Shain Gandee was happy with life before death

If you didn't catch MTV's contested reality show, "Buckwild," when it premiered earlier this year, then you didn't know how adored Shain Gandee had become by the show's fans.

As news spread Monday of the 21-year-old's death, both MTV personalities and everyday viewers chimed in to remember the charismatic budding reality star.

Over the course of its 12-episode first season, "Buckwild's" viewers came to know Gandee as an ebullient young man, one whose "goofy smile and love for 'mudding,'" or off-roading, stood out among the show's nine-member cast, MTV says.

The TV series followed the group as they sought to entertain themselves in Sissonville, West Virginia, and Gandee quickly established himself as a favorite.

His nickname, "Gandee Candy," spoke to his social nature and charm, and better yet, he didn't appear to be playing up a character for the cameras. It may be called reality TV, but those who inhabit the medium are better known for "performing" rather than being true to life. Yet with Gandee, MTV notes, fans appreciated that he embraced who he was and "never [altered] his southern roots."

The 21-year-old, who was found dead along with two others in a vehicle that had been partially submerged in mud, was eager to work with his hands, according to a bio. Having held jobs in coal mining and as a garbage man, Gandee loved to go hunting, four-wheeling and "mudding'" in his free time.

Ahead of "Buckwild's" premiere at the start of January, Gandee told MTV that he was happy with where he was in life.

"Actually, my life's pretty fun," he said. "I don't want it to change."

The network renewed "Buckwild" for a second season in February, and according to the Hollywood Reporter, production has been suspended in light of Gandee's death. The network is said to be presently providing grief counseling for the cast, crew and family members involved.

As for "Buckwild's" future, THR says a decision probably won't be made for another few weeks. The series is produced by Parallel Entertainment along with Zoo Productions, and Parallel producer J.P. Williams told the magazine that they're "taking a few weeks to give the cast a chance to get a handle on this because they're devastated," and will later address "where do you go from here." Ultimately, Williams added, the decision of "Buckwild's" fate will be up to MTV.

The network didn't comment on the future of the show on Monday, but did express shock and sadness over Gandee's passing.

"Our main concern is for the Gandee family and their friends," a statement from MTV said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with them. Shain had a magnetic personality, with a passion for life that touched everyone he met and we will miss him dearly."

thats cold hearted he has a family and friends that are grieving for him right now and another thing
EVERY LIFE has value just because he wasn't a soldier doesn't mean he wasn't important to someone
(his family) being number 1 i just think you all should put yourself in his parents shoes and ask yourself if you

No one 'called' a soldier to arms. The military is as voluntary as working at Walmart. This could have happened to anyone's child and just because you don't agree with the way they chose to have fun, it doesn't mean that his death is any less important than any other American.

By the same token, 'Come On', just because he was on some MTV show doesn't make his life any more important than any other person, either. That's the point. Like it or not, there should be much more respect involved with a person dying at war defending your freeedoms than a kid who died "mudding" in the south.

It's sad this happened. The mayor is blaming MTV which to me is dumb. Salwa sold drugs because she wanted to.. Shane went mudding because he had all his life. If they had been riding a bicycle and gotten killed which happens all the time would that be MTVs fault? This wS a accident. No JEEP would have stopped this. For the guy that claims jeeps wouldn't have gotten stuck. There are TONS of videos on YouTube that show jeeps flipping and getting stuck. It could have happened to a old or new car. If your gonna plug a auto make or product here you go. Had they had onstar BEFORE they passed out they could have pushed the emergency button and gotten help maybe in time. Helicopters fly to rural areas quickly. I've been in a accident and onstar was great. They knew where I was and what part of my vehicle had been hit. That's technology. I won't own a car without it now. From what has been said tho it prob wouldn't have saved them. Carbon monoxide killed the,. The mud covered the tail pipe and when that happen exhaust fumes only have one other place to go. It's just sad but this happens every day by accident and MTV isn't involved. Hey weren't even there filming. I don't know if he is their only child but prayers to them and cast and crew. Shain had a magnetic personality. Just wanted to have fun.. Sad.

Teens and young adults need to learn to deal with death in everyday life, this might be a good medium to show how they deal with it and move on. 51. The truth

Personally everybody needs to sit back and think about everything. Its called television. Do you think MTV would rather film butterflies landing on flowers or people having parties and 4-wheeling. And just for the dumba** thats running their mouth about the confederate army and inbreeding....Go to history class...West Virginia was still part of Virginia when the Civil War happened which means....We were part of the north not the confederacy so get your facts straight before you run your mouth. In response to how Shain acted on the show, everyone but Shain and Joey put on an act. You want to know how I know....I grew up with the 3 that are truly Sissonville born and raised, Shain, Joey, Ashley. Ashley is even my cousin and were not inbred at all. Ive known Shain and his family his whole life. He never was much trouble but he would defend anyone and any belief he had no matter what anybody did, would say, or think. How Shain was on Buckwild is exactly how he was in person. He hated town, he liked to drink beer, and just have fun. He was dedicated to his life, family, beliefs, friends, traditions the whole 9. They are suspecting CO poisoning based on priliminary analysis from the coroner. There was no accident or drugs or anything in the vehicle and it was just stuck in a mud whole on the passenger side and they were unable to get it out. I just talked to Shain saturday and he was going to ohio to a store that was selling his families Gandee Candy which was something he had always wanted to do for his grandma and himself and said he was probably hitting the hills later which meant 4-wheeling. Dont even come on here running your mouth without having the facts first.

ACTUALLY Virginia was part of the Confederacy. West Virginia split from the greater whole of Virginia in 1861 at the onset of the Civil War and then became a state in 1863 during the war. Now you know...THE TRUTH.

"Go to history class...West Virginia was still part of Virginia when the Civil War happened which means....We were part of the north not the confederacy so get your facts straight before you run your mouth."

Uh... almost. Virginia was most definitely a member of the southern confederacy. But a Unionist movement in western Virginia organized West Virginia – which was admitted to the Union as a state in 1863. So while your overall point is almost correct, your history lesson is not.

    • The REAL truth

Umm, sorry but you need to go back to school and learn your history.

Virginia was NOT part of the Union (North) and was very much a CONFEDERATE state during the civil war. The confederate capital was even moved from Montgomery, Alabama to Richmond, Virginia. Please know your FACTS before you pontificate on a message board.

    • The real, REAL truth

What we now refer to as the north and south were complete opposites during the civil war due to a complete magnetic polar reversal in the late 1890s. What was then south is now north, and vice versa. To say that the North fought the South is now a misnomer, and very misleading.

On that note, more attention is being drawn to some guys who died four wheeling and appeared on MTV than all my friends who fought and died overseas, Thiis country is sick. Sorry for your loss but what about the thousands of Americans who died doing something selfless? Seems no one gives a rats A)$ and brings politics into it.

Does not matter where he is from, color of his skin, redneck or not.. MTV showed America what like really looks like in other parts of the USA. In Beverly Hills they pop pills and divorce, in Washington DC they do NOTHING, in Colorado they ski and in Texas they just discriminate no matter who you are. We are glued to our TV sets during wars and when a plane crashes, or we are watching them haul bodies of little children out of a mass school shooting. happens I've watched BUCKWILD, leave the good people of West Virginia alone. If you have not watched BUCKWILD or even Honey Boo Boo you have probably might not have had a look of what a "family" really looks like. Yes we laugh....yes I am sure they are laughing at themselves too. Let it be, show respect. If you don't like what you see on cable, UNSUBSCRIBE. Rest in Peace Brother and the rest of you....give up a dollar for a grieving family in Woflpen Holler West Virginia...and one more thing, they mayor is a DOUCH.

Maybe it's me, but why do all these reality shows showcase people who are partying (Jersey Shore, Bad Girls, Buckwild) or doing something illegal (Moonshiners), or screwing up the planet (Ax Men, or the one where they're looking for gold). I guess its boring to show folks are are doing good on this earth. Or maybe they're hard to find.

I'm still confused about the exact cause of death. I wonder why it isn't given. All I can figure is maybe they were knocked unconscious when they landed in the mud hole & the vehicle continued to run somehow causing carbon monoxide poisoning. Unless they were killed outright from landing in a mud hole. Again I don't know why the cause of death isn't given.

Of course, in the long run, it really doesn't matter how, only that they were killed and their families are grieving and heartbroken. I can't say I'll pray for them, but I certainly offer my deepest sympathy and hope that they get all the support they need to cope with this tragedy.

I think anyone that is from the south & lives in a small town can relate to this show. Most small towns don't have much to do for young people. They make their own fun. Whether is is turning a dump truck into a swimming pool or making a redneck slip & slide. I'm a redneck, doesn't mean I have a low IQ or that I am stupid. It means we like to have fun and in most cases make our own fun like some of the things that are portrayed on this show. Most people don't have disposable income where they can just go out & buy what they want. So we make do with what we have in creative ways. RIP Shain, you were taken from this world far too soon.
