'Precious' producer speaks on six nominations
"Precious" has been unstoppable, taking the wave of critical acclaim that began on the film festival circuit and riding it straight into awards season. The movie, based on the novel "Push" by Sapphire, got six Oscar nominations this morning. Mo'Nique is up for best supporting actress; Gabourey Sidibe is nominated for best actress in a lead role; Lee Daniels has been given the nod for best director; Geoffrey Fletcher is nominated in the best adapted screenplay category; Joe Klotz gets the nod for film editing, and, last but not least, the movie is also up for best picture. The initial reaction to the news? "There's a lot of screaming in my household today," producer Sara Siegel-Magness said.
"It's been quite the journey," she went on. "The moment we won Sundance, we had the feeling there might be something special." Having Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry sign on as executive producers only helped to boost "Precious's" profile. "I believe it brought validity to 'Precious's' story as a universal story," Siegal-Magness said, "because Oprah and Tyler speak to the masses. When they speak, people listen." |

Here's to you Monique! My money is on your for Best Supporting Actress!
I am so proud of this movie because it is real and it happens everyday and we love to stick our heads in the sand and pretend that life is a bed of roses and that is what this movie doesn;t do.
I am proud of Monique as she is a true talent with a gift for bringing on the pain and showing us true acting chops. Congrats to everyone involved in this project. GO WIN SOME OSCARS!!!
I would love to see this take all 6 Oscars! This is a great story, right down to the movie being made & the actors cast. Congrats to all involved – and congrats to Saphire for writing such an important story!
Mo'Nique is such a great talent. I would love to see her and Gabourey Sidibe win!
Saw the movie during Thanksgiving weekend and it was a "trip." I couldn't imagine a person having to go through what "Precious" went through, and , yet, I hear every day about the horrors people are facing. I used to honestly believe that "Black" people didn't have to endure the ugliness of incest and sexual abuse cause I actually believed that we , as a people, didn't do "those types of things." What fairytale land was I in, the things that happened in that movie are real, still happening daily and I can only stop to thank God that I was blessed to be in a family that escaped that "ugly." You never know, you just never know!
This was a good movie. I'm sure it will win Monique her first oscar. I'm hoping Gaby to take it, but it looks like Sandra Bullock may win..Other than that, it was nice to be nominated.
I haven't seen the movie but I read the book recently. It was a 140-page emotional roller coaster! However, I had to "detox" after reading it though because of the details of Precious' abuse at the hands of her parents. I am still glad I read the book because it makes me appreciate my parents, and appreciate other people because you never know what they are going through. My child is in high school and we talked about how there are some kids going through unimaginable things at home right now. You should never treat people bad because you just don't know. Precious story is heart breaking, yet heart warming, encouraging and inspiring.
