For the Internet, finding out the identity of Benedict Cumberbatch's villainous role in the upcoming "Star Trek Into Darkness" is the final frontier.
However, at one point even the "Sherlock Holmes" actor didn't know who he was playing.
"I didn't have time to read the whole script before I began," Cumberbatch told MTV News.
Even though the actor went into the project somewhat blind, what sold him on the film was "a very good pitch" from director J.J. Abrams on the phone. (And, of course, he eventually did get to read a full script.)
As far as who Cumberbatch is actually playing, no one on the production will dare say. Yet that hasn't stopped the online rumor mill from getting turned up to warp speed with suggestions that he's going to portray anyone from classic "Star Trek" villain Khan to an evil Jean-Luc Picard (the beloved captain from "Star Trek: The Next Generation").
Regardless of his role, Cumberbatch promises that the plot will satisfy.
"And it was interesting - I loved the story," he said. "It was so complex and intriguing and funny."
"Star Trek Into Darkness" premieres nationwide on May 16, and May 15 in IMAX.
