Ellen debuts on 'Idol' next week

testing captions
testing captions

It’s almost Ellen time.

Ellen DeGeneres takes her seat as the newest “American Idol” judge on February 9.

The comic/talk show host will make her debut on the show during the Hollywood round where contestants will vie for a spot among the Top 24 semifinalists.

If past seasons are any indication, there’s sure to be plenty of drama, some tears and maybe even an argument or two as the group battles it out to make it one step closer to one of the coveted slots on the road to the final 12.

And there may be some battles at the judges’ table, too - since word is that the often cantankerous Simon Cowell and the happy-go-lucky DeGeneres may not be seeing eye to eye.

Are you excited to finally see Ellen take her place among the ‘Idol’ judges?

The only reason she is on this show is because she is gay.. this appeals to a different audience and attracts new viewers. She has no qualifications to be a musical judge.. I don't like this move at all...

It will not be the same – really wish Paula was back! Ellen gets too much exposure and I don't think she will have anything valuable to contribute since she is not involved with music industry in any way! She will shift the focus onto herself with her comments and jokes..

First, it might be nice to see someone who is NOT part of the music industry to take part in Americal Idol. Someone who can judge as an outsider looking in and simply make judgements on what they hear- which is what good music should be about.

Though I love Ellen and watch her quite often, I believe there will be absolutely NOTHING gained by adding her to the judge's panel. If this is what Idol is coming to, Simon Cowell was right to get out while Idol is at the top of the mountain before it descends faster than a winter olympics athlete on skis

I have my calendar marked! I can't wait to see this. Ellen is funny, real, has no shame (I mean that in a good way), and is talented. I think she will bring a lot to the table. Will be more like watching with a buddy then a drunk relative (aka. Paula).

Ellen replace Paula, as someone with Musical background Paula advice did not reflect that at all those past season. i could give better advice then her. So why bother replace her with someone with musical background....

Ellen is the only reason I would ever even consider watching this train wreck of a show! Hoping she'll bring her quick wit to the show and be "the people's voice"...don't think it's important at all that she doesn't come from a musical background, she loves and lives music and appreciates all genres. Just my opinion...

She's funny and will be funny on the show. She won't be great, but considering she's replacing Paula Abdul, she could sleep on the desk during the show and be more entertaining. As long as everyone remembers that the show is just "entertainment" then you won't be disappointed.

I can't believe you people who are criticizing Ellen being a judge. I am not in the music industry either, but I am a classically trained singer, I love all types of music, and have a good ear for pitch as well. I am no more qualified to be a judge than Ellen, but I feel that I have a lot in common with her. She loves all types of music and lives her life by music in a big way. She may not be in the industry, but she has the heart to get the job done. GO ELLEN! YOU WILL BE GREAT! WE LOVE YOU!

Love Ellen, but really, what type of musical background does she have that she should have a say on someone's future in the industry? Is she a music producer? At least Paula knew the music industry. I will miss her in a weird sort of way.

While I am not a big Ellen fan, her quick wit should bring something to the show.
People comment that she is not in the music industry therefore not qualified to be a judge.
Well neither are the fans who votes on the contestants.
I think that Ellen will be the peoples Judge, judging on what she hears as a listener.

Puala was awesome and will be missed but Ellen was absolutely the very best choice. You don't have to have a music background to know great music and good talent. How many of you sit there each week and think your the best judge of talent... Ellen will bring class, humor and a great perspective on who should advance each week and she will keep the other judges on their toes.

Whose to judge? I personally feel that some of today's music is in bad taste, some sounds awful, and I haven't figured out how some of the music got on the charts, therefore, I don't feel that Ellen needs a music background to be a judge; she probably has an ear for music. I think she would do a great job, or maybe a better job than prior judges.

I don't understand why people are so against Ellen joining the show. The whole show is based on text votes and popularity amongst the public. The judges simply state what they liked or didn't like about the performance and very rarely do they give actual tips to improve a performance. If you can do the same thing based on your votes/opinions, then Ellen can absolutely do it based on her opinions. She's just more entertaining than you. 🙂

The problem with American Idol is that there is WAY too much pomp and circumstance, WAY too many commercials (gotta luv greed), WAY too much filler, WAY too many sappy special interest stories and not enough CONTENT. Get rid of Ellen. I think she's funny and is a very entertaining talk show host but this isn't a good fit at all for her or the show. It could actually hurt the show. I would also boot Kara. Her overacting makes me hit the fast forward on the DVR every time. Actually every time she opens her mouth I hit the FF button. The best formula for the show would be to have Randy and Simon and a guest music industry person each week. Thats only 20 to 25 musicians, singers, or song writers a season. Mix it with some oldies that aren't doing much with a few seasoned vets that are still hot and then add some up and comers that have a hit or two. I can name two seasons worth right off the top of my head. That would add a bit of excitement each week and maybe even have then do a song and give advice to boot.

Everything has it's day and then it's gone. All artists, shows, trends and fads come and go. Idol is no different. Why expect it to last any longer than any show before it, or stay the same? Nothing stays the same, it all comes, grows, fades and goes, changing along the way. Stop expecting Idol to be any different. Enjoy it while it's here. Enjoy the parts you like, fast forward through the parts you don't. You can't please all the people all the time. One day Idol will be only on the reruns network, like Andy Griffith, Mr. Ed and The Gong Show. They were tops in their day, too. All things must pass...

What are they doing hiring "another" non singing VIP to be a judge on american idol. A comedian as a judge for someone trying to get a break in a singing career and one of the judges is a comedian...what are the producers thinking.. There are plenty of a pool of professional singers that could fill the position even some prior winners from American Idol..

Ellen may be funny but actually she's not someone I would want evaluating my singing ability , knowing that her resume is that of a joker not professional singer..her comments may as well
go down to toilet. she will probably allow all contestants go forward with that big old dumb grin she has.. Judge Judy would at least be honest and not blow smoke at someone with smiles and laughter..

This is a woman that was once a funny stand up comedian....only to completely sellout to Hollywood with her sitcom, coming out for attention and her unwatchable talk show. One of the absolutely most excruciating parts of watching TV is the off-chance that you will fiip on a channel and see her dancing.

ELLEN.....YOU CANNOT DANCE AND IT IS AWEFUL TO WATCH YOU!

The moment this talentless hack begins dancing.....watch the ratings drop, the votes reduce and the "hype" for AI dwindle. This is the beginning of the end for AI. She does not have a male fan in this world....females love her dancing but the truth is she has enought talent to last a.......lunchtime!!!

Ellen will give this show the spark it needed. Kara tries to be ghetto, Paula was either drunk all the time, or overly dramatic with her stupidity and lack of speaking abilities. Randy is a decent judge and Simon basically steals the show whether he is loved or hated. They need Ellen now for when Simon leaves for his own show next summer because once he is gone.. start saying your goodbyes to idol.

No one ever heard of her before Idol anyway and she's as interesting as a wet rag...and has just as much to offer. I say get Kara off the show and keep Randy, Ellen and Simon. I love Ellen, but not sure if she's a good fit for American Idol. Regarding Paula, I could never see why she was a judge, her music was awful. Her songs sound so nasally.

Big mistake. She doesn't have the skills to judge music talent other than her personal taste. The show is going down hill fast. Adding Diaguardi last year was a mistake and Paula's departure was the final nail. Bye bye American Idol

Seems to me that the argument you need to be in the "music industry" to be a constructive contribution to American Idol assumes a bit too much about the integrity and authenticity of the show. The judges are as much a part of the entertainment as the performers and Ellen, in my opinion, will be an entertaining addition. As it is, the audience ends up voting for the winner, and we have less experience in the music industry than Ellen does.

to answer the 'Why?" question. Ellen is on a popular tv program because gays and lesbians are treated like royalty in hollywood. They displace regular people and always want to be in the spotlight, while at the same time saying 'we're just normal people, we want to live a regular life like everyone else' Yeah right. A bad move for a bad excuse of a tv show

It's about time that Idol gave us a fan's voice among the judges. Someone who knows entertainment but doesn't necessarily have a musical background.

If nothing else, she will make the show more fun.

I love Ellen but I don't think she belongs on "Idol" for the obvious reasons many have already stated. Seems to just be ratings booster for Fox.

It's a shame for the contestants. I always felt that these kids were more fortunate than they realized, having access to industry pros and equipment, as well as the general exposure.

Judges add entertainment value ... but this, at least for me, is about watching the hopefuls who for some never dreamed they could have a career ... realize it's possible, grow and develop in a matter of weeks and shine in the end. You get to know them and the personality they show along with their talent is more important than the judges bantering ... although constructive criticism and appropriate praise is always welcomed. I think it's punishing the participants if you don't agree with the joices of judges made by the producers and that is not fair to them.

Aside from saying, "Dog this...Dog that, and that was pitchy dude", I don't really know what Randy brings to the judging panel despite his experience in the music industry.

I'm not the biggest Ellen fan but I agree that she will at least bring some freshness to the stale judging panel and lend the average joe perspective to the group and contestants. It's really too bad that she couldn't have judged the early rounds to see her reaction to the lunatic wannabes who show up in the regional auditions.

I just hope that the other judges respect her opinion and it doesn't become about Simon or Kara putting her down because she's not from the music biz!

Ellen will represent those of us who are the final arbiters. Those of us who listen to the radio, buy the CD's or download the MP3's are the ultimate authority.

You do not need to be a musician to have an ear for what will sell to the public. I hope that Ellen's sharp wit and ability to come back with zingers to anything Simon could throw at her will make for good entertainment. I for one am looking forward to the new season.

Ellen is funny. She is smart. Being in the entertainment business, she probably has heard enough wannabees to know if someone can sign or not. Paula was cute, but contributed little. Some of those guest judges were ridiculous, so Ellen will be a welcome change. Shania Twain and Neil Patrick Harris were the only 2 guest judges that had a clue. Ellen will be just fine. Besides, Simon will be gone next year. Then what?

I, for one, am thrilled Ellen will be a judge on idol. Ellen being a judge is the only reason I will be watching this lame show after the auditions! She may not have any music industry experience BUT she has tons of experience in making it in Hollywood. She did not get to where she is because she is someone's daughter. She had to fight her way there. She will be able to judge whether or not she thinks someone can make it in the industry. An industry which takes a strong person to survive. She will be a good judge of that aspect.

Oh and by the way...Ellen is funny!!!

Ellen is great.........but I do hope we will see her serious side. She knows these kids are looking for their path to stardom as she once did.
As for Simon I respect him for the most part. He does have an eye for talent (Carrie Underwood) but is human and doesn't always make the correct selection (or comments)......i. e.( Jennifer Hudson). He can get his point across without some of the rude comments he makes. He does not have to hurt someones feelings......but at the same time and in defence of him some who audtioned should realize they should never have even tried out. I would not be at all surprised if this was the final season for Idol......but I have to agree with Randy. This show is about those who are auditioning.....not the judges. I miss Paula. I think everyone misses Paula but I do not blame her one second for leaving.

I think it is time for someone on the Judge's panel to express the fan perspective. Doesn't need to be someone in the music business, but someone who understands the entertainment industry in general. And to be funny along with the constructive criticism we all wish we could give as fans.... Ellen is a perfect choice.
