'Star Wars VII' character breakdowns give a teeny bit of insight

The Rebel Alliance has apparently begun recruitment.

The website Bleeding Cool News reports that casting has begun in the U.K., and has posted confirmed casting breakdowns for "Star Wars Episode VII," pointing to a list of seven descriptions of possible character types, a sampling of which you can see below:

1. "Young 20-something male, witty and smart, fit but not traditionally good looking"

2. "A late 20-something male, fit, handsome and confident"

3. "70-something male, with strong opinions and tough demeanor"

4. "Late-teen female, independent, good sense of humor"

5. "A second young female, also late teens, tough, smart and fit"

They're admittedly vague descriptions, but they do give fans a little insight into what type of far, far away galaxy J.J. Abrams and writer Michael Arndt are planning to create. Up to this point, the speculation about "Star Wars VII's" casting focused on whether actors like Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, and Carrie Fisher would reprise their roles, but these new descriptions gives us an idea of who the new "Star Wars" characters may be.

That being said, fans may be more excited if the next casting sheet is looking for a "bounty hunter type, with cool helmet."

See? He's already ruining it. J.J. Abrams, the director who is into Action, Focus Groups, Zoomed in Cameras, and lens flares, is adopting yet another Hollywood bullship rule: that you have to have young people to attract young people.

    Bullship! There he goes again.

I don't care how much hype this movie gets. i predict a horrible crap movie like the last 3 Lucas star wars movies. Lucas knows very well how to make a brilliant movie, clearly he dumbed them down on purpose. Like almost all of them are nowadays. Haven't been to the movies in 2 years, later renting/viewing of "must see" movies at red box proved that was a financially sound decision. I even dropped my cable movie channels to save $8 that's how crap the movies are nowadays.

Oh, and J.J., stop the close ups with every other shot. I don't need to see the actor's pimples.

I wonder if J.J. Abrams will shine lights in our face for 3/4 of the movie like does in his Star Trek films? Point the lights away from the camera lens J.J.!

Sounds like a casting call for A New Hope except with Leia split into two younger people. Yawn.

I'm hoping and praying the new director tosses all those horrible books aside, and we don't see Mara Jade, the Solo twins, and all those characters. START OVER! START OVER! START OVER! PLEASE!!!! The universe since the "Return of the Jedi" is a complete suckfest.

The expanded universe is canon and approved by George Lucas. It will be incorporated into the new movies, like it or not. Chewbacca is dead shortly after the Yuuzhan Vong invasion of the Star Wars Galaxy. Whether this movie trilogy takes place before that or not is unknown, likely before.

I'd imagine way before that point. Too many new characters are included in the EU before that point. Hopefully they keep to some of the canon.

Not true, as explained here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wars_canon#The_Holocron

The highest level of canon is the movies, the novelizations of the movies and anything that came out of Lucas' mouth. Everything else is a lower rung of canon that is subordinate and subject to the core canon. The canon of EU material is tenuous, as evidenced by the fact that the prequels rendered a lot of EU material non-canon.

The expanded Star Wars universe is NOT part of the Star Wars universe. Get over it.

The 70's character is obviously Boba Fett. Then there is Jacen and Jaina. The second young female is Mara Jade when she was the Emperor's Hand. Scarlett Johansson or Isla Fisher are supposed to be current Mara Jade Skywalker. Timothy Zahn was asked to give a rough outline of a story. One of 6 canon writers asked.

Boba Fett?! It's obviously going to be Han Solo... Abrams has publicly stated that they aren't going to stay true to any Expanded Universe novels, and are creating a story set farther in the future. Jaina and Jacen and Anakin most likely won't be part of the story.

How in the world could Mara be in her "late teens" while Luke, who is supposed to be in the movie, is in his 60s? There will be no Mara Jade in this movie. All signs point to a completely different story from EU. I read a ton of those books, some good, some bad, and they were fun, but the movies are where it's at. I'm picturing young Jedi trainees, i.e., children of Han and Leia (not necessarily with names we recognize) carrying the brunt of the story arc, while the original cast play supporting roles. Luke will not have a woman at all and will be a hermit-like Jedi master in the mold of Obi-Wan and Yoda. And I'm envisioning a major character dying in the first picture to help galvanize and focus the new Jedi. Hopefully there will be no rehash plots of good turning to evil like they did in the books. Been there done that. I'm guessing the antagonists will either be a resurgent Empire or rogue Sith element or a combination of both. They could also include a completely alien invader type unseen in any other SW movie. There are many of these elements in the EU novels in some shape or form but look for the movie to treat them in new and interesting ways. And hopefully there will be more focus on character development and story than on cool things that can be made into toys for parents to buy for their kids.

I hope they try to make Heir to the Empire. Then the 70yr old would be C'Baoth.
