Meryl Streep sets record with 16th Oscar nomination

Meryl Streep has set a new record with her 16th Oscar nomination for best actress in “Julie and Julia,” easily topping the standard set by Jack Nicholson and Katherine Hepburn, who both have been nominated 12 times.

But, out of the 16, the 60-year-old actress has taken home only two. One for best actress for 1982’s “Sophie’s Choice,” and another 30 years ago for best supporting actress in 1979's “Kramer vs. Kramer.” Hepburn, on the other hand, won four lead actress Oscars in her career.

If Streep wins best actress on March 7, it will end a 27-year streak of always being the nominee, never the winner.

Meryl deserves it hands down. It is sad that people thought Sandra was better, looking at her box office performance and not at the real talent. Sure she was good, and i am happy for her nomination, but her performance is probably the weakest among the lot. From a critical perspective, she just didn't have the best conviction in comparison with Meryl's work. Meryl was spot on in each and every scene. Plus, if you also add the way overdue factor, her 'Doubt' factor of last year, and others, she will win this one for no doubt.

Sandra wins for me. She is a phenomenal actress and that really came through in Blindside. She was Fabulous! I hope she wins.

Meryl, you go get 'em. Sandra, on the other hand, is a bit too paste board of an actor. She can get all the face work she wants, it still doesn't make her any better actor. Miley Cyrus does a better job than Sandra Bullock. And, that's not too far out of the community theater circuit! But, then again, the Oscars have in recent years only made awards based on a perception of who deserves it instead of who earns it.

Lawd..I'm still convinced that Meryl has had better roles than this one...sure she's portraying a real character, but she was fantastic in "Doubt" and "The Devil Wears Prada"..which I think are meatier roles. I don't want Sandra to win either because she got mixed reviews for her performance. The true winner would be Gaby for her role in Precious. I'm sure Meryl has enough talent to muster another nomination just because she's that good. But this one should go to Gaby.

Hello: I vote for Meryl Streep. She's the BEST . Sandra is ok, and Penelope Cruz also. It will be ok if one of them win.

    Thanks,

Meryl deserves to win. It is shameful that she hasn't won in 27 years. I'm afraid Sandra Bullock will win and although I like her, her performance doesn't come close to Meryl's.

What a shame that this talent only has 2 Oscars...one for Supporting Actress and the other for Best Actress.

Her performance for Julie & Julia was far superior to that of Sandra Bullock's in The Blind Side.

If she loses agin this year, chalk it up to others who can't stand the fact that is is the gold standard for both actors and actresses.

Yes, Merly Streep is a good actress. Her 16 nominations consist in two categories Lead (13) and Supporting (3) as of this morning. Her two wins are for Lead for Sophie's Choice and Supporting for Kramer v. Kramer.

Her nominations for Julie and Julia and Devil Wears Prada should have been a supporting nominations not Lead Actress nominations. For me 47 minutes of film time does not make a Lead Actress in a 2-3 hour movie.

Also, Meryl's Lead Actress nominations for One True Thing and Music of the Heart came due to a slow year for Lead Actresses in 1998 and 1999....they were not her best work.

Meryl's spot this year should have gone to Emily Blout in Young Victoria.

For me there is only one all time great actress....Katharine Hepburn who had 12 Lead Actress nominations over 6 decades of films with a total of four wins. The first in 1933. Two wins which came back-to-back in 1967 and 1968 and her last Oscar for Golden Pond in 1981.

Katharine Hepburn is the only actress to win back to back Oscars.

Here are my picks of who should win an Oscar for this year.

Picture – The Hurt Locker or Precious

Director – Kathryn Bigelow – The Hurt Locker or Lee Daniels for Precious

Lead Actor – Colin Firth in A Single Man (Just Beautiful!!!)

Lead Actress – Gabourey Sidibe in Precious (Wow!!!!!)

Supporting Actor – Stanley Tucci – The Lovely Bones...a kick acc performance!!

Supporting Actress – Maggie Gyllenhaal – Crazy Heart......simple and beautiful

      Linda,

The first woman to win back to back Oscars was not Katharine Hepburn, but Luise Rainer, in 1936 and 1937 for the films "The Great Ziegfeld" and "The Good Earth." Katharine Hepburn was the second actress to win back to back.

Meryl should win. What other actress could have played Julia Child so convincingly? I can't think of one. I like Sandra Bullock and thoroughly enjoyed Blindside...but many actresses could have played that part and been that person and done JUST as good a job. I don't see her acting as anything extraordinary in that film.

I also feel Meryl has been slighted, and can point to at least 4 other nods she should have won for. Unfortunately, it has never been about quality, just popularity, as so much of life is. To think Bette Davis only has two Oscars, Cary Grant and Garbo (among others) have none, and any number of people who have one, or more, and shouldnt have gotten any closer to the ceremony than a valet parking attendant or seat-filler is a tragedy. Bogie said it best when he declared that the nominees should all be required to play the same part, then judge them on that basis. Works for me!!

I thought Meryl Streep was so convincing it was like watching Julia Childs. Everything she does is brilliant including playing the editor of Vogue. I would love her to win, but I think Sandra Bullock will get her first Oscar. Meryl Streep should have at least 10 of the statues. Best actor bar none of my generation.

I think she is so good, so often and so often nominated it feels like she has won more than she has and that probably affects the voting. People probably feel like they need to vote for the actress is having her "one" shot at the prize and they know Meryl will be back again....

The Oscar should go to Meryl this year. Her performance was spot on, endearing and made what could have been a simple story into a great film. For me, her Sophie's Choice has not been matched by an actress since 1982 (though Sharron Stone in Casino is a close second).

Meryl Streep has proved herself to be the most versatile actress with incredible talent. She has deserved to win far more times than she has which only goes to prove that "politics" is the Oscar's guiding light when it comes to who wins. If they pass her over again, then shame on them. I've seen all the nominated films and she deserves to win!

Meryl is definitely overdue for her third Oscar. Her performance in Julie and Julia was absolutely amazing.

She's simply amazing. I will never forget her role in "Sophie's Choice". It still breaks my heart to think of it. Meryl Streep is the gold standard in my book of actresses.
