The tragedy that occurred at Sandy Hook Elementary in December has left its mark on Jim Carrey.
The 51-year-old actor has said that in light of that event and those like it, he can't stand behind the violence in his upcoming movie, "Kick-Ass 2."
"I did Kickass a month b4 Sandy Hook and now in all good conscience I cannot support that level of violence," Carrey tweeted on Sunday. "(M)y apologies to others involve(d) with the film."
Directed by Jeff Wadlow, "Kick-Ass 2" is the follow-up to 2010's initial installment, which was adapted from Mark Millar's comic books. The story doesn't at all shy away from violence, featuring two teens (Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Chloe Grace Moretz) who decide that they don't need special powers to fight crime and develop their own superhero personas.
The sequel sees Taylor-Johnson and Moretz reprise their roles of Kick-Ass and Hit Girl, with Carrey signed on to play fellow crime-fighter Colonel Stars and Stripes. (You can watch the redband trailer here.)
Carrey said in his tweeted statement on Sunday that he's not "ashamed" of "Kick-Ass 2," but that "recent events have caused a change in my heart." When a Twitter follower asked Carrey why his change of heart didn't occur after the shootings at Columbine or Virginia Tech, the actor explained that "it did, over time."
Nonetheless, Carrey's remarks have left creator Millar "baffled."
On his website, Millar explains that he's a huge fan of Carrey, and "made a mental note" to work with him after the actor demonstrated his own fandom for "Kick-Ass." In Millar's eyes, Carrey's turn in the sequel is some of the actor's best work, making his withdrawal of support "all the more surprising."
"As you may know, Jim is a passionate advocate of gun-control, and I respect both his politics and his opinion, but I'm baffled by this sudden announcement as nothing seen in this picture wasn't in the screenplay eighteen months ago," Millar writes. "Yes, the body count is very high, but a movie called 'Kick-Ass 2' really has to do what it says on the tin. A sequel to the picture that gave us HIT-GIRL was always going to have some blood on the floor and this should have been no shock to a guy who enjoyed the first movie so much."
And then there's the fact that "'Kick-Ass 2' isn't a documentary," Millar points out.
"Like Jim, I'm horrified by real life violence (even though I'm Scottish) ... This is fiction," he continues. "Kick-Ass avoids the usual bloodless body count of most big summer pictures and focuses instead of the CONSEQUENCES of violence, whether it's the ramifications for friends and family or, as we saw in the first movie, Kick-Ass spending six months in hospital after his first street altercation."
While Millar hopes that Carrey will come around to supporting the sequel, "ultimately, this is his decision," he concluded. "I've never quite bought the notion that violence in fiction leads to violence in real life any more than Harry Potter casting a spell creates more Boy Wizards in real life. Our job as storytellers is to entertain and our toolbox can't be sabotaged by curtailing the use of guns in an action movie."
"Kick-Ass 2" is slated to land in theaters on August 16.
I loved the first one and have been waiting for this with great anticipation! When I saw it on Comcast On-Demand I immediately rented it. Like most sequels, this wasn't as good as the first and it's hard not to make comparisons to the first movie.
The first thing I noticed was the lack of a good soundtrack that went with the first movie. Scenes like Hit-Girl whooping ass to Joan Jett's "Bad Reputation", or the old Banana Splits song "Tra La La" Song totally made the first one awesome for me. The soundtrack was as important as the characters.
As the movie was unfolding I kept waiting for some funny/rocking music to play. Unfortunately, I was pretty let down that they didn't spend the money to acquire some interesting/funny/rocking songs for this movie.
Then the plot was sort of handicapped by the fact the characters had matured. I felt the actors all did a good job, but the built in humor that came along with an innocent naive Kick-Ass character getting his butt beat, or the irony of a 10 year old foul mouthed girl killing someone with the same zeal she would pursue a boy band with was gone.
I think they spent a little to much time developing the idea of a group of super hero's and and not enough time developing Kick-Ass & Hit-Girl characters. Overall, I liked it, and I'm sure most will... It just wasn't as fresh and new as the original.
More about the movie you can also find it here
So because he's not supporting the the film he should work for free? You think that he makes much of anything off the movies he used to do? The guy still has to live on a daily basis, and considering just his electric and heating probably run 60k monthly and I doubt he's making much off his stint as Ace, The Mask,Cable Guy, Dumb & Dumber, I love you Phillip Morris the guy probably is hurting for cash. It explains the movies he's done recently.
Many of us were taught from an early age that movies are not real life. Yet, some people have a hard time distinguishing fantasy from reality and that's why disclaimers have been added to warn people 'not to try this at home', because what they are seeing is being performed by 'trained actors'.
Violence has been around since before the cave man made his first kill to survive. You cannot stop violence. Even Jesus used violence when he cleansed the temple ... "[Jesus] made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple area, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables." John 2:15
I think everyone has a right to their political opinion, but I don't think that Hollywood stars like Jim should be using their exclusive access to the media to force their opinions on others. Who cares what his opinion is about Sandy Hook. I don't. Who cares about his opinion of gun control. I don't. I mean whoopee, he doesn't like violence. So what. There isn't a need to tell the world that! Just sthu and don't accept any scripts that have violence. Easy enough? Jim really looks like a crybaby by making these kinds of statements. No one cares about your opinion, Jim. They only want to see you act. Get over it.
We are suppose to be a free society. That means we have the freedom to make choices. Not everyone makes good choices. For example, the person that committed the horrible atrocity at Sandy Hook. Because his choice caused the death of so many children, maybe we should take away everyone's ability to make choices, instead of taking away their guns? Just something for you to think about, Jim.
Don't think it is for publicity at all, from what I've observed in the past this is just how Jim Carrey is. I think he is a do-gooder and I just hope this doesn't get him into trouble over his contract.
To bad, its his best work in years. Also as said before me, he seems to have no qualms about cashing the check. Go back to penguin movies Jim.
You guys do realize that Sandy Hook victims were most 5 and 6 years olds compared to other shootings where it was mostly adults and teenagers. right? All mass shootings are terrible, but you tend to think about it harder when it's smaller children. I do think he should donate the money made from that movie.
Fine, Jim. Bothers you that much? GIVE BACK THE PAYCHECK.
What a drama queen. Don't worry Jim, nobody will think less of you. That is until you spout like this.
Look at the garbage this man has given us over the years and ask yourself if you really care about this fool's opinion.
Grow up Jim....
Rule #1: Don't drink and tweet
Too late. You took the paycheck, the damage is done. The film is out and the sad vulnerable minds who will imitate its carnage are cooking something up now . Columbine wasn't enough for you to take a stand sooner? Aurora wasn't enough to make you reject this offer sooner? Are you for real about non-violence? How about donating all the $ you made from this piece of junk to an effective non-violence program, then you will have something worthy of a press conference.
All righty then!
Maybe he should give back the money he was paid for the sequel. And maybe he should go back to Canada where there is no violence. Besides, he is not a very good actor. A good face manipulator yes.
What a tool.. Like anyone cares what he really thinks, just keep dancing for our entertainment fool.
PRESS RELEASE: Jim Carey thinks your stupid enough to have already forgotten ALL previous school shootings... "I did Kickass a month b4 Sandy Hook and now in all good conscience I cannot support that level of violence,"
BECAUSE OF SANDY HOOK????? I guess columbine, movie theater killings, timothy McVeigh, 9/11, random kidnappings weren't reason enough.... Ive lost all respect for this lame...
Its not like he was not aware of the issue prior to this movie–not sure why he ever got involved....
I don't understand why he's being judged so harshly with comments like, "Well, why now? Why not after Columbine?!" Like, I get where you are coming from with this statement but see the answer as common sense. Everybody agrees Columbine was tragic. But the times in which this happened are not the same times in which Sandy Hook happened. Gun control is HUGE in our collective consciousness right now. And yes, Columbine brought up the same issues but I feel it's just gotten to be BIGGER because of the *repeated* incidence of gun violence in our country.. One school shooting is shocking, but multiple school shootings/theater shootings over the years.. to the point that it isn't really shocking anymore, is clear evidence of something gone amiss in our culture. I think for Jim and the rest of us, it all just kinda piled up to the point where the problem can't be ignored anymore. Is a decline in violence in films going to remedy the problem? Certainly not. Nor will Jim's failure to support violent films such as this. But it's important to put your support and your money where your beliefs lie and I applaud him and anyone else for doing so. It doesn't make him inauthentic that he didn't withdraw violent movie support after Columbine. You're focusing on events in the past to create the narrative you want to believe in; and focusing less on what is going on in our lives and culture in present time.
Maybe the movie is a stinker and he's trying to distance himself from bad writing.
If Jim Carrey cared about anything he wouldn't have been party to Jenny McCarthy's "antivax" movement to increase the suffering and mortality rate of children. Hard to accept that he's "anti-violence" when he's also "pro-child-suffering" at the same time.
Being what you call "anti-vaccine" is NOT pro-suffering. "Vaccine-cautious" is more like it. In Europe they are amazed at how insane we are with immunizations. They wouldn't dare give infants as many as we do, let alone the number of vaccines a child in the U.S. will receive before the age of 5. Vaccines are NOT a natural, God-given form of human immunization, so to defend it as such when vaccines contain many substances you wouldn't ingest or touch on a normal day is astonishing. They are a relatively new innovation in human history, as with many other things to come along over the last century or so. Autism is ON THE RISE. Do the research. I have 2 autistic sons in a row, both received a ridiculous number of vaccines at a very early age. Is that the cause? Maybe, maybe not, maybe but in combination with other factors – environmental toxins, genetics, GMO's and synthetic food ingredients, pesticides, etc etc. You'd be a fool to pretend everything is hunky dory, and that those who are cautious about things people like you throw all of your faith in without question – like vaccines – are wacko nutjobs when they CLEARY SEE FIRST HAND that something is up. I'd say YOU are "pro-suffering" since my children and many other people are in fact suffering and you don't want to help root out the cause.
I wonder if Jim is willing to take his whole paycheck from the movie and donate it to Sandyhook then.
Lost the battle but still fighting...JUST LAUGH AT HER.
confirm if sep
Mass shootings at Colombine, VT, Aurora, and Fort Hood were cool with Jim Carrey. Sandy Hook not so much.
Jim Carrey walks around with armed body guards.
no he doesn't.
why do anyone care what his decision is...its his business.
Well when he interjects his thoughts into main stream twitter......
And to the rest of you tools out there, who cares how much he donates? what does it matter? "but you still cashed your paycheck." you people amaze me. Awful quick to donate someone elses money.....
Most of what is said means zero....
What does withdrawing support mean? He's not going to accept compensation for his work on the film? He's not going to show up at the premier? What the heck is he even talking about? Not a statement that means anything.
Actors are usually asked/requested to “do press” to promote a film’s release, meaning they go on talk shows, attend publicity events and premiers, for example. That’s most likely what he’s talking about when he says he’s “withdrawing support” from the film.
I completely agree. He should say something like,"in light of recent violent events I am going to donate all the money I made on the film blah blah blah". I guess everyone says stupid stuff though...
sad story but a light will be at the end.
I hope there is no clause in his contract that stipulates he has to promote the movie.
Ironically, if there were more good guy vigilantes as in the original film, doubtless things such as Sandy Hook wouldn't happen in the first place, or would be STOPPED before they're allowed to go on and on. I only wish there were characters such as "Hit Girl" in real life, takin' care of business, and getting the bad guys before the system does....and lets them spend a few years in prison before loosing them on the general public again. Carrey: shut up and go back to Canada and listen to Gino Vanelli cassettes!
I bet he cashed his paycheck for his time on this film.
So this is really just a movie promo made to look like a news story..
Nice publicity stunt Jimmy.....
its so hysterical at this point I cannot stop laughing...
Seriously, why does his "opinion" matter to anyone? We have an ACTOR (not a very good actor either) who gladly has portrayed many different characters and accepted payment to play these roles, then he turns around and bites the hand that feeds him.
Truthfully, everyone is sorry and deeply saddened by what happened in Connecticut however, Jim Carrey and his lame ass movies will not change anything NOR will it stop the violent insanity that caused it in the first place. Neither will any other political movement that the media conglomerates like to push on people.
This is stupid for us to quibble over this mans thought and feeling of the moment.
Don't you see?
He just gave the film a huge promotion.
What a great publicity stunt!
You can be sure he is cashing those checks however...
He is such a hypocrite.
the only jim carrey is the 1 in the picture
I'll be impressed on the day that Jim Carrey takes every dime he made from every movie he ever made that had any violence in it and donates it to victims of violence and care for the mentally ill.
let's hope so
I didn't know Jim Carry was so totally ***gay****. No wonder all his wives leave him. He's a droopy noodle man.
If she's got the diane habit....she can't sue anyone
If this entire fiasco is real, the producers should sue the living daylights out of him.
Just laugh at it-all one can do
I would hope that based on his current position, that Jim Carey is going to donate his pay and future royalties to victims of violence.
and donates some too the people who have problems.
Jim Carrey is obviously an idiot and a hypocrite. Why doesn't he take that fat paycheck from Kick-Ass 2 and donate it to the families of Sandy Hook victims or to the families of gun violence victims in Chicago, the gun violence capital of the world? He's not getting anyone talking about gun control, he's just getting people talking about what a tool he is. Jim Carrey, I hate you. The only movies you were in that didn't totally suck had nothing to do with you. They had everything to do with the supporting cast. You are a non-factor in the movie making business. Just sit back and fade into oblivion like you're going to do eventually anyway.
Will Mr Carey still receive his paycheck and various future royalties? Friggin' hollywood hypocrite.
There's so much out there to see and do... you don't need to have a fascination with violence. It doesn't give you control, it RIPS IT FROM YOU. I'm not saying that violent movies lead directly to violence and are the only thing that do (far from it), but they frustrate people and agitate them, and give certain types of people an easy pathway.
They make you lose that much more control of the prefrontal cortex in your brain... this doesn't necessarily make people violent, but think about it – you're losing control over your emotions, and that ALWAYS leads to unhappiness. So you get the short-term reward of the movie, the experience itself, being with people, being social, whatever. But if you ever stop being social, your brain is not going to be distracted by all of the ancillary reward systems that keep your underlying lack of control in check, and if you're lonely long enough, you DO get the kind of violence seen in real life.
I'm not trying to keep people from making movies or people from seeing them... but think about what really makes you happy, and I doubt getting subconsciously f***ed up in the head while you're laughing and ewwing is probably not your idea of satisfaction. Quit the fascination with this stuff... you'll only need to see more and more violent things to get a reaction from your dopamine receptors if you do find some kind of short-term high from gore. Whatever, your lives. You should want them to be worth it.
If you want to swear off movies, books, games, music with violence, go to it. But I like a good story, and taking all violence out of all media would be an industry killing handicap. Maybe you should just kick your dopamine habit and leave the rest of us alone to enjoy life.
@James PDX: "...industry killing..." and ..."kick...habit...?"
So much violent imagery in the words you chose there.
Thankfully, almost nobody cares if a dumber pet detective backs a movie, especially when that pet detective made a lot of money working on that film.
Hey Carry.....make some more comments and press releases... PLEASE... We enjoy laughing at you.
Ahhh poor Jim Carry... nobody loves him any more. cough cough.. Maybe you should make another corny love story where you are the miss understood nerd who gets the girl in the end. I laughed till I cried. Maybe another another super power nerd movie where you straighten out the world... naaaaaa How about another movie about being an idiot.. YES that's the ticket. You can just be yourself !
Why not support the movie and use it as a platform to discuss real violence. Kick-ass 1 did a great job of raising questions about the nature of heroism (Hit Girl was a mass-murderer who just happened to be going after the right people). You could probably get further with a little subtlety than with some strange hands-off gesture.
If Columbine and Virginia Tech affected him OVER TIME, then why did he still choose to do the Kick-Ass sequel? He must have gotten over it.....
ok like this isn't the real steve miller from the steve miller band right?
Hey Jim, you had no problem cashing those checks for doing the movie. How about donating that money to the victims and their families...
Aw, isn't that cute? Jim Carrey thinks he making a difference . . . .
"that violence in fiction leads to violence in real life any more than Harry Potter casting a spell creates more Boy Wizards in real life" You do realize that thousands of kids showed up dressed as Boy Wizards every time a book or movie was released? What a poor example to pick. You could have said zombies or vampires.
its only until the actual hair grows...this is how i looked way back when.
Also 'causation' is kind of a simple question to raise about the role of violence in film.
Blood diamonds. It's nice to be against them. But are you going to give yours up?
It's self-serving grandstanding at it's best. maximum PR with minimal personal affect. It's the opposite of sacrifice or charity.
Only issue I have with Carrey taking his particular stance is his hypocrisy. I am sure he didn't mind cashing the checks he received from making the movie. I don't agree with his gun control stance. And while I think violence (among other things) is an issue in what is coming out of Hollywood I DO have the option of not tuning in, so they can produce what they want, I can choose to watch or not.
Did he return the salary he received for doing the movie? If he wants out, he should not benfit at all
Where was the outrage from actors, politicians and the media coverage, while this same issue rages in the African and Hispanic American communities.
Now that the same violence that has been in the African and Hispanic American community for decades has now reach the safe haven of suburbia… now it is an issue, now we need gun control, now people need to be evaluate. Sadly it will not succeed for we as a nation has forgotten one critical element…(GOD/Yahweh)
Yeah, right. Moar Gawd Pleez because that never caused any wars. FAIL
Your god was the most violent and murderous being to ever (allegedly) exist. The guy committed genocide, for crying out loud. And yet you point to our turning away from this violent deity as the reason for our own violence? You make even less sense than your god who sanctioned forcing rape victims to marry their rapists.
Millar says: "I've never quite bought the notion that violence in fiction leads to violence in real life any more than Harry Potter casting a spell creates more Boy Wizards in real life."
Guess what, Millar. Spell casting by wizards is make believe. Violence is not. Portraying violence in movies may influence people's view of violence, because violence is a real thing that people can do. Spell casting only works in movies.
Right, because there was no violence in the world before television. Also that explains why violence is most prevalent in places where people actually HAVE movies that they can watch, right? <- That was sarcasm, in case you couldn't tell. You do seem pretty dumb, to be fair.
Tell that to all of the self-proclaimed witches and their ilk practicing right here in the US. Regardless, should we stop portraying any bad thing that happens in real life for fear it will make people do it more? Imagine if all books, songs, games, and movies were suddenly restricted from portraying any grief, strife, or violence. You could pretty much kiss goodbye all of these forms of media.
Jim Carrey, you have single-handedly ruined a good movie chain. Your ignorance and vile stupidity has tainted the Kick-Ass franchise. I hope you get graped by a armadillo.
Interesting that you end your point with a violent image.
I don't believe violent individuals deserve to have their fetish satisfied. There you go.
EvinAR, explain to me how being graped by the mild mannered armdillo is a violent experience? Maybe you've been graping people wrong.
I was graped once in our high school cafeteria, while sitting at a table near the salad bar. That experience will haunt me the rest of my days.
I don't like violence either. I guess I'll judge when I see the movie.
And he immediately donated all monies received regarding his involvement to charities dealing with victims of violence... oh wait, no he didn't!
IF he had donated his salary from the movie to a relative cause I might take him seriously. At this point he sounds like another actor gone stupid (like the kid from Two and 1/2 Men) but still taking the big money they make for roles 'they are so against'.
Good for him!!!! Glad someone is finally taking a stance. Tired of all the violence in film!!!!
A stand? Really? How is it a stand? It's him being a small minded person. Someone not truely open to film. It sounds like someone that got a lucky break a long time ago and is now using his status to sell a message. I message of bs
Well, except he is IN the film...and has been and will continue to get PAID for the film...but otherwise you are spot on.
Talking heads pretending they don't know how time works. He had a change of heart After he filmed and After Sandy Hook, pretending he didn't know it would be violent is showing off your own stupidity, now if you actually disagree with his action and change of heart, that is something you may discuss, but acting like Sandy Hook was nothing to everyone, which in some ways it may have become that, is quite ignorant on your parts.
The next time a child kills someone close to them or themselves, please charge the child with first degree murder, because after all, guns don't kill people.
clean the house..
nobody cares what jim carrey is doing
Well, I didn't even know there was a Kickass II coming out until Mr. Carrey took his "stand"...nice job dude. Now I'm gonna' go see it! Hmmmm, interesting how that works isn't it, DUMAZZ! Do we really hold these people up as examples?...INTELLIGENT examples?
Huh?...to both of you.
I wish CNN would ban their school from these forums. They can't use their phones to text in class so they come here and say weird stuff. Also they walk on my lawn.
more info later.
If he's truly against gun violence then the money he was paid to do the film and all royalties need to go to the victims. If his so ashamed of this film then he shouldn't reap any rewards. To me if he does then his words mean nothing.
Dear Jim Carrey,
Please $@*# off and die.
I didnt realize that violence was violent before Sandy Hook. -Jim Carrey.
Just another Hollywood hypocrite who says one thing but does another. The do-as-i say not do-as-i do position is just a sad joke and he should be ashamed of himself. If he really meant what he said he would donate the money made from this film to victims of gun violence. But he won't so his words ring hollow.
He accepted his paycheck just fine.
I don't see him saying he's going to repay all the money he made from doing the movie.
I'm fairly anti-gun, but this is pointless. Not only will it not change anything in the least as to how much violence exists, but it is also just not practical for Carrey to oppose "violence". Guns, OK, doable but limiting. Violence? There' not a movie he's ever made that didn't have moments of violence, and his career is mostly comedies.
All they need to do is make every film a disney family film and they will see an explosion of violence and rage from the public. Violence in films is the only way most people get that angst out!
THANK YOU JIM! This country is obsessed with violence and it needs to stop. Do I think that violence in movies and TV are to blame? Not completely, but they are definitely a part of the problem. I enjoy an action film as much as the next guy but that doesn't make it healthy. Don't listen to the comments. You're obviously getting wiser, you did the right thing, and you just got even cooler in my book. Bravo!
I completely reject your argument that this country is "Obsessed with violence." If 15 million people go to see a violent film, that movie is a 'blockbuster." But 15 million people represents less than 10% of the adult population of the nation. And while there are a lot of films with violence, I suspect that it is the same couple of million people going to see those films. Most folks that I know would not watch a film if it were too violent. I saw the first Kick-Ass and liked it but not because of the violence. In fact, I thought that it was a bit too violent, but the story was good so I enjoyed it. My point is that making blanket statements not only exposes your lack of understanding but doesn't do anything to further the discussion.
"I enjoy an action film as much as the next guy but that doesn't make it healthy." Hypocrite much?
Humans have been obsessed with violence as long as we've existed. It is a natural part of being of humand and there is nothing wrong with it – however we need to learn to control it – eg. not bursting into an elementary school and killing 26 people. Enjoying violence and carrying out an act of violence can't be thrown into this debate together. I enjoy horror movies, but I would never hurt a fly. So your connection there is illogical.
I don't believe I've ever seen a more hypocritical post in my life...
Comes from a man whose favorite band is "Cannibal Corpse".
I have the solution! They could replace all the guns in the movie with pieces of human fecces, and instead of bullets – feces! Jim, films don't kill – crazy people do!
It's a pitiful day when a comedian can't take a joke. Not even their own.
Unless Mr. Carrey is also going to donate the entirety of his paycheck to an anti-gun charity to the exact cent he is simply put a hypocrite and consequently I will make a note to never watch any of his films ever again.
Also, I'm anti-gun as well, but since when does one school shooting make someone change their tune to the degree that they are essentially disowning their own film? Where was his outrage prior to making this film considering the plethora of school shootings that have occurred in Jim Carrey's lifetime? Apparently it takes Mr. Carrey 50-some school shootings and 100-some mass shootings to truly care.
The dude is a hypocrite.
This may be the killing blow for his ailing career.
Thank you Jim Carrey! We already loved ya in our household, but now you may be one of our favorites.
Thank you Sir for standing up for the right thing... in the world of hollywood that ain't easy (it's actually not easy to do any where, but our world needs more people who will do what you did: stand up for the right thing.) It's not always popular in the moment to do that, but the example will live longer than film! And if we want our society to take a different (non violent) turn, then we must start making different (more difficult!) choices!
Again, we applaud you!
You DO understand he actually made the movie and got a HUGE paycheck and will be receiving royalties into perpetuity, don't you?...how easily swayed we are by our "stars"...
Wow....that may be one of the dumbest posts that I have ever read. So you adore hypocrits.....wow!
if he can't in good conscience support the film he participated in, maybe he can in good conscience donate the money he made from it to the victims of gun violence
Let's see how the apologists work their way around that one...
He waited for his paycheck to clear before withdrawing support from the movie.
I have no respect for Jim anymore. He obviously knew what the movie was about and at his age he should already know where he stands on violence in movies. He's a hypocrite and I feel bad for everyone else involved in the movie that has to deal with his crap.
If Carrey wants to undercut the movie, in all fairness he needs to return his salary to the studio.
So, will he be donating his multi-million dollar paycheck to a charity as well?
Or is this just a baseless stunt with no real gesture other than he won't show up to press events?
Give me a break. Like violent movies is the cause of school violence. Hell, school violence and the media itself can be the cause of alot of things in the world, like public stupidity. Next thing we will hear is he will say he isn't going to do any more comedy cause of this movie. Maybe someone should give him a diaper for the pity party he is throwing.
Jim Carrey is growing up.
No, he really isn't. You do understand he is 51 years old, right?
Remember when Liam Neeson said he wouldn't do any movies with guns in them and then his next movie was star wars where he shot lasers at people and chopped people's body parts off with a light saber. lol
Gotta love those Hollywood hypocrites.
Irish ladies are the best. Keep the good genetic work on.
Jim should donate his paycheck and royalties from this movie to the sandy hook families, in all good Conscience.
I agree. Too easy to take all those millions and sit at home. He should be pounding the pavement at the premiers. What movie is he going to do next?
Canada called, they want their idiot back.
I second the motion. He is an idiot. He needs to butt the hell out of my right (by the way, I am a woman) to own, bear and use arms to protect myself and my loved ones.
Jim, with all due respect, I really couldn't care less.
Most men stick to their principles without fanfare.
If you must call attention to yourself, so be it.
Jim Carrey is an awesome actor. Look at what a great job he is doing at playing a person whose opinion anyone values.
I knew guys lost testosterone with age but I didn't know it was directly replaced with estrogen.
Wow. Do you have daughters?
The guy is an idiot, no doubt. But please don't insult all women by comparing him to us.
Can someone find Jim's balls and please return them to him please.
I just lost every bot of respect I had for this man.
his onions if he had any would be in CANADA,bot I could be wrong.PS,go home.
I have never had respect for him as an actor (VERY juvenile comedy, if you can even call it comedy), and certainly don't respect him as a man.
There's only 1 place you can experience violent fantasy vicariously – in a movie theater. However for some people, it does fill their heads with bad ideas. Where did you think to go around with a samurai sword in a grocery store. Even in the most responsible hands, guns are just a disaster waiting to happen. There is no reason for a gun's existence other than to kill something or someone. Unless you hunt for food, which makes for plenty of disasters, your gun is to kill somebody. I've never had one and won't miss them. I don't think the majority of people are responsible or stable enough to own a gun. Take 3rd world countries as the natural experiment of what people do to one another when guns and ammunition are passed out to people without restriction. Disaster. Many 1st world people are simply 3rd world people who have a lot more to lose and so live within the boundaries of society.
So, all those examples of Third World countries' militias using machete's or other melee weapons to kill thousands don't count? Guns aren't the problem, stupid/evil people are the problem. I've been playing violent video games and watching violent movies all my life. I'm also former Army Infantry. I was made fun of by my fellow soldiers for not being violent enough. Ergo, your statement makes no sense.
I don't believe there is anyone taking a stand
I agree with anyone who takes a stand against Mark Millar.
5 minutes way too long on the subject.
It is not "more guns all the time" vs "no guns ever" as a great many people seem to think. there is plenty of middle ground. Personally, I think pro-gun-nuts and anti-gun-nuts are both morons. I am pro-intelligence and pro-responsibility.
That said, I am a fan of Jim Carrey's movies, and a fan of Kick-Ass. So yes, I will watch this, and No, I will not go on a killing spree afterward.
Sure... you say that now, till an evil gun finds its way into your hand and forces you to kill innocents.
Only fools will spend money to watch such an idiot.
a lot of fools will be spending their money then, this fool included. The kick ass movie was great
I was looking forward to this movie till i saw he was in it. Oh well.
Carrey isn't relevant any longer and hasn't been for a long time. I will not be seeing this movie in the theatre but I already made that decision a few days ago when it was a preview in some other movie I was watching. Carrey, like most actors need to stop making statements unless they back it up with their checkbooks. I would have had more respect if he had give his proceeds to the sandy hook coverup...er I mean victims fund.
I'm pretty sure the reason he's going all "anti gun" is at least partially to draw up Google hits with his name in them. If he REALLY cared about Sandy Hook victims, he'd donate what he made from this movie to a fund in their honor. I'm pretty sure he won't, but I'd be happy to stand corrected.
you couldnt spell 'before' b4, really?
Twitter messages have a limit of something like 143 characters. One is forced to make the point concisely, and often with such abbreviations.
Which is the reason it is a ridiculous, mind sucking, worthless platform that is the sole "news" source for HUNDREDS of MILLIONS of people.
Why I think that is fine to withdraw your support for a film you created, now...tell me, did you donate your prceeds / revenue to the Sandy Hooks fund? Talk is one thing, however show me the receipt. Many wealthy people such as actors have such a conscience once thay "have" theirs. I doubt very highly that he would have done such a thing while being a starving artist on "In Living Color".
I used to like his roles in the 90's and early 2000's, but this is just annoying.
I'm sure he didn't have any problem taking his paycheck....seems a little hypocritical to me.
Don't blame Carrey or movies for violence out there. Half these people who commit these crimes are mentally insane. All of you pointing fingers anywhere else than bad parenting and a lackluster mental health system is the reason this stuff happens. Start being a parent and stop letting TV be it, spend time with your kid. Sandy Hook was nothing short of an insane child with serious mental issues and parents who didn't do everything in their power to help him or protect her school. IF you know your kid has mental issues don't teach them how to shoot guns or keep them in the house.
I'm sure the movie will do just fine without your support Mr Carrey. Never was a fan of your over the top acting style anyway.
Apparently he only cares about killing children if it is done with guns (which is clearly horrible beyond words), but not the ones he has contributed to killing by advocating against childhood vaccination...
Dave is that your real name? Or are you really Michelle Bachman?
I was never a Carey fan. I thought his "comedy" was over-the-top and childish. Irritating really.
hey im from canada and i dont want him here either
Unfortunately, Jim has just promoted by not promoting. Miller makes a lame point of 'nothing is in the movie that wasn't in the script 18 months ago.' OK, but Sandy Hook happened 6 months ago...after principle photography ended.' Another point? I never heard of the first movie.
Just cause you haven't heard of it doesn't mean it isn't one of the most entertaining movies to come out in the past few years.
That is his choice, however, if he truely feels that way he should give back the money he made or donate it to the Sandy Hook cuase. All hat no cattle, some actors think that because they are famous somehow people care about what the think.
So Sandy Hook was the first school shooting? Jim wasn't aware of violence before Sandy Hook when he signed on to make the movie?
I welcome Jim Carrey to donate 100% of his earnings from this movie to help inner city children to get a better education and therefore reducing the likelihood of a violent future for them. It seems only fitting considering his recent "withdrawal of support". For Jim Carry to profit off this movie would be hypocritical, don't you think?
May I inquire as to why "inner city children" should be the beneficiaries of this money?...Don't you think "inner city children" get enough money? Oh, that's right, the lords of poverty simply USE "inner city children" as a way to get the money flowing, not to actually help them...that's how Sharpton affords his Upper West Side digs...
"Oh, I'm still going to cash the fat paycheck I've gotten from them, but I withdraw my support for the movie."
He had probably finished the movie before all of this happened. I too would feel sick to my stomach as the world is full of violence. I would take at least some of that and try to help ease the families pain. I would think it was time to start walking away from violence for humanity anyways. It doesn't lead to anything good.
RIGHT, David, 'cuz there were never any mass shootings before Sandy Hook....
I can't help noticing Jim Carrey cashed all the checks from all the movies he's starred in, even those that were violent, eh?
Well, Jim, I can't stand behind a Canadian hypocrite who thinks he can tell us Americans how to live, so I'm boycotting your movies (as are a lot of other people). Go back to the Great White North, ya hoser!
I didn't see where he's telling anyone how to live only that he's no longer supporting a movie he made. Maybe you feel he's correct on some inner level and think you should follow his example by thinking he's telling you how to live.
Another celebrity who should just shut up... obviously he doesn't mind getting PAID from the VIOLENCE people wish to see.
Why would he give the money back? Would you? He still worked long hours filming this and put in the time. Maybe a generous donation to put his money where is mouth is... but I don't expect or ask him to give it all back.
Did someone put a gun to his head and force him to be in this movie? He had a choice, he made it, now he's being a condescending hypocrite all the way to the bank just like so many other Hollywood liberals.
Then he never should have made the movie.
Either make the movie and promote it like youre supposed to or don't make it.
Hes a hypocrite plain and simple.
It all depends on what is in his contract, but I am pretty sure he has breached its terms.
Wasn't going to see it for him anyway. Chloe Moretz, on the other hand... delicious. 10/10
Yeahhh, she's 16 years old.
You're right nate, she was hotter in the first one. lol.
Ironically, him not backing up the camera just increases people’s interest in the movie.. making his decision counter-intuitive. Unfortunately.
Yea yea, there will be people saying “not me, I agree with Jim and I won’t see the film” that’s not how psychology works tho
no idea why I wrote “camera” instead of “movie”
I was just thinking the same thing- Either Jim Carrey is an idiot or he is doing this on purpose to bring attentio to the film. This only brings more attention to the movie, and if I was a teenage kid, saying a movie is violent and you won't support it is only more reason for a teen to go watch it.
Dumb or brilliant, whichever you are trying to accomplish, Jimmy boy.
The third option is that he is so narcissitic that he realized this movie sucks and is just distancing himself from it because he thinks he is too good for it.
> Ironically, him not backing up the camera just increases people’s interest in the movie
Otherwise known as the "Striesand Effect".
I somehow doubt that Jim Carrey needs the money from making a film like this. And he has contributed plenty to causes he believes in. Whatever you think of his talent (I think he has a very unique talent that no one else has), I admire his taking a stance on the violence we embrace as "entertainment" in the movie industry. Yeah, he did the movie, but then he had a change of heart. He didn't have to say anything, but he did. I give him a thumbs up.
He ain't giving the money back
He is a hypocrate just like all the other Hollywood actors.
Want to know how special they live?
Call 911 from a Rodeo drive phone number or street number and see how long it takes the cops to respond.
Call 911 from a Ghetto or some poor area and see how long it takes.
Yep lots of good things..... Like scaring people with false info about vaccines causing people to put their kids at risk.
Hes an idiot through and through
So, is he going to give back his pay or donate it to charity? Somehow, I don't think so. Another greedy 1%'er. Oh, that's right, rich liberals can't be 1%er's.
Does this mean Jim Carrey will donate his salary from the movie to the victims of Sandy Hook Elementary?
How do you know Jim hasn't donated money to the victims already? I'm sure most celebrity donations are done anonymously so they don't have to be analyzed by someone like you.
I can understand a celebrity or wealthy person trying to keep their donation low-key. But if they're going to champion a cause that invites critical comments (like in this case), then they should be just as vocal about what they intend to do to back up their beliefs. If they don't, it becomes very one-sided for them and makes them look more hypocritical than they ever wanted to be. It's just my opinion posted on a comment section of an article that will be gone in a few days, but I think show business celebrities should keep their political and religious views to themselves and stick to what they do best...entertain people. When they're not in front of a camera, then they can act like real people. Would 'we' be able to spout off these hot-button beliefs while we were at work? Doubt it.
...and yes, I think he should take some sort of public action to back up his publicly publicized beliefs. He says he can't support the film, then he should give up his salary for the film or donate his time or funds to the victims of Sandy Hook. Pretty ridiculous to accept (and keep) a paycheck for a job that you don't believe in anymore. He could've privately spoken to the principals involved and said he refuses to make public appearances for the film, etc. But he chose to make his feelings public. So publicly give back the money. Seems fair to me.
Respect. It's nice to see an American actually reacting meaningfully, and with conscience, when it comes to this issue. To actually be brave enough to change ones views and actions.
So Jim Carey has turned in to a "LITTLE GIRL" you can't protect children or anyone from crazy people. No matter what you do you forget crazy people can act on any impluse regardless of the stimulus.
How, exactly has he turned into a little girl? Explain what you mean by that phrasing.
OH NOES! We cannot have anymore "violence" in the entertainment industry because something bad happened.
News Flash for ya Jim, but bad things have been happening in the world since the beginning of time. Why do you just now decide that violence in a movie is a bad thing?
Was Columbine not bad enough for ya?
How about Oklahoma City?
Aurora Theater Shootings?
I guess the media-sensation that is Sandyhook is where the line is drawn...
Jim Carrey who ?
I urge you to give your paycheck for this movie to the families of victims of Sandy Hook.
Reaction without action means......nothing.
He could've faded away as a funny actor but now he's gonna go down as a desperate, hypocritical has-been if he doesn't give away all the money he makes from the movie towards charity, lol. He really has a low opinion of the public and his fans if he thinks this bs is going to fly without any sacrifice on his part x'D
No. That happened after he did Ace Ventura 2.
Did you seriously, LITERALLY just ‘laugh out loud’ in the middle of that comment, Trudy? I kind of doubt it. It always puzzles me why idiots use that LOL expression because we all know, that 99.9999% of the time they’re lying and are not truly laughing out loud.
Literal Leigh sounds like someone who has probably never laughed in their life...
I just watched the trailer. . . What a bunch of garbage. If ever there was a question as to why there is so much violence in this country, you don't have to look any further than the type of media being internalized by people on a daily basis. It is pathetic that violence has become the main mode of "Entertainment" in this country, and is of no surprise that people become more violent as days go by. Shame on you America for your violence rich diet.
Guess this means you won't be going to see it?
You do realize that violent crime rates have sharply declined over the past two decades, don't you?
I stopped reading at the point when Jim Carrey was referred to as an "actor".
@OwMySkull–I don't care what anyone says that thar is funny!!!!
What a CHUMP! five months after the Aurora theater shooting (anyone else remember that one, because it's not in the article), he could take a paycheck to do the movie just fine.
Didn't know Jim Carrey was still acting. Me, Myself, & Irene seems like a million years ago!
A little sour cream on the taco?
He withdrew support shortly after confirming that his check for the movie had cashed. Wonder if he's going to give away all his earnings from the movie since he no longer supports it?
I wonder if you're the first person here to make that 'original' supposition? Answer - NOT! Scroll down and you'll see you're probably at least the 50th one. Small minds think alike.
@Randy....no, it means that the general and overwhelming opinion is that if he chooses to dis-associate himself with the movie, he should dis-associate himself with the paycheck he received. And that we don't have the time to spend trolling EVERY (191 at last count) comment in order to come up with something unique.
I respect his conscience but I cannot see how one can equate crime fighters with a murderer. Of course, I haven't seen these movies either.
He doesn't seem to like the idea of people taking a stand against criminals. Maybe he lives in a fantasy world were he thinks police show up within seconds of a crime being committed and everyone promises to play nice.
Or, maybe some of you with this ‘wild-west’ mentality live in a fantasy world, where everyone is under constant threat of crime and needs to carry a gun for self-defense. Or, if that’s YOUR reality, perhaps you should move to better neighborhoods.
What a classist thing to say, James.
@James: Anyone can be a victim at any time. I'd much rather be vigilant than hopeful. As far as move to a better area...what, are upper-class neighborhoods somehow free of violent crime? Does nothing bad ever happen in Beverly Hills or Laguna Niguel? Get real man. Besides, not all of us have the option to just up and go. Some of us want to improve an area, instead of running away like cowards. Bad people shouldn't have the power to push good people out of their homes.
PUT YOUR MONEY WHERE YOUR MOUTH IS. Donate everything you made from the movie (plus interest) to anti gun legislation or some victims violence group.
Until then, you are just a blow hard double talker. Get a life. I put you in the same category as that little dweeb Angus Jones from Two in a Half Men.
What jokes.... pathetic jokes...
You said what I was thinking....he needs to put his money where he says his heart is
How do you know what he has and has not donated. He doesn't owe you an account of his charitable giving. Your arrogance stinks to high heavn.
The entire world 'likes' this comment.
(and yes, I have been authorized to speak for the entire world)
So did he return the paycheck?
Yeah.. thought so.
Talk about a shameless attempt to get publicity.
Jim Carrey – "I won't stand for this violence!, but the check for being in the movie sure looks great in my bank account!" ... Please hypocrite at it's best right here folks. If he REALLY stood for what he said he would of donated or started a fund with the money from that movie to show he really cared.
Robert, I definitely agree with you on that one! Also, I enjoyed how Millar made it a POINT to say... "It's fiction."
I probably would of taken you're argument more serious if you'd had better grammer.
@joe: Coming from somebody who can't even spell 'grammar' correctly.
Wow, joe, your (not you're) grammar is worse than the person in question.
and "would of"... Don't you mean "would have". Total failure dude...
"would of".....? really? and you are correcting grammar? try–"would have" ha!
is the failure fresh today? yes, yes it is.
Prescriptive grammarians are usually the worst. They just want to feel like they are better than others; however, when push comes to shove, they're gammer ain't no bitter than urs.
These Hollywood crybabies look like such fools when they think they have the power to change the world by having a little hissy fit over some "cause". You might as well make the movie Jim, because if you don't somebody else will, and nobody really cares about all your opinions anyway. Not one bit. No, really.
He's going to be the last to know. He's a 1 trick pony, talentless and is to serious acting what Huey Lewis to rock music.
Please re-read the article. He already made the movie
Jim Carrey probably means well and thinks this could made a difference but the truth is, as evident by almost every mass shooting, is that the shooter is usually on or just coming off prescribed mind altering drugs. And don't go protesting my post saying your friend Bill was helped by these drugs: that may or may not be the case but it is indisputable that each of these types of incidents include such drugs.
I couldn't agree with you more. I have been hitting message boards as much as possible, writing letters to the editors of local papers and writing letters to my state officials to get this message out, these medications are killing people.
...another movie where he will see $0.00 from me...
This is a beautiful piece of public relations.
I don't know what Jim Carrey's problem is. It must be because he is Canadian. He should realize that in America too many people don't care and are not moved by the deaths of children by gun violence.
No one cares about your agenda. You won't touch my guns, not without a serious fight. period.
I read TheMovieFan's statement several times, and keep missing the part where he said anything about taking anybody's guns. Where did you get that idea? Why are all you right-wing extremists so paranoid about that?
Well said, americans don't like anything more but violence and the right to carry a bazooka on their backs. If kids die for that right, then so be it !
Fine. Give back all the money you make, give another $10,000,000 to charities for the damages you caused, then go make a movie that you can believe in.
So he collected a paycheck and then his principles kicked in? I loved Kick Ass, and I am looking forward to Kick Ass 2, these films are rated R, they are not misleading in their advertising and it is the responsibility of parents to keep kids away from this type of movie. Carrey is a fool for doing this, I would have believed his stance a little more if he decided to return his salary for the film as well.
Senor Ventura shouldn't be passing up any chance to work these days.
By so doing Jim brought more attention to the movie.
Yep. The fastest, most efficient way to get as many people to see this movie as possible, is for the star to jump up and down telling the world to look at him and then the second he gets their attention saying "hey guys, whatever you do, don't go see or support this movie!"
All Millar had to reply with was "Thank you, Jim, for putting 100,000 more b^tts in the seats."
It's been widely reported that Jim Carrey suffers from Bipolar Disorder. If, in fact, this is the case, many people who suffer from mental illness "feel" these tragedies much differently then those without. I happen to love his movies...and will not judge him. Whether this is his true belief or he is doing it for publicity-either way he's got everyone talking...isn't that the point??
You're so right, most people in america don't have any feeling at all towards these tragedies, as long as they get to carry an oozie around and play rambo with their hillbilly moron buddies, all is well. Shame on him for giving a crap about the kids that died !
Just so long as we don't vaccinate them, eh Jim?
Really looking out for the kids, you are.
Maybe he could donate his salary for the movie to an anti-violence/mental health center to placate his fears that the masses will erupt into "kickass" violence. I watched KickAss part 1 and have yet to kill anyone. Stay tuned folks, this soccer mom may just see part 2 of KickAss and bring her own version of it to real life (NOT).
Good luck finding more movie roles Jim. Hollywood doesn't like it when you bite the hand that feeds you. There are actual consequences when you do something stupid like this. Except for the 8 people who agree with him, he's done. Have a nice life back in Canada.
I CAN'T BE STOPPED. POOP!
I'd like to ASS you a few questions.
Hmmm, did Carrey get a bonus for withdrawing his support? Because I think he just performed a huge favor for its marketing team! I will be there. I actually didn't know about the sequel, but thanks to Carrey, I also know it comes out 8/16/13. Cheers!
Stop taking comedians seriously. It's viral marketing. The only goal of this article is to make sure you know there's a Kickass2 coming and that it is violent.
Come on film makers. You can't have it both ways. On the one hand they want us to believe that a good movie will effect you, change you, comment on the human experience in such a way that we'll be different. So, you know, go spend that 10 bucks and see the movie! On the other hand they say, "no, seeing violence won't encourage violence." Which is it? Movies have the power to influence or not?
You're doing exactly what they're doing. Oversimplifying it. Good movies can only positively affect people who are open to good. I have been moved by movies in profound ways while people sitting right next to me will say thats garbage, or I don't get it. They just don't have a big heart.
Likewise just seeing a violent movie won't make you violent. For example that kid that said the Matrix made him murder his family. When I saw the matrix i was watching them from the spirit of a defender. Like they were good people only fighting evil for good reasons. Since i have a passion for life whenever i see violence i will never take it out of context and i will always observe it with the scenario and intentions behind it. Someone who is sick and twisted will only view it to further justify their own hate in their own lives. So as you see it movies can and can not affect us for the good or the bad. All of it is possible but it is profoundly much more in the hands of the viewer. They will proceed SEEK more ideas that further justify their own decided beliefs. Unless you practice mass censorship you can't prevent violent personalities from feeding themselves violent images and ideas.
If smoking in movies aimed at young people has been reduced, surely the use of guns can too. I support Jim Carrey and his decision. Everyone has the right to change their mind, especially after the horror of mass school shooting.
If the teachers at Sandy Hook and columbine had been trained and armed like police officers solely for the purpose of defense in such cases – instead of a good teacher sacrificing her life standing between bullets and the children she could have ended it all with one good shot.
Weapons exist – and just like all dangerous things that you simply can't get rid of (cars, for example) people in this country should teach children and be taught themselves how to defend themselves and how to use and respect the weapon.
Dpetty..your a fool..now I need to read something to get your puke out of my head..
Smoking always kills the user. Guns, in the hands of a trained and intelligent individual, only kill the bad guys...or legal game...or a paper target. Imagine all those women who get attacked on a daily basis...imagine if they had a gun to defend themselves...then only the rapists are the ones getting hurt...
But you want to get people away from guns???
I'd have to agree with Dpetty. Everyone likes to pretend that we can actually effectively control guns. We can't even control drugs and they are completely illegal. Aside from the fact that it is our second amendment right to bare arms for VERY good reasons it is still impossible to effectively outlaw gun violence. I think that media should spend more time responsibly demonstrating quality gun use in movies rather than avoiding guns altogether. Guns are here to stay FOREVER and the more we learn to respect and live with them the safer we will be.
Valid comment... however, this particular movie is not aimed at children (hence the R rating). Violent movies will be around for a long time because they create big bucks for Hollywood.
@Taco, there's one slight problem with your statement - "Guns, in the hands of a trained and intelligent individual..." - too often the guns fall into the hands of UNintelligent individuals, even the ones with this so-called training. What then? Then there's the whole issue of unintelligent people with no training who are using guns. Where does it stop?
Lemme get this straight, Sunny Jim... siding with your anti-vaccine, failed-actress wife Jenny McCarthy to try to make children die from epidemic diseases is OK, but fictional gunplay is bad.
I always get slammed for saying it, but Jenny's body count is higher than Adam Lanza. Stupidity kills faster than evil (and evil rarely works alone).
Um, that would be...
"Well alllriiiiiighty then!"
I bet he happily kept all the money he got for making this movie.
It's because I played Super Mario Bros as a youth that I have this insatiable desire to jump on a turtle's shell whenever I see them.
Oh good, I thought I was the only one! Military enlistments increase every november for the last 5 years too!
I am glad he's doing this. Jim Carey movies have been responsible for so many mass killings that he should never make a movie ever again. In fact, Jim Carey movies should be illegal and punishable by death to all those who watch them. More gun availability though would be great so we, the public, can enforce the illegality of Jim Carey movies on a vigilante basis where every we see it being violated. God Bless America.
Meh, It's just a publicity move, to draw attention to a movie easily glossed over by all the bigger budget movies dropping this summer. Doesn't change my desire to see this movie.
Dear Jim Carrey,
Most people can tell the difference between movie plot violence and real life situations that justifiably call for violence (e.g. self-defense). For those that can't, the issues are more ones of mental health, emotional intelligence, and failures of imagination. The topic is not a violence vs. no violence one steeped in black and white thinking, not in any practical and preventative terms anyway. I hope your position, as it is so far, ahem, is at least in the spirit of prevention.
Most people don't travel what's called the Pathway of Violence (grievance, violent ideation, research/planning, preparation, breach and attack). While most have grievances (the first step) and violent ideation (the second step) at sometime in our lives, we usually think our grievances through better and don't really think violence is "the" answer - most of us don't visualize it in such detail to the point that we then take it that seriously, research, plan, prepare, breach and attack. Mass shootings are not "because" movie violence can push people to take that Pathway to Violence, even if some on that path are obsessed with violence and often come to their deadly attacks dressed in black military fatigues.
Jim, you would do a lot more public good if you used your star power to raise awareness regarding mental health, our understandings of power (informed egalitarian ones vs abuse), emotional intelligence, and better ways to perceive grievances and develop dialog so that violence isn't seen as "the" answer. It's far more powerful to transform grievances into something beautiful like raising awareness than to just make a messy splash. Ahem.
I love to see movies with gratuitously huge body counts. even better if they are based on lame comic books. it's great culture. no wonder we are ranked in the top 137 countries in education standards. but no gay characters...that would be totally immoral. and btw violent movies keep us vigilant so we can make sure the govt isn't spying on us. oh wait...
Like the Arnie version of Total Recall – now that was a gratuitous body count movie.
Sorry Mr. Carrey, you don't get to take away anyone's guns.
you watch too much FoxNews and listen to too much talk radio.
He didn't have a problem filming a movie with this level of violence in it before Sandy Hook. The timing of that event and his involvement in the movie is irrelevant, he'll still do anything for a paycheck.
I'm definitely watching this movie now. I hate politicians and elites telling me what I should or should not do.
As to the violence debate, I just don't understand how America has come to hate science so much (both on the left and the right). Guns and media causing violence are both testable hypotheses and have, in fact, been tested repeatedly. The fact of the matter is, neither is shown to increase violence – period.
If you don't like people watching violent movies or owning guns, at least have the intellectual honesty to just admin that you're an unscientific, emotionally-driven control freak and you want to force other people to do what you think is right. Then, just make the case for forcing other people to live as you choose. At least this way you're not contributing to making America more misinformed and stupid.
So give back all your money. Yerk off. Violence and making fun of "dumb" people was your gateway to $$$. I can't stand even looking at your face anymore ... much less your movies.
Jim Carrey isn't the biggest tool in the world. Will Farrel is.
Two things will come out of this scenario. The movie will tank. The movie will be a huge hit. With or without Carrey's support.
wow, you really narrowed it down there..
You'd think Carrey would have learned something from his starring role in the film "Liar Liar."
Shame on you, Mr. Carrey. Your withdrawal from further support of the film has absolutely nothing to do with a change of heart. You and your manager have simply calculated that the violence represented in the film could somehow produce a negative impact to your reputation and viewer status.
Hollywood stars are as driven by the same demons as politicians. You stand for what makes you popular, not what is always right.
bro, quit acting like you know everything. its not hard to take carreys word for it, noob.
Amazing. A public figure with a conscience. Figures everyone who either ignores their own or doesn't have one would be first in line to criticize.
So its ok for him to actually be IN the movie and grab a check with lots of $$$ but its bad to promote the movie ?
Carrey has not been relevant in a looooong time. Its the only way he can actually grab attention.
Bipolar much, Jim? You didn't realize the violence BEFORE Sandy Hook? Interesting... media ploy. Stay relevant, my friend, stay relevant.
Reblogged this on TheSlashDash.
If Jim feels so strong about this... Then why doesn't he give back the money he made off the movie to a pro-gun control group or donate it to the families of Newtown? I bet he doesn't.
isn't he canadian? go back to canada if you don't like freedom
You mean back to Canada where is Freedom? You are dumb and need to wake up. Media Fed Sheeple
Hopefully this is an acknowledgement by at least one denizen of Hollywood that the glorification of violence in American entertainment does in fact contribute to the scourge of violence in this country (if not comprising the primary cause).
Since those in Hollywood are stupid, it wouldn't surprise me if he did have that opinion.
So... Is Jim Carrey saying that violent movies and video games are causing violence in society???/ I'm sure some of his liberal Hollywood brethren who have scoffed at those claims in the past would have a problem with that stand.
Jim Carrey is washed up anyway. I guess he is just trying to get attention now. Go back to your Fire Marshall Bill routine, that was a lot funnier.
Well let's all follow his lead, and boycott this movie. He obviously doesn't need the money.
Of course Jim Carrey support, or not support, whoever, or whatever, he'd like. I respect that he's putting something on the table in order to do something to help curb the incredible violence in our society. Mr. Millar's statement about the result of Harry Potter's influence on creating sorcerers, versus violent characters influencing violent behavior, is what's known as a defective syllogism. Yes, in this world, violent characters can indeed trigger real violence (something that exists in the real world), whereas sorcery cannot. Unless, of course you believe that there are sorcerers walking among us, like there are violent people. If that's what he thinks, at least he's been able to monetize his psychosis.
Just pointing out the hypocrisy.
While of course virtually every violent, drug celebrating movie is directed, produced and acted by liberals. Any air in that bubble.
A prominent figure speaks out against gun violence, and tons of pro-gun violence conservatards get their panties all up in a bunch. The party of 'family values' seems to care less about people and more about guns.
What à liar. Jim says he won't promote the movie? That's exactly what he's doing by walking about it.
I did not realize there was going to be a kickass 2 until I saw this article
I didn't realize there was even a Kick-Ass 1.
It seems like Carrey's choice should be respected without all this inane hurling of vitriol.
No one seems to want to take responsibility for the escalating violence in our society nor the lack of compassion for the suffering of others.
On another note- I do hope that "Dumb and Dumber To" can find a studio.
I guess I'll take responsibility for it.
Carrey appears to be just another Johnny-come-lately, "Do you see how pious, knowledgeable, and concerned I am?" celeb. The rest of the world would do well to ignore such pontificating celebs.
i would like to kiss his richard.
Respect. It's nice to see an American reacting meaningfully, and with conscience, when it comes to this issue. To actually be brave enough to change views and actions.
He's not American.
Well of course ... now it all makes sense!
But the hypocrite will cash the check for making it... He, like many other in Hollywood got weird once they "made it." and is now not funny or relevant.
Do any of you know for a fact that Jim Carrey has actually "cashed his paycheck(s)" from this movie, as so many of you have remarked? For all we know he hasn't, or maybe he will donate his share to some anti-violence charity. Don't be so quick to jump to conclusions, people.
How do you know that he is not doing this as a publicity stunt? Because for him to finally see the light on violence only after Sandy Hook completely ignores that there was columbine, Aurora Colorado, DC Snipers, and many other violent acts BEFORE HE EVEN SAW THE SCRIPT for this movie.
How do you know he didn't? You shouldn't jump to conclusion either.
I actually haven't jumped to a conclusion myself, if you read what I wrote - I only raised a counter point to the conclusion that so many others have already jumped to.
I agree with Carey but he didn't need to sink a movie that he was paid to be in. Like a previous poster said, he took the cash.He should have kept quiet and later on said "I am reconsidering how I select my roles. "
Don't be a movie, get paid for the work, then come out against it. That's just wrong.
What a richard.
HE IS CANADIAN..
Does Carey realize that the murder rate has dropped drastically over the last thirty years, as violence movie content has increased? I am not a fan of violent movies but I like to, at least, study a topic instead of reacting emotionally.
Lip service ~ donate the money Jim ~ otherwise you are a fraud. all of it.
Let me tell you something! :)
Good for him. Now it's time he put his money where his mouth is and donate what he earned/will earn to gun-control advocacy.
Wow.... I will read the script/ go thru rehearsals/ film the movie/ cash the checks/ but then denounce the movie because of the violence...... At what point did you realize your culpability in this matter Mr Carrey???? Was it before or after you cashed the paychecks?
"I did Kickass a month b4 Sandy Hook."
- Jim Carrey
He cashed the check... HE took the money... And PLEASE don't tell me he thought that the role wasn't violent until after the Sandy Hook shooting occurred. There was Columbine before that, and Aurora Colorado, and the DC Snipers.... The man is a HYPOCRITE plain and simple.
He cashed the check and took the money because it was his salary for working on the movie, which he did in fact do. And considering neither side says anything about money, including the director who is ticked off at Carey and would have reason to throw that in his face, we can't really draw any conclusions as to where it has gone.
Have any of you personally seen him cash the paycheck from making this movie, or taken a look at his bank statement or investment records to confirm the same? Or are you just making half-assed assumptions?
So he worked for free..... Trust me... is ego would have loudly proclaimed that he had given away all of the money from this film to charity to prove he is a much better person than we are. The same statement hold.... he is a hypocrite... There were violent acts long before Sandy Hook occurred... HE just now saw the light.... after he CASHED the check
How many times are you going to say the same thing, Randy? We all bow to such a strong counter point. Did you tjink that up on your own?
I guess I'll keep making that same statement for as long as you idiots keep making the opposite one, or until someone has tangible evidence to support their statement.
Wow. So many different points of view.... This is why there is violence in the world,
This from Fire Marshall Bill...........give me a break.
I cannot see how withdrawing support for a film made months before the Sandy Hook tragedy can, in any way, be an honest gesture on Mr. Carey's part. It is, in fact, a slap in the face to all the many people involved in making this film to not support its success well in advance of its release. Actors need to understand that they are paid to perform and entertain, not to use their profession as a sounding board for their political views.
So because he's an actor, he's not allowed to express personal opinions? Would you feel the same way if he spoke out against racism, or condemned/supported gay marriage, or expressed support for our troops?
Mike... Couldn't help but notice he did not having a problem cashing the paycheck that came along with making the movie.
It's a shame Millar is so blatantly pro-violence that he can't see the forest for the trees. Society will continue to escalate acts of violence if we continue to support media creating inspirational acts of violence.
Obviously false. People have been killing each other since the beginning of Man. They didn't have violent TV shows to watch in biblical times and they still killed each other....
Too bad that there is no solid research to support your thesis. You can keep blaming rock and roll, video games, and movies, but there has been no solid evidence linking any of these things to an increase in violence. In fact, violent crime has been steadily decreasing, while video games and movies have notably become more violent. If anything, history shows that you are completely wrong.
He might be another one of those bleeding heart Hollywood liberals, but I'd still go down on him in a heartbeat.
Such class. Such poise...
You can talk with that name.
Actually, he can't with that ausemkock in his mouth.
Events cause people to reexamine and have a change of heart. It's his choice. I no longer play the CoD and Battlefields games for the same reasons. Sure the director was counting on some Jim Carey star power to push the movie, but his reasoning that he knew the script 18 months ago so should not have a changing opinion is silly. He's not bashing the moving, just isn't comfortable endorsing it.
The kind of endorsement of senseless roller-coaster violence in action movies the public has come to expect from "Actors" in the movies we love to see but not participate in.
I wonder if he'll be donating the check he got for doing this movie to some organization. Then I might take this a bit more seriously.
Exactly. How many times do we hear about entertainers taking a stand, like against global warming, and then hop in their private jet and fly off to another carbon crushing vacation?
My thoughts exactly. "Pulling his support" means nothing if he keeps even one dollar. He should donate all proceeds from this film to a charity for the Sandy Hook families or to help a mother get mental health care for her troubled child. If he keeps even one penny, this is just talk.
He gives quite a lot to charities (including $1 million to 9-11 families), so I wouldn't be surprised if he did.
What a joke for publicity!!!
Jim is such a sick sorry ass for using the murder of innocent children to creat publicity for his personal wealth to be increased.
And no my Family does not spend money on your films.
You are washed up and your schtick old Fire Marshall Bill...
Maybe he could full-heartedly demonstrate his support by returning the money he earned, especially since he will now not promote the movie. That would really send the message that he will not endorse movies from the cesspool called Hollywood by choosing not to prosper from them.
Don't hold your breath.....
Come on now, he has mansions and a fleet of cars to pay for. Of course he isn't going to return any money he made from being in the movie he now doesn't support lol Just another Hollywood hypocrite, nothing to see here.
I loved Kickass and similar movies. I also support gun control. I am impressed with Carey's vocal intent to withdraw support from Kickass 2. I would be more impressed if he donated his pay from doing the movie to a cause that's working to change the culture of violence. That said, i cant wait to see Kickass 2. Yes, I can maintain two simultaneously contradictory ideas in my mind.
Good for him. It's nice to know he's not another heartless, gun-loving, violence-prone conservative redneck lowbrow like so many of those red state idiots out there.
Yeah, because the epitome of being heartfelt is referring to other people as "heartless, low-brow redneck idiots". I bet if you were filling up at a gas station in a red state and a gun-loving redneck saved your life during a stick-up you'd be pretty grateful. Or not.
No.. He's just someone who will cash their paychecks.
Good to know that liberals can still be condescending and bigoted.
Lets remember that the vast majority of violent films are made in Hollywood which is hardly a bastion of conservatism. Heck, how many actors, directors and producers have made movies that glorify violence and yet then go around talking about how evil guns are?
I will grant that Carrey took a step more than most... but then again his bread and butter has never been action films.
Nope, he's just another Hollywood liberal moron. I bet that hypocrite will still cash the checks for this movie though.
@Sokman....So go kill some babies and then have that broomstick shoved back up your gay a$$. We want you to feel better. Maybe that will help.
You sound open minded and willing to accept those who have different beliefs than yourself.
Take your spam and go kill yourself.
