Jon and Kate minus 8

Posted: 06:32 PM ET

Can Jon and Kate be given a grown up time out? Is there such a thing? Can I create it with them in mind?

I know when I was little and I misbehaved I was sent to my room. If I shot my mouth off at my parents I was sent right upstairs into a time out. Why does that stop when we get older? Jon and Kate are shooting their mouths off and you know what? It’s time for them to stop!

Jon is seen in this new clip on TMZ.com reading an email from Kate to the paparazzi. Now you can see from the clip that he is clearly frustrated; he is worried that Kate won’t honor their custody agreement on their twins’ birthday. Here’s the thing though, I shouldn’t know anything about that. It is utterly reprehensible that Jon was standing on a New York City sidewalk and telling absolute strangers about his divorce.

You both seem determined to air every aspect of your dirty laundry to the public. Kate, you claim you don’t have enough money to feed your children—even though at the same time you want to buy a pearl ring with eight diamonds. Jon, you want your kids off TV during your divorce—the one thing I can support you on. But I digress. I have a suggestion for you Jon and Kate—and I think you will both really like it. It would allow you both to keep talking about your crumbling marriage, make money and get your kids off of TV all at the same time. I am pitching you a new reality TV show: “Jon and Kate minus 8”, all about your divorce and custody battle.

I am willing to bet that people would watch, giving you what you seem to so desperately desire—attention. That brings me back to my original point about time outs. Kids are usually put there when they are misbehaving; you know, yelling, screaming, acting out, etc. Sound familiar? It’s time to grow up; if you are going to act like children I am going to treat you that way. Jon and Kate- TIME OUT!

Jon Gosselin tries to shut down "Jon & Kate"!

Posted: 12:52 PM ET

Jon Gosselin has had it, and he isn't going to take it anymore! Jon just sent a cease and desist order to TLC demanding it stop production of the show and leave his property. This comes just two days after TLC announced the show was being renamed “Kate Plus 8” and Jon filed papers halting his divorce proceedings.

Showbiz Tonight just received this statement from TLC:

“We are aware of Jon Gosselin's recent statements, and remain deeply disappointed at his continued erratic behavior. He and the family were shooting as recently as last Friday, without incident, and his latest comments are grossly inaccurate, without merit and are clearly opportunistic. Despite Jon Gosselin's repeated self destructive and unprofessional actions, he remains under an exclusive contract with TLC. Direct filming of the children has been currently suspended, pending further conversations between both parents.”

Jon Gosselin: Ready to rumble

Posted: 06:11 PM ET

Jon Gosselin was on fire with ABC’s Chris Cuomo last night during the Primetime special, “Family Secrets,” and half the time I didn’t know whose side to believe. No, I am not talking about being on Jon or Kate’s side- I am talking about which side of Jon!

Was it me or did anyone else feel like they were watching two completely different people last night? They had two very distinct personalities- I am going to call them JBK and JAK. You will see why below.

JBK- or Jon before Kate launched her media offensive against him: I saw JBK as a loving, caring father. I wanted to cry when he talked about looking at old pictures of his twins and wondering if maybe he should have hugged and kissed them more. His face actually lit up when speaking about each of his kids; describing their personalities for Chris. I believe that his love for them is genuine. We all watched him care for those children while Kate was away on her book tours and making public appearances- there is no question that he is a devoted father that is worried about how this is affecting them.

Which brings us to the second Jon- because for a guy who is so concerned about his children’s well being, how in the world could he go on television and say some of the things that he said?

JAK- or Jon after Kate's years of verbal abuse. Look, Jon, I get it, you had it rough. She cut you off from your family; she lambasted you in public; she emasculated you in front of America. Enough is enough, it was time for the marriage to be over, clearly it was for the best. Obviously, judging by the vitriol you exhibited in that interview, being married to Kate would NOT HAVE BEEN in the best interest of the children so good for you for getting out. But Jon, Jon, Jon… she is the mother of your EIGHT children. Be careful what you say. I would not go on national television and say things like “I despise that woman” and “I love Hailey more than I ever loved Kate”; that just isn’t right in my book.

I am a little confused over who to cheer for. I have lost sight of who the real Jon Gosselin is- I am not sure that even he knows anymore. So please, will the real Jon please stand up?

Jon and Kate: Time to stop!

Posted: 05:44 PM ET

I feel like a broken record. Every time I write a Jon and Kate blog I say the same clichéd things: Are you kidding me?! Seriously?! You have GOT to be kidding me!! But really Jon and Kate, you are putting me in this position. You are stifling my literary creativity. You just don’t stop! And when you don’t stop, you make me a little hot under the collar and I feel the need to vent my frustrations to my Marquee Blog peers and tell them how I feel and then read their responses and see how they feel- and I do read every one!

Kate went on Larry King Live last night to talk about her and Jon’s divorce. She dodged a lot of the questions that Larry asked her claiming they were things that she didn’t want her kids to have to hear about in the press. Kate, I have a question for you: why do these interviews at all? I know you have contractual press obligations to TLC but I have to believe that they would let you out of those due to these extenuating circumstances. So what gives? Do you really need the attention? I only ask because you are also on the cover of the new issue of People magazine talking about your divorce- or rather, talking around your divorce.

Ok Jon, now it’s your turn. Stop talking to the paparazzi. Walking outside of your front door and chatting it up with the constant stream of onlookers at your front gate doesn’t help the situation. First of all, aren’t you supposed to be inside watching your 8 kids? Secondly, these people are not your friends and confidantes, they are tabloid reporters. They make their money, their livelihoods, off of you; they aren’t there to schmooze.

Jon and Kate, listen closely please. Stop waging a publicity war in front of America. You may think that by not saying hurtful things about each other you are sparing your children hurt down the line but in a way this is worse. Just stop.

Jon and Kate: Going through the motions

Posted: 05:59 PM ET

I was a little distracted during Jon & Kate Plus 8 last night.  No, the phone wasn’t ringing incessantly; nor was my Blackberry vibrating with e-mails. It was something else, and it took me a little while to realize what it was. It wasn’t the fact that the couch was gone; but it was something about the new interview set up. Then it finally hit me; there, perfectly framed over Kate’s shoulder in the bookcase was her book, “Eight Little Faces." Can you say “product placement” people?

It’s as if the producers had a checklist of what they wanted to accomplish and sat with their trusty little clipboard with an editor as they went through the show checking things off of their lists.

  • Address the fact that they started filming the kitchen remodel in January, before the divorce announcement to avoid any confusion to viewers. Check.
  • Have Jon be around a little bit for the first episode to satisfy viewers who are “Team Jon." Check.
  • Address the paparazzi that constantly follow the family around. Check.
  • Include cute children saying how their daddy would know how to build a tent if he were there and how mommy can’t make a fire. Check.

Truthfully, it was tiring to watch. If I hadn’t been watching for work purposes I probably would have changed the channel.

What did you think? Will you be tuning in again next week?

"Jon & Kate" return tonight

Posted: 05:44 PM ET

It’s been a few weeks since we have gotten to spend some “TLC” time with the Gosselins.

I just got back from a weeklong vacation and I couldn’t pick up a magazine, newspaper or turn on a morning talk show without being met with some update on Jon’s love life – and there were a few.

The promos for tonight’s show have Kate attempting to put together a tent by herself so that she can take her kids camping. Very respectable, and I am sure it will be very cute, but I have got to tell you, if this is what’s being offered up as new episodes, I’m not biting.

Personally, I am more interested in seeing how “Jon & Kate” address the constant throng of paparazzi outside their gates. How do you explain to a 5 year old why there are people standing outside of his house screaming at his parents and snapping pictures?  I know that these kids grew up with video cameras, but they are not used to paparazzi who often shout things to get a reaction from their subjects.

I want to see how Jon and Kate are helping their kids deal with this from the inside – give us a glimpse of that.  Plus, give us some reassurance that those eight adorable children of yours are unfazed by all of this.  I’m not a psychic, but I would say if you can do all this, “Jon & Kate Plus 8” will pull in big ratings.

What do you think? Will you be watching tonight?

Jon Gosselin: Are you kidding me?

Posted: 02:43 PM ET

If you’ve been a regular reader of this blog then you know that over the past few months I’ve stood firmly in the “Team Jon” column in the battle between Jon and Kate Gosselin. He still seemed like the loving, caring dad that he had always been, and I believed him- hook, line and sinker when he looked into the camera and said he never cheated on his wife.  I really thought that maybe he just wasn’t the brightest guy and got caught in the wrong place at the wrong time.  Look, I live in Hollywood, I see the way the paparazzi work, and I see the way pictures can sometimes be taken out of context.  I also thought that there was no way he would be stupid enough to cheat with camera crews following him around all the time. He really had me going; at least until I saw the pictures of him walking hand in hand with his new girlfriend in St. Tropez this weekend.

Really Jon-are you kidding me?! This isn’t even the woman you were being accused of cheating with to begin with- this is a new girl!  And to add insult to what I am sure is a great injury to your entire family, she is the daughter of Kate’s plastic surgeon; seriously?!

Jon, you really let me down; I believed you. I am not saying that you can’t have a girlfriend; you are legally separated, you are allowed to date.  Here’s the thing though. Like it or not you are a public figure now, you will never be a private citizen again.  For better or worse you are a celebrity and have paparazzi following you everywhere. You have 8 children- remember them?  They will grow up and use the Internet and see these pictures. It’s called tact, Jon. Use some.

Jon Gosselin fights back!

Posted: 05:39 PM ET

Is this a sign of things to come between Jon and Kate?  While the two may not be communicating on camera, they certainly seem to be doing so in the press.  Jon re-released his prior statement to Showbiz Tonight, this time adding:

“Also, to be honest, I was hurt by the statement Kate made last night about the divorce.  I have always done everything I can to protect our family.  This weekend, I was home with the kids for four days, just being a dad.  No nannies, just the kids and me.  In fact, with the exception of Aaden’s visit to the doctor, I couldn’t have imagined a better way to spend Fathers Day weekend.  The one thing I do agree with in Kate’s statement is her desire to resolve things amicably.  Of course emotions are running high for both of us right now, but for the sake of our children and our family’s privacy, I hope that we can both limit our public comments about the legal proceedings going forward.”

It sounds like Jon was trying to set the record straight while asking for privacy at the same time. Do you think that will work? This all comes on the same day that Kate appears on the new cover of PEOPLE magazine with her side of the story.  Just how nasty will this divorce get?

Production halts on 'Jon and Kate'

Posted: 06:21 PM ET

TLC is temporarily shutting down production on Jon and Kate plus Eight in order to let the family have some time to deal with their current situation.  A spokesman for TLC told Showbiz Tonight:

“TLC continues to support the Gosselin family and will work closely with them to determine the best way to continue to tell their story as they navigate through this difficult time. Following a retrospective of Jon and Kate's first 10 years airing on June 29th, the show will be on hiatus until August 3rd. During this time the family will take some time off to regroup and then a modified schedule will be in place to support the family's transition.”

Is this too little too late? Should TLC have pulled the plug on the show sooner? What do you think?

With 'Jon & Kate' can the show go on?

Posted: 11:30 AM ET

After announcing that they are splitting up, both Jon and Kate Gosselin said they will continue their reality series, “Jon & Kate Plus 8” - albeit separately.

But can such a show succeed?

The appeal of the series had been watching the couple grapple with the trials of raising twins and a set of multiples. Now, with the pair planning to film her with the kids and him with the kids, will interest dwindle?

On HLN's “Showbiz Tonight,” investigative journalist Pat Lalama told host A.J. Hammer after the announcement that she believed the show might actually benefit from the breakup. “Come on, A.J., we all know this guarantees seven more seasons,” she said. “We’ve got the custody battle. We’ve got Jon’s visitation on the weekends. We’ve got Kate’s first date and the kids meet the guy. We’ve got all kinds of stuff going on here.”

Sasha Pasulka, head writer and founder of the site Evil Beet Gossip, has been following the show and said it  has taken a huge hit in the ratings since its premiere.

Pasulka predicts that decline will continue and theorizes the big announcement episode was a way to try and revive the ratings. "I expect the 'Jon & Kate' viewership will continue to plummet, and TLC will have to wait until Kate takes up with a much-younger lover to finagle another quick ratings boost," she said.

Variety reported that TLC has ordered 40 shows for the fifth season. That’s a great deal of air time to fill with parents who are going through a divorce and seem to be struggling with communicating.

Will you be watching?
