Did 'Idol' winner have unfair advantage?

Posted: 11:07 AM ET

Can it be called "Textgate"?

Some of the "Lambs," as the hardcore Adam Lambert fans are known, are up in arms over reports that "American Idol" winner Kris Allen may have gotten a voting boost courtesy of show sponsor, AT&T.

The New York Times reported that representatives from AT&T provided free phones and lessons on how to "power text" at  two fan parties held in support of  Allen in his home state of Arkansas.

Fans of the show could only text in their votes via AT&T's mobile network, and employees reportedly provided demo phones and taught party attendees how to to send 10 or more text messages  at the press of a single button, which is known as "power texting." The story was first reported in an article in The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.

According to the Times, AT& T released a statement Tuesday. “In Arkansas, we were invited to attend the local watch parties organized by the community," a spokesman for the company said. "A few local employees brought a small number of demo phones with them and provided texting tutorials to those who were interested.”

Lambert fans apparently were not afforded the same opportunity.

Fox has so far declined to comment.

At the finale, "Idol" host Ryan Seacrest did not announce how many votes separated Allen and Lambert. Moreover, there were initial reports of a huge amount of votes coming out of Arkansas.

But was Allen's home state also his swing state? We may never know.

Was the final vote fair? Post your comments below or head over to iReport to share video of your reaction.

Top 2: I'll be the judge of that

Posted: 08:16 PM ET

Ryan said just under 100 million votes came in. Wow!!!

On to the judges, who are all gussied up. Why is Randy wearing a huge red bow tie that matches his red glasses?

I love the retrospective they do on the judges cutting together certain words and phrases they always say. For Randy, it's "For me," for Kara it's "sweetie," and for Paula, it is any crazy thing that comes out of her mouth.

They also make fun of Simon's "What?" Perhaps he can get one of those little hearing amplifiers I see advertised on TV for like $1.25.

But enough about judges. Adam and Kris look so hot in white. They've stationed Mikalah Gordon in Conway, Arkansas, and she tries so hard to get a cute little girl to play along for the camera, but no haps.

Carly Smithson has returned home to San Diego and is surrounded by Lambs.

Here's what I have been waiting for - the first group performance, which is Pink's "So What." Jasmine hits a really ill note. Ouch!

I can imagine the horror in some second-grade class tomorrow when a little kid comes strolling in singing "And you're a tool, so what." Geez!

Top 2: Who can it be now?

Posted: 08:04 PM ET

** SPOILER ALERT: Wednesday night’s blog will eventually reveal the winner of  the show. Do not visit the last entry of the blog if you do not want to know the result. **

I cannot believe that this is it.

After all of the performances, the odd pairings of guests and the night we had Quentin Tarantino for a mentor (still haven't gotten over that one), we have come to the night of champions.

I can honestly say I like both Kris and Adam, so I won't be upset either way.

The swoopy camera work is back, and the guys look great in white.

Good luck, gentleman!

The whole season has been quite a ride for all of the contestants, and Wednesday's finale will be chock-full of special appearances. Among the scheduled guests: Black Eyed Peas, Carlos Santana, Lionel Richie, Queen Latifah, Keith Urban, Cyndi Lauper, and last season's winner, David Cook.

Prime those DVRs for 'Idol'

Posted: 05:17 PM ET

Ryan Seacrest mentioned it a few times on Tuesday night so viewers have no excuse.

Nevertheless: Please, please, please remember to set those DVRs with extra time to catch all of the action of Wednesday night's "American Idol" finale.

Last season, many avid watchers who were unable to catch the show live were treated to Ryan saying, "The winner, by 12 million votes, of 'American Idol' 2008 is David –"

Those who hadn't programmed their DVRs for extended recording were left to wonder if the winner was David Cook or David Archuleta (it was Cook).

This season, fans bemoaned missing Adam Lambert's original performance of "Mad World" when the show went over the allotted time.

So listen to Seacrest, who assured the audience that Wednesday's finale show will definitely go long.

Top 2: I just live for Seacrest's intros

Posted: 08:11 PM ET

The "guy next door versus the guy-liner?"

So clever Ryan.

Kris looks like a munchkin next to Adam, but since Kris won the coin toss, he chooses to go second.

Very smart.

All of the judges look so nice tonight. Very relaxed.

Kris and Adam will sing three songs: their favorite performance from the season, a song show creator Simon Fuller chooses and the winner's single co-written by Kara.

I pray she is a better song writer than she has been a judge.

I second Ryan's emotion to set your recorders tomorrow for the show to go long. Remember last year when some folks saw and heard "And the American Idol is David" then the DVRs cut out? Tragic!!

Shock and awww on 'American Idol'

Posted: 10:38 AM ET

It's one of the most anticipated "American Idol" finale match-ups that now will never be.

Kris Allen

The drumbeat had been pounding for weeks with how it was supposed to go down: Adam Lambert vs. Danny Gokey, the bad boy against the choirboy, to see who took the title.

The almost foregone conclusion was trumpeted in the lead-up to the final two by the judges, fans and bloggers.

But a funny thing happened on the way to the Nokia Theater: America voted for Kris Allen.

He didn't have the theatrics of Adam, whom you either loved or hated (or in keeping with his androgyny, sometimes a little bit of both) or the compelling back story of Danny the widower.

What Kris did have was the magical ability to take a song - the sort of song in which the reading of the title sent groans throughout viewer households of "Why in the world is he performing that?!" - and transform it into not only votes, but a rush to iTunes for downloading.

He did it with Donna Summer's "She Works Hard for the Money," and he most importantly did it with Kanye West's "Heartless" Tuesday, when the race was down to the final three.

When Ryan read the results that announced Kris as the first contestant headed into the finale, the look on his face was one of stunned joy.

When the camera panned to the judges, they appeared to be just as stunned.

But Kris' triumph is what helps make "American Idol" one of the biggest shows on television: anything can happen. The viewers get the final say, not the judges.

Unlike other reality shows where the audience  waits to see  the contestants' next move, "Idol" keeps us tuning in because  "what will they do next" applies as much to the viewers as it does to the performers.

Top 3: Adam Lambert makes them crazy

Posted: 09:51 PM ET

Adam looks like he is mixing jailhouse rock with plain ol' rock with the striped shirt and leather.

Adam Lambert

We learn that some chick in San Diego got naked and streaked on stage.

I love that he does the eyeliner of the weather forecaster at the local news station. She probably never looked so good and maybe makeup artist can be his fall-back plan if this "Idol" thing doesn't work out.

Check him out at the theater where he performed as a child. You could tell by the look on his face that speaking with the kids was touching him and the children looked like they were in heaven.

I want to gobble up the little cherub who asked in his baby voice, "How did you get so good at singing and dancing?" He was adorable!

The multigenerational Lambs are in full effect, and Adam's mommy sheds a tear.

Back to Ryan, who lets us know that Adam can also go sit down. Results already please!!!

Top 3: Kris Allen hits Arkansas

Posted: 09:32 PM ET

I went to Kris' hometown of Conway, Arkansas, when I was driving cross-country, and the folks there were great people.

Kris Allen

It seems like everyone there has turned out to love up on him. Kris' family totally made me cry.

From his dad's tearful exclamation of pride in his boy to his mom, who looked like she was going to lose it any minute before she actually did, it made me all the happier that he has made it this far in the competition.

Back in the studio, there's more recap from Ryan before Kris is sent to sit with Danny. I hate the anticipation, but good luck to them both.
