Mariah Carey explains her speech
 testing captions Mariah Carey would like the world to know she was just having a little fun. Backstage Wednesday night at the People's Choice Awards, the singer addressed all the hoopla over her rambling acceptance speech at the Palm Springs International Film Festival Tuesday night. Carey said she and "Precious" director/producer Lee Daniels were enjoying the evening's festivities and all they had to offer. "The thing is me and Lee hadn't seen each other in a long time," she said. "We were really celebrating for the movie ... and there's so much exciting stuff going on with Precious. " "There's a time for celebration, and a time for not. It's kind of like a party atmosphere, but they trick you!" Carey continued, "If people don't understand me and they just think I'm this girl that stands by a microphone and sings Hero then they're definitely not gonna get me. But if people knew me they'd understand and have a sense of humor. And basically that's what gets me through life." So should we blame it on the alcohol? "We had splashes of Champagne, and I love Lee, but he's a bad influence," Carey said before she quoted a rap song by J-Kwon: "Everybody in the club getting tipsy!"

I like Mariah, but I don't think it does anyone any good to speak in rap and to butcher the English language. When in front of a mic, use English. What's wrong with looking and sounding smart and well-educated? The use of rap lyrics and ghetto slang just propagates that kind of communication in society. We need language, and language has rules . . .
I think that she is a fake bimbo who can't do anything other than memorize some words and sing them. I have never heard anything good come out of that mouth of hers except her music. Okay first I want to say I am a huge fan of MC's old music. I have her first CD. I listen and sing to it all the time.
Like many of you have said she is a performer, she is not meant to be a hero or a role model. If your kids are looking up to her then you should probably change the channel that they are watching.
Unfortunatly it is the way our country is. Few people look up to real heros anymore. Believe it or not our society makes what MC wears okay even at her age. Our society is always pushing the idea of flaunt it if you got it.
It is seriously sad that the human race is so judgemental of a star having a couple drinks and giving a loose, not so direct acceptance speech. It is sad that it causes this much uproar. I understand that it probably wasn't the best place to have a few drinks, but we have all been then. We have all had a slip in judgement and drank a little too much when we shouldn't have. It just so happens that the everyday Joe doesn't have the disadvantage of being in front of millions when they do so.

Bev, I am curious to know what kind of clothes late 30's early 40 year old women wear? Sackcloth, burlap, moomooh's? In case you haven't noticed, she works in Hollywood where image is everything. Is it shallow, vain, and laughable? Sure. Getting tipsy from champagne doesn't necessarily mean she should be running and throwing herself on the doorsteps of the Betty Ford Clinic.

If you or I were under the influence, someone would be arresting us. But for a celebrity, we are supposed to think they are being funny and just go along with it. Come on, could she not have waited another 30 minutes or so to get drunk? Sure she was having fun, but why didn't anyone stop her from getting so drunk until after she accepted her award? She was on national TV for God's sake. Why set yourself up to be embarrassed when thousands of people are watching? That's what the after parties are for. As for her husband, I think he is kinda cute and he must be a saint for putting up with some of the things she does and says. I really think the guy adores her.

"the drinking thing can happen to anyone". Mariah is a wonderful woman and she is HUMAN. Its the pressure that society puts on us that drives us CRAZY. When people can live their lives for themselves and enjoy it...that's a beautiful thing.

Carey is not a singer or a performer. She is an artist. Videos, lipsyncing, spot appearances, etc. No tours, no live performances. She is truely one of the most overrated acts ever. I think she is great, love her voice and so she was somewhat "tipsy" who the heck cares. Mike S – that talentless ho-bag as you call her obviously has some talent; she's able to get wallets and purses opened in stores, get butts in seats for sold out concerts, convince women to buy her perfumes, create a buzz wherever she goes, manage to look as beautiful or better than some 20 yr olds, and, get YOUR attention enough so that you'd take YOUR time to post a comment about her. I don't know, but I think that takes some talent. And, I'm glad she has no problem with saying she was getting a little buzzed on champagne. Come to think of it, it takes talent to admit that; although the tabloids and reporters hate it since there's no "punch" left in this story and they now have to find another "hot" target.
I could care less, everyone one knows that the entertainers are parting at the show behind stage and even have drinks in there seats as they watch the show. I had the pleasure of working with Mariah in the recording studio, and she was a true professional. She's sweet, and has a fantastic sense of humor! So I'm just saying...for what it's worth!

I have to say, I do not own or typically listen to Mariah's music. She certainly is a talented singer, however, and one of her Xmas songs I do like a lot. That aside, I do have a couple of thoughts. Firstly, okay, she was tipsy, no doubt. But far from falling down drunk. Give the girl a break. It was an awards show. Like many have said, she's a performer, not a public servant. She wasn't driving, flying a plane, or doing surgery on anyone. Doesn't qualify her to join AA. Secondly, she's a nice enough looking girl, but I agree with some of the others who think she dresses poorly. I've always thought that. Don't know if it's her stylist or just her own doing, but she constantly looks trashy. Can't figure out why. All that money and she just can't get it right with the wardrobe. Have your champage girl, just class up the clothes and you'll be fine.
Someone should have cast a net over that butterfly when she started to speak. Stick to singing Mariah. Don't blame others for your own actions. Be responsible not to get drunk before you're called on stage to accept an award.

Screaming does not equal singing. Screamin is all I hear when she comes on the radio. Not for me, but I respect the fact others may like her "music." What turns me off even more than the screaming, though, if flaunting her body around in clothes that do not fit. I do not want to see her chest – put them away.
The rule for artist during award season... If you are nominated, please have a little class and hold drinking to a minimum. There will be plenty of parties after the show. Her speech and others who have behaved this way in the past, only takes away from the serious work they are being recognized for.
What happened to personal responsibility for ones behavior? No one poured booze down her throat and she knew very well that she would possibly win the award and therefore need to give an acceptance speech.
There's nothing worse than dealing with someone who's intoxicated and it's really unbecoming of a celebrity like Ms. Carey who's clearly very talented. She has too much to lose and should look at what happened recently to Tiger Wood's. His reckless behavior has severely damaged his career.

This stunt is good for her. I have more respect for her than I did before and those who are uptight prudes probably don't buy her music anyway. When she said those that don't get her, she's probably just saying her fan's aren't going to be appalled just idiots.
Mariah is really full of herself. She is so plastic it makes Tupperware envious. Sure, she can sing, or used to sing, well. Although her voice has sounded hoarse and ofetn cracked, she still has that dogwhistle falsetto that is uniquely annoying. She sure dresses like the world has run out of fabric, too. My goodness, you could see the fat and flesh wanting to leap out of her dress. She has matured in a not so good way. She is stuck in her girlish state in a mentally retarded way. Listen to the way she responds to interviews and you can tell this girl has nothing but air in her brain. Not pretty at all, and really embarassing. She has gone from an amazing singer to simply a joke item in late night shows and YouTube!!!

For you people that think singers/actors/sports figures are supposed to be heroes to your children, get a grip – these are entertainers, they don't save lives, they don't lead nations, they don't write laws, they're entertainers, pure and simple. Re-direct your children to what's important in life; this is just about leisure activity.

Many of us have had a bit too much in times of great joy and in times of great sorrow. It is to Mariah's credit that during the incident, she acknowledged that yes "what you said" when someone yelled out that she was drunk. She didn't kill anyone, she didn't beat up anyone, she didn't rape anyone and she did abuse any dogs. She is an adult that was enjoying her moment and, yes, had a bit too much to drink. But she handled it with grace. Mariah is a goddess, though I wish she would sing more gospel.
I liked her much better when she was married to Motolla. Back then she was an artist. I couldnt stand her last 4 or 5 "metamorphasis" as she distanced herself from whites to try to earn street cred...and the "wiping the fog off the mirror" move is cheezy, please stop. Her marriage is a fake and she's empty. Mariah and Whitney should move to Vegas and do a 2 girl singing act for $45 a ticket.

I'm a big fan of her music, own several of her CDs, but It's hard to take a Woman seriously when EVERYTHING she wears in public makes your eyes focus lower than her face, if you know what I mean. How about you wear some nice sweaters and designer slacks every once in a while? And what's up with her husband? My wife is very attractive Asian lady who always asks me how she looks before we leave the house on social occasions. Learn a new expression: Age appropriate dress! Sadly she was drunk not TIPSY. I was embarrassed for her. Eminem called her an alcoholic. For the age she is there is this thing called socially drinking in MODERATION. She was not in that category.

There are so many better singers than Mariah, I have no idea where she gets her staying power. She's been at the top for so long she has no appreciation for how she got there. I was pretty taken back when I first saw her acceptance speech at PSIFF. At first I thought, "How dare she? She should be taking this very seriously. She is getting an award." But then you look and see the director standing right next to her having a good time too. He obviously wasn't bothered by her behavior, so why should the pubic be? Glad they had a good time. And she wasn't completely incoherent. She did complete a few sentences that showed she was truly appreciative. hahaha.

Where is her apology for insulting the girl who played Precious in the movie. Her performance in the movie was blah compared to the all the others. I love Mariah. God really gave me a huge present when I was able to met her in Rio last October (2009) for the Oi Fashion Rocks concert. She was the most lovely person on earth while talking to me, even though it was a little bit quickly. Words can not express how wonderful she is. Hope she can come back soon. Considering the "drinking thing", it can happen to anyone.
