Trailer Park: Chris Pine as 'Jack Ryan'

Chris Pine is doing his part to keep the Tom Clancy legacy alive.

The "Star Trek" actor is the latest to step into the role of Clancy's character, Jack Ryan, for December's "Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit."

But this installment, directed by Kenneth Branagh, isn't based on a Clancy novel - instead, it's an original story that features versions of the prolific author's famous characters.

In "Shadow Recruit," Jack Ryan goes from being an anonymous CIA analyst to operational when he uncovers what he thinks is a Russian plot to send the U.S. economy into a tailspin.

As the new trailer shows, "Shadow Recruit" will send Jack Ryan - and his fiancée, Cathy (Keira Knightley) - over to Moscow under the guidance of handler William Harper (Kevin Costner, who easily delivers the best lines of the clip.)

Here's the official synopsis from Paramount:

"The story follows him from 9/11, through his tour of duty in Afghanistan, which scarred him forever, and into his early days in the Financial Intelligence Unit of the modern CIA where he becomes an analyst, under the guardianship of his handler, Harper (Kevin Costner). When Ryan believes he's uncovered a Russian plot to collapse the United States economy, he goes from being an analyst to becoming a spy and must fight to save his own life and those of countless others, while also trying to protect the thing that's more important to him than anything, his relationship with his fiancée Cathy (Keira Knightley)."

"Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit" opens December 25. What do you think of the trailer?

Pine? Affleck? No! Does no one remember Harrison Ford? There can be only one!

I love Chris Pine as Jack Ryan. He can do anything and make it look effortless. I loved Ben Affleck but Chris brings an intensity to the role that I don't think Affleck ever did. Ready to see it this December.

Then again, maybe it should be the Chinese and the Russians. That sounds a lot more plausible.

It will only be good if they stick closely to Clancy's character build and story style. Just adding a bunch of CGI will not make it better if the story sucks.

The Russian plot involves standing back and watching as the bankers and then the tea party take alternate whacks at what is the pinata of the American economy.

Those of you who are old enough will remember 1969 and Woodstock, a 3 day gathering of some of the best musical talent of that generation. 2014 promises to bring us Baggerstock, a gathering of some of the biggest @ssholes of this generation. Ted Nugent will play the guitar and Sarah Palin will play skin flutes. Promoters are scouting the deep south at this very moment, looking for a trailer park big enough to hold the event.

  16. no!

Chris Pine is about as qualified to play Jack Ryan as is Don Knotts. Will be skipping it and any sequels, which will invariably flop.

    • Negative Nellie No!

Where do negative sour pusses like you come from? And no one cares that you're going to make a pathetic statement by not seeing this. Millions will... and likely really enjoy it. Now go back to your Ghost Recon game, fantasizing you're some sort of hero.

Why do you think you're qualified to rate the qualifications of who does or doesn't play Jack Ryan? And, usually the presence of sequels indicates some level of success along the way. Though perhaps you are qualified to redefine "success" too.
