What makes a top musical tribute? With barely a day to prepare, the Recording Academy pulled off a heartfelt and meaningful tribute to honor Whitney Houston’s legacy at the Grammy Awards on Sunday. Music industry insiders say that short notice might have been a blessing in disguise. When a tribute performance is packed with effects and as many celebrities as possible, it becomes a little schmaltzy, said Lyndsey Parker, the managing editor of Yahoo! Music. Jennifer Hudson singing “I Will Always Love You,” with a single spotlight shining down on her, was tasteful and embodied what Houston was all about, Parker added. Adele: Five years off? More like five daysAdele mentioned in the March issue of Vogue that she wants to take "four or five years" off, but the singer seems to have amended that to five days. In a bubbly blog post on her site - titled "5 was my favourite number but now it's 6" - the 23-year-old relishes her six wins at the Grammys on Sunday. "I'm absolutely flabbergasted! In between laughing my head off, welling up, needing to sit down and trying to maintain an open fire...I keep having flashbacks to Sunday night," she writes. "The most incredible night of my life." Grammys watched by largest audience since 1984The Grammy Awards managed to pull off a celebration of both the living and the dead during Sunday's show, and in return they had the highest rated ceremony in nearly three decades. According to a statement from the Recording Academy, more than 39 million viewers tuned in to see how the show would treat the passing of Whitney Houston, how Adele would perform in her first performance since throat surgery, and, of course, who would win what in the big categories. Although it could be said that we pretty much already knew the answer to that question, because Adele picked up all six awards she was nominated for, as expected. Bon Iver, or Bonnie Bear? The Internet's not sureFor the second year in a row, Grammy viewers were left scratching their heads at the Recording Academy's best new artist pick. For some, it was a question of who's more deserving, but for others it's also because they hadn't heard of the artist. Bon Iver appears to be just as confounding as last year's best new artist winner Esperanza Spalding - or the album of the year winner Arcade Fire - as a number of inquiring viewers turned to the Web to try and figure out the identity of the best new artist Grammy holder. The only problem is that some of those heard Bon Iver as Bonnie Bear (or Bonny Bear, Bonny Beer, Barney Bear, or Bony Bear - you get the picture). Catholic League: Is Nicki Minaj possessed? As promised, Nicki Minaj's performance at Sunday's Grammy Awards did offer plenty to talk about, and it's also riled the Catholic League. The rapper/singer turned in a performance riddled with nods to religion, from her stroll down the red carpet accompanied by a pope lookalike, to the confession that opened her performance, to the "exorcism" of her alter-ego, Roman, in a pre-taped skit. While performing her single "Roman Holiday," Minaj was surrounded by choir boys and monks (who could also bust a few moves) and eventually began to levitate high above the stage. Does Brand have anything to do with Katy Perry's Grammys song?Katy Perry's "Part of Me" performance was in good company at Sunday's Grammys, as she wasn't the only one singing of broken hearts and relationships gone wrong. Adele, the current queen of lovelorn pop songs, also took the stage to croon about getting played to the beat after handing her heart over to a paramour. It's possible that Perry's fiery performance of her new single was just keeping in line with that theme, or perhaps she was singing generally of the emotions one has after a break-up. Or, as some have questioned, maybe those lyrics were inspired by recent events in her personal life. The 54th Grammy Awards: The winners listRecord of the year: "Rolling in the Deep," Adele Album of the year: "21," Adele Song of the year: "Rolling in the Deep," Adele Adkins and Paul Epworth, songwriters (Adele) Best new artist: Bon Iver 54th annual Grammy Awards: Live blogIn comparison to Lady Gaga's egg arrival at last year's show, this year's Grammy Awards feel like they're going to be much more tame. Whitney Houston's shocking death has created a modest tone for this year's Grammy Awards, but the show must go on - and it'll include a tribute to the legend, as well. Jennifer Hudson is expected to perform, as well as Chris Brown, Rihanna, Foo Fighters, Katy Perry, and The Beach Boys. Have you tuned in to CBS? Stick around and watch the show with us. Grammys take on somber mood in light of Houston's deathAs the Recording Academy gets ready for the 54th Grammy Awards to kick off at 8 p.m., a more somber mood lingers on the red carpet. Among the many notable names that the music industry has lost in the past year, Whitney Houston is the latest to join the list. Executive producer Ken Ehrlich said Saturday that they were retooling the show to include a respectful tribute to the legendary entertainer, with aid from Jennifer Hudson. On Sunday's red carpet, everyone acknowledged that this is a night to honor the best in the industry, especially those who are no longer with us. Mike Love: Beach Boys ready to head out on tourThe Beach Boys are back together again at the Grammy Awards for their first live performance in more than 20 years, and Mike Love told CNN that they're going to keep the good vibes going with a tour. "It’s our 50th anniversary. Our first performance was New Year's Eve, 1961, [and] our first album came out in 1962 on Capitol Records," Love recalled. "They were kind enough to offer us a new deal, so we’re working on a new album and we’re going on tour together. Fifty years is a remarkable milestone." The Beach Boys will be joined during their Grammys set by Foster the People, who will perform "Wouldn't it Be Nice," and Maroon 5, who will take on "Surfer Girl." "It’s remarkable to see Foster the People and Maroon 5 doing our songs, and saying, 'I was singing this song in the car when I was five,'" Love said. "It’s fantastic. And then we do 'Good Vibrations.' [The performance], it’ll be fun, fun, fun." |
