In what's probably more calculated than just a bout of good timing, the theatrical trailer for "Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom" has arrived to coincide with Nelson Mandela's 95th birthday on Thursday.
A teaser for the biopic was released last week, but it didn't hint at how vibrant and powerful the full trailer would be.
In two-and-a-half minutes, the "Mandela" clip offers glimpses into the life and work of the iconic South African freedom fighter, with K'Naan's "Wavin' Flag" serving as a soundtrack.
Idris Elba steps into character as a young Mandela, and takes us from an initial meeting with the leader's eventual wife, Winnie (Naomie Harris), to his imprisonment for fighting back against a system of oppression.
Directed by Justin Chadwick ("The Other Boleyn Girl"; "The First Grader"), the film is supposed to stretch across Mandela's life in full, beginning with his experience as a child living in a rural village, and winding down with his release from prison and subsequent election to become the first black president of South Africa.
"Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom" is scheduled to arrive in select theaters in the U.S. on November 29.
