You kind of hurt my feelings, Barbara Walters.
As you head off into the sunset of retirement in 2014 as the reigning doyenne of celebrity journalism, you had this to say to The New York Times.
"When I go there is not going to be any, 'Please can I have another appearance?' I don't want to do any more interviews," you said. "I don't want to do any other programs. I'm not joining CNN. This is it."
Way to dash my hopes, Ms. Walters. Given your storied history as a newswoman, from chatting up heads of state to asking Katharine Hepburn what kind of tree she would be, you have become more famous than even some of your interview subjects.
Which brings me to a painful subject: What will happen at the end of 2014 when we're ready to learn who the most interesting people of that year are? Who shall guide us?
Not to mention your co-hosts on "The View." You have been the calming voice of reason on the show since it first premiered in 1997 (has it really been that long?). Fans will never forget how you handled the return of Star Jones six years after she left the show (and not on the best of terms).
"Really because we loved you, we did lie," you said to Jones of her decision to not initially own up to the fact that she'd lost weight via gastric bypass surgery. That allowed co-host Joy Behar to follow up with a joke about Jones' book, "Satan's Sisters: A Novel Work of Fiction," about a female-helmed daytime talk show.
That was some good TV.
Now that you have given the world a year to absorb that you will be leaving, one wonders if perhaps you're allowing so much time because you're hoping someone, anyone, will convince you to change your mind?
It's just all very reminiscent of another powerhouse interviewer who said she was done and leaving after 25 years. You may have heard of her - Oprah Winfrey?
Like you, Winfrey also said she knew it was time to go, and then took her talents to her OWN network. You know, there's another network that also has three letters and knows a thing or two about longevity in the business.
I'm just saying.
