Overheard: Anne Frank's stepsister backs Bieber

To Anne Frank's stepsister, Eva Schloss, the furor over Justin Bieber and a remark he left in the guestbook of the Anne Frank House is "childish."

Schloss, a Holocaust survivor who's written a recently released autobiography called "After Auschwitz," told the U.K.'s Telegraph that she agrees Frank might've been a fan of the teen pop star, as Bieber controversially suggested last Friday.

"Truly inspiring to be able to come here. Anne was a great girl. Hopefully she would have been a belieber," the 19-year-old singer penned in the Anne Frank House's guestbook, sparking an outpouring of backlash across the Web and beyond.

Critics, like commentator Dean Obeidallah, shook their heads at Bieber for being "self-obsessed" and narcissistic, seemingly taking little away from learning about the life and legacy of the young diarist, who died as a teen in a Nazi concentration camp in 1945.

But a few others came to Bieber's defense. Had Frank been born 70 years later, said one rabbi who's closely studied Frank's life, she would have likely been a "belieber," as Biebs' fans are called. Schloss, who was friendly with Frank while coming of age in Amsterdam and later became the step-daughter of Frank's father, Otto, agrees.

“She probably would have been a fan. Why not?" Schloss told the Telegraph. "He’s a young man and she was a young girl, and she liked film stars and music. They make a lot of fuss about everything that is connected with Anne Frank.”

Thats a shame. sure, i dont think he really should have written that in the guest book, but its his right. and if the stepsister of anne, who, by the way, might just know anne better than any of you crap-spewing trolls, thinks might have been a "Belieber" then thats the end of the conversation in my mind.

Justin Bieber is a psychopathic teenager which behaviors would not be tolerated by authorities if it were a community teen. The double standards the media, authorities, and other public figures have towards entertainment persons is shameful. If I were Anne Frank's family that stunt he pulled would be taken to the highest courts. I don't understand what all the fuss is about with Bieber. What kind of person behaves and insults others like this? This insane fame given to nobody's has got to stop. Has the world forgotten the talent of this young boy is singing?

I applaud Justin Bieber for bringing attention to the life of the extraordinary person who was Anne Frank as well as the terrible tragedy of the Holocaust (which destroyed the lives of millions of people, many not the different from Anne) in a way a certain audience can relate to. Also, Anne Frank's generation was really on the cutting edge of modern pop culture and the concept of the "teenager" . She would post pictures of actors and other celebrities at her well. She struggled with the changes of puberty, obsessed over her looks, and experimented with romantic relationships. I think Justin Bieber, intentionally or not, pointed out an important point–Anne Frank ( and millions like her) wasn't that different from us today. Her casual, easy, amicable, relatable style of writing makes those he read it truly feel a personal connection to this young woman–a connection that Bieber seems to have made and one that comes with the bitter sadness and disappointment of her untimely death–and a resolve to prevent such a wanton hate-based destruction of precious human life from happening ever again.

Oh I do not Beliebe this at all! This kid is nothing at all and the more he is making a name for him self by acting IGNORANT he is a nobody! He had made a comment at one time he did not like AMERICA! Well I can not figure why he does not go back home then? But he does not like us bet will be glad to take our money. This kid thinks he is so darn smart then why the heck is he doing crazy things all the time that are only hurting him. He needs to open his eyes and see what L . Lohan has done to her life by acting up! If the Beibs and not stand back and look all around and see what he is doing then he had better give it up now. As he is a looser and I do not feel that anyone from years and years ago would have liked him .... I do not think so . His head is really swelling up now. Grow up Bever! Oh and pull up your pants too while you are at it no one wants to look at your butt either.

Adam, I am devastated that Justin Bieber had the disrespect towards the Frank family. I would have liked to see an example made from this stunt once in for all. He should be taken to court and sued on behalf of Anne Frank's honor and the right for her dignity after death. The money could be donated to the Anne Frank estate, orphanages, or something like that.

The question is what would Beiber have written if he was just a Canadian tourist visiting Ann Frank's Museum if he were not a Singer with millions to his name? That is how Bieber should of seen himself when he wrote in that quest book. But no, he look at himself as this bigger than God like figure that for sure Ann would have been a fan. Justin is going to die young because he now see's himself as something beyond human. R.I.P. just saying.................

So because her stepsister said this it's now ok?

Anne Frank lived in a different time period. To say what she would have liked or disliked given she was born in a certain period is moot as then she would not be who she is. Anne Frank IS who she is because of when she lived. Her fate and her observations of the Nazi's Occupying Europe was from a perspective not anywhere near important to a little girl of the same age today. More then anything is simply seems like Justins way of saying "I really have no opinion on this matter so instead lets focus on what 'I' do not what she did." Who cares if she would have liked or disliked his music? That takes away the important point of what Anne Frank did. This is not about you Justin.. Wake up you little tool.

I think she would have been more embarrassed by the way we've started to demonize everyone for the smallest things in this country. A kid music star says he hopes that if she were alive today, she would like his music. That's it. And Americans are losing it. She was a young girl. She liked music. He would've been honored to have her as a fan of his music. He's not a "little tool." We have really beeeg problems in this country. This kid doesn't deserve this much hostility. It's unhealthy and totally misplaced.

Anne Frank was an amazing young lady and a very intelligent one. Other than, of course, to live, what did she want? She wanted to be a normal teenager and do what normal teenagers do. I can't stand Bieber/Beiber/whatever, but "normal" teenage girls are into this kid. And, someone stated she was too deep to like the lyrics. My guess is most people don't spend time trying to decide how correct the lyrics are. Perhaps Bielber does know the story of Anne Frank and writing that he hopes she'd be a fan meant that he'd be honored to have had her as a fan.

Because, Steve, it's still on the FRONT PAGE OF THE SITE. Your reading comprehension could use some work. The obvious gist here is that with so much IMPORTANT news happening right now, perhaps fluff garbage like this should be taken off the front page, and if that means removing the Entertainment section on the front page, so be it. Tens if not hundreds of billions of dollars of damage just occurred to a massive chunk of our country, and CNN barely covers it. Yet it covers "Anne Frank's sister likes Justin Bieber". Everyone seems to overlook, Bieber is not a 19 year old guy, he's a business. Even at his young age he knows what he's doing when he steps out into the public. I'm sure he slips up here and there, but not enough to cause any major unwanted waves. What he did at the Ann Frank House is PR, plain and simple. I doubt he knew the story would grow such long legs, but it's clear he thought he's advertising his brand. Was that tasteful? No. Shameless? Yes. All in all the Ann Frank name may profit more from the attention than Bieber because millions of fans now know who she is. Otherwise they probably would have never heard of Ann.

Ugh, you self absorbed little people. Get over yourselves. Why do you have such a high standard for Beiber to stand up to huh? Personally, I dont care for his current music because I feel like the public image that they have signed into a contract for him to uphold is a complete under minding of the boy's (though he is technically a man now at 19) talent and intelligence. Before you go spewing your ill-bred nonsense about what type of person he is, go back to the beginning. The little boy that we say on YouTube was of exceptional talent, very intelligent for his age, and showed a get deal of presence of mind that exceeds that of usual kids his age. Now think of his mother: my talented son has attracted a record label with his talent and they want to sign him on as a teen sensation. He will be all the rage because of his generic, easy to chant mindlessly to, clean, non-controversial music and even grown women will love him for that! Who wouldn't want their child immortalized in time as the Disney child who got it right and kept it "innocent"?! Sign me, oh I mean, him, up!

That boy is not stupid. I promise you, he knew what he was writing, just like he knew that he smoked some weed. Guess what. Lindsey Lohan is a walking meth lab. She's so freakin messed up, I'm surprised they don't have her in the basement of some drug dealer harvested the breath she exhales as a new drug. How about Miley Cyrus, who's the new official member of the Feeling Froggy Twerk team? Or better yet, the infamous (Oh no she wont!) CHRIS BROWN?! Guess what?! They are teenagers!!! (Except for Chris, he's a young adult but, hey, who really become an adult before like 27? Most people.) Just because they have money and are in the public spotlight, that doesnt mean they randomly stopped being human. Get over yourselves. In my opinion, Beiber has done well over the years at being an industry puppet and frankly, he sickened me for it, but I understand that he was a child when he signed his soul to the label and he must follow their rules until he is no longer bound to it. But don't be surprise that the "Beiber inside" is starting to leak out. He's in there: A very smart boy who does not give half a people having intercourse vigorously or without feeling about what you or anyone else thinks of him. He doesn't need you and your boo hoos, and soon he wont need those little screaming guuuurls either because he has true talent and when he gets lose, he's going to be a force to be reckoned with. Get your tickets now peeps, cause it's gonna be wild.

I'm sorry, get it straight. Anne Frank was 15 years old when she died. At best, she was a teenager, but I'm afraid a teenager is still a child, thus the term "girl" is appropriate. Quit belly aching over something that has nothing to do with you. Why dont you take that heart felt reply and use the energy from that to go say something about how your Senators and House Representatives just stopped a bill based on their own personal values instead of the peoples? Yea. Justin Beiber pens an actually well said sentiment in a book (yea think past your face and an article. That statement means more than she could have been my fan, It means hopefully, she would have been able to hold on to something normal during all that chaos, like being a fan of some teen pop star like other girls.)and you all need her step sister to tell you that you need a life? No thank you, move along, you're not needed here.

So many people want to hate on Justin Beiber, he's a kid and unlike many adults, he got it. Anne Frank was a human, a teenage girl and if he paid attention at all he knew she was smitten with stars and movies. The only thing this kid was saying was had she been allowed to live a normal life, she would have been one of those screaming kids at his concert, or a Beatles concert, or Elvis. Half the people who ARE enraged probably do not know the story of Anne Frank. Bottom line, she was a teenager, and no matter how much everyone wants to make him an adult now because he's over 18, he's still a teenager. Kids today are not held to the same standards as previous generations because parents are either afraid to discipline their children or they feel like they will hurt their feelings. Who do you think tells all those horrible singers who try out for American Idol that they can sing, then when they are told no by the judges, they implode? Justin Bieber is a victim of his generation.

No. What is objectionable is your depiction of the use of a perfectly legitimate word as having evil intent. Stop reading double entendres into places where there are none. 70. The Truth

Yes, Beibers comments were self serving. but without realizing it, he highlighted her humanity. She was just a girl. She was one of us and she is all of use. She wrote of liking boys and as her step sister points out, liked music and film stars. Why are we diefying Anne Frank? We should not take away her humanity. Doing so risks losing the lessens she gave us. This woman is right, they always make a fuss about Anne Frank, but we shouldn't do that at the expense of her humanity. She was just like everyone else and yes, should probably would have been a Belieber. In fact, I dare suggest Justin may have realized that. He was in the house for an hour. It is a moving experience. I was there and you think what it must have been like. You can't help but feel her prsence when you are there. I think he got it right....

I agree with you. I am not a huge fan of the "Bieb's" antics but in this one I thought the same thing. I would have loved for Anne Frank to have been able to enjoy the world of movies and music and teenager fun instead of having to deal with the horrible trauma and adult world she was thrust into.
It was a nice vision to think of her being excited at hearing the tunes of a pop star and enjoying the things that teenagers SHOULD have enjoyed.

Going to the Anne Frank house (or reading her diary), you find she was smitten with celebrities and movies. She pasted pictures she clipped from the magazines (fan magazines) over her bed in the Secret Annex. The family lived in decent place, with some comfort (it wasn't a closet) that over looked a central courtyard with a big tree. Perhaps this relative comfort gave them far too much confidence in getting through the war that way. Had it been more miserable, perhaps they would have plotted an escape (if possible). But in the end, their decency and humanity and cozy homelike (though under house arrest, so to speak) meant nothing to the Nazis, who didn't like to be fooled in their zeal to kill Jews.

Yes, she would have been a normal girl, like the Beliebers from Queens my niece met at her camp of mostly Jewish girls a few summer ago. I met these girls too. They were Anne Frank. So are all teenaged girls. Justin Bieber got it.

While yes, I agree that chances are she would be like any other normal teenager in the modern era and like his music... saying, "hey, she was a cool, hopefully she would have been my fan" is still a highly self-absorbed thing to say. There are millions (perhaps) of "beliebers" out there, and when visiting Anne Frank's museum the only thought he had was something you'd write in a high school yearbook?

He's 19, he's not that much younger than me. I am having a much harder time writing off what he says as "he's just young and childish" as a fair excuse. Honestly, Schloss shows tact, but Justin's comments were narcasistic, plain and simple.
