'Iron Man 3' soars at global box office

"Iron Man 3" won't open in the U.S. until Friday, but it's already a hit overseas.

The third film in the "Iron Man" series raked in $195.3 million after opening in 79 percent of foreign markets over the weekend.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, that sizable opening was history-making for Disney and Marvel Studios, which put together the film on $200 million.

"Iron Man 3's" dominance also surpassed that of 2012's "The Avengers," as Joss Whedon's ensemble project earned $185.1 million internationally when it opened last year. As a result, some are curious if the new "Iron Man" movie could eventually surpass "The Avengers" $1.5 billion global haul.

Yet according to star Gwyneth Paltrow, who returns to the movie along with Robert Downey Jr. (Tony Stark/Iron Man) and Don Cheadle (James Rhodes/War Machine), this could be the three-quel's last opportunity to rake in the cash.

"They’ve sort of said this is the end for Iron Man," Paltrow told CNN earlier this month. "So yeah, I think it probably is.”

Cheadle's less certain, however, as he pointed out that big box office could always change the best-laid plans.

"Until this movie comes out and performs or doesn’t perform, I think it’s going to be a lot of seeing how people react and also what’s left to do," Cheadle told CNN. "Is there anything left to mine in the relationships between these characters? Is there some place to go that isn’t going to get covered in one of these other Marvel movies? If so, then he could return.”

And in the blogasphere 8 or 9 months ago the "mods" asked the $64K dollar question, "Will Pepper put on the suit?" Speculative comments poured in by the thousands. Now we find out, apparently she does!

And now they can't get the smell of fish out of it, even after steam cleaning and a hot, soapy wash.

Hmm, when there is no real story tying all these movies together, the sequels tend to be flops.

New Iron Man theme lyrics (sung to the tune of the old Spiderman cartoon theme)

    Iron Man, Iron Man,
    Does whatever an iron can
    Presses shirts, any size
    Unwrinkles pants, even ties
    Look out!
    Here comes the Iron Man

Can't wait to see it, myself. I mean... kinda hate the cliche'd Iron Man vs Iron Man plot from the first two movies (Seriously, Marvel... iron man vs iron man, iron man vs iron man 2, hulk vs hulk, hulk vs hulk 2, norse god vs norse god, super soldier vs super solider - can't you ever come up with a differnet superhero plot?!), but I still loved the characters.

One of the if not the WORST comic movies ever! This movie stinks something awful. Watched over the weekend and have no clue what these people are thinking making this movie. It had nothing to do with Ironman, I won'tt spoil it, but I throw this out there, Pepper Potts becomes a superhero, yes I said it, totally ridiculous. And as stated this will be the end of Ironman. This movie should be blasted by critics and fanboys alike it's horrible and has nothing to do with Ironman comics.

You should read Iron Man during the Dark Reign story arc. From what I've seen in the trailers the movie borrows a few elements (even Pepper in armor) from that story.

Seriously dude, chill out is just a movie and was quite fun to watch.
Who cares if it's in line with the comics? Those change characters and scenarios all the time and you could consider that this goes in line with the movies themselves not just the comics on which they are inspired.
People like you whining about these things just make people groan and turn away.
Remeber, it's just a movie and as long as you had a good time watching it, it has fulfilled it's purpose.

Actually just doing a quick Wikipedia lookup on Pepper Potts tells me that a large part of her history involves her getting 'powered up' and 'armored up'. Looks like you needed to do some research.

Jesse is right. This movie was terrible. Everyone gets to wear the armor including the president. The Mandarin character is turned into a joke. The movie borrows a little from a dozen different plots and tries to meld them together but it doesn't work. The are a couple good CGI moments but aside from that the movie stunk.

I love the Iron Man movies. They are my favorite superhero comedies. I'm going to Iron Man 3 this weekend where I will eat buttered pop corn and two boxes of Milk Duds - I won't be able to poop for at least a week.

Iron Man isn't gay like the Hulk.

  27. Overuse can have that affect.

Give it a rest for 30-60 minutes, then try again. Be sure to use a good, oil-based moisturizing hand lotion. This will not only reduce the potential for friction burns, but the oil creates an effective barrier to retain moisture.
