Only a couple days into awards season, and already the curveballs are flying.
On Wednesday, the National Board of Review - the century-old organization of film aficionados, professors and industry professionals - named the Spike Jonze film "Her" as 2013's best picture. The film, which stars Joaquin Phoenix as a man who falls in love with a Siri-like computer system (voiced by Scarlett Johansson), also nabbed Jonze the honor for best director.

Aside from their access to some really great films, we do not envy the judges of the 2013 Gotham Independent Film Awards.
The filmmakers who sat on the juries - and the moviegoers who voted on the audience award - have had to make some incredibly hard decisions.
The 23rd awards ceremony, which was held on Monday night at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City, boasted a number of high-profile nominees, including one of the best films of the year, "12 Years A Slave."

The more things change for Orlando Bloom, the more they seem to stay the same.
The 36-year-old actor has technically moved on from both Middle-earth and his wife Miranda Kerr, but these days he's getting plenty of play with both.

At this point, we're starting to believe Will Ferrell is just a character Ron Burgundy occasionally plays.
With the release of "Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues" looming closer - it's now arriving December 18 - Ferrell has been working overtime as classy newsman Ron Burgundy, selling cars and shilling his personal flavor of Ben & Jerry's ice cream, "Scotchy Scotch Scotch."
But on Saturday, Ferrell's Burgundy did what he does best: deliver the local news.

The new movie options are so plentiful at the box office this weekend, it might be hard to choose just one.
There's the family friendly tale "Frozen," the holiday musical "Black Nativity," a Sylvester Stallone-penned action epic ("Homefront") and a heartwarming story of a woman's enduring love for her son ("Philomena").
