Amazing M.I.A. and 'brave' Jennifer Hudson

We're all marveling backstage at how an absolutely about to burst pregnant M.I.A. can do her thing on stage - and do it so well!

Meanwhile, a couple of her fellow female singers, Estelle and Carrie Underwood, find themselves very impressed with Jennifer Hudson's performance on the show, calling it "brave." There is a palpable sense of empathy here in the backstage area for Hudson and how she's coping with the tragic deaths of three of her family members. (Ed. note: Entry originally said "two." We regret the error.) When she concluded her song this sometimes sleepy press area burst out into applause.

We also trying to process the Chris Brown news, which has developed considerably since we've all been back here filing stories for our various media outlets. Will any of the winners yet to come back stage have any news or insight into the situation? I would think not, given that they've been in the show for the past couple of hours, but we'll see.

Sorry but MIA was a disgusting sight and not for being pregnant, dressed and dancing like a whore, I don't consider that amazing, she has no dignity and is the most ordinary woman i've seen.

M.I.A was doing her job as a singer....while pregnant. I worked at my job until I gave birth – two weeks after my due date

M.I.A could have slipped and hurt herself while dancing around. I could have slipped and hurt myself walking up the stairs to my desk, here at the office.

Her outfit was um..."Interesting". So what...I was 9 months pregnant and I wore a bikini. Why is everyone ashamed of a pregnant woman's body? Nothing wrong with something natural.

Plus, if M.I.A can still be that spry right before giving birth, good for her.

I think there is nothing wrong with a pregnant lady walking around on stage. It's encouraged for pregnant people to walk around and even exercise during their pregnancies. Now, that outfit, on the other hand, wasn't cute but there are a lot of fashion police emergencies at events such as these. It gives us something to talk about.

Besides, when will the whole body image issue rest. If people aren't perfect, they're ridiculed. I bet the majority of the people who posted those nasty comments wouldn't get on stage in front of millions and say "hi" much less perform while pregnant.

Jennider Hudson did a wonderful job and I am impressed that she even showed up. I would still by crying my eyes out.

The only reason we are even seeing MIA anywhere on any stage is because that baby in her stomach belongs to the son of one of the music world's most prominent executives. They are also engaged to be married. Nepotism much?

She is nothing special, pregnant or not. She is EXTREMELY overrated and I could think of many more artists, and even regular people, who could be much better in her place.

MIA should not have got the chance to perform that night.

She supports a terrorist group which has been banned by the United States as a terrorist organisation.

The GRAMMY awards should not harbor such persons.

Its like having an OSAMA BIN LADEN supporter on the grammy stage.

Completely outrageous and idiotic by the organisers.

Goodness gracious, aren't we a bunch of superficial ninnies. She barely moved about, and was given a small amount to sing. Her fashion was... strange, but it's not like we've never seen strange fashion at the Grammys. People ranting and wailing about her need to get lives.

And she's also one of the most talented musicians working today. Swagger like C.U.S. is dead wrong. We'll be listening to Arular and Kala long after we're done with Lil' Wayne.

Lip syncing is far from amazing... The Grammys are supposed to be about the best musicians and performers and then we have LIP SYNCING? Might as well just have a dj spinning pop records. Let's face it, the Grammys are a joke anyway and no one in the industry considers them relevant (except to fool the general public into spending money on sub-par artists) . Even the blog writers who kiss butt to get in good with the pop stars they blindly adore must know they are a complete farce. This blog is either a big joke, or the author didn't even bother to watch the show he's reporting on.

The comment by BeeG above about Jennifer Hudson being somehow to blame for her family members' murders is purely reprehensible. First and foremost, the victims were killed by someone they were close to and trusted. Domestic violence isn't even remotely limited a particular race or income level. Even if she'd moved everyone she knew to a secure compound in Nebraska, that wouldn't have protected them from a fellow family member.

And for heaven's sakes, everyone, pregnant women are made of muscle and bone, not tissue paper! Dancing around in sneakers while 8 months pregnant is probably less dangerous than climbing in and out of the bathtub, and no one's suggested that expectant mothers shouldn't bathe... The idea that the sight of a pregnant woman's stomach is enough to send the population into hysterics is a pretty sad statement about our misogynistic distaste for a woman who is DOING things rather than just serving as a decoration.

M.I.A was great – and for all the ignorant people who obviously don't get that yes, pregant however far long – she can walk safely around a stage and – what she had like 4 lines she actually sung from her own song, and then the rest was just plugging the chorus for the others – she should have been able to sing her whole song which is way better than the rap version. She is eclectic in her outfits which makes her original – at least she brought something new to the stage. It's wasn't an big deal and props to her – do you think she was really going to pass up being on the Grammy's, good for her. Jennifer Hudson was awesome. too.

Not sure if I'd take the comment below to heart considering it looks like a 5 year old wrote and punctuated it. MIA's performance was really awesome, as always. I'm sure she consulted with her doctor, as did the Grammy committee with their doctor/insurers, as to whether she could perform. I'm never disappointed when I see her.

em – there is NO way you ran a 5k 9 months pregnant. Walked fast – yes. RUN? Absolutely not.

Diva – learn how to spell before you leave another comment.

BriGuy – classic hit on Diva....LOVED it! 🙂

I, myself, am not familiar w/M.I.A. I've only heard one song & didn't care for it. I didn't watch the Grammys, but I saw a picture of what she wore & thought it was atrocious (yes, Diva, that is spelled correctly). As a woman who carried 3 children to full term (1 was 2 weeks overdue), I worked all the way up to my due dates. My husband & I were even enroute to the hospital when I was in labor when he stopped on the side of the road to help a guy put out his car fire (my husband is a volunteer firefighter) – a helper to the end. I, personally, probably wouldn't have gone onstage like she did. But, as long as she had the go-ahead from her doctor, there's nothing wrong w/it. It's amazing how sheltered & protected a baby is in utero – a LOT must happen in order for the child to be injured. I just don't understand why people think this is such a big deal.

Now, Chris Brown on the other hand......

    Nothing happened.

MIA's water did not burst. She did not slip nor did she fall nor did her baby fall out of her va-jay-jay on the stage to the horror of the television viewing audience. She sang her part and did it well.

All this handwringing and poo-pooing about whether she SHOULD have done it or not is ridiculous. It is done. Get over it.

Her body. Her choice. Not yours.

Sometimes I wonder if people are slow by practice or accident.

Doesn't anyone realize that water amplifies sound? To that poor fetus, that performance had to sound like being in the middle of a war zone! Hopefully no hearing damage before the kid even had a shot, but that's what happens when a parent acts in their own self-interest instead of the baby's (Octuplets anyone?!?)

i personally don't object too much to M.I.A. performing pregnant. If her kid was born onstage at the Grammys, it wouldn't make a difference to me. Why should it matter what she was wearing either? She's not a fashion model. She's barely an artist. She might be Grammy material but I guarantee she's not classic material...something we'll be listening to 10 years from now. That performance in particular? Thank goodness Kanye lost the AutoTunes for this one. Wayne is a great performer. Jay...enough said and T.I. surprisingly sucked both performances I saw from him. I give mad props and kudos to Estelle and 'Ye, Adele, Jennifer Hudson, and even Davey Grohl stood out. I think he was trying to drown out Paul McCartney. I would have. And tsk tsk to Stevie Wonder for even considering performing with the Jonas Bros...

bottom line. the Grammys are a joke.

But more importantly think of the consequences she and her unborn child could have endured if anything were to happen...ex: slip n fall
her ass should've been at home or in the hospital getting served like a royal Queen...

OH!! N Jennifer Hudson, i dont know what to say about her anymore..
i love her singing abilities, she did an excellent job at the grammy's and im terribly sorry for her families passing, but im just very upset with her as an individual and a choice she did not make..
Put it like this if I where to win AMERICAN IDOL i would not be having my family STILL living on the SOUTH SIDE OF CHICAGO..
come on ppl thats one of the most viloent cities in AMERICA. and she knew that..
And im NOT blaming her for her families loss, but all im saying is, is that it could have been avoided with her help.
Overall, i hope the best for her and her family.

A lot of people here are talking about her clothes, whether she has class, her politics, etc., while pretending like you're critiquing her decision as a mother to perform on stage. Sounds like some of you guys just don't like M.I.A.

And setting back women?? I don't think she set back women at all. When will the day come that a female in the spotlight can't do something without people talking about her setting back or advancing women? I'm a woman, and I don't think her performing while pregnant has any impact on me whatsoever. Same as how Chris Brown beating up his girlfriend (if that's what really happened) doesn't set back the black race. They're just individuals, not representatives of a gender or race.

Lighten up, guys. Where I come from, women are working on farms and selling stuff in the market up until the baby pops out.

MIA was great. People need to stop acting like pregnant women are handicapped, we're not in '50s anymore. Kids these days are listening to music by artists that beat their girlfriends, talking about nothing, and they call MIA a new low? I really think people should know their facts before they speak. Not a fan of rap music, and honestly had never even heard of MIA, but I absolutely loved the fact that she is healthy and moving and taking care of herself! For God sake's she had sneakers on–not 5 inch heels!

Off topic from your blog postings regarding the Grammy's....but I was wondering your feeling on the exclusion of LeRoi Moore from the tribute video to pay respects to all the names in the music industry who have passed away in the last year. I would certainly expect that Mr. Moore, long time saxophone player for the Grammy Award winning Dave Matthews Band, would be a prominent enough figure in the music industry to be honored. I feel like this is a slap in the face and, judging from DMB member's Stefan Lessard and Dave Matthews' Twitter accounts, it looks like they feel the same way. I hope the Grammy Foundation addresses this oversight immediately.

Amazing MIA? You mean the girl who lip synced her 40 seconds of singing?

You don't listen to much music, do you?

I agree that MIA did not belong on stage. I flipped the channel during that fiasco.

There is nothing improper, wrong or unsafe about M.I.A. performing on the Grammy's on the day her baby is due. As long as her water did not break and her doctor gave the go ahead, she's fine. Plenty of women are active until the moment they deliver a baby.

I think calling her amazing for performing pregnant is a bit dramatic, as she didn't do anything except walk across the stage and dance a bit, but it got you to read the article, right?

I'm highly impressed with Jennifer Hudson. I think she's an extraordinary talent and I wish her nothing but the best. She has a beautiful soul and and I think it's amazing that she is able to perform in lieu of her family tragedy. With her amazing talents as a singer/actress, her potential is broad. Much love and blessings to her!

    AMAZING MIA?????????
If that is what you call amazing, then thefuture of the industry industry truley is in doubt..
I think the pregant woman strutting on the stage ready to give birth should go hang out with the woman who gave birth to 8 kids, cause they truley ,niether of them, have a clue when it comes to proper raising of a child and proper care, MIA,MAZING??? yeah but in a positive manner.
