An open letter to Paula Abdul

Dear Paula,

First off, we're really sorry to see you leave "American Idol." Even though we don't quite understand why the reported $3 million you were making on the show wasn't enough, we respect your decision. And yes, we are looking forward to seeing you host the return of โ€œVH1 Divas" on Thursday night. Because we really do love you.

And it's because we love you that we feel it's time for some tough love and blunt advice: Fire your team. Whether it was your PR people, manager, agent, or gardener who advised you during your "American Idol" contract talks, someone clearly and repeatedly dropped the ball. And as your business-minded ex-colleague Simon Cowell would agree, somebody on Team Paula deserves to get sent packing. Need convincing? We count at least three colossal goofs that were made on your behalf in recent weeks:

1.) In July, presumably during the height of your salary talks with "American Idol," your manager told the Los Angeles Times that you might not return to the show. If that was a ploy to rally the American people into a "Save Paula" frenzy that would have folks jamming phone lines, taking to the streets and packing town hall meetings until "Idol's" producers showed you the money, then it backfired big time. Instead, that defiant public statement during what had been private salary talks probably made both sides dig in their heels. Your fate on "American Idol" likely was sealed right there and then. Strike One.

2.) To announce your departure from "American Idol," you opted not to work with your former employers to issue the standard "Paula-has-decided-to-pursue-other-opportunities" press release. No, that would have just let everyone save face - and left open the door for you to come back later. Instead, you blindsided your "Idol" colleagues (and closed, barricaded and nailed shut the door to your return) by announcing your "Idol" departure in a short Twitter post. Now, Paula, this one was mostly your bad. But it was your team's job to save you from yourself - even if it had meant hiding your BlackBerry. Strike Two.

3.) The day Ellen DeGeneres was announced as your replacement, "Showbiz Tonight" asked your publicists for a comment. Their response: "No statement from Paula. She has moved on." This was the most baffling mistake yet! A warm statement of congratulations and best wishes would have made you look classy and cost you nothing. Instead, you looked petty. Yes, your people eventually did release a more gracious statement. But a star of your caliber needs a team that gets it right the first time. Strike Three.

We know that you're an incredibly sweet person. So if you find it hard to summon the ruthlessness to fire your team and save your career, just re-read this letter. And then ask yourself one simple question: what would Simon do?

To paraphrase one of our favorite songs of yours: "We're Forever Your Fans."

$3 milion, $15 million. Do these people really deserve that kind of money for what they do? Let's see them get paid like the everyday person gets paid. Live on what we make. The more money celebrities make, the greedier and stingier they are.

That is a fabulous letter, but why even bother to inform her? She is a complete mess and has worked with every publicist, agent and manager in town and no one wants to subject themselves to the torture. She makes appointments and shows up hours , if not days late. She thinks her "D" list celebrity status gives her the power to everyone to waste everyone's time. At the end of the day, she had her moment. She needs to just step aside. Thankfully, she is just one or two disasters away from Gay Icon status..

Im not sure on how well Ellen is going to be on American Idol. I mean, i love her show, shes a great person but american idol??? they are totally crossing the line.
Paula was a good judge-not the best in my opinion, but im not sure about Ellen... I think they could have chosen another person that isnt so "funny" or whatever... if you know what i mean.

I can't believe anyone is actually saying they won't watch BECAUSE Ellen is on it now. That's so lame that anyone cares that much about who sits in that chair.

Also, Ellen didn't steal the role from Paula, so why the bad blood towards her (unless you are homophobes, which I do suspect...)?

Remember that this is ENTERTAIMENT, and she's an extremely talented ENTERTAINER. What makes her less-qualified than a briefly (yet moderately) successful, tone-deaf, marginally-talented dancer?????

Get with the program, Cowell had Abdul dumped. How could you not notice his scowls and other signs of disgust over Abdul constant blathering? He engineered the entire thing, from bringing in a fourth judge, to pushing Abdul's buttons to make her quit.

I loved Paula! She was crazy, funny & cute. There's still time for her to come back, and I think she probably will.

I love Ellen too, but she'll be a big distraction on the show. She's a comedian for goodness sakes! Between Ellen's comedy routine's and the other girl's long-winded comments, they'll have to lengthen the show just to see the competition.

    Bring Paula back!

its obvious to me that the letter writer knows nothing about paula or her situation. I do and have know her for over 20 yrs. I have one question – what team? paula makes all her own decisions and no one on her small team sticks around long enough to have a cohesive plan (why, not for me to say). she is responisble for every thing that happens, no one else. what you see is much different from what the reality is. paula sealed her fate long ago on the show and it was just a matter of time. everyone that knows the truth, understands this. she is one of the most talented, creative, people I have ever met and she is to be admired for many things, but behind the scenes is another story completely. the best paula now is in front of the camera, behind the camera will reveal itself in time – much like her show hey paula, but times 100. she is loved by so many and should be as she has much to give, unfortunately, as we all are, she is her own worst enemy. may she find happiness.

The smartest thing to do would have been to check with the other 2 people she sat and judged with and compared salaries. Is her's comparable??

    Yes? Great! All is good.

No?? Is it still generous considering that all she has to do is sit there smile and pretend like she gives a crap?

    Yes? Great!!! Carry on!

That should have been the first order of business. All the other points were spot on though.

One of the best open letters I've ever read!!! For those who continuously feel the need to compare Paula's 3-mil versus Ryan's 15-mil, please compare and remember their responsibilities. Paula was able to sit and be in whatever "mode" (sober, pilled-out, or whatever) she felt on any particular night simply to tell each contestant how pretty they were or how great and sparkly their spirit was, blah, blah, blah. While Ryan (who don't get me wrong, is not a favorite of mine either) had to keep the show moving and save face on live TV numerous times during her "precious moments". No different than any other corporate office..... those who perform their job well, get paid. Squeaky wheel doesn't necessarily get the oil !!!

True, many viewers will miss Ms Abdul's petulant poutiness, intoxicated stupors, and self-absorbed moping in her exchanges with the fiendish Simon Cowell. I do see the entertainment value in such spectacles.

It remains to be seen if Ellen DeGeneres will make a good match for AI, as pointed out by Chantel. At this point, I wonder if Ellen is "too nice" for this venue.

I genuinely like Ellen, and the character she portrayed in her erstwhile eponymous television show was just as likeable.... UNTIL the lifestyle choice thing became front and center in every episode and decimated what had been funny, light, and airy entertainment. Let us hope that the same pitfall is not repeated.

I will not be watching this season or any other season for that matter. Having Paula Abdul gone from AI is like Lucy being gone from "I Love Lucy". The powers that "be" should not have insulted one of their stars the way they did, and should have paid her a "like" salary. Oh, greed and punishment....

I was never a huge fan of Paula Abdul's, but "was" of AI, and subsequently a fan of Paula's now.

AI never should never have gotten the other woman "what's her name"...I really don't know it. Really don't think Ellen is a match, a gimmick, a hook for some, but not a match at all.

She probably just wants to retire and doesn't have the heart to tell the Idol fans and, instead, is playing this "poor pity Paula" scam.

Um, people... does anyone remember watching Ms Abdul's behaviour in episodes of the defunct reality train wreck show "Hey, Paula!"? Do you remember her reactions to the well-meaning efforts of her really quite talented AND CARING staff in the many ventures of launching her businesses, promoting her publicity, etc? Hint: (whiney beech).

That's right, she sabotaged and frustrated all of their hard work with self-centered tantrums, tearful outbursts, wrong interpretations, irrational behaviour – and a LOUD MOUTH! I was genuinely embarrassed for her staff and even felt the same way for her. No wonder the film producers of the movie Bratz, with whom she was consulting, fired her by sending a text message to her phone. They could not tolerate her haywire mess of emotions.

Ms Abdul's latest contretemps surrounding American Idol exhibit the same out-of-control, poor-me, it's-all-about-me attitude that has tanked her career and relationships for years.

But it is hard to argue against the wishes of your boss, even a nice one. Do not worry, people, her staffers do not last very long anyway.

Wow – so many opinions....Ok, first of all – whether or not Paula is great or not is really not the point of this article. Whether she deserved more money or not is really not the point of this article. Whether or not Ellen will help or hurt the show is really not the point of this article - and for everyone that got caught up in those issues, missed the point.

This article is about the image of a celebrity. As a PR professional, I would agree with all of the points made in the article. Do celebrities need a team of professionals? Unfortunately most of them do. Building the career of a movie star, music performer or professional athlete is like building a business. You don't run a multi-million dollar business without marketing and PR. You don't run a multi-million dollar business without strategically planning your next move. So my advice to everyone – including Paula – think before you leap. And Never, Ever burn a bridge – you may need to cross it again some day.

    Dear Sid
Who is "we're"? Showbiz Tonight? The American Public? What a moronic letter. This is a blessing in disguise for Paula. The show is an embarrasment. Now she can move on to bigger, better and more meaningful things.

She's not my favorite singer and her tunes aren't really my style but I respect her as an artists nonetheless. She was/is an excllent correographer and dancer. Maybe people forgot that.

She is also a decent human being taking care to give constructive advise without tearing the contestants apart. She seems to know more about music than anyone else on the panel including Randy though he's recorded with some major artists. "Yo dog" was mostly what he had to say without much helpful input. Paula actually had some insightful words for the singers.

And why should she accept pay that is so low in comparison to the others? She should just take the crumbs while the others run with the millions? Really Sid. This is such blatant descrimination.

Whatever. The show was stupid anyway but now that it's completely turned into a circus I'll find better things to do with my time. I wish Paula lots of luck. She's got guts for demanding what she deserves. The other judges are cowards for not backing her up.

Why does Ryan deserve to make 12 million more than Paula? As far as Ellen, what does she have to do with the music industry? She belongs on last comic standing, not American Idol. All Paula Abdul business aside, Ellen is the worst choice ever for AI judge. I'd rather see Paulie Shore up there. Maybe Big Bird. I'd rather pretend a CG character was real and had sage advice for contestants than try to imagine Ellen with any appropriate experience or thoughts for the show and its performers.

I've been an avid fan of American Idol for many moons, however, I will NEVER watch another episode, ever! I'd put my life on that! (unless the network aPAULAgized!

Paula wasn't my favorite, however, she did stick it out and should have been paid somewhere in the neighborhood of Simon (maybe 50-75% of). The execs are way too greedy. AI is a HUGH cash cow and Simon isn't getting anywhere near what the execs make!!!

So figure that out guys....and goodby American Idol, I'll never be seeing you again and I will miss it, however, you blew it big time with games and greed!

This is silly...the letter that is...who wrote this? Obviously someone who does not have more worthy things on his plate. Although I do love Paula she was really great in the 80's and it was great seeing her on idiol...I also understand why she would expect more $$ if the overated Ryan S. is paid $45 million (for what I will never understand)...why not expect more. But this letter is really immature down right silly...

AI was already becomming way too gimicky to me; I know I will not watch this year...the judges can be really rude at times and this is why so many people today seem to think being rude and crude is cool...Best to you Paula...Regarding Ellen she is funny, but I don't get her being on idiol judge seems like an odd pick oh well...

A very immature, and definitely letter from someone who knows nothing about what happened, the process or about Paula in general. Best to let sleeping dogs lie. Paula has landed on her feet. She always will. She had a great run on a hit show, she made a choice, it's over, and this has to be put to bed. Enough silly, last Tuesday around the water cooler regurgitations. I'm sure Paula knows she has a lot of supporters. Many will miss her on the show where she'd been a long-time mainstay, but she's not there anymore. She's not going to be there. She has found something else to do and it was probably handled well and to her satisfaction. Of the most published recent photos of her, Paula looks beautiful and relaxed.

As the American Idol team gets consumed on itself they continue to lose site of the fact that their original formula is not the same when you no longer have all of the original ingredients. The show without Paula is lessened. This old franchise (old in dog years - by tv standards) has become stale. Bringing DeGeneres will not spark it. I assume the plan is to create a rift between Ellen's ant-sexism and Simon's mucho macho persona. Good luck ... I tuned out when they brought that other lady judge --What's her name?

I agree that Paula got WAY too greedy! She can't live on the 3 Mil? Think about it...she just left the number one show!! She will not find that much success again. I am a Paula fan, but that was a bad move. Her career was already pretty much over. She should have been thanking her lucky stars to be on the Number 1 TV show!

I am also an Ellen fan. I am curious as to what she will bring to the table, but I don't think she is qualified to be a judge. She does not have any sort of music background. She may be entertaining, but she is not qualified to judge a singing competition. She should join Hasslehoff on America's Got Talent!

It doesn't really matter to me, I for one am so tired of all the reality and competition shows. I stopped watchinig Idol a couple of years ago.

I am sorry to see Paula go. She was a major part of the show and will be missed. Ellen will add new fun to the show. But the reason I will rarely watch is that I cannot stand listening to Kara DioGuardi. She is simply irritating and detracts from the show. Surely American Idol can do better than her. I liked having three judges. With four judges, the shows ran long, they had to rush the singers, and I found DioGuardi unpleasant.

I never watch Idol, I would skim for a few seconds but only because Paula was on. Now that she is gone, I would never watch it.... Ellen I love, but I think she should stick to her day time show and she should have not agreed to be on Idol. She should have supported Paula in getting her fair share. I think it's ridiculous to think that all of those men on the show get way more money then Paula who is the only real talented star on the show. I think Ellen and every other woman should have showed solidarity and not taken the position so they would have had to beg Paula to come back. That's just me call me a feminist, but we women don't stick together like we should and that's why we never get equal treatment or pay and I think that's the bottom line here. Whatever Paula does she will succeed because she is genuine.

For those that think Paula is entitled to more, just because Ryan Seacrest got more, you have no idea how he real world works. Unless your whole department is working for minimum wage, when one person gets a raise, everyone in the department does not get the same percentage raise. There is no incentive for anyone to do a good job in that environment.

Paula thought AI needed her as much as she neede AI. Her loopy behavior and minimal contribution made it impossible for the producers to justify a salary increase.

While AI may not be the same without Paula, I'd wait and see the ratings before I would declare the show a dud.

Perhaps, Paula's best move was to leave AI because what little I did see of the show, and im mainly basing this on the season i watched with Jordin Sparks winning, Paula had a substance abuse problem.

I honestly could care less what Paula says or does! She was the least interesting, most repetitious and boring person on Idol and I'm extremely glad to see her go. She never had an original comment to make about the contestants. It seems like she felt her job was to just praise everybody and make them feel good about themselves and their performance, even when it was undeserved. She was too mushy and sweet and, unlike Kara, never gave any constructive creative advice, which I assume she was supposed to be doing. I want a judge like Kara, kind but honest, able to express in clear, non-ambiguous terms what she liked and didn't like about a particular performance, as well as offer constructive advice. I hope Ellen is an improvement, but only time will tell. I wish Simon could be nicer, also, like he is on the British shows. A little more tact would be in order, I think, Simon. BUT, to hire Ellen as her replacement – c'mon American Idol exec's get real – this is going to be a joke. Why not hire a former idol that has been thru it all – these kids that are auditioning are taking this serious. I have been a idol fan from day 1, even went to a Idol on tour concert and really respected the judges – then came Madame Know-It-All Kara, Tara whatever her name is and that was a joke. Now they are hiring a comedian, who has no music background, don't get me wrong, I think Ellen is great – but not as a judge. The show is getting weary-some and
    everybody knows it's fixed.

If I decide to watch- I'll just click past everything but the performances. Most people do that already anyway.

Ellen as Oprah is for sorry old female lemmings. They could have chose an individual that appealed to a wider viewer-ship instead of that clown.

Hi Paula, you are a beautiful person and very talented. But, you have been swept up into a team that has not helped you. I think that you could have stayed on American Idol if you had personally spoken up. But, since you left for bigger and better things, good luck. You are a beautiful, talented young woman who has lots of good things to offer us. Let me for one, say how much I enjoyed watching you on tv and good luck to you.

Dear Paula, I really cannot fathom why Sid Whateverhislastnameis has to drag up "old news" right now....guess he is under pressure to "write something....write anything". Anyway, I won't bore you with my "interpretation" of what happened on the Simon Cowell Show, because whatever happened did happen, so my comment will be brief""good luck to you in your future endeavors>"....and I won't mention DeGeneres right now either.....need some sense that she "understands" what she is in I will pass on that one right now............Sid, if you were trying to find folks to help you stoke an argument (,maybe) or that you really enjoy writing nonsense, that's ok with me, too.........I fall asleep easily when bored.

Well Sid Lipsey I must say that is the stupidest damn thing I have read all day... thank you for being the winner of my "FAILED" vote today.

Give Paula a break. American Idol will not be the same without her and I, for one, will move on to other programs. The powers that be let a great team of judges fall a-part and though I love Ellen, she is not what the show needs. Sorry, Ellen. Good-bye Idol.

Paula doesn't need this lame advice. And Idol with Ellen? Ye Gods! After all these years, for me, it's more free time come January.

    "a star of your caliber"

Is this a joke? She's a has-been and was one while on Idol. Her only success has been her role on this show. Everything else has bombed.

I love Paula, but she made a dumb move, leaving the number one show it the country. I would fire her team, they have no clue what they did to Paula's future, I think they ruined it.
Good luck Paula. You will never find a show again like American Idol.

I absolutely hole-heartedly agree with everything you have said here!! I couldnt have said it better myself!! I think Paula is a wonderful person and was the anchor that held together American Idol. She was always so gracious and heartfelt with her helpful comments to the kids on the show. She seemed like she really wanted to help them all. Paula, you will be missed terribly!!! Even though I do love Ellen as just wont be the same!! Ive watched every episode since the beginning of it and havent missed even one show. Paula makes that show!! Simon is sometimes too brutally honest...Randy is nice as well...but he just isnt the same as Paula. Youll be forever missed Paula!! Good luck on your future endevours!!

Anyone who is truly sweet and caring towards others and moderately intelligent, responsible etc does not need a (PR) team in the first place, because anything said / done will come from the heart. People who have others to answer for them and who have to plan their every word and move have already lost the plot.

Who cares if Paula is gone? She could barely form a coherent sentence and she acted like a crack monkey most of the time. It was embarrassing for her and everyone associated with the show. I wish her well in her future career ventures, which will no doubt include the words "Would you like to Supersize that?"

I agree with your idea overall...the basic problem is...with Ryan getting signed for 15 could Paula possibly work for 3....I mean when was the last time you heard...let's watch AI and see what Ryan is going to say tonight???
