Catherine Zeta-Jones checks into healthcare facility

Actress Catherine Zeta-Jones is being proactive about maintaining good health.

The 43-year-old, who has been open about seeking treatment for bipolar II disorder, has checked into a "healthcare facility," her rep told CNN.

"Previously, Catherine has said that she is committed to periodic care in order to manage her health in an optimum manner," her rep added.

In 2011, Zeta-Jones, who is married to Michael Douglas, sought treatment for the disorder with a brief stay at a mental health facility.

Bipolar II, which the Mayo Clinic notes is less severe than bipolar I, is defined as "a pattern of depressive episodes shifting back and forth with hypomanic episodes, but no full-blown manic or mixed episodes," according to the National Institute of Mental Health.

CNN Health: What is Bipolar II

In the past, Zeta-Jones has said that she hopes her desire to seek help will encourage others who might be suffering.

"This is a disorder that affects millions of people and I am one of them," she told People magazine in 2011. "If my revelation of having bipolar II has encouraged one person to seek help, then it is worth it. There is no need to suffer silently and there is no shame in seeking help."

I think it'S good to go see a doctor and receive some kind of treatment after diagnosis. What really annoys me is the amount of 'self diagnosed' people who tell everyone the<y are Bi polar when they have never spoken to a doctor about it. Just because you can be moody after a night drinking or feel grumpy sometimes does not mean you have a mental illness – it means you're human.

As one who suffers from this same disorder, I am glad she is courageous enough to allow this very private part of her life be made public. More attention to this horrible problem may help find better medication, more ways to help those who have it learn how to control the behaviors, and help family members of those who suffer from this learn how they can best cope. This disorder affects everyone close to you not just yourself. Unfortunately having it can destroy your life with your behavior and destroy others. Good for her for not keeping this quiet!

It's diet related. Same goes with the rising epidemic of ADHD. Ironically the same chemicals contribute to both disorders.

ReelWorld: a good diet might help treating the symptoms, but it is naive to blame a mental illness on one's diet. I assume you do not suffer from a mental illness yourself, or have been by the side of someone who does. Therapy and medication are extremely important to the treatment of these people's symptoms.

A good diet and exercise only goes so far with BP2. I'm a male who was diagnosed with this as well (also have rapid cycling) and live a very healthy and active lifestyle. Unfortunately, it hasn't been enough and the disease does get worse over time when not addressed correctly. Certain foods/drugs (food can be a drug!) such as caffeine, alcohol, and sugars definitely can make bipolar symptoms worse and even turn BP2 into BP1 over time (alcohol and recreational drugs will easily do that over time and extended use). The right mood stabilizers and therapy are necessary in addition to a healthy lifestyle.

To all those who posted that oh this is just someone who is moody, too emotional, etc. all all other such garbage, imagine the following:

Being intelligent and productive but steadily becoming more and more distracted due to emotions, anxiety, & racing thoughts to the point of not being able to get daily important tasks started or completed. Imagine going from emotionally stable in your life to extended depressive or hypomanic episodes or even being both at the same time! Don't get me started on how terrible the suicidal thoughts are too with this. It's not fun and it certainly isn't an imagined illness. Definitely genetic as my mother has a host of mental health problems that she refuses to acknowledge.

There is no such thing as bipolar 'disorder' its just fancy word for depression. And why she depressed, her husband is dying, A person isn't suppose to be happy if their husband is dying or sick. I mean. no drug will eleviate the reality. Micheal looks like he dying. And depression isn't a illness it's a mental state to a depressing reality. it's a reality.

You are obviously ignorant when it comes to mental health. Depression is a generic term that is symptomatic of many mental illnesses. You're stuck on the fact that she's a successful actor married to another successful actor. A state of sadness and grief is a normal, and temporary, response experienced by all humans in appropriate situations. Clinical depression is abnormal, debilitating, and sometimes fatal. Even if its just wikipedia, why don't you do ten minutes of research before displaying your absolute ignorance of the subject.

My 20 years of chronic depression went away once I switched to a mostly vegan and gluten free diet. What we eat really matters. Our bodies are meant to eat whole-foods, lots of fresh vegetables and not processed food that's loaded w/chemicals and void of nutrients. Our bodies are starving for nutrients and it effects all aspects of our body, mental health included.

She is probably a jolly outgoing person but her reality is her husband is sick and dying. so depressed no drug can cure the depression. depression is natural mental state. I means if she isn't depressed and happy to see her husband dying or sick etc or about to die. then she has no feelings or care about her husband. cold heart. boys don't cry. rather drop blood and drops of tears. no tears as he die!

      May 1, 2013 at 5:29 am | Report abuse |
    • Corriebeth

@psychoscamdrugs. You are incorrect. SADNESS is a natural mental state. Depression is a disease. Numerous brain scans have proven the natural balance of neurotransmitters no longer exist in the brain of a person suffering with clinical depression. Also, clinical depression does not just happen during times of sadness but can also strike when a person is at their happiest. Medication does not make depressive individuals happy, trust me.mmwhat they do is help can the brain chemistry balanced enough to the person can properly deal with their life..happy and sad situations. Please do your research before shooting your mouth off. Depression is a real disease and NOT a natural state of mind.

A multi-millionaire celebrity who has everything anyone could ever want in life is suffering from a mental disorder and can get treatment wherever she chooses and on her terms. A typical hard-working American without insurance who has kids to raise, bills to pay, a mortgage, and a dead-end job does not have the same options. How is it in this country of plenty we screw the little guy over and over on behalf of insurance companies and pharmaceuticals? Why do Republicans hate working uninsured Americans so much? How can they be so-godless? Good luck, Catherine. I hope you find what you seek in terms of care and treatment. At least some folks are able to do that.

It's because they are influenced so heavily by the Koch brothers who advocate for a class of people whose sole purpose is to support the wealthy. Think slaves. And as long as so many people remain silent they will get their way (with their millions of dollars to spread around). We have many many people that are uneducated, drug addicted that contribute very little to society. How long are we going to support them and drive the middle class into the ground. BTW, being godlike or un-godlike has nothing to do with it. It's about power that comes from wealth.

i am bipolar 1 with rapid cycling. i was diagonsed when i was 25 years old. I am now 42. I had lost my family children home everything. i had almost lost my live to suicide. Yes this is a very serious disorder but can be managed if can find the right treatment. I had gone thru almost every medication treatment that i think was possible one medication taking then another to contradict another it was a mess. I have been stable now for about the last 10 years with just one medication we found finally that works. This disorder is very hard on family and friends and but with the the love and support we all get thru it. I still have ongoing treatment which is counciling and meet with psychiatrist on a regular basis which is a must to keep this under control.

When I was eighteen years old, I suffered a severe mental breakdown and was diagnosed with acute schizophrenia. That diagnosis changed in time to manic/depressive, then bi-polar disorder. I am fifty seven years old now. Doctors say that mental disease can be a genetic disorder. I think that is true. Doctors also say that "talk therapy" is helpful. I think that is true. Medicine never worked for me. Forcing myself to maintain social activities worked well for me. Doctors say that I am "high-functioning" because I was able to keep a job for 23 years. I learned, as the years passed, to recognize my mood swings (high or low). When I was "high" I got a lot of work accomplished. When I was low, I considered methods of taking my life and slept a lot. I think about suicide every day. I hope Catherine can find a way to cope with bi-polar disorder. I wish her well.

I would tend to agree that their extreme age difference is a big issue. If she married him for his fame & money, she has to deal everyday with the stress of whether she should have, what if she was in a better relationship with someone her age who is still hot & can do more things physically, & who she would have more in common. She has had her elderly husband battling a deadly cancer – talk about a wake up that you are not in an equal relationship & you are likely to be a nurse, widowed young, with children missing the old man. This is just reality. I've certainly seen it many times, as have most people. Very stressful indeed & stress triggers mania & depression.

Sometimes you have to use your brain and willpower and toughen up. Everyone takes pills for depression like zanex or whatever. Nothing but a bunch of whimps that disguise their problems with pills that just end up making them worse.

It's a disease, not subject to willpower. It's like telling someone with epilepsy to toughen up and stop writhing around on the floor when they're having a epileptic fit. I think you need better education.

First of all, I think it is pretty sad that this woman's privacy has been invaded in this way. Bi-polar disorder is a rough life sentence. I commend her on seeking treatment and the rest of us should just mind our own business. Remember, her husband was/still may be sick with cancer and she's got two young kids to think of. The media's coverage of this is especially insensitive given the nature of her illness. I wish her well.

You said, "a bipolar has a temper".

Sufferers of bipolar disease may or may not have tempers. Behavior depends on the severity of the disease (in general, Bipolar I is more severe than Bipolar II) and other factors that affect temper in people who don't suffer from Bipolar disease.

Or course, heavy use of Vodka will make any disease worse, including mental illness. And your point in the context of Catherine Zeta-Jones is?

I'm sure you know that there are other things besides heavy use of Vodka that can change the severity of a mental illness for the worse. Why pick Vodka out of all those other causes, and report it here?

Selective data mining is one consequence of using JUNK SCIENCE to reach conclusions.

You know, you could make a fortune as a climatologist. The profession is always on the lookout for good junk scientists.

Alcohol use makes both Bipolar II and Bipolar 1 far more severe on account of how it affects the brain chemistry. Worst possible advice ever. Even moderate drinking is a very, very bad idea fior bipolar NOS.

My wife was diagnosed a few years ago with Bipolar II after many years of being diagnosed with major depressive disorder. Ironically, a new treatment approved for depression, Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), has reduced her Bipolar II symptoms markedly. The treatment is expensive (and is not insurance approved for Bipolar II), but in my opinion, the decision to bear this expense has been a wise and fruitful one for us. It is not a "miracle cure" (patients still need to learn how to manage the triggers for their illness, and occasional "touch up" sessions may be needed) but the treatment has made her (and our) life much better. As with any medical treatment, YMMV.

During a woman's menstruation time, she may feel okay to be in company with an old man who loves her, but after her period, during her ovulation time, she would desire for a mate and not having a suitable man will put every woman in depression. I do not know if Zeta-Jones have one close friend in US; if she had parents in US, she would have long divorced her husband. Zeta-Jones does not know how to get out of her trap; she does not seem to have one good friend to help her out. I hope people who love her will help her get a divorce and start her life. She is too young to just wait for dying. I will pray for her.

I've always thought that Catherine Zeta-Jones was one of the most beautiful women i've ever seen. When I saw her marry Michael Douglas, I immediately thought "daddy issues". I couldn' imagine that being married to Douglas has been healthy.

Not when it has a predictable pattern and goes on for more than 6 months. I suffer from Bipolar II and it's draining and disheartening. You get just enough "happy" time to be aware that another "sad" time is coming very soon. It's like having a scabbed over cut reopened again and again.

It is not a mood swing. Having been married to someone that was bi-polar there are medical & psychological issues that go with it. Being left untreated can become dangerous for the individual and the people around them. Getting this type of issue into the public spotlight is a good thing. This country lags so far behind in mental healthcare it isn't even funny.

Good for you Catherine! You are a great example on the responsiblity of managing a health issue rather than letting it control your life and others.

In reading some of the comments of others, it appears that they need to educate themselves prior to speaking. They might be diagnosed with stupity.

Please, people, don't chime in about something you know nothing about. A bipolar disorder is not a thought disorder/schizophrenia. She is not "crazy' or in "a padded cell", but most probably needs to have her medication adjusted.

Actually, Bipolar I is most definitely along the spectrum of schizophrenia as it is a true psychotic disorder. The difference b/w Bipolar I and Schizophrenia is that people with BP 1 come back to reality after a manic/psychotic episode, whereas schizophrenics do not. We use the same medications to prevent mania (risperidone, haldol, zyprexa) In Bipolar 1's as we do to treat schizophrenics. It is 100% a thought disorder, but more so a psychotic disorder. True Bipolar disorder is not someone who is just moody. That is more like cyclothymia, which is also considered along the BP spectrum, but not true BP. Bipolar 2 is a disease in which someone who has major depression, but once in a while will have substantial amounts of energy (hypomania), but they never cross the line into psychosis, or true mania.

Bipolar disorder is no laughing matter. My sister is bipolar. It's all about staying on your meds. The scary thing is when a person, who is bipolar, is in the manic phase... they feel great and think... why the heck do I need to take meds? I feel great! And therein lies the rub. Bipolar disorder is a chemical in-balance of the brain. The meds help them maintain the balance. If the stop taking their meds or skip a dose here and there, they eventually lose balance and have an episode that requires hospitalization. It's an illness that impacts the entire family. I applaud Zeta-Jones for taking responsibility. I see stars like Lindsey Lohan and Amanda Bynes exhibit some of the same weird behaviors my sister exhibited just before she was diagnosed. I wouldn't be at all surprised if those two are also bipolar.

I wonder if she has to wear a straightjacket sometimes or maybe be in a padded room? I hope not. She is too pretty for that – and too rich. She should just be happy she isn't at work right now like everyone else and straighten up. Maybe go shopping or to the beach and be happy. Not the looooney bin.

It's things like this that prevent people from seeking treatment. The brain is an organ and it is just as capable of being ill as any other organ.

I'm not going to watch AMH season 3 if they cast Michael Douglas as some crazy woman again. I was ok with him playing the psycho nun in flip flops last season (I still get the creeps when I hear someone walking through the mall in flip-flops), but after seeing him play that nutty woman piano player in that new HBO film I'm just getting tired of him.

No it doesn't. The two conditions are unrelated. Also, one is not "nicer" than another. They are mental illnesses and are not "nicer" or "really really crazy". In fact both Bipolar II and Schizophrenia have numerous degrees of severity.

Learn to count higher than two. You may even be able to invent different modifiers than "nicer" and "really really crazy". Who knows, those modifiers might even accurately describe the severity of either disease – though it will be a completely random accuracy, since you don't know anything about psychology.

Yes, let's think about that family for a moment.
It's very likely that you or a member of your family will have a mental illness, short or long term, during their lifetime.
    For example:
If you have a family member in the service who has been deployed to the Middle East, the chances that they will come home with PTSD are frighteningly high.
Are you going to show your own blood this same contempt?
