance, was it her best. No but doesn't matter she is safe..- I think she has a self esteme issue. I am sure Idol therapist are on it.
Didi Benami- Sleepy her days are numbered.
Lacey Brown- I like her. Something about her, I enjoy her tone. Hopefully she can hang on another week.
Katie Stevens- She is a cutie, with a big ole voice, Marketable her problem is connecting to the audience, if she can get the people excited to vote for her, she has a strong chance getting to the finals.
Lee Dewyze- Love, his tone but get confident or the show is going to eat him up. Hopefully he can stick around and hurry up and get that moment.
Michael Lynche- Big mike, well sadly I think he should of been the one last week to go home instead. He is just average to me.
Paige Miles- She has something special going too, She needs to connect more with the audience, with these contestant this year, I don't think she is shining through and sadly she won't get the votes.
Siobhan Magnus- I think she is one that is going to be like simon said some will love her some will hate her but she is relevant. She is an artist and deserves more time on the stage.
Tim Urban- was he great last night No, was he horrible No. I like his tone, needs some polishing up still but hopefully he can hang on for a few more weeks..
Over all did they do the Rolling stones proud.. Vote is in..NO...

It wasn't as horrible as I thought it would be. This show used to have really good singers on it, didn't it? Not ones that 'sound better tonight than they usually do.'

Crystal was great and to listen to the judges act so unimpressed with her is beyond me. The comment by the blogger comparing Siobhan's notes to that of a stepped on cat were spot-on. Plus, she's just weird. Sorry.

The boy-kid was pretty good. The girl-kid was o.k., too. I so like Andrew Garcia. I hope he finds something to do soon so people don't vote him off too quickly. Lacey smiling through Ruby Tuesday was odd, it's such a sad song, and then the swiftly "stillI'mgonnamissyou.." What? Hrm.
    I'm tired of Didi already.
Who did I miss? Paige. Yes, Paige. The token black girl. During the try-outs, of all the Africans belting their hearts out, they found one good black girl singer, and it was Paige? Seriously? Nice try at diversity white people.

Yeah, Crystal sings good but so does 10s of thousands of other people. To me she sounds good but sort of ordinary. Let me put it this way, if she came on the radio I definitely would not turn it up and say, "wow, who's that" ... nor would I every purchase her album or pay to see her in concert. Now if I were at some festival or such and I came upon her performing, I might stand and listen for a song or two before moving on.

Lee, is in the same catagory for me – sings good, but not very unique among recent and current artists.

I thought Alex has the raw goods (i.e. great and DISTINCTIVE voice) though he needs tons of coaching and experience to make it work.

Of who's left, I'm pulling for Siobhan – she's interesting at least – consistently the most imaginative and unpredictable – nice voice too – her voice isn't what I would call distinctive, but it is nice and her whole package is somewhat distinctive.

Crystal is by far the best. I picked her from day one, and I normally don't vote this early on, but I've been voting for Crystal. She is going to have an amazing singing career, and if she doesn't win AI, America is tone deaf.

As far as attitude...I see confidence. Also, don't forget she wasn't a fan of AI and isn't star struck like all the other contestants who grew up watching the show.

Besides Crystal, I'm fairly bored. This is the worst Top 12 AI has never produced. Siobhan is good, but relies too much on screaming her notes which, while extremely good, may get old.

Lee is good, but not that impressed with the rest. Tim is HORRIBLE and I can't believe they picked him as a replacement!

My favorites, by far, have to be Siobhan, Didi and Crystal. I've loved Didi from the beginning, she has the most clear voice...very smooth and has so much control over it. On the other hand, Siobhan is just so unique and I love her confidence, it doesn't come across as cocky in any way. Her singing is pretty good too, sometimes shes not in key but I think it's just the way she belts it out that it's thrown off. Was it not awesome tonight how she hit those very large, loud notes there at the end and then finished with a soft, smooth that's control. I would think that it would be hard not to be raspy after belting it out like she did. Crystal is just Crystal and I think that she definitely will get a record deal even if she's booted off tomorrow night. She must lose the guitar for some of these performances though, she has to show that it's not her crutch. Someone else already said it, it's getting old.
For the guys, I guess it's just me but I'm really not feeling this little Aaron guy that the judges are gushing about. Maybe it's because he's so young but I just don't think he's any good at all.
Does anyone know who to contact with an idea for the show? I'll just put it out there and see what happens. I think that once they get down to like the final 4 they should have a b-side night. Remember way back when we used to listen to 45's? They always had a b-side that was a song that maybe eventually became popular but at the time it was released it was over shadowed by the a-side song. Well, I think it would be really cool to give the contestants the challenge of taking a b-side song and making it their own. It wouldn't have to be an artist from the era of 45's....I mean all cds that are released now have songs that aren't played on the radio. When you think about it, everyone would be on an even keel and it would be up to them to try and recreate the song so that it could be a popular hit. I'd be curious to know if anyone else thinks this is a good idea and hey, if anyone from AI is reading this.....

The Rolling Stones are full of passion and raw emotion in their concerts. I was disappointed in ten out of the twelve Idol contestants. They don't "feel" the music they sing - which is what separates stars from dull performers. They also do not pick out great songs for their voices. They need to learn how to do that, otherwise what's the point?

@ ksoze – I agree with your two favorites. I wouldn't be surprised to see that end up being the final two, and if so, that'll be one heck of a contrast. I have no problem with Crystal playing the guitar when she sings but I'm actually starting to wonder if perhaps she'd do herself well to put it down for a week just to come out and show people a little different side of her – I doubt she needs the guitar as a security blanket or anything, I think she'd sing perfectly fine without it and I think it'd be the sort of change that might keep people from making comments like "she just phoned it in." Folks, it might look like she just phoned it in because she's so at ease up there, and after seeing several people who looked like deer in the headlights, she was just so at ease up there that she probably still comes across as entitled, arrogant, or just not caring. She's confident – and comfortable – onstage. But close your eyes and listen to her and tell me she's just phoning it in. No. That girl can SING. Siobhan has the theatrics and the originality that will keep her in this for a while, but Crystal is, IMHO, by far the most talented singer in the entire thing. And isn't this a singing contest??

Lacey I agree could go tomorrow, although I would say Andrew is in bigger trouble. Paige was...well, interesting. I wasn't blown away by her but I thought she did more than well enough to stick around. Put it this way – I think Paige is more safe than Katie, and I think Katie will be fine (she may have been my biggest shocker although Simon and someone else here both mentioned Susan Boyle as having sang that song and that's not even a fair comparison...but I made the same one and no, they're not even close).

And @ Diane...I believe only one goes home each week from now on, right?

Siobhan is emerging as the dark horse with a great, unique voice and style, and more importantly, A PERSONALITY! As great as Crystal is, I expect to see her go the way of other prior strong frontrunners and end up in 3rd place. The boys should just go home now.

CRYSTAL is still the one to beat. She is awesome and NOT full of herself. She comes across as very down to earth and tells it like it is. I also like Casey James, not only does he have looks, he can sing and plays a mean guitar. Siobhan, Mike, Lee and Aaron are also good.

Glad to see Ellen doing what she does best, adding some humor, i.e., copying hairstyle, little joke about her sexuality instead followed up with being blonde.........She's getting better and tonight I thought Mike did good and Honky Tonk Woman was a good version too!

crystal, you can sing girl, but i cant get past your attitude!!!! you appear to me to be the most ungrateful contestant ever on american idol. i cant seem to get past the sourpuss to want to vote for you. and lee, just get some happy feet dude!! once you do, the game will be on!!

I think Tim and Lacey will go home tomorrow night.
    Aaron sounded great.
Thank goodness Andrew put the guitar down and let us hear something a little different.
Lee always sounds good but seemed scared. No need, Lee.
    Paige sounded better than usual.
    Casey is getting boring.
Katie sang "Wild Horses" okay, but I found myself compaing it to the Susan Boyle rendition, and Katie came up short.
Siobhan is so weird that I can't remember how she sounded.
Michael always sounds the same to me.
Crystal could have just phoned it in.

Crystal Bowersox is in another league compared to the competition. She is a gifted singer and, regardless of whether or not she wins American Idol, she is going to be a huge recording artist/star. Absolutely star power. She reminds me of Jewel when she was first discovered in Alaska. Does anyone besides me remember how Jewel looked and sounded when she was first discovered? The similarities are actually startling!

I love Crystal and I never watch the show – she has real talent and doesn't look like every "Carrie Underwood" the show tends to favor. I've never voted but I might this time around – I value talent and she's got it.

Yeah I think they killed it...they killed it, slaughtered, butchered,

I don't know I was bored the whole time that's for sure...

Darn...I'm a big rollingstones fan and I'm kind of disappointed...

Tim is the only one who stands out as utterly horrible, to me. But Tim is on VFTW, so I guess the hope of him finally leaving is probably dashed.
It's tough to pick a close second, but I would say Katie is probably the next closest to the bottom as I listen to the play back.
Thanks again for a wonderful blog night of chatting Lisa.
