Singer Jewel opens up on past hunger, homelessness

Before rising to international fame, singer/songwriter Jewel faced some tough times.

The 37-year-old mom says she experienced both homelessness and hunger, and is grateful to those who saw something in her when she couldn't see it for herself.

"It was really hard for me to ever think that I was special when I was homeless," she told CNN in a recent interview. "I was writing things, I was writing songs, but I didn't think that they were that good. The fact that someone believed in me or thought that my life was special meant a lot to me, because I didn't know how to value it.”

Adam Sandler's 'Jack and Jill' sets Razzies record

Adam Sandler's 'Jack and Jill' sets Razzies record

As predicted, it was a clean sweep for comedian/actor Adam Sandler this weekend at the Razzie awards.

For the first time in the show’s 32-year history, one film won in every single category in “honor” of the worst filmmaking of the year. That one film was none other than Sandler’s comedy “Jack and Jill," which snagged all 10 awards.

If landing worst picture, worst actor, worst actress (the actor played his own sister in the flick) and worst screenplay for 2011 weren’t enough, the entire cast of the film got a Golden Raspberry, too.

Jimmy Kimmel to host 64th Primetime Emmys

ABC is keeping it in the family for this year's 64th Primetime Emmys, as the network's extended the hosting gig to Jimmy Kimmel.

Although Kimmel's a veteran of the late night circuit with his ABC show and is no stranger to hosting awards ceremonies - he's been on deck for programs like the American Music Awards and the ESPYs - this will be his first time holding the reins on the Emmys.

Don Mischer is back to executive produce the show for the 12th time (yep, that's a record).

'Descendants' director talks career, next film

Alexander Payne's "The Descendants" was one of the most-talked about films of the past awards season, and it indeed led to accolades for the director.

Adapted from the book of the same name, "The Descendants," now available on DVD and Blu-ray, was nominated for a total of five Academy Awards and won for best adapted screenplay, which Payne co-wrote with Nat Faxon and Jim Rash.

Starring George Clooney as Matt King, "The Descendants" follows the  self-described "backup parent" after his wife's boating accident near their Hawaiian home leaves her in a coma.

Praise pours in for Viola Davis' natural 'do

It's no surprise that Viola Davis made an impressive stroll down the red carpet at Sunday's Oscars, as we've come to expect nothing less from the acclaimed actress - but she did manage to upend a few expectations with her hairstyle.

Rather than rock a wig, Davis showed off her natural, close-cropped hair, dyed a fierce flavor of red to add a little more spark to the chic cut she displayed on the cover of the Los Angeles Times magazine.

The curly Afro was a notable difference, and the praise quickly poured in:

CNN goes inside the Oscars

We're accustomed to covering the events, but attending them as spectators is a wholly different thing.

And then, a  couple of weeks ago, a funny thing happened: Through an odd set of circumstances, we just happened to receive two unassigned tickets to the Academy Awards (not to mention the Governor's Ball!).

This turn of events didn't exempt us from pre-awards show work, but it did give us insight into the way the show runs from a different point of view:

Adam Sandler could clean up at the Razzie Awards

Sunday night might have belonged to “The Artist,” but Saturday night was all about Adam Sandler.

On the eve of the 84th Academy Awards, Sandler earned a total of 11 Razzie nominations, which honor the worst achievements in film.

The funnyman received Razzie Award nominations for his work on three 2011 flicks, according to the Los Angeles Times: “Just Go With It,” “Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star” and “Jack and Jill.”

In a post 'Oprah' show world, why not a fight club?

Times have changed for Oprah Winfrey: Her long-running talk show is off daytime TV, she's heading up her own network - and she's trying to avoid tweeting to viewers with Nielsen boxes in the process.

To aid in her transition, Jimmy Kimmel offered a few new show ideas for her OWN network on his post-Oscars show last night - and some of those ideas really held some promise.

Exhibit A: Oprah's Book Club Fight Club!
