After news broke last Friday that former First Lady Betty Ford had died, one of the first statements CNN received was from Stevie Nicks. The legendary Fleetwood Mac singer sent just one succinct sentence: "As far as I'm concerned, Betty Ford saved my life."
An hour or so later, she followed it up with a phone call - made as she was driving to a Vanessa Carlton concert from her home in Malibu. She was talking on a borrowed phone, since she doesn't own one herself.
Here are excerpts from that 10 minute phone conversation:
With a battery of photographers snapping pictures, the three members of Jane's Addiction pressed both hands into wet cement as part of their induction into Guitar Center RockWalk in West Hollywood, California. Later, guitarist Dave Navarro remarked to CNN, "I first became aware of hands in cement on 'I Love Lucy,' if you remember that episode where they steal John Wayne's footprints."
Rage Against the Machine's Tom Morello introduced the iconic rock band in a Wednesday ceremony, revealing that he used to sneak into Jane's rehearsals in 1986, "sitting on some nasty carpet in the corner with wide-eyed wonder."
Although many people say Nirvana was the first alternative group to break out of the hair metal '80s, Morello begs to differ. "That's just not true. It was Jane's Addiction," he stated, as a handful of people in the crowd nodded in agreement.
Thursday night, Lil Wayne rocked the mic for 650 lucky fans at a re-boot of "MTV Unplugged," the network's signature series from the 1990s. Hours later, we're still trying to figure out what was "unplugged" about it.
For most of the concert, the hip-hop superstar was backed by an energetic seven-piece band that included a pair of electric guitars and an electric bass. Only two or three songs featured acoustic instruments - including "Nightmares at the Bottom," a song off his upcoming album, "Tha Carter IV."
The taping took place at Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City, California - home of "Wheel of Fortune" and "Jeopardy." Weezy took the stage in a black sweatshirt with the word "WOW" emblazoned on the front. By the end of the set, he had peeled away not only his sweatshirt, but also a white t-shirt and tank. There was a funny bit when he discovered his jeans were unzipped.
"This is the most important show to me since my mom passed," Kanye West revealed, as a hush fell over the capacity crowd on closing night of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.
In the middle of a powerful hits-filled set that also featured cuts off his current album, "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy," the 33-year-old hip-hop superstar suddenly had a confessional moment.
"When I made the album, I was in a really dark place in my life...losing everything that was dear to me," he told the audience from center stage. "To still love me after everything you've seen me say on TV...to still have fans...I really appreciate you all tonight, because I'm only trying to say and do what's right."
A cheer rose from the floor of the polo field as Arcade Fire took the stage at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival - the sound of conquering heroes returning to an event that helped launch them.
"Coachella is really the first festival we ever played, so it has a special place in our heart, and we don't take it for granted," frontman Win Butler told the audience Saturday night.
The Montreal-based indie rock band made their Coachella debut in 2005, just after the release of their acclaimed freshman CD, "Funeral." In 2011, they return as winners of this year's top Grammy prize - "Album of the Year" - for their third disc, "The Suburbs." It's the ultimate indie success story.
In advance of her inaugural run as an “American Idol” judge, Jennifer Lopez is taking on a stylish venture: The 41-year-old actress/singer/designer and her husband, Marc Anthony, announced Thursday that they've teamed up with Kohl’s to debut two fashion lines.
Lopez and Anthony will each launch a clothing and accessories line for Kohl’s department stores in the States. Eventually, the couple said, they’ll lend their style savvy to a home goods line as well.
Lopez’s collection will include sportswear, dresses, handbags, jewelry, shoes and sleepwear, while Anthony’s will offer sportswear, dress shirts, neckwear, accessories, suits, coats and shoes.
The merchandise is expected to hit Kohl’s stores and Kohls.com beginning in the fall of next year.
