Adult Swim: Lil Wayne not playing Jesus Christ

testing captions
testing captions

Contrary to reports that rapper Lil Wayne will be lending his voice to the son of God, a spokesperson for Adult Swim says that the rapper's character in a one-hour cartoon special with the working title “Return of Freaknik” is not Jesus Christ per se, but just a guy named Jesus.

The cartoon, which is being produced by fellow music maker T-Pain, is about a group of up-and-coming rappers who travel to Atlanta for a battle of the bands contest. (Freaknik was a 1990s gathering of students from historically black colleges, first in Atlanta, later in Florida.)

Lil Wayne, who is scheduled to be sentenced to prison in New York on February 9 as a result of gun charges, was brought into the Adult Swim mix by T-Pain, who has worked with Nick Weidenfeld, the head of program development for the network, in the past. (Adult Swim, like CNN, is part of Time Warner.)

A spokesperson for Adult Swim told CNN: “Lil Wayne’s character is still evolving. All we can say is that he is named Jesus and not Jesus Christ.”

I've never listened to Lil Wayne, but after reading all the Jesus comments, I might have to start. If it truly pisses off the fundies, how could I resist?

@whitie: you had me agreeing with your whole paragraph until the last question. With so much evidence of reason, why still cling to a god?

We're all atheists to most of the world's gods, anyway. Xtians just hang on to that one that is described in completely throughout the entire bible. And, I've read the bible, several times, and multiple translations, including in Hebrew. The bible is the reason I stopped believing in god.

Why shouldn't thugs, drug dealers, pimps, prostitutes, violence and ignorance be mainstream...and their traits be comparable to Jesus. Gosh how dare any one complain about "pimpin out Jesus"! We must all be politically correct!

I find this whole development rather amusing, and good on Lil Wayne for furthering his creative endeavors.

As for all the hellfire and damnation, shouldn't you good God fearing Christians, let God sort that out. You know being infinitely powerful, and all knowing if he really had a problem with it he could just go all Old Testament on Lil' Wayne am I right?

I thought organized religion was supposed to be all about the promotion and development of virtue, not fear and control. If God wanted robots that do only as commanded, and live only to his exact specifications I think he could have swung that.

Lil Wayne pretty much killed Hip hop with his new "style". He used to be a good rapper with the Hot Boys. Where did he go wrong? Oh yeah, I forgot. He doesn't have Gillie to write his lyrics no more. Anybody who is a fan of this clown doesn't know what real hip hop is. I'm sick of these bubblegum rappers killing hip hop!

I'm actually intrigued by the story potential. Knowing what was going on musically in the early 90's, a rap battle of the bands may be very interesting. Adult Swim did a good job with Boondocks, even if they didn't produce it, so it should be treated with just the right amount of respect and reality.

"Disgusting," I guess you better zip on down to the barrio and tell all those guys named Jesus to change their names for you. Lemme know how that works out, and let's ban names like "Christopher" and "Christine." Just to be safe let's ban Mary, Joe, and Mohammed as well. Can't be too careful? Of course you can!

Talk about a tempest in a teapot! People, before you get bent out of shape over the use of a religious figure, read the story. Lil' Wayne's character is named "Jesus". If it makes you feel better, read it "Hey Zeus".

  12. Great

    1. Jesus Christ is real.
    2. I have experienced Christ in my life and am fully persuaded.
    3. The difference between Christianity and other religions is that your heart is changed when you BELIEVE. You become a new person.
4.The ignorant are always the first to condemn something they know nothing about.
    5. Lastly... Whether you believe in Christ or not does not change the fact that He is the Son of God. However, wehether or not you believe in Christ changes your life after death forever.

WOW! @Tommy Hawk...Jesus was "white" b/c of OLD PICTURES. THERE WAS NO PHOTOGRAPHY WHEN JESUS WALKED THE EARTH!!!! What you are claiming are pictures are paintings/drawings of what people 100's of years after Jesus "think" he looked like. I am white and do not believe that Jesus is white..he would have to be the only caucasian in Israel if that's the case. I believe he was of brown skin/tan skin dark curly hair and brown eyes. "God" is not white, black, etc. You are not supposed to and can't put human characteristics on God...I believe that's in the "Bible" the good book that was written and re-written and re-interpreted and a lot of scriptures written aren't even in the bible. Trust your gut...trust your senses..that's what God gave them to us for. Don't believe everything you see or hear or read!!! I believe "whitie" said it best above!

The greatest gift we were given is choice. Make yours wisely. Jesus said "I am the way, nobody comes to the father but through me". But don't be fooled and judge people by what you hear through the media. The Bible says that the things of this world will pass away. Where will you be when this happens? And it will happen!

Tommy Hawk, and any others who think Jesus was white based on "really old pictures".....are you serious? How can people be so smart, yet ignore the most basic common sense thinking patterns. I hate to burst your bubble, but my guess, based on geography, (ever heard of the middle east, or Israel?) is that Jesus had more of an Osama Bin Laden look than the Brad Pitt version endorsed by the majority of christians...how ironic is it that a white male paints a picture of god, who just so happens to look like a white male. Other comments, such as the "how dare u use MY LORD"S NAME like that..." kind of stuff.... These arguments are for the small minded. Not every citizen is capable of thinking on their own, outside of the box, and making their own planned, personal decision about something. Some people need to be given a bone to just shut up, so the real dinner is not interrupted. Extremism while dangerous, is marginal, and you Bible thumpers who cannot fathom reality outside of ur bethlehem manger (another blindingly stupid assertion) fairytale will continue your reign of CNN new's article link commentary ethics. If I was a praying man, I would pray for you all, the innocent people who have no clue how f'ed up their reality really is. But Im not, and ur hopeless and marginal, so it would be a waste of time really, probably as much as this post, but a truely compassionate person can only take so much injustice before he/she speaks out. Jesus was closer to black than white, God is not a culture enforcer, he is not just in America. lol. My God loves everybody, no matter what they say. why is that so problematic?

PLUS, i'll bet my last cent you've all got at least one (or more) cackhead, drug/alcohol/woman abuser in your own family..

i cant stand lil wayne as an artist..but i respect him as a human being.. stop blaming him for being a product of the society he was raised in.. and take into consideration that the guy is still growing as a person..if he lives long enough he may potenitally have a positive impact on the world..

"For your information Jesus Christ was white! It can be easily seen in any old pictures of him".

So you came across an old Polaroid of him? If Jesus was from the "Holy Land" at that point in time, chances are he'd be dark or, GASP, black!

Stop reading from a dead book for a live God.

I don't see why all the so-called religious people on here are so angry about having their"lord and saviours" name used by or in the same sentence as these other people. Did your "lord" have nothing to do with the creation of these people? I don't get it. Did the "lord" create you and the devil created everyone else? it's messed up that you guys post all this hating but in the same sentence, have the audacity to preach about a god. Smarten up. If you want to spread the "good word", you need to stop damaging your own credibility by ranting about Christ returning to punish or whatever.... We don't buy it and when you get mad that we don't buy it, it just makes us wonder why you're mad about it....

To those of you who seem to relish the idea of the guilty being judged...have you actually read the Bible? Do you have any idea what Jesus was really about? Do you think he would be proud of how you seem to derive so much pleasure at the idea of other people going to hell? You seem to forget that people who disagree with you aren't the only ones who will be judged. What will Jesus see when he looks into your hearts?

    January 7, 2010 at 12:17 pm | Report abuse |

I can't wait until Jesus comes back to judge these buffoons!! For your information Jesus Christ was white! It can be easily seen in any old pictures of him. And on the day he returns, many of these people will be going to the darkside, which by the way is Hell, inside the center of the Earth below the ground. It's in the middle of the Earth, it's so hot down there you'll burn for ever n eternity

Who cares about any of this? The only reason I read it, was because they used Jesus and Lil Wayne's name in the same sentence. The project sounds like more ignorant garbage for our kids to see and I think that it is pitiful. These guys are modern day minstrels that make a lot of money acting like out of control drunken idiots that degrade women as well as themselves and dress like clowns. Our kids eat it up because someone made it the only thing for them to see as being glamorous! Lil Wayne should get to know Jesus in this next year and really come up with a plan on how to keep some of that money he is making and put it to good use. Right now, I don't think he has a clue!

This is a truly disgusting post. The fact that my Savior's name is being used in this manner is horrible. I work very hard teaching young people and men like Lil Wayne are a negative influence to say the least. He performed at a concert this week on a school night. Some of my students paid to see him, yet they had no idea what was on their test. I am glad I grew up in a time when we had positive entertainers, not people that were going to prison and singing about it. It is a sad day for our children. I pray for them every day.
