Zooey Deschanel gets an apology for being wrongfully ID'd

In the middle of the Boston Marathon bombing coverage last Friday, a closed captioning mistake added "New Girl" star Zooey Deschanel to the conversation.

Those who were watching Dallas-Fort Worth's Fox affiliate, KDFW, on Friday might've caught the closed captioning mishap. Although the screen was showing a picture of bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the caption identified him as "19-year-old Zooey Deschanel."

A photo of the mistake was posted to Twitter, where it was picked up by "Community's" Joel McHale and, soon, Deschanel.

"Whoa! Epic closed captioning FAIL!" the 33-year-old tweeted when she saw the caption.

According to the New York Post, the TV captioning service Caption Solutions has offered the actress a formal apology. President Kala J. Patterson said in a statement that they "deeply" regret and "sincerely apologize for this error."

The problem IS NOT the marathon bombing reference. It is with the AGE and the PLACEMENT. This captioning was supposed to appear on an Entertainment segment discussing her long run of bad acting. :)

I'm surprised Fox owned up to it at all.

If history tells us anything, their normal course of action would be to leak all this to Rush, Hannity, and Levin and let them accuse her also. Later, they would blame the whole affair on the "mainstream media" and Obama.

I think you need to spend a little more time reading the article before commenting you sheeple. Fox News doesn't do their own closed captioning like all major outlets. They contract it out to a third party, who probably contracts it out to a third world country. They screw up all the time.. just someone caught it this time because it was important news.. Tell me you closely read captions on your TV program. It is truly horrible if you do.. spelling is atrocious, and words and names are totally misspelt and the wrong words are frequently used because they sound the same, even though they nowhere near mean the same like allocate instead of eloquent.

She should.. the poor contractor would most certainly go out of business, because someone he hired probably from a third world country couldn't type, or was reading up about Zooey. That would cause a trigger effect, and cause several third world country employees to lose their well paying jobs, which in turn would put their whole families in poverty.. all because Zooey wanted a million bucks.. but guess what? She loves the publicity she can get from this, because everyone knows that photo is not Zooey, but guess what? You've talked about her, and now, you know her a bit more than you ever did.

It was a mistake by the captioner. They have abbreviations for people's names. She hit the wrong key on her steno keyboard and the wrong name came out. These captioners have to write at 200+ words per minute. One little mistake can spit out the wrong word or name. It was an honest mistake. I'm sure he/she didn't intend to put this actress' name on the screen at that time. The bomber's name was not in her database yet because it had just been released, so it came up as something else. It happens.

I totally agree with John...Fox News is a joke. They couldn't be more biased and socially irresponsible if they tried...in this case however, it is the fault of the captioning service, not the network.

But we're doing something here that Fox News won't allow on its web site...that being commenting on news stories. About six months before the election in 2012 Fox News began closing its comment forums for their news stories and now they are gone. Why? Because every story, no matter how mundane, turned into a racist rant against the president., immigration, and place for every birtehr to spout off, and it was embarassing even Fox.

CNN and MSNBC however, still allow commentating. WHy? Because their audiences are comprised of racist paranoid conspiracy gun nuts like Fox.

I like how everyone bashes Fox news all the time before being right-leaning, but no one seems to have any problem with ABC, NBC, CBS, MSNBC, CBS News, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Seattle Post, The New Yorker, The Huffington Post, Newsweek, Current TV, Comedy Central (the Daily Show and Colbert), The San Francisco Chronicle, ....and the list goes on and on.

Why Fox News seems to be the network du jour to make fun of, I have no clue. Fox News is one right-leaning media source in a sea of left-leaning media sources.

@Derek, my biggest problem with FoxNews is their unmitigated gall claiming to be "fair and unbalanced" when they are so obviously and admittedly slanted to the right. How is something that's slanted also balanced, and how is something with an obvious bias fair? Hmm? What's also laughable is Bill O'Reilly's claim to a "no spin zone" when that's all he does is put a right-wing spin on everything - that and rudely shout down any guests that oppose his viewpoint.
