But as the headlines piled up, Cruise kept grinding away, never losing his focus on the film, "Oblivion's" director Joe Kosinski told CNN.
"The great thing about Tom is he never lets anything affect the making of the picture," Kosinski said. "We worked through it and that's the way Tom is. ... He's so professional, dedicated and focused. We kept the film on track. His focus is about making the best film he can so we just worked and we worked hard."
The film sees Cruise portray a mechanic tasked with repairing broken drones on Earth after everyone has deserted the planet following a war with alien invaders.
"We shot this movie in 80 days, we traveled all around the world," Kosinski said. "I'm really excited for people to see his performance because we know him as this big kind of action movie star, but what they're going to see reminds us of what a great actor he is."
