Oscar nominations: tell us what you think!

The Oscar nominations were announced this morning with "The Hurt Locker," "Avatar" and "Up in the Air" among the big leaders.

James Cameron's "Avatar" comes out on top with nine nominations, including nods for best director and best film. If this goes the way of the Globes, it'll be all about Pandora come March 7.

Joining Mr. Cameron in the best picture category were nine - yes, nine - other films, including last summer's sci-fi hit, "District 9," as well as Sandra Bullock's "The Blind Side."

For those of you who weren't tuned in to the live feed, there were very audible shouts of joy (and a few gasps) when Anne Hathaway announced Bullock's feel-good film is up for not one, but two Oscars.

Seriously, back in November, who would've thunk?

Mo'Nique, of course, is two for two with both a SAG award and a Golden Globe for her supporting role in "Precious," and she's now up for the Oscar as well. Do you think she'll clinch it and have an awards show sweep?

Did any of the nominations surprise you? Do you think the Academy forgot a nom or two? Let us know! And get those Oscar pools ready - we'll see you March 7.

District 9 deserves the Oscar, far way better than Avatar.
District 9's story, originality and the film itself -the best of this year!

avatar was a really really good movie
but the story is recycled and just polished and all that
district 9 should win because it was more original and it had a great ending.
id love to see either of these win
but id think district 9 deserves it a little more
avatar already grossed more than anymovie in the world right? so why do they deserve every single award?

So SICK of the Sandra Bullock train.... an OSCAR for that performance ?? Not a far stretch for her... I want to see someone win for ACTING ... Everyone is being duped into this because of the " feel good " theme to the movie... Monique .. now THAT is acting...

Was thrilled for Sandra Bullock. Long overdue for this lady. I loved
Avatar (saw it twice in 3-D) but not the Picture of the Year. Jeff Bridges was long overdue for an Oscar and should win this year. George Clooney was ok in Up In the Air, but not his best performance . Crazy Heart definitely deserved an Oscar for Best Picture. Robert Downey being overlooked for Best Actor? Shame on the Academy!!! Glad to see Penelope Cruz get a nod for "Nine" . For those who saw this movie know why she got it? The song she sang!! Really risque. Oh well, that's Oscar for you!!! But 10 films for Best Picture and one of them is District 9? But at least "Up" got in there...cute film. Way to go Pixar!!!

Wow well it has happened, society has been conquered by the sugary sweetness of the spectacle. These nominations are about shock and awe, and no longer about the beauty of such a human craft. Young Victoria and Bright Star were two gorgeous films founded upon true acting and sweeping cinematography, but alas I guess CGI shall win the day. Call me old fashion, but it is the human element of art that truly keeps it great, not the scope of a virtual world....please Oscar critics read Farenheit 451 once more...

It upsets me that Nine didn't even get nominated for best actor, director and picture. It truly was the best film of 2009. I think it was overlooked by the Academy because it didn't make as much as it should have done. That's complete BS. Half of the movies on the best picture shouldn't even be up there same goes for actor and actress, director to.

I think Mo'Nique should win the oscar for Precious. That role was meant for her and she did it well. She made the movie come alive and really put the truth in people's faces. If she doesnt win, i'll be hurt and very dissapointed.

Am I the only person upset with 10 movies nominated for best picture? Half the movies DEFINITELY DO NOT belong in this category. It just ruins the perspective of being nominated. I mean come on seriously, UP is in this category. Only second animated movie for this award ever, and lets say this, it is no where near Beauty and the Beast (the first nominated). I think best picture should be Up in the Air. great acting and great original screenplay. Avatar is a technological wonder but I agree it is a recycled story and one everyone knew the ending too about 30 mins into the movie. I think the honor of being nominated for best picture is no longer there. Go back to 5 nominations!

Overall, this is one of the best nominations list this decade. The best picture nominees list is like a microcosm of the film industry today with semi-indie dramas (Up In The Air), sleeper hits (both sci-fi, District 9, and feel-good drama, The Blind Side), seasonal tentpoles (Avatar and Inglourious Basterds), obscure indies (An Education, A Serious Man), dark dramas (Precious), and the long awaited nod to Pixar (Up).

I'm really happy to see love for District 9; it's the most original sci-fi film in a very long time and it's good to see it stand shoulder to shoulder with the favored winner and very un-original (just the story people, the technical achievements were amazing) Avatar. Just don't expect it to win anything except Best Screenplay, and it is still a dark horse in that catagory too.

Last year, Pixar got robbed when WALL-E was left out of the best picture race and it's great to see the new 10 nominees rule giving some long overdue respect to the most loved animation house in the world.

I will say this, if Precious, A Serious Man, An Education, or The Blind Side win best picture over the probably favorite Avatar, it'll be the death nail in the Academy's coffin. They've been out of touch with the general audience for so long (look at last year's best picture snubs for WALL-E and The Dark Knight for evidence) that if they think just giving nominations to popular movies is enough, then they are taking a swan dive toward irrelevance for anyone outside of the movie industry. The Academy can mitigate that somewhat if they give the award to Inglourious Basterds or Up In The Air. I'd personally enjoy if District 9 won, which is unlikely, but it wouldn't hurt the Academy. The odds on critical favorite, and should be winner, The Hurt Locker, could create mixed reactions. The film wasn't widely seen, and hasn't sold extremely well on DVD and Blu-Ray, but it's been in neary every top ten list for 2009 and is considered, so far anyway, one of the best war films ever made. I'd be hard to predict pop culture's and the general audience's reaction to such an intense indie film.

I was disappointed that 'Invictus' did not get a best picture or directorial nod. This Clint Eastwood film was quite moving and very well made. Glad to see that Freeman and Damon were nominated for their performances in it.

They completely forgot about the mjovie that was by far the single most entertaining movie all year in which IMO was what was beyond any shadow of any doubt the best perfromance by an actor next to that of Waltz in basterds.

Gerard Butlers perfromance and the film "LAW ABIDING CITIZEN"
    were both mezmerizing!

Out of the ten nominated films, it was beyond any shadow of any doubt infintely more entertaining to watch than any of them!

It was not perfect, but it was more fun to watch than AVATAR and BASTERDS and everything else that came out this year.

I use to enjoy watching the Academy Awards but they are causing the show to become longer and longer. Now that they have added 10 films rather than leaving it at 5, its going to be worse!

I'm sure Avatar will take home the most awards...it was a great movie but they need to leave out some of the categories or give them their awards prior to the show starting. They did that for the Grammys.

Although I love Meryl Streep, Sandra Bullock deserves to win.

At least 'Watchmen' didn't get any noms. That movie was pure garbage. Avatar doesn't deserve anything either. Unfortunately, It'll probably get best picture. Sigh...

'The Hurt Locker' wasn't great, but it was probably the best this year. 2009 was a crappy year for movies.

Movie opinions are totally subjective and there weren't too many surprises here but I think adding 10 films for Best Picture is a bad move. I didn't think this year's pictures were as good as last year. I was personally impressed with "Crazy Heart" and am glad that Jeff Bridges has already won other awards. Long overdue.

"The White Ribbon" deserves to be nominated for Best Picture and Best Director. Lars von Trier's "Antichrist" and the film's performers are also worthy of nominations.

I am entirely in agreement with you "house". This is was a steep decline from last year when films like Slumdog Millionaire, The Reader and Milk were nominated for best picture. I do think the Avatar and Blind Side noms will help ratings. Perhaps that offers some explanation.

Disgusted that avatar got any nods outside of special effects. Its a recycled story, with really pretty special effects, give oscars to real people in real pictures, not just some digital 3D animation crap

Was kind of hoping that Sam Rockwell for Moon would have snuck in but it was a long shot. Glad to see Christoph Walz in there. Looks like with the expansion of the Best Picture category we got Up, District 9, Blind Side as a few that probably wouldn't have gotten in otherwise. I'm rooting for Inglourious Basterds, but odds are Avatar will clean house. Also Up In the Air is awesome, hoping Clooney wins that one but looks like Bridges will get it. Penelope for the win!
