From 'Thriller' to Snooki: 30 years of MTV

Thirty years ago, a network that's now synonymous with pop culture and providing some of the best entertainment of the century was born.

Although we've lost count of how many jaw-dropping moments and reality TV shows MTV has produced, the network has managed to hold our attention, even though most viewers have gone from anticipating the latest music video to watching what the cast of "Jersey Shore" will do next.

Take a look back through MTV's history, as it's evolved from an authority on what the cool kids are watching to what some would call a highly addictive, albeit perhaps mindless source of entertainment.

Gaga's meat dress headed for Hall of Fame

How can we possibly forget Lady Gaga's meat dress? You know, the one she wore to the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards.

Whether it was flank steak or thinly sliced brisket sewn together, it was, for her, a pretty conservative outfit. Gaga has some racy costumes, and while she showed a lot of flesh in the Franc Fernandez -Nichola Formichetti designed dress, that time it wasn't her own.

The garment received a lot of press, with some praising its originality while others had a beef with it, including PETA who released this statement:

Surprise, surprise: MTV VMAs pulled in huge ratings

Well, what a surprise: MTV’s 2010 Video Music Awards was a ratings bonanza on Sunday night, pulling in the largest audience of any telecast on the network since 2002, according to a press release.

That equates to 11.4 million viewers tuning in to watch the program, which will be in MTV’s history books as the third most-watched show of all time for the network. (Of all time!)

It’s possible that many were tuning in to see how that whole Taylor Swift/Kanye West storyline would end; ratings were up 33 percent from the previous year, when West’s actions at the awards ceremony spawned the "Kanye shrug" and a quote that will probably never be erased from the cultural lexicon.

Cher 'turned back time' at VMAs

It didn't look like Cher needed to turn back time at the VMAs last night.

The 64-year-old singer proudly walked out onto the VMA stage Sunday wearing an outfit nearly identical to the iconic (and revealing) one she donned in her 1989 music video, “If I Could Turn Back Time.” Even her hair was reaching its former heights.

“I’m the oldest chick with the biggest hair and the littlest costume,” she told the audience. “I have shoes older than most of these nominees.”

Cher was on hand to announce the winner of the Video of the Year award, which went to Lady Gaga for “Bad Romance.” Gaga is known for making a statement or two with fashion as well, and accepted her award in a dress made of meat. No, really - Gaga's rep told CNN that the dress was made by House of Gaga out of actual meat.

Critics unimpressed with VMA's Chelsea Handler

Hopefully Chelsea Handler will have a sense of humor when she reads the reviews of her VMA hosting gig.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the comedian and E! talk show host was raked over the coals for her MTV stint, with the New York Times describing her as being "among the worst [hosts] in the show's history."

Though the Times called Handler's "Chelsea Lately" show "consistently hilarious," her VMA appearance was no laughing matter. "Here, she never looked comfortable, undone by nerves, brittle material, and the wattage of those around her," said the newspaper, which critiqued her as being "purposefully out-of-touch, with brief, alarming flashes of off-color racial humor."
