12:58 AM ET

I’m signing off. Thanks for following the Marquee blog tonight!

12:58 AM ET

A few reporters are making a mad rush to pack up and get out. Others are sticking around to write their stories.

12:57 AM ET

“You sometimes forget how important film festivals are,” Boyle says

12:55 AM ET

Boyle: I did forget someone in my speech tonight — my agent. Please report this

12:53 AM ET

Boyle: I think you find out a lot about the film by talking to journalists, which is kind of weird to admit. It’s important

12:52 AM ET

“Danny would have done this for a film that wasn’t in awards contention. Danny’s done this for every movie he’s ever made,” producer says

12:51 AM ET

“Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle. That [quote] just gets it. Films have that heart,” Boyle says

12:49 AM ET

Boyle thanks Toronto reporter for his town’s film festival for giving them his start

12:48 AM ET

Boyle: You can see it’s going to happen more and more. The world’s shrinking a bit in a wonderful way

12:47 AM ET

It’s the measure of the man that in his acceptance speech he apologizes for a mistake, producer says of Boyle

12:46 AM ET

Boyle: I still believe all films are imperfect

12:45 AM ET

Rotten Tomatoes reporter is getting some jabs from the “Slumdog” producer and director

12:44 AM ET

Boyle is quoting poetry about America traveling to the moon and comparing it to India’s journey with this film

12:43 AM ET

Boyle: We were concerned with bringing the film’s small stars from India. It’s impossible to imagine what it’s like for them to be here

12:41 AM ET

“Actually I know,” producer says. “They’re not. Unless they’re lying to me. But they have grown up before our eyes.”

12:40 AM ET

Boyle: I have no idea if our lead actor and actress have a romance going on in real life. But they’ve been amazing

12:40 AM ET

We made it for 7 million pounds and it’s gaining big box office results. That’s good business, “Slumdog” producer says

12:39 AM ET

Boyle: We’ve got to protect small films because that’s where everybody starts

12:38 AM ET

Boyle: One of the lovely things about this evening is that it’s a triumph for this kind of film

12:37 AM ET

Boyle is ecstatic… I love it!

12:37 AM ET

*chance

12:37 AM ET

Boyle: It’s a change to get yourself lost in romance, and we all want to be lost in romance.

12:36 AM ET

Danny Boyle is here! “It’s a love story but it’s heavily disguised,” Boyle says

12:27 AM ET

A collective “awww…” when it’s announced Hugh Jackman will not be coming back to talk to us

12:24 AM ET

Still waiting on Danny Boyle…

12:17 AM ET

Penn: I’ve known Rourke for more than 25 years. I’ve looked up to, advised, admired him. He’s one of our most talented actors

12:16 AM ET

I’m more interested right now in what we’re going to do to tell him that we’re going to support him in these civil rights issues, Penn says

12:15 AM ET

Penn: I want to believe that Obama’s stand on gay marriage is just political right now

12:14 AM ET

I’d tell them to find themselves. It’s a demonstration of emotional cowardice, Penn says of sign holders

12:13 AM ET

Penn: To see this culture of ignorance and hateful signs outside, there’s nothing more important than the themes in this movie

12:12 AM ET

Winslet gives Penn a hug before she heads out

12:11 AM ET

Sean Penn is up next…

12:08 AM ET

Winslet: It was absolutely fantastic working in Germany. Crew and cast were all completely committed

12:07 AM ET

The fashion questions just always make me laugh, Winslet says after being asked about her dress

12:06 AM ET

Winslet: I think there’s a secret in having some kind of belief in yourself

12:05 AM ET

Winslet: I have to tell you, winning is really a lot better than losing. Really, a lot better

12:04 AM ET

Winslet: I still feel like a little girl from Redding. My mom won a pickled onion competition before Christmas

12:04 AM ET

She’s hugging and kissing a reporter named Paz from the Daily Reporter in London

12:03 AM ET

Winslet: I practiced my face for when I didn’t get called quite a bit

12:03 AM ET

She thinks for awhile and picks Susan Sarandon =)

12:02 AM ET

Winslet is asked which actor she would pass the nude scene torch to

12:02 AM ET

Winslet: I can’t be responsible for emotional response of the audience to my film

11:59 PM ET

Winslet lets out a “wow” before even being asked a question

11:59 PM ET

Kate Winslet is here!

11:57 PM ET

Waiting on the major category winners to come back to the press room… veteran journalist says it could be up to an hour

11:54 PM ET

Math and journalists don’t mix…

11:54 PM ET

People are checking their watches, calculating by how much time Hugh Jackman underestimated his show’s length

11:54 PM ET

Cheers and applause ring out for “Slumdog Millionaire”… either that or for the end that’s in sight

11:49 PM ET

This is the quietest I’ve heard it in the press room all night… I don’t think anyone is getting food right now

11:46 PM ET

Reporter just cheered: Yay politics!

11:42 PM ET

A mutter from behind me… “He’s just so hot” . I’m guessing it’s Pitt she’s talking about

11:32 PM ET

Reporter next to me has gone 5 for 6 on his predictions…. Winslet was an easy one

11:30 PM ET

Back to Japanese for the foreign language film winner “Departures”…. tuning out and trying to read lips for who wins best actress

11:27 PM ET

The energy really picked up before these last few categories… maybe the caffeine is kicking in

11:25 PM ET

Dickens: We had no idea at the beginning that we would have this kind of night (with seven Oscar wins so far)

11:24 PM ET

Chris Dickens (film editing winner for “Slumdog”): The challenge was to get it to fit together neatly and down to a reasonable length

11:20 PM ET

Cheers ring out from the press room for Danny Boyle

11:18 PM ET

Pookutty: To reach here has taken me 13 years, and I had to forget that work for this film for more natural sounds from Mumbai

11:15 PM ET

Sound mixing for “Slumdog” winners: Resul Pookutty is first technician from India to be nominated and win Oscar

11:12 PM ET

Had hardly any looping to do, King says, Ledger was completely done before his death.

11:11 PM ET

Richard King, sound editor for “The Dark Knight,” says they had hoped for more nominations but he’s feeling good about his win

11:07 PM ET

A gasp just went out after the foreign film nomination from the other side of the press room…

11:06 PM ET

The work on the “Dark Knight” and “Iron Man” created a level playing field for this category, visual effect winner says

11:05 PM ET

Brad Pitt was absolutely amazing to work with, visual effects winners say

11:04 PM ET

10:58 PM ET

Kunio Kato says meeting Jack Black was most exciting moment of the night — he always wanted to be funny

10:57 PM ET

The Japanese animated short film winner is here. I feel like I’m at the Epcot Center tonight — around the world in 80 languages!

10:50 PM ET

Mylan: Each story just has its own length. This was a journey story. Her inner beauty gets to be matched with outer beauty

10:50 PM ET

Documentary short subject winner Megan Mylan says documentaries face challenge of getting audience to understand they’re artistic

10:47 PM ET

Documentary winners for “Man on Wire” answering in French! I caught the words “the” and “Oscar”……

10:44 PM ET

We’re very close with Michelle (Matilda’s mother), and we’re in constant contact, sister says

10:43 PM ET

I think you just have to look at Matilda to know that she’s totally like her daddy, mother says

10:42 PM ET

We’ve seen footage of Heath’s final film (he only completed 1/3 of film), sister says, we believe it will be amazing

10:41 PM ET

Heath loved acting and films since he was very young, father says, but he was extremely talented in a lot of areas

10:39 PM ET

I think Ledger would have been quietly pleased and proud of what he did, mother says

10:38 PM ET

We were a little bit overwhelmed actually, mother says, we were really relived and excited to hear his name

10:37 PM ET

Oscar statue belongs to Matilda so it will go somewhere secure until she’s ready for it, Ledger’s sister says

10:36 PM ET

When he came home at Christmas, Ledger knew he would get nomination, sister says

10:35 PM ET

Applause rings out in the press room

10:35 PM ET

Family of Heath Ledger here… father, mother and sister

10:29 PM ET

A boom goes the dynamite reference at the Oscars… I never thought I’d see the day

10:20 PM ET

Jochen Alexander Freydank, live action short film winner for “Toyland,” is now answering questions in German — I lose again

10:18 PM ET

Academy just asked if we wanted Ledger’s family back for questions… a resounding yes (with a side of adult-like “um, duh”)

10:17 PM ET

Mantle almost forgets his Oscar as he leaves the press room

10:15 PM ET

My job is to walk into the space and try to explore the space with the story in mind, Mantle says… you have to snoop around

10:14 PM ET

Mantle: Didn’t have a lot of time to to shoot, improvised a lot

10:13 PM ET

Cinematography winner for “Slumdog Millionaire” Anthony Dod Mantle says “Dogville” didn’t affect the way he made this film

10:09 PM ET

I don’t think anyone is paying attention to O’Connor.. they’re all frantically writing about Heath Ledger’s win

10:07 PM ET

“I’m sure it will do fantastic things for my career, but you do not ever realize that you’re going to get this,” O’Connor says of Oscar

10:06 PM ET

Everyone is waiting for the supporting actor winner… but best costume designer Michael O’Connor is here

09:59 PM ET

Academy worker asks if anyone has questions for Sci-tech award winner… dead silence in the press room

09:59 PM ET

Animation is a great medium to make metaphor a reality, Stanton says

09:56 PM ET

Stanton: We’ve been trying to go that deep since our first movie at Pixar — try to make sophisticated films that just happen to be animated

09:54 PM ET

I expected to appeal to a minority, not a majority, Stanton says

09:54 PM ET

Best animated feature “Wall-E” Andrew Stanton: Wall-E was really the most unique film I could have made

09:50 PM ET

Beaufoy: If you can get Hollywood and Bollywood combining you have a whole new genre

09:47 PM ET

If you make a film in England about love, it’s too complicated, Beaufoy says

09:45 PM ET

It’s a place of massive extremes, Beaufoy says of Mumbai, India

09:45 PM ET

It was Toronto Film Festival when we finally realized we had a good film on our hands, Beaufoy says

09:43 PM ET

“Everything may change but I promise to keep the soul,” Beaufoy says of adapting

09:42 PM ET

Beaufoy says “Slumdog” children are having a blast despite worries about bringing them to the Oscars from India

09:41 PM ET

Simon Beaufoy (adapted screenplay): Oscar statue — this iconic image of cinema is heavy

09:39 PM ET

I don’t know if I was going to survive it, Cruz says about the moment before her award announcement

09:38 PM ET

Cruz talks about having an accent. She says “we are all mixed together more and more everyday and that has to be reflected in cinema”

09:36 PM ET

Cruz: [Woody Allen is] not a man of too many words but he’s honest. And that’s what counts for me.

09:35 PM ET

A reporter’s computer just died. She’s freaking out and can’t get it to reboot

09:33 PM ET

Woody Allen sent her flowers!

09:33 PM ET

Cruz says she’s grateful to the directors for giving her opportunity to play women who are outside her personality

09:32 PM ET

They lost the translator for Kunio Kato… we may not get to ask the short film winner any questions

09:29 PM ET

Cruz: [On stage] I said that I wanted to dedicate it to all the actors of my country and those that are watching it there at home

09:27 PM ET

They’re asking Penelope Cruz questions in Spanish… I knew I shouldn’t have taken French in college

09:25 PM ET

Black says the Academy noticed “Milk” when Sean Penn really captured Harvey’s essence

09:23 PM ET

Black is tearing up talking about Harvey…

09:22 PM ET

“I just don’t believe it yet. Maybe when I see my mom in a few moments I’ll believe it,” Black says

09:22 PM ET

Black says his whole journey has been “out of body” … he hopes award will inspire others in civil rights movement

09:20 PM ET

Dustin Lance Black (original screenplay for “Milk”) says he hopes President Obama will repeal “don’t ask, don’t tell”

09:16 PM ET

I’m seated next to a reporter from CBC — how did they manage to seat the only Canadians in the room together?

09:09 PM ET

I met the animators for these short films… it’s exciting to actually know some of the “lesser” category nominees

09:07 PM ET

Stories that begin “I grew up… ” are never short enough for an acceptance speech

08:47 PM ET

Best supporting actress goes to Penelope Cruz

08:45 PM ET

It’s always touching when an actress cries just for her nomination… applause for Viola Davis well-deserved

08:36 PM ET

I see a Broadway play called “The Oscars” in my future

08:34 PM ET

I give Hugh Jackman’s dancing skills a 10!

08:22 PM ET

Penelope Cruz found her dress years ago… shows truly beautiful fashion lastss

08:21 PM ET

Is anyone else watching the video of the envelope men twirl on the red carpet like Vana White?

08:17 PM ET

A fellow reporter tells me enthusiastic bleacher fans sit there for up to nine hours before any celebrities arrive

08:10 PM ET

Off to grab some food. This feast looks almost as good as Wolfgang Puck’s…

08:09 PM ET

Made it! Watching media women try to run in heels is hilarious

08:01 PM ET

Missed Kate Winslet… held up at security gate

Meryl Streep and Amy Adams share air kisses

07:46 PM ET

Jessica Biel, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Daniel Craig just zoomed by

07:41 PM ET

Anne Hathaway’s dress is all the bling she needs. I admire her poise

07:40 PM ET

Sarah Jessica Parker could sleep comfortably on her dress -it’s that poofy — but she’s gorgeous as always

07:37 PM ET

Meryl Streep has a great giggle… I never would have expected that out of her!

07:35 PM ET

Queen Latifah says she’ll be singing “I’ll be seeing you”

07:34 PM ET

I’m being blinded by the camera flashes next to me. They’re trying to keep up with the huge flow of celebs

06:00 PM ET

Yeah == we applaud some one for how well they hold up a sign — we are not a nation of cowards. We are a nation of consumer clowns.

rso   February 22nd, 2009 6:09 pm ET

What a waste, all the money from this event should go to people left homeless in this current economy. These rich people have some nerve having a party to pat each other on their backs. Give the awards out and just give away all the money spent on a night like this. Oh well, I guess we as Americans are never going to get the change we wanted, only rich people lying to us until we have enough and really take it to the street.

Have fun rich people….

Diane Cameron   February 22nd, 2009 6:16 pm ET

You people are fools. Why do we let people who happen to have one occupation hold an awards ceremony where they pat each other on their backs? Why do we watch as if it’s important?

OK here we go! Now we giving gold statues to children from India, what about all the children from America that have made much better films? Hollywood is a joke, cause Slumdog is a terrible movie….besides we all know it’s about politics

Cindy   February 22nd, 2009 7:10 pm ET

Your coverage is ATROCIOUSso far. Could you possibly put more irrelevant images on the screen so we can’t actually SEE ANYTHING!! Get rid of the useless spotlights. I’m really enjoy the bottom image of LA in lights. NOT! We want to see the women in their dresses and their partners who are with them. I do not want nor need to see your hostess (sorry Brooke-get out of the way and off the screen). You seem to be unaware of why we make a point of watching the red carpet. SIMPLIFY people. SIMPLIFY. cindy

Lisa   February 22nd, 2009 7:11 pm ET

Let’s keep everything in perspective. This is just entertainment. How bold to come out and flaunt such extravagance in the midst of our world’s greatest economic crisis. Let’s keep focused and remember all those waiting in line for jobs–not those lining up on red carpets.

Yassin   February 22nd, 2009 7:12 pm ET

Slumdog deserves best picture, no doubt…

Karen   February 22nd, 2009 7:12 pm ET

Slumdog Millionaire best movie of the year!

Carol Reed   February 22nd, 2009 7:13 pm ET

In a time of economic crisis, why is Hollywood being so hypocritical with such extravagance? Where is their sacrifice? The money spent tonight should go to the poor and homeless in America!

Bev   February 22nd, 2009 7:13 pm ET

When you’re homeless it is often difficult to find any value in the excess of celebrity lifestyles. On the other hand it can take our minds off our own lack and possibly inspire a homeless child to never be homeless again.

John   February 22nd, 2009 7:17 pm ET

Where did the news go? If I wanted to see “celebrities” all night I’d be watching ABC. Do we really need this on CNN?

We need to stop trying to build all these false dreams on consumerism and excess, this is one of the greatest display of excess and foolish ways known to Americans. It is very hypocritical to criticize expenditures related to war when such expense is committed to such expendable frivality available to only a selected few entertainers and those who wish they were there.

Anonymous   February 22nd, 2009 7:22 pm ET

ok to all you idiots that think slumdog is a bad movie, well too bad because its a wonderful movie that is going to win best picture. and no its not about politics and so what if they are indians “riclewis” it doesnt matter who they are it matters how good of actors/actresses they are jeez

I hope “Slumdog” wins because Danny Boyle made the “best of movie
making”!!! The love story was untouchable and precious. The kids were adorable and courageous. It was a needed education for most Americans.and a reminder to some of our American roots of struggle.

Brad Pitt was fantastic in “BB”. What a great actor he has developed
into!!
Also, his mother in “BB” was a fantastic actress and very loveable!

Kate Winslet has taken the cake this year! Not only is she a very,
very nice person, but the greatest actress along with Meryl Streep!
Thanks for the fabulous evening! Caroline

A ÔMillionÕ Slumdog

A typical masala movie packed with romance, violence and catchy music, directed by Danny Boyle, hits the charts all over the world, wins several golden globes, is nominated for 10 Oscars, and yet surrounded by protest and controversies in India.
Interesting quote from a famed Bollywood actor, "If Slumdog Millionaire projects India as a third-world, dirty, underbelly developing nation, causes pain, disgust among nationalists, and patriots, let it be known that a murky underbelly nation exists and thrives, even in the most developed nations". There is no doubt that India thrives, even in the most developed nations, and Indians are proud of that however, what we are doing to help the "poverty porn" India, much less ignoring it.
Are we upset about a westerner portraying the real side of India? The talent exists in India for such movies, but Bollywood producers, fixated with making flimsy films about the lives of the middle class, will never throw their weight behind such projects. Over 80% of Indians live in less than $2.50 a day, as are 40% of all malnourished children. In Mumbai alone, 2.6 million children live on the street or in slums, and 400,000 work in prostitution. These people are absent from mainstream Bollywood cinema. Instead, Bollywood produces movies like, Rock On and Love Story 2050, full of affluent young Indians, desperately trying to look cool and modern.
The truth is middle and affluent class Indians, too often ignore that countless people exist in conditions close to hell, yet maintain, a breath-taking exuberance, dignity and decency. These people embody the tremendous spirit and strength of India, and its civilization. They deserve the attention of Bollywood film-makers. I have no doubt that Slumdog Millionaire will encourage, many more honest films to be produced in India.

Hi Marquee,

I don’t normally blog about these events other than watch it on CNN, but I am forced to do that today because of one person I have admired over the years - Shatee Kapool. I am so glad to see Shatee Kapool doing what he did so well on Slumdog.

JOE TONTO   February 22nd, 2009 7:54 pm ET

GO BRAD!!! You will win!

Dev   February 22nd, 2009 7:54 pm ET

This is my first year watching Gold Rush Pre-Oscar show and I must say……this is my last year. Unfortunately, the hotel where I’m staying does not have E!. This coverage is terrible!!! I hate the question and answer sections and there is no one interviewing the stars on the red carpet. Stick to reporting the news CNN, entertainment is not your area of expertise!!!

Caitlin Z   February 22nd, 2009 7:55 pm ET

Kate Winslet and Heath Ledger were both fantastic!!!

Please stop zooming in on Lisa Rinna’s fake lips and cheek implants…they are truly hideous when seen up close and personal.

Evan   February 22nd, 2009 7:59 pm ET

If “Slumdog Millionaire” wins Best Picture, the AMPAS will anoint yet another film with supremely lazy writing as “great” when it’s not. Perhaps the Academy’s love with mediocrity has something to do with declining ratings?

Doug   February 22nd, 2009 7:59 pm ET

Private Ryan still deserves the Oscar!!!

Who care’s? The economy is in the tank…war has been raging for 8 years, these stars are so out of touch with the rest of us…why glorify them? What skills do they really possess? So they can prance around on a big screen for 2 hours…can they handle being sent away from friends and family for a year at a time, bullets passing by their heads, friends dying in their arms…..get a grip!

Jo   February 22nd, 2009 8:36 pm ET

I have to say I have never posted a comment anywhere but I felt I had too on this. I have watched the awards for a whole lot of years and I am close to an hour into it, and never have I been more entertained, and laughed so much. This show is being presented with the best of class..and the best of entertainment…someone got it verrrrry right this year…and keep them on contract for next year… WTG….and thank you.

Rohit   February 22nd, 2009 9:24 pm ET

And ther oscar goes to “Slumdog Millionaire”

Julie B.   February 22nd, 2009 9:30 pm ET

Reed   February 22nd, 2009 9:32 pm ET

Twilight should win best picture

Reed   February 22nd, 2009 9:35 pm ET

YAAAAAAA W-alle

Randy S   February 22nd, 2009 9:50 pm ET

So…when Jennifer Aniston is on stage, the producer of “The Oscars” felt it neccesary to repeatedly cut to a camera focused on Angelina Jolie. How juvenile. How tabloid. I thought this was supposed to be a classy production.

Linda Baker   February 22nd, 2009 9:50 pm ET

Had to laugh out loud when I saw Ben Stiller dressed up as Joaquin Phoenix. FUNNY!

mpburden16@hotmail.com   February 22nd, 2009 9:52 pm ET

Come on–where are the “Suprises?’” This is a very boring show so far.

Nancy   February 22nd, 2009 9:53 pm ET

Oh please, NO MORE musical numbers!!!!

Cindi Jo   February 22nd, 2009 9:54 pm ET

Musical number with Beyonce is superb!

Marty   February 22nd, 2009 9:59 pm ET

When the Oscars will start because this is a JOKE!

Kim   February 22nd, 2009 10:02 pm ET

Sarah Jessica Parker looks like Glenda the Good Witch to me tonight.

Marty   February 22nd, 2009 10:06 pm ET

The new Producers have ruined years of class and tradition!

And where in the world is the Host?! Doesn’t he suppose to HOST?!

The stage is pathetic. The music is not for the occasion. This is more like MTV show.

Someone have to resign NOW!

I   February 22nd, 2009 10:08 pm ET

Another bad show. The movies & the (oscar) show continue to need improvement. If you were trying to attract a younger audience I don’t think it happened. Heath Ledger was the most attracting act in this years selection.

Kelly   February 22nd, 2009 10:10 pm ET

Love the blog. Where’s the comment on the musical number! It was great!

Rose Furman   February 22nd, 2009 10:13 pm ET

Why did Beyonce even bother showing up for rehearsal when all she did was lip sync!!?!?

Nitin Gautam   February 22nd, 2009 10:14 pm ET

"Slumdog Millionaire" Jai Ho!!!

Anna   February 22nd, 2009 10:15 pm ET

Ben Stiller: Hilarious! That was great! Hahaha! XD

Heath Ledger absolutely deserved his award. I’m sure nobody doubted his win. God bless him and Matilda.

Go Rourke, best actor!

Jessica   February 22nd, 2009 10:17 pm ET

Where is Jack Nicholson?? He is always in the front row and I haven’t seen him yet.

Lou Jaffe   February 22nd, 2009 10:18 pm ET

Oscars should not be given to dead actors and or people who use drugs..giving oscars to them is Glorifying drug use…!!! Life is too beatufiful for these people to trash it…! Give the award to someone who really appreciate life..!! what a loser…!

Marty   February 22nd, 2009 10:19 pm ET

How.Many.Bloody.Commercials!

force   February 22nd, 2009 10:21 pm ET

what was the song that was playing during the documentaries film?

Sunny   February 22nd, 2009 10:22 pm ET

Freida’s beauty is a dazzling reflection that beauty comes in all colors, shapes and sizes. Celebrating the inner-spirit which makes true beauty. Go Frieda!

Ben Smith   February 22nd, 2009 10:22 pm ET

These commercial breaks are killing me. I think there was even one where we didn’t even get to see an award in between commercials!

The show is fabulous, but the frequency and length of the commercials may have me turning off the TV and finding out who won best picture when I wake up tomorrow.

Nik   February 22nd, 2009 10:28 pm ET

Heath Ledger only won because he passed away. His performance as ‘Joker’ was average at best- it is a character that requires no acting skills. Any average actor could have done what he did. It was a shame that the other nominees in that category were not even considered (as Heath’s win was pretty much determined when he died). Heath is a great actor, but he DID NOT deserve an Oscar for this movie and role. Those who feel he did an ‘amazing job’ are just morons! Sorry! Tellin’ it like it is dudes and dudettes.

Viraj Patel   February 22nd, 2009 10:29 pm ET

Slumdog Millionaire was a good movie, no doubt, but it definitely did not show both sides of India. All it portrayed was the poverty. All this movie did was fuel the ignorance that lives in the minds of most Americans. India is not full of poor people, and is not a place that is regressing. India is making significant progress and its cities are quite a sight. It should not be looked at as a place where most people live in shacks or heaps of garbage, the standard of living is improving. For an Indian in India, watching Slumdog Millionaire must have felt horrible. It would be like the rest of the world watching a movie about cowboys and assuming that that is what the United States is like, no wonder is was rejected by the majority of Indian nationals. Although the Director made a good movie, he in NO way, depicted the current state of the MAJORITY of Indians; when a country has 1 billion + people (3x the population of the US and about 1/2 the land), there are bound to be a greater number of poor people in a more condensed location. India has its share of problems but there are plenty of good things about it as well that were not depicted in Slumdog Millionaire.

Rose Furman   February 22nd, 2009 10:35 pm ET

I’m moving with the cheese and bowing to change…overall, I loved the new format of The Oscars. Hugh Jackman is BEYOND talented and has been very enjoyable to watch..aka..HOT!

The stage was beautiful!! The production…lively!

Keeping presenters on stage to present several awards cut down on transition time…nice that they used this time for other points of entertainment.

Nitin Gautam   February 22nd, 2009 10:36 pm ET

"Slumdog Millionaire" did it again :) and has put Bollywood on global map

Nitin Gautam   February 22nd, 2009 10:39 pm ET

“Small Pinki” and “The Final Inch” pictuarised in INDIA, nominated for best documentary film.

hehehe … And award goes to “Small Pinki” :)

Saph   February 22nd, 2009 10:47 pm ET

Angelina and Freida look MAGICAL tonight!!!

Kriss, Washington DC   February 22nd, 2009 10:48 pm ET

To Jeff (8:36 post), please take your own advice and ‘get a grip.’ And…hmmmm…you’re watching this ’self-agrandizing, no-skills’ program … why? I don’t know about anyone else, but I NEED a break from the war and the economy and not being able to afford clothes and food and losing most of my hours at work. Jeff, I sure hope you can afford all of those things because that makes you luckier than most.

John   February 22nd, 2009 11:00 pm ET

I go for Slum dog Millionaire , because it’s different kind of story with reality.

Rahul Rathour   February 22nd, 2009 11:07 pm ET

A.R. Rehman

Maria   February 22nd, 2009 11:11 pm ET

Anyone see Jack Nicholson??

Jim Smith   February 22nd, 2009 11:20 pm ET

What was up with the tribute thing to those who died??? Enough with the fancy camera work, let us see the names of the people and what they did for crying out loud. The freaking script was so small I had to get on my knees in front of the tv. Awful.

Alex   February 22nd, 2009 11:23 pm ET

Whoever was in charge of the In Memoriam needs a kick in the pants. Half the names you couldn’t read because the camera kept moving, distracting from the honours. And I felt seasick afterwards. Where was Patrick McGoohan???

Christina S   February 22nd, 2009 11:25 pm ET

Seriously, great up-to-the-minute reporting. I bet you are star-struck and I wish I could experience it myself. Keep it up, I wish I could be with there with you! :)

Nina   February 22nd, 2009 11:59 pm ET

Freida looked like a magical princess presenting tonight.
FREIDA ROCKS!!!

Nina   February 23rd, 2009 12:04 am ET

Slumdog should not have won best picture or best director, please. The lack of noms/wins for the Dark Knight only solidifies the pretentious genre bias of the academy and will turn off more people to accepting their judgments as legitimate. Also, did I miss something or was Heath Ledger not in the ‘people who died this year’ montage?

I saw Slumdog Millionaire in the beginning of December, 2008 !
I win to see it before it was rated or nominated !
I came home so happy and recommended it everyone !
I have seen it 3 times since then and downlowd the music too.
(The songs get me moving and smiling at work)

Congratulations to DEV, Frieda, the kids, Danny, and all the people in India in the movie.

This was a great movie. I am so happy that it got so many awards tonight !
