By most accounts, Cory Monteith was as beloved in real life as his character in "Glee" was on screen.
But the actor made it clear in an interview last year with Parade magazine that he was not Finn Hudson, and revealed that he had a dark past which included a struggle with substance abuse.
“I was done fighting myself,” Monteith told Parade of his decision as a teen to turn his life around. “I finally said, ‘I’m gonna start looking at my life and figure out why I’m doing this.’”
"I think there is a part of like fame, when it happens, it's unusual for the human experience that when it happened so late in my life that I really started to prepare myself for the absence of that fame. This is all fleeting. This is rarefied air. It's all going to change." – EW, January 2013
On breaking into acting
"I was dirt-poor. I could barely hold down a job. Eventually, though, I started getting small parts on shows like Smallville, Supernatural . . . and lots of really bad sci-fi movies. I was running around the woods in wolf contacts, covered in fake blood made out of pancake syrup, roaring." – Teen Vogue, December 2010
On first meeting costar and real life girlfriend, Lea Michele
“I heard about this Lea Michele Sarfati, so I went on YouTube and looked at all these videos of you performing on stage, and when I met (her), I was nervous. She just kind of had a different energy than everyone else there.” – WetPaint, April 2013
On his work
You just put your head down and do what you’ve got to do. Whether it’s signing CD’s or doing interviews, which is really all we’re really doing. Whether it’s for a million people or two, I’m just doing concentrating on doing the job at any given moment. – The TV Addict, November 2009
On the success of "Glee"
"It always blows my mind to think about how it was just a FOX pilot that started so humbly a couple of years ago and then winning all these awards and stuff..." GoldDerby, June 2012
On his recent struggle
"It's all about perseverance. Absolute perseverance. You can always get back up."- Glamour, June 2013
