The song that helped Lea Michele after Monteith's death

It's no coincidence that "Cannonball," Lea Michele's first single from her solo album, "Louder," begins with the word "breakdown."

As the "Glee" star tells MTV, it's a song that helped her to cope in the aftermath of her boyfriend and co-star Cory Monteith's death this summer.

Initially, Michele didn't even plan to have the song be a part of the album, which she'd actually wrapped back in June.

But after Monteith died at 31 in July, Michele put her album on hold and took a moment to think if there was anything else she needed to get off her chest. Working with songwriters Sia and Benny Blanco, who co-wrote "Cannonball," that single became a mantra of survival.

A cursory listen will explain why, as the lyrics tell the story of rising from adversity and finding a new beginning.

"I was scared to death I was losing my mind, I couldn’t close my eyes I was pacing all night," Michele sings on the track. "I couldn’t find the truth I was going under ... But I won’t hide inside, I gotta get out, gotta get out ... I will start living today. Today, today I close the door. I got this new beginning and I will fly. I’ll fly like a cannonball."

"The minute I heard the song, I had a physical reaction to it. For me, it's been my strength," Michele told MTV in an interview. "I listen to it every day. I know it was brought into my life for a reason. It's really been so helpful for me and I hope it's the same for other people as it's been for me."

"Cannonball" and another song, "If You Say So," are the only two songs that Monteith never got a chance to hear.

"Cory had heard every song from the album," Michele said. "I just felt that 'Cannonball' was the perfect first song for people to hear from this record. It just really explains where I am right now and it's been such an inspirational song for me. It's been such a rock, such a source of strength for me."

Michele's "Louder" is slated to arrive on March 4, 2014.

Typical of her type, using the death of a "friend" to flog her album. "And, tee hee, I just KNEW I had to pose nude on the cover, it makes such a statement!"

I’m glad that she is so open about how much this song is a part of her. I think that in today’s society it is very hard for a singer to have a song that they have an emotional attachment to. The fact that she has used this song to help cope with her grief is inspirational. The song itself is inspirational and has a very positive message of hope, which you don’t here every day on the radio.
