With the accolades and box office revenue 2011's "Bridesmaids" raked in, we'd be hesitant to do a follow-up, too.
How could a sequel top a movie that still hasn't lived down its own success? Just this weekend, the zeitgeist reminisced about the highly rated comedy filled with foul-mouthed ladies as director Paul Feig's latest R-rated effort, "The Heat," landed in theaters.
So when Kristen Wiig, who co-wrote "Bridesmaids" in addition to starring in the vehicle, was thrown the opportunity to do a "Bridesmaids 2," she turned down the offer without batting an eye.
"It wasn't a hard decision," Wiig told Harper's Bazaar. "We knew during the first one, this was it. We would have made a lot of money if there was a second one, but that's not my goal in my creative life."
Instead, her goal is apparently to stay as busy as possible. In addition to doing voicework with Steve Carell in this week's animated family comedy, "Despicable Me 2," she'll also appear in another comedy called "Girl Most Likely" on July 19.
And that's not to mention the three other projects she's signed up for that are listed to arrive this year, not including the "Anchorman" sequel in December.
"I am so excited about that," Wiig told Harper's Bazaar of "Anchorman: The Legend Continues." "I don't know why this is happening to me."
check outside machine for that one-just curious
While I often laughed during the movie and really appreciated the main friendship in the film I am sooooo glad they turned down a sequel. I'm so sick of sequels! Yes, I laughed at this one but if they had done more they would have run into the horror of something like The Hangover 3...when the second never should have been made. The first movie was barely funny...the subsequent films a serious waste of money to make. Hollywood needs to concentrate on new and original, not riding the backs of movies that premiered well.
I thought the first move was HORRIBLE. Didn't think it was funny at all. The movie had the most uncomfortable scenes ever – that you just hoped would end. I bought the DVD without watching it – BIG mistake.
OMG! I thought I was the only one who thought that movie was totally unfunny, vulgar, and generally horrid! Thank GOD there won't be a second such movie perpetrated on the public.
It was one of the WORST movies I've ever seen...
My underpants have reached their poop load carrying limit.
Here's an idea. Not every movie NEEDS a sequel.
Awww, they saw what happened with Hangover 2.
You are all stupid. Chicks are nowhere near as funny as guys. This movie sucked, and they knew it. That's why they didn't bother with a sequel.
I believe the correct term is "she-quel" Triumph.
Your post makes NO sense whatsoever, comedy is not gender specific. We are supposed to take you seriously because????
I credit the "Joe Schmo" show with making Wiig's career. It was huge!
I'd use my loofah and falafel on her wearing my factor gear
I didn't think the first movie was as funny as it was hyped up to be. Female hangover? I think not. But I did enjoy the movie. I would have patronized a sequel. Kristen or Melissa McCarthy's character could have gotten married.
DON'T PATRONIZE ME!!!
I guess you're not able to get married then M.A.P?
you don't know the 1/2 of it.
No you rude fck! I can't get married 'cause ima F.A.G. I'm thinner than you could ever wish to be you slob.
The first one SUCKED so wouldn't be open to a sequel. The only reason the first one did so well is because it looked funny on the preview so by the time you purchase the ticket, it's too late. One and done is the smart way to go
No Rebecca. A lot of people did find it to be a funny movie. Check out rottentomatoes.com if you don't believe me (90% rating with critics and 76% with audience). I'm glad this movie didn't go the way of Hangover, which got increasingly less funny with each sequel.
Oh sure, Rebecca. What about the wedding dress trying on scene where they get food poinsoning? That wasn't funny? You try writing something funnier than that and I'll sh!t out a golden nugget for you.
Rebecca – would you enjoy me sticking it to you from the back!!??
I thought Bridesmaids was one of the funniest movies I've seen. On the other hand, I went to see Hangover in the theater (full price, and everything) and walked out of it 30 minutes in because I thought it was horrible and completely unfunny. Different brands of comedy, I guess.
I think this makes me like her even more as money isn't what she's all about.
This makes me hate her even more. I enjoyed Bridesmaids and enjoyed her on SNL and in her other movies. But she doesn't make high art. Stop acting like you are Meryl Streep. You do ccomedy. If you don't like sequels then be creative in how you write it and don't use Hangover 2 as your model.
You are not an idiot Tappy, I agree. She should not get ahead of herself – she's funny, not the funniest chick ever, but she's funny enough to have a career. She should be thankful and not be acting like she's some complex artist. They are mostly just more of the "being a woman is tough" jokes. I loved Bridesmaides tho.
