The Cannes Film Festival officially launched on Wednesday with the opening ceremony and the premiere of Baz Luhrmann's "The Great Gatsby."
As the stars took to the red carpet, including judges of this year's event like Steven Spielberg and Nicole Kidman, many huddled under umbrellas to avoid what ended up being a soggy opening day.
has released its 2013 lineup, and its opening film, "The Great Gatsby," is just the tip of the iceberg.
In addition to Luhrmann's adaptation of the F. Scott Fitzgerald classic, Cannes 2013 will also feature movies from Sofia Coppola, the Coen Brothers, Alexander Payne and James Franco. Here are a few titles that we're excited about:
Joel and Ethan Coen's "Inside Llewyn Davis," about an aspiring '60s folk singer/songwriter that stars Carey Mulligan, John Goodman and Justin Timberlake, has been selected to compete for the grand prize, the Palme d'Or (careful with the trailer - it includes strong language) ...
... along with "Descendants" writer/director Alexander Payne's road-trip drama "Nebraska" and Steven Soderbergh's "Behind the Candelabra," which will later premiere on HBO May 26.
Ryan Gosling's next buzzed-about movie, "Only God Forgives," is also in competition for the top honor. Written and directed by Nicolas Winding Refn, who also directed Gosling in 2011's "Drive," the crime thriller features the 32-year-old actor as a Bangkok-based drug smuggler whose mother urges him to hunt down and kill the person who murdered his brother.
Sofia Coppola's "The Bling Ring," which stars Emma Watson as a member of a thieving group of teens who steal from the famous, isn't in competition but it has been selected to open the Un Certain Regard portion of the film festival.
James Franco's "As I Lay Dying," which he adapted from the William Faulkner novel, will also screen during that segment of Cannes. Franco serves as director and stars alongside Logan Marshall-Green and Danny McBride.
The Cannes Film Festival, which has Spielberg serving as the head of this year's festival jury, will run from May 15-26. To see the full lineup, visit Cannes' website.
