Top 7: Kris Allen does it 'Once'

Open your eyes Kris!

Kris Allen

"Falling Slowly" from "Once" is a very pretty song, and Kris did it justice, despite those closed eyes. He's all spikey-haired intensity, and I'm glad he opted not to play an instrument.

When you have a great voice, isn't that all you really need?

Kris is amazing! Falling Slowly was the perfect song for him. The people that didn' t like it, do not know the song, bottom line. It was an amazing rendition!

He did such a nice job...every time I watch his performance (which has been several times) I like it even more. He a true musician who can sing, play guitar and play piano. WTG, Kris!

First of all, my greatest regret is that I cannot vote! But if I were to be able to, my money would be straight on Kris and Adam. And here's why:

Kris is amazing. He has had so little screen time, and having to be up against the other guys like Adam and Danny (who got loads of hype, btw) he has DEFINITELY not been given enuff credit for the amazing job he's doing. You can tell from every performance he is giving his absolute ALL. Randy needs to clean his ears because I love the song to death and Kris did it justice. He did it good, and honestly, his and Adam's were the best of the night.

Adam, well, after Tracks of My Tears he pretty much solidified his winning position. His vocal range is off the charts!

So vote Kris, and vote Adam, because honestly, Danny is getting boring and Anoop and Matt are slowly losing me. The girls? Out of it. Hated Allisons' version of Aerosmith, thought it was a mess.

Kris was leagues ahead of the other singers last night, not only in song choice, but in selling the song and honoring the reason it was written. People like Adam only sell themselves; they cast away any meaning to the songs. Kris doesn't wail around saying 'look at me,' he simply sings and says 'listen to the song.' I hope he goes far.

I'm sorry to you people who don't understand Kris. As a HUGE fan of the neo-Singer-Songwriter movement, and as a HUGE Adam Lambert fan, Right now I see Kris and actually Megan Corkery as the two most marketable voices in the Top 10. Kris will have a wonderful career playing phenominal venues and making great albums ala Damien Rice and Ray LaMontagne. Megan needs some seriousl voice lessons to learn to contain that cannon of a voice, but will fit amazingly into the Adele and Colby Calais vein. Adam is a force. I believe he was born about 25 years too late, and needed to front one of the theatrical metal bands of the early 80's, but the guy could bring some of that sound back in the Emo-pop world that I am less familiar with.

That being said, with no slight to Danny, we have a great season this year!!

I haven't really focused on Kris throughout the season (weird because he's a fellow Arkansan), but he's definitely growing on me. He first got my attention with his rendition of "Ain't No Sunshine." Last week was okay but didn't fit his style. I've never heard that song before, but the way he sang it was poetic. His transition between falsetto and normal on that high pitch was marvelous. Also, I didn't hear any glaring pitch problems that Randy talked about. Randy's generally respectful and constructive about his critique, but he's not always accurate. Kris did a great job with this song, and I hope he gets to stick around to see what else he does because he's becoming a favorite.

Not sure what it is, but he just doesn't do it for me. I definitely think he's talented and his style would probably do very well in pop music, but just not my cup-o-tea.

    Kris WON'T win this contest.

He's commercial, sure, but for those of you who are saying he was 'best of the night'.....your criteria for making such a claim is abysmally low.

    He's not even top 3.

Watching Kris is like watching Paint dry or grass grow. Maybe even watching paint drying on grass that is growing.

    This guy is BORING!

And it looks like he's had a stroke when he sings.

Please God, let him be booted off this week.

It is amazing that in its 8th season AI is being run like a year-one show. Kris had the most artistic performance of the night, it was relevan (2008 Oscar winner come on). Most of the judges are clueless and the show seems rudderless this year. Tired of watching...

I think Chris really chose a song which captured the spirit of the evening. The song Falling Slowly is amazing, I think Glen Hansard and the Frames are a national treasure for Ireland. To say it is "obscure" is silly, Hansard and Marketa Irglova won the Academy Award for Best Original Song with Falling Slowly. GREAT JOB CHRIS – great song – great movie. Check out the song "Revelate."

Kris practices the ever popular whiney vocals. He has just an average voice and it gets really whiny in the upper register and pitchy in the lower. He is only in the competition because girls think he is so hot(in valley girl accent).

By far the best performance of the night. I think Randy will watch it again today and realize he was very wrong. Kris's version was honest, real and pitch perfect. Very gutsy move and it paid off. I'd love to hear what Paula and Simon thought!

There was zero back story early in the competition - he has literally earned his spot each week.

Dial Idol shows Kris is in the bottom - Will be interesting to see what the judges do if he must sing for his life. He definitely should not get the boot.
I really wished he had sang "Over the Rainbow" - his version of that on youtube is amazing.

As is so often the case, a forum such as this offers much more of a portrait of the people commenting than it sheds light on the subject. As far as that goes, I thought Kris did a fine job with a beautiful, Oscar-winning song. But what's most appalling to me is the insistence on many person's part that what is important about the song choice is that it be a tune they know. Why? Is their world so limited, their fear so great that they can't even hear 2 minutes of a song that's unfamiliar to them? Kris did a smart thing and a brave, unusual one, for 'Idol" contestants, and that's go off the beaten path. (somewhat) Does the world really need another rendition of a song we've heard a million times before? I guess shallow, fearful people are so comforted by the familiar that they have no openness to anything new. Pitiful...

Wow! I don't think I took a breath through the entire song! Amazing! Kris is such an open performer – his emotion, thoughts, etc. all come through to connect with the audience. Absolutely Adam is wonderful as well; however, Kris and Adam are very different types of performers. I think to be an Idol, you have to appeal to the majority of listeners. Kris does that in a way that Adam, who is great in his own right, does not. Go Kris! Top and final 3 should be Kris, Adam, and Allison.

"This guy will be much more commercially successful than Adam. No one wants to listen to Adam scream on their car radio."

Beg to differ with ya – I'm a 48 year old married mother of 2 teens and I just dowloaded "Mad World" by Adam on my phone. I have NEVER downloaded a song from American Idol. Secondly, most people want Adam to start recording NOW. Every week we can't wait to see what he sings. I'm a very busy working mom, and the fact that I look forward to hearing Adam sing is amazing in and of itself.

I've never voted on Idol before because it all seems very Karoake to me but my wife does. However, I have been sucked into it this season but still never voted. I thought this was the best performance of the season. I just voted for the first time and probably the last. It does seem that most people either expect Celine Dion or a Broadway act on the show. Having a great voice and no showmanship can be really boring. On the other hand over doing it makes you KISS and they aren't known for being great musicians. I am not really a fan of Adam's but he has done a great job on the weeks when it keeps it simple and doesn't scream (oversing). I find the yelling that don't fit into the song anoying. I guess I want to hear someone who will make me want to buy a record or a concert ticket and this came the closest all season. Good job Kris.

I guess what Kara meant by obscure was that it's not a song that was played on the radio.

However, even if tonight was the first time you've heard "Falling Slowly", there's no way that anyone can deny just how gut wrenchingly beautiful that song is. Kris made a very smart choice. He dared to pick an "obscure" song and sang the heck out of it without going over the top. I loved what Quentin Tarantino said about Kris' song choice. (I wish I could remember it word for word) He hit the nail right on the head. Kris' song choice really was HIS choice. It showed us that he is in touch with what's current and isn't afraid to showcase what for others might be new. I may be a little biased because I really, really...I mean REALLY love this song but the thing is, I wouldn't have been this happy about it if the performance sucked. Quite frankly, I was afraid when I found out he was gonna sing this song. I just didn't want the song ruined for me and I didn't want Kris to be the cause of that. I should've known better though that with a voice like his, he can never do wrong.

Bottom 3 for sure. Never heard of the movie or the song ... but that's not why I think he's bottom 3. I think he's in the bottom 'cause he mumbled his way through it, was soooo pitchy in parts, and kept his eyes closed for most of it. Not appealing at all. He'll be safe 'cause he wasn't THE worst, but this was I think HIS worst performance so far.

Adam is overly hyped...Heck I can get up there & scream like he does. His music will not sell too multiple genres, therefore that does not make a good candidate for AI.

In my opinion the winner should be able to cross over too multiple genres w/out a problem at all (i.e. Carrie Underwood & Kelly Clarkson)

This was really bad .. poor song choice and you could barely hear the lyrics or understand his rendition. I sure hope he is in the bottom 3 or something is seriouly wrong here. Kara is just nuts and should not be a judge. Randy was spot on! Kris needs to go – he is nothing but cute boyish looks and can't sing. He really would not sell very many records – he has no range.

    Wonderful, understated performance.

Too bad the producers and judges of the show can't get their act together and give the contestants the performance time and follow-up critique time they deserve. I think FOX could easily cut a few commercial promos for their own shows to allow more time instead of rushing the end.

Thank goodness Kara was able to get a few positive words about Kris' performance in after Randy's negative comments. I think a lot of votes are cast listening to what the judges say, and by having only two of the four judges make comments was a big slight to the contestants.

FOX and Idol producers...in my book, you're in the bottom three and the contestants should all be safe!!!!!

They said tonight that only 2 judges could provide comment because they ran over time last week. Well guess what.....they ran over again this week with only 2 judges providing comment. The problem is NOT the judges it's the DAM COMMERCIALS!!!!!!!! In past years they always had 2 singers before they had a commercial. This year they have as much commercial time as they have program time because they have a commercial after "EVERY SINGER"!!! This is getting rediculous and I am getting tired of watching nothing but commercials!!!!

This guy will be much more commercially successful than Adam. No one wants to listen to Adam scream on their car radio.

The song "Once" won the 2008 Academy Award for best song, it is an amazing song from a great indie film. To say it is not well known or an odd choice I think is an injustice to the song itself.

    Kris was my favorite tonight!

Comment to Brett – I'm with you on the best of the night and for the reason that you state. That said, I'm a big fan of Adam's and what he brings to this competition.

Wow.... kudos to Kris for picking a great and modern song. Good to know that at least one of these contestants acknowledges that there has been fantastic movie music in the last decade!

My mouth dropped after the first little part of the song on how AMAZING it is. I've heard the original and I've heard his. My wife and I are speechless about how great it is. I have nothing to say other than he should be 1st now. Nobody else can match this performance. Just AMAZING!

Very well done. After Adam, the next best of the night. Randy is completely clueless.

Best of the night. An understated and controlled performance is much more difficult, impressive when done correctly, and artistic than a flashy over-done and melodramatic show of which we've seen a lot this season.

I think Kris has a great voice. I'm a big fan of the film and the song and I thought Kris did a wonderful job with it.I liked that he focused on the vocals and really sang from the heart. Randy is an a$$ – I'm glad that Kara gave Kris the props he deserved. Excellent performance.
