Harry Connick Jr. has managed to give "American Idol" something the show desperately needed - good buzz - but he hasn't been able to lift the reality singing competition out of its sad ratings slump.
The series returned for its 13th season on Wednesday with 15 million tuning in and a 4.6 rating in the adult demographic - enough to help "Idol" dominate the ratings on Wednesday but still a drop nonetheless. According to EW, Wednesday's episode was the lowest-rated premiere in "Idol's" history.
"American Idol" producers won't have to start from scratch when they staff up for season 13.
Although Randy Jackson, Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj have all departed the "Idol" judges' table, Keith Urban has signed on for another round.
The exodus from "American Idol" isn't over yet.
Executive producer Nigel Lythgoe, who's been with the series since its beginning, has been let go from the program, Lythgoe confirmed on Twitter and in a statement to CNN.
It sounds like "American Idol" is far more interested in sticking with old friends than making new ones.
After rumors that the show wants Jennifer Lopez to return to the judges' table - which is now missing Randy Jackson and potentially might lose more - come new reports that the production team also has its eye on Jennifer Hudson.
Candice Glover could barely remember her own name after she was crowned the new "American Idol" on Thursday.
"I'm still trying to process the whole thing, I don't even know what's happening," she told the press backstage. "It feels amazing though that I finally got to this point; I've been working for so long."
If "American Idol" producers really are planning to toss aside all of the show's judges, as rumors have suggested, they only have three left to go.
On Thursday night, Randy Jackson confirmed that he's departing the long-running reality competition, meaning the show no longer has any of its original judges.
