Will Donny Osmond win 'DWTS?'

Posted: 11:16 AM ET

Will Donny Osmond pull off an upset tonight on this season’s finale of “Dancing With the Stars?”

It seems possible after an intense evening of competition Monday that ended with the singer receiving his first perfect scores only a week after it looked like he might be kicked off the hit series.

Osmond and his professional dancing partner Kym Johnson and the other two couples left in the show had to dance three routines last night, including two individual numbers and a group “mega mix challenge.”

Kelly Osbourne and her partner Louis Van Amstel first did a kicky, intense Argentine tango. (Those are fun to watch, though whenever I see this tango performed I always feel like the dancers will accidentally kick themselves or each other while doing the flirty leg moves.)

The couple received praise from the judges, though Bruno Tonioli said he wanted more “ripe sensuality.”

Singer Mya and her dancing partner Dmitry Chaplin seemed to solidify their lead after performing a Paso Doble to “We Will Rock You” – a routine that the judges described as flamboyant and amazing and one that received perfect scores.

Osmond and his professional dancing partner Kym Johnson did a nice Cha Cha that earned them three nines. But it was their freestyle dance that had the judges unanimously flashing their “10” paddles. Len Goodman called the Broadway routine an “absolute show stopper,” while Carrie Ann Inaba exclaimed, “Welcome to the hall of fame of the freestyle.”

Mya, on the other hand, disappointed with her “Hairspray” routine, which Inaba called “not outstanding.” Goodman said “it never went anywhere” and Tonioli confessed that he expected something more spectacular.

Osbourne had the crowd on its feet for her freestyle routine set to “I Will Survive,” but the dance seemed to lack some energy and received the lowest score of the three couples.

So, point-wise, Mya is still in the lead, followed by Osmond and Osbourne. But viewer votes could make this a very close one.

Who do you think will win the mirror ball trophy tonight?

Star gets surprise on 'DWTS' elimination

Posted: 10:43 AM ET

“Iron Chef’s” Mark Dacascos and former Dallas Cowboy Michael Irvin didn’t look surprised to be in the bottom three on “Dancing with the Stars” Tuesday night.

Singer Aaron Carter, on the other hand, looked stunned.

Just the day before, he received two perfect scores for an energetic jive that got rave reviews from the judges. Carter, who has been struggling so far in the competition, seemed ecstatic.

Fast-forward to elimination night and the mood was quite different. The singer couldn’t seem to believe that he would either be cut right away or have to fight to stay in the show in a dance off.

Irvin was the first celebrity to be shown the door, which left Carter and Dacascos to battle it out for a spot in the competition.

Dacascos, who was pummeled by the judges on Monday for his samba, performed the cha cha for the dance off, which judge Len Goodman called “top notch.” (Judge Bruno Tonioli expressed his admiration by throwing in a “Hollywood Madam” Heidi Fleiss reference, which left the audience stunned for a moment.)

Carter did another great jive, which tipped the scales in his favor and meant he could stay in the competition - for now.

What did you think of the results?

Judges pummel 'Dancing' star

Posted: 11:20 AM ET

The competition is getting tougher and so are the judges’ comments on “Dancing With the Stars.”

Last night, the biggest zingers were reserved for Mark Dacascos, host of Food Network's "Iron Chef America," who has had a good run on the show until now.

His samba - performed with new dance partner Anna Trebunskaya, filling in for Lacey Schwimmer who was under the weather this week – seemed like a nice, energetic routine but it really didn’t go over well with the judges.

It was like “Kung Fu Panda doing the samba on the ‘Planet of the Apes,’ ” said judge Bruno Tonioli. (Ouch.)

“It was a mess,” added judge Carrie Ann Inaba.

Maybe it was the jarring black and green costumes the couple wore during the routine?

All of the professional dancers sported outfits designed by their celebrity partners on last night’s show, with mixed results. Louis Van Amstel tried to make the best out of the electric blue, fringe-gone-wild pants picked out for him by Kelly Osbourne.

Fringe worked better for Karina Smirnoff, who wore a great pink dress chosen by singer Aaron Carter. But it was their amazing footwork that earned them a couple of perfect scores for their jive.

“That had enough energy to light up Hollywood,” said judge Len Goodman. (Not to take anything away from Carter's routine, but does it seem like the famously cranky Goodman has been told to be more generous with praise? He's been uncharacteristically complimentary of most couples over the last couple of episodes.)

Two celebrities will be eliminated from the competition tonight. Who do you think should go?

Heavy breathing on 'Dancing'

Posted: 02:10 PM ET

Lots of celebrities have mentioned how they’ve lost weight by competing on “Dancing With the Stars,” and it’s easy to see why.

Last night, many of the stars were barely able to catch their breath after dancing the jitterbug, a bouncy, energetic, athletic – and sometimes acrobatic - dance made popular during World War II.

Donny Osmond and his professional partner Kym Johnson did a fun, train-themed jitterbug that had him huffing and puffing afterwards.

Professional snowboarder Louie Vito seemed so out of breath after his routine that he looked like he was going to do what Osmond’s sister Marie did a few season back on “Dancing:” faint during the judges’ comments.

Judge Carrie Ann Inaba also noted that Vito dropped his professional partner Chelsie Hightower twice during their wild jitterbug. “It was all wacko,” added judge Bruno Tonioli.

Meanwhile, Kelly Osbourne did a fun, cute routine with Louis Van Amstel, but didn’t impress the judges, who called her performance “flat footed.”

“It was like a blueberry muffin without the blueberries,” said judge Len Goodman.

He was more complimentary of some of the couples who danced the waltz on last night’s show, giving the thumbs up to celebrities including Melissa Joan Hart and Michael Irvin.

Tonight, the results show features a double elimination. Who do you think should go?

Double elimination on 'Dancing'

Posted: 10:31 AM ET

Tom DeLay isn’t exactly a celebrity outside political circles, but he was probably the most talked-about cast member of this season’s “Dancing With the Stars.”

(As in “Tom DeLay is going to do what?”)

Last night, the former House Majority Leader pulled out of the competition, saying he wouldn’t be able to continue because of painful stress fractures in both of his feet.

But DeLay wasn’t voted out of the show – in fact he wasn’t even in the bottom two and he actually turned out to be a decent dancer.

OK, the strange, strange sight of him gyrating to “Wild Thing” a couple of weeks back was a cringe-worthy moment - and we could have been spared the camera close-up that began that particular dance number - but DeLay seemed to get into the spirit of things.

His tango was quite good, except a stumble at the end which had him wincing in pain. And who else could have danced a politically inspired samba?

Despite DeLay’s decision to leave, the show continued the elimination last night and it turned out to be the end of the competition for actress Debi Mazar and her professional dancing partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy, who were voted off the show. (Not a complete surprise, but it seemed like they might last another episode.)

'Dancing' star tries to make out with judge

Posted: 11:56 AM ET

The celebrities on “Dancing With the Stars” try to do lots of things to stand out from the other couples in the competition, but this might be a first: Trying to make out with a judge.

This unusual maneuver came courtesy of Donny Osmond last night after dancing the rumba.

Earlier in the show, the judges acknowledged the dance is particularly hard for the male celebrities on the show because they have to walk a fine line between conveying romance and appearing too soft on the dance floor.

Judge Bruno Tonioli apparently thought Osmond’s performance was too much of the latter and said it had “a bit of ‘Swan Lake’ ” in it. Which is when Osmond playfully lunged at the judges’ desk and tried to kiss Tonioli.

It took a while for everyone to recover, but the show’s next highlight belonged to former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, who appeared on the verge of pulling out of the competition due to injuries. He revealed he now has stress fractures in both feet and that his doctor and the show’s producers urged him to withdraw.

But not so fast.

“What’s a little pain when you can party?” DeLay said before dancing a decent samba that was favorably reviewed by the judges.

Finally, a surprising standout couple last night was professional snowboarder Louie Vito and his dance partner Chelsie Hightower. Their romantic rumba prompted Tonioli to exclaim, "That's chemistry."

Who do you think will be voted off tonight?

Dancing With The "Stars"? Season 9 cast unveiled

Posted: 11:25 AM ET

Let the DWTS season nine buzz officially begin!  ABC has unveiled the latest cast of "Dancing With The Stars," and no, LaToya Jackson isn't on the list.  While I'll leave it to others to assess each contestant's potential talents at twirling and hoofing, let's check the "star" quality of each new DWTSer:

  • Aaron Carter: a couple of platinum albums, TV, Broadway, Backstreet brother.  Yeah, okay.
  • Ashley Hamilton: son of George Hamilton, married to Shannen Doherty for about 12 minutes.  No.
  • Chuck Liddell: UFC Mixed Martial Arts champ and Hall of Famer.  Great athletes have always been a part of the show's mix (and usually done well), and it'll be interesting to see whether MMA fans tune into DWTS.  Great choice.
  • Debi Mazar: more fun for the Entourage fans on this blog, though I'm old enough to remember her from GoodFellas and L.A. Law.  Not exactly a star, but well-known enough.
  • Donny Osmond: great pick!  Just don't faint.
  • Joanna Krupa: Maxim magazine calls the Polish-born model one of the sexiest women in the world.  Does that make her a star?  No.  Do I care?  No.
  • Kathy Ireland: supermodel turned CEO of a billion-dollar design business... and she was the kicker in Necessary Roughness!  Score!
  • Kelly Osbourne: well, she's a reality TV star, and she'll undoubtedly be entertaining.  Okay.
  • Louie Vito: the snowboarder isn't as well-known as Liddell, but I suppose the same athlete principle applies.
  • Macy Gray: I guess this is part of her latest comeback attempt.  She's a Grammy winner, so sure.
  • Mark Dacascos: he's the host of Iron Chef America and a Kung Fu champ, so he could be an interesting addition - especially if he and Liddell throw down after Chuck makes fun of Mark's Food Network gig.
  • Melissa Joan Hart: she's starred in TV shows and movies, and with two young children, she figures to draw a good chunk of the mom vote.
  • Michael Irvin: talented, egomaniacal athlete who can't keep his mouth shut.  FANTASTIC selection.
  • Mya: multi-talented performer (singing, dancing, acting), plus she also has the one-name thing going for her, which is nice.
  • Natalie Coughlin: yet another athlete, and perhaps the most acclaimed of the bunch - 11 Olympic medals in swimming.  Can she take the DWTS gold like gymnast Shawn Johnson?
  • Tom DeLay: well, he's... wait, what?!?  The former House Majority Leader?  He's not even a star in DC anymore.  Maybe producers told the bookers "get us The Hammer" and they misunderstood.

Okay, start arguing - what do you think of this season's cast?

LaToya Jackson on DWTS?

Posted: 04:39 PM ET

LaToya Jackson is back in the news.  She made headlines this summer when she declared her brother Michael had been murdered; now, she's looking to dance her way into prime time.  Jackson says she's been invited to compete on season nine of "Dancing With The Stars," following in the illustrious shoeprints of Shawn Johnson, Brooke Burke, and Kristi Yamaguchi... not to mention such luminaries as Kim Kardashian, Marie Osmond, and Steve-O.  "She has been invited and she loves the show!" says her publicist, adding that no deal has been made.  All ABC will say is that the season nine DWTS cast will be unveiled on Good Morning America next Monday, August 17.

How about it, DWTS fans - do you want to see LaToya strutting her stuff next season?  And who else should get a shot at dancing his or her way to the title?
