AMC's 'The Walking Dead' gets a spinoff

AMC's ratings monster "The Walking Dead" has spawned a new series.

The spinoff-happy network announced on Monday that its in the early stages of developing a "companion series" for its zombie-filled primetime drama.

According to a statement, the new series will be executive produced by "Walking Dead" creator Robert Kirkman as well as current EPs Gale Anne Hurd and David Alpert.

“We look forward to working with Robert, Gale and Dave again as we develop an entirely new story and cast of characters," AMC's President and General Manager, Charlie Collier, said in the statement. "It’s a big world and we can’t wait to give fans another unforgettable view of the zombie apocalypse.”

Kirkman hints that while this new series will be set in the same world as the current "Walking Dead" drama, it'll have a greater sense of storytelling freedom.

"I couldn't be more thrilled about getting the chance to create a new corner of 'The Walking Dead' universe,” he said. “The opportunity to make a show that isn't tethered by the events of the comic book, and is truly a blank page, has set my creativity racing.”

The "Walking Dead" spinoff is aiming for a 2015 debut. In the meantime, the fourth season of "The Walking Dead" begins October 13 on AMC.

Sky, clearly you don't understand the difference between the words 'Fact' and 'Opinion'.

Also, I'm slightly curious as to what you define as a 'devil', since the complete heavy handedness of your statement leads me to assume that you find all religions other than your own narrow belief system as either flawed or 'evil'.

What gets my attention is the large number of devil, witch, murder and, in general, evil and violent films cranked out on TV. Any wonder we have increasing mass murder events only to be accepted [as in China] as done by a derranged person. When in fact, he/she has been taught how to carry out their deed by the media or a "religion."

I've always wondered what became of the couple in the Walking Dead Webisode "Cold Storage"... they leave in a van, low on fuel, and uncertain of their future. I'd love to see this spin-off version follow their journey.
Maybe in a few seasons time, you'd see the two worlds overlap for an episode or two throughout... like they've done with the CSI spin-offs. Maybe the radio broadcast the prison group hears in Season 4 is this group?!

Walking Dead: Detroit. They'd save a ton of money on set decoration and VFX since the city already looks like apocalypse happened there. It'd also be a nice change of pace from Atlanta. I want to see zombies in the snow!

    • M.A.P.

So instead of hiring extras to play zombies they could just film homeless people scrounging around for scraps! Blurr the lens a little and tada! Zombies!

      September 17, 2013 at 11:52 am | Report abuse |
    • Chaws

Well, the people of Detroit could certainly use the work and it wouldn't hurt tourism. Senoia GA is now the 3rd most visited city in the state behind Atlanta and Savannah because of Walking Dead filming there. Detroit also give amazing tax breaks to productions so it would be a cost saver all around to film there.

So this idea is tangable and could really work! Well I hope the producers are reading this! TWD Detroit has a good ring to it too!

How about from the zombie perspective for an episode? A victim, chased, attacked, suffers, dies, reanimates, but has that "spark that remains" and realizes it too is dying inside......

OMG great idea! I can just imagine how creepy it would be to see through the zombie eyes and all you hear is that horrible moaning sound they make. Horror films are always good when they show the view through the killer. Think Halloween's opening scene, or Jaws. I hope they read this!

Yes, we need an American version. Kind of like we needed a remake of Karate Kid...and Annie...and Total Recall. Because we have no original thoughts in Hollywood anymore, so they just remake everything and ruin it. And instead of having a straight white lead actor...lets make it a gay black lesbian, because we want everyone to feel wanted.

@rick – are you really that big of a Jebus nutjob as to rag on The Walking Dead? We already have a Christian version of a zombie with Pat Robertson....so you should be familiar with the zombie concept as much as anyone....and you seemingly approve of that. That you are so blind to think yours is the only possible religion or way shows the reason why religions should be banished.

@gregingso actually Rick is not defending Jesus, because God don't need anyone to defend him, Rick is concern about the big spiritual mistake people are making writing bad things, all people is gonna give an account to Him "Jesus" in the judgement day...just be very careful when you write about God, he loves you and he don't wants you to die in your sins
