CNN announces new morning showChris Cuomo and Kate Bolduan will co-host CNN's new morning show, the network announced on Thursday. Michaela Pereira will join as the show's news anchor. "I've been looking forward to this announcement since I first joined CNN," said Jeff Zucker, president of CNN Worldwide. "Chris, Kate and Michaela are a dynamic team that will give our viewers in America a new way to start their day." Cuomo joined CNN in January, having formerly worked at ABC where his roles ranged from 20/20 co-anchor to "Good Morning America" news anchor. Since joining CNN he has led breaking news coverage from the papal conclave in Rome to the State of the Union address in Washington. Bolduan joined CNN in 2007 and has co-anchored "The Situation Room" with Wolf Blitzer since last year. She also contributed to "America's Choice 2012" and serves as one of CNN's congressional correspondents. Pereira joins from KTLA Morning News in Los Angeles. "It is a huge opportunity to work on this new show," said Bolduan. "Knowing that we have the resources of some of the most experienced executives in the business, the backing of a brand like CNN, and to be able to sit alongside such great people as Chris and Michaela – I can't think of a better combination." Jim Murphy will oversee the program as senior executive producer, and Matt Frucci will serve as executive producer. The move marks Murphy's return to morning TV after more than nine years of leading top national morning shows including as senior executive producer of "Good Morning America." He also served as executive producer of the "CBS Evening News" and the executive producer of "CBS This Morning." Zucker expressed his thoughts on what he views as a winning team. "We were floored with excitement when we saw Chris and Kate together on screen, and by adding Michaela to the mix we feel we have something very special," he said. "We believe there is an opening to do news in the morning with a fresh, new voice." The show will air from CNN's New York City studios and is set to premiere this spring. |

Chris Cuomo is a great addition to CNN. He did a super job in Rome during the pope selection. I would like to see some other great journalists get a shot at daytime. Don Lemon, Fredericka Whitfield, Martin Savidge and Jim Lacosta are too good to be mainly on weekends or doing remote shots. They are far better than some of the pretty but "lite" journalists who have daytime jobs and say silly things and laugh too much. Giddiness and speculative comments are not examples of good journalism. Also, Christine Romans is amazing and did her best work with Ali Velchi. He really knew a lot about the finacial situation. Too bad he's gone,. Other top people gone are Kyra Philips and Erica Hill. Both had credibility. Jake Tapper seems solid and his show is getting better. Until CNN is more careful about reporting the TRUTH, it doesn't matter who is on the screen. They have lost so much respect and credibility since goofing up the health care supreme court result, getting so many facts wrong about the Newton shooting, overblowing the Benghazi "scandal" (even having a reporter break into the crime scene, steal a personal journal and publishing the contents!), and now the terrible Boston bombing reporting. Actually the jokes at the news media dinner last weekend were spot on. I was so disappointed in CNN's coverage of Benghazi because they constantly had Issa, King, McCain, Graham, Chavez and others on who were on a witch hunt before the election hoping to derail Pres. Obama but the voters didn't buy it. After the election they continued it to try to tarnish Hilary Clinton who they are scared to death of in 2016. Now they are bringing up Benghazi again. Pathetic. When the bombing occurred in Boston I wondered how long it would be until they blamed the administration. They never care about getting the facts or making systems better. They just want to blame the administration. Actually every time McCain, Graham and others open their mouths it probably brings more people to the Democrats because those guys are poster boys for the angry, white Republican party. Please CNN stop being so speculative and quit using your "sources". When ever Fran Townsend speaks of her "sources" or gives her opinion I turn the channel because she was a security advisor for Bush!!! Nuff said there. I used to like CNN but need to see some hard facts, solid journalism and credible anchor men and women before I become a follower again.

The problem was not that Soledad was contentious. The problem was that in a one on one live interview, she seemed scripted, resorting to scripted soundbites and superficial. Her forte is feature journalism. I wish her well, while I am glad that CNN is making a fresh start.
Soledad was engaging. A straight talker. I really believe the new show leaves much to be desired. Bring her back!

Growing up on Spiderman comics led me to appreciate good news reporting. It is important to take good pictures for journalism. I guess that woman that is to be a new face could also be a weather girl. Weather girls are attractive. However, it is important to speak the truth because that makes good reporting. They said the new faces knew how to ask the hard questions. Let us hope they show the paparrazi that the news are not to be taken lightly.

Have been a dedicated viewer for many years. Nothing against Chris or Kate but have a feeling that's going to change. There's a reason many of us don't watch morning shows like GMA or Today. Don't care about the latest fashions, don't care about cooking recipies, don't care about celebrity gossip. We just want the hard news reported by intelligent, reputable journalists. I stopped watching cnn when bill hemmer left and switched to Fox to watch him at 8am

So... what will be the focus of the show – news? analysis? features? What is the show called? When will it be on? Is it truly a "new show," or just a re-tooled current one? Is CNN so confident in the personalities of their on-air talent that the content or focus of the show is irrelevant to a story about a new show? I read this article, I see priorities that are diverging further and further away from my own as a news consumer. Namely: News Information. Content I'll be looking for elsewhere.
I laughed this morning as i read this. CNN is simply a product with a singular out dated format. No matter how much they "shake" things up, this company is not about real news. It's in the same category as FOX. There are far better news sources available online and twitter is better, faster and "with the times" for late breaking news.
CNN thinks this is a pageant show and loads up and pretty faces with little journalistic integrity and substance. CNN wake up, you're out of touch, fresh talent is needed not the recycled shuffle that the over educated one idea minions keep trying and failing at. Clean house and revamp, or keep falling behind. Start with the afternoon shows, they're horribly boring and wanting!!!

I never watched the show (nor any other morning news), but I feel bad for Soledad. She actually held peoples feet to the fire and asked (gasp) follow up questions, like journalists used to.
But its all a numbers/ratings/money game, and CNN's Morning Show was not bringing in the money. Can this new team do it.
I would actually love to see a US version of Euronews. There are no on-air personalities, only news videos with voice overs commentating. No Ken or Barbie Dolls, shouting matches, or walk of the set theatrics.

I will keep an open mind but if I had my "'drothers" I would prefer to see Carol Costello replaced and Ashley Banfield sent back to HLN. However I suppose that even though he was at least 20 years ahead of his time, Paddy Chayevskey, sorry about the spelling, got it right with NETWORK. News is now about ratings and sad to say CNN, which, in my opinion, had been one of the last holdouts for unbiased reporting has now "joined the mob" !
Carol C and Ashley B are great anchors. They are natural and unpretentious.

I'm trying to influence and inform my news source, CNN, of my opinion in the hopes of having programming I find more enjoyable. It's kind of the purpose of this forum. So I won't watch if Cuomo is around, or the girls are not serious enough, but in the mean time I'll continue to post here in the hopes of preventing that disaster. But of course you new all that NY, you just like to troll around these things and get snipey. That's cool, entertain yourself.
Mr. Zucker...CNN is a news network. Please stick to that format. The last thing viewers want or need is another fluff and enterainment morning show like Today or GMA. There are many of us that just want hard, factual news and don't really care about the lastest fashions, popular recipes or celebrity gossip the other morning shows dwell on. Big mistake in letting Soledad go! Consider adopting the slogan: "Serious news for serious people".

Please don't start another fluffy morning program. That's how I'll wind up turning off the tv and tuning in to NPR or some other source. Soledad really was the right choice for this job...
I will third Mike! The problem is, there is no originality anymore. So copy and try to make this a celebrity based, pretty faced news channel. Imagine if someone who worked at CNN said, let stick with real news and did just that? Wow. Tabloids did their thing, CNN did news. Not world news in 2 mins, real news, changing hourly, not recycled from show to show, hour to hour. What a concept....

I like her style of reporting for a more in depth story. I agree, when I want bits of news, I just want the facts without an opinion. Carol Costello, the anchor in the show after Soledad's, is a bit too sarcastic, but CNN is the only station I listen to. So, I deal. Hey, I couldn't anchor at all!
@Smithsc – NOT TRUE. Solodad embraced her blackness after the Katrina disaster. She saw all those black people suffering and felt compelled to make a difference. I certainly agree with you on the how the news is presented these days and I too missed the days of getting the news and only the news only at 6pm and 11pm.
I hope this announcement means that Kate B. won't be doing the Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer anymore. She is a very attractive woman, but I want more than good looks in my news presenter. She can't string a sentence together without fumbling over her words and she has a habit of interrupting Wolf, which is also very irritating. I use to be a loyal Situation Room fan but now I end up changing the channel after a few minutes because of Kate's delivery. Let Wolf anchor the news alone, please!
Michaela was horrible with KTLA and when she did the Rose Parade from Pasadena. Horrible! I can't believe that CNN would even consider her for an AM show. Actually didn't know CNN had a morning show. You think viewers weren't watching before, wait 'till she goes on the air. The public will change the channel to HLN or other quicker. What a waste!

Piers Morgan is balanced and logical. He is one of my favorites. Some people that think that only American's can do anything and only the Old West way of thinking is the right way, might have a problem with him. Personally I think a lot of the old way of thinking is what is ruining America. We have to be progressive with our thinking or we get past by.

I hate morning shows. They are for entertainment now news. Himbos and bimbos on all networks. Lets get some real news with real anchors. No giggling,no drama, no celebrity news. I agree. NPR and BBC are about the only place to get real news now. Viewers are to blame.
I agree about Erin Burnett off the air. Soledad did a great job, I will miss her. Also am glad that Chris is back on the air, now all you need to do is get Ann Curry over to CNN and I will be happy.
Hey! Whatever happened to NEWS in the morning. Sadly, I've left CNN in the mornings. I now listen to NPR. I can get actual news there not fluff and commercials every other sentence.
So CNN continues its decline into just another entertainment network. When Ted Turner was in charge, it was 24-hour news, and the best international news coverage in the business. Now, although the international division is still the best, the domestic division has become Entertainment Today, with a few Reality Shows mixed in. They seem to be desperately trying to make various people inot "stars" and you can easily watch CNN daytime for an hour or two without any hard news stories interfering with the "fluff." I knew when they started letting their "news anchors" plug their own CDs and books that they were no longer concerned with journalistic standards. Disgusting...

I have been a loyal viewer of CNN since it signed on. Please, please, please vary your re-broadcasts of special reports (in particular "The Atlanta Child Murders" that were on again Sa/Su 3/23 – 3/24). I was hoping to catch a re-broadcast of "81 Minutes" and was dismayed that "The Atlanta Child Murders" were repeating again. Or, how about re-broadcast Jake Tapper's interview with Peter Bergen that aired this week (3/25)? I work full-time and miss some of the better interviews. I am so tired of seeing Piers Morgan repeats all night long. Thank you!

Agreed. Soledad was THE reason I tuned in to CNN mornings. This and their sympathetic attacker coverage of Steubenville OH made it clear...they're not on my priority watch list anymore.

This is about the 10th different morning show in 3 years. CNN is pathetic! They should just let Robin Meade do the news....they're only worried about ratings right? Robin just does the news, without the stupid opinions...and she looks great doing it too! And CNN ruined the rest of Headline News anyway. The only time worth watching that channel is first thing in the morning.
Seems very retro – that could be good, but is probably bad. Retro morning show – with new tech – how intelligent and insightful for 1990. A new morning show with a similar format to other morning shows might make some money – there will be viewers if you have enough coverage – they are the media. It won't be enough to challenge Morning Joe – a ratings powerhouse for politics and top news, and a few other of the fluff morning programs. If they were tech and business focused with some in depth analysis – that would get me to change my viewing habits. Let's see what this powerhouse team brings to the morning table.

That's what CNN needs to destroy what little credibility they have left. Ms Bolduan is a young, inexperienced broadcaster who has trouble reading a simple news update without tripping over her own words several times. Her claim to fame is sitting next to Wolf Blitzer (not that sharp anymore either) and repeating or agreeing with everything he says. Soledad O'Brien may not have the most sparkling personality but she is a good reporter and broadcaster and should have kept the morning show. Please, bring back Ted Turner to return CNN to its respected former self.

Well, he didn't yell at Oprah. (Wasn't THAT one a real stemwinder?) Maybe he only shouts at *little* people... I don't know. I don't watch CNN.
I like Soledad, but hated the change. Who wants to hear all those mouths that early in the AM? Not me. If I had the money I'd re do ANC, all news channel and actually do news and not spend hours on 1 story. Remember HeadLine news? It was news, weather, sports all in 1/2 hour. They recycled the stories and it worked, for people like me who just want news and don't consider celebs or the royal family news and I don't care what they did. That why you have that 2 minutes at the end to kill, with that nonsense. Morning shows suck and even BBC doesn't spend as much time on the royals as GMA does. So another program I won't watch but again these shows seem to be aimed at people who don't work...continue.
I also liked Soledad when she was a science reporter. But when she started to criticize an author when it became very apparant that she had NOT read the book, and then started to just read Democratic Press Releases I gave up. We used to watch her on the TVs in the Gym in the early morning, but everyone demanded that the station be turned to ANYTHING else. Headline News and local news got the call on all channels except for ESPN and Fox and VH1.
I will have to find a new morning show.. Fox?

I never really enjoyed Soledad style or show and stopped watching CNN in the mornings.
I realized recently that it wasn't just the mornings; there was some sort of spill over effect where I wasn't watching CNN much at any time of the day.

Perceptions clearly vary; before she took over the morning show, I had never thought of her as "asking tough questions" and I really had the impression that her show was because they wanted a morning-show instead of the morning news.
Solidade asking tough questions... that's a joke. She towed the liberial talking points very well and did her job to gain democatic votes buts she's a sad case of a reporter. Never had a good grasp of the facts from opposing view points only hers. I enjoyed the John Sununu smack downs.

I saw a recent commentary about this intended change at CNN and apparently they have been concerned over the manner in which Soledad asks the tough questions. Clearly they are looking for a morning show rather than a news-focused show by choosing three non-threatening and inocuous characters as the front faces. It is a cowardly move putting her out of the lead seat; something I think they will regret within the first two weeks.
Soledad is one one of the best news reporters and interviews on TV period. She's got insight, integrity and a willingness to get THE REAL STORY. I just hope CNN isn't letting her go? If they do, they'll see their integrity slip big time.
I think Kate Bolduan is the game changer. She can make the show super or drag it down. Good luck!

Just look at the quote from kate Bolduan: "Knowing that we have the resources of some of the most experienced executives in the business, the backing of a brand like CNN, and to be able to sit alongside such great people as Chris and Michaela – I can't think of a better combination."

Agreeing with the Carol Costello comment. When I'm home during the day I usually keep CNN on, but I turn off the sound when she's on so I can keep up with the news without having to listen to her pablum. She's so insipid it's disgusting. Every time she sighs and tilts her head about something in the news I want to scream at the TV that CNN needs to replace her with a real journalist. And I'm getting tired of Wolf Blitzer too. I actually enjoy political coverage, so I watch his show, but I should start a drinking game for every time he either reminds us all how important he is or every time he repeats words. "The Senate today passed - PASSED!!!! - the bill, and when we come back we'll have my interview with a senator - SENATOR - who supports the new law." I'd be drunk by dinnertime.
It's interesting that changes in CNN staffing is considered news that CNN should cover. It's also interesting that this important news is being covered in the CNN Entertainment section, which would be the appropriate section, since anything that you see on CNN is for entertainment purposes only.

I am very sorry to see Soledad leaving the program. She is an excellent, charming yet tough journalist. I doubt I will enjoy my coffee watching CNN after she leaves.

With all due respect to Michaela Pereira, she is nice but not a top-notch news anchor. I recall when KTLA first brought her on air and wondered what were they thinking. She lacks a dynamic on-air personality.

I disagree wholeheartedly. There is a reason that she has been on the show for 9 years and she is leaving on her own terms. You don't want a news anchor for a morning show. A simple talking head. Morning show anchors do not simply read the prompter and report on the news. You have to have the flexibility, knowledge and experience to talk about any topic, from fluff pieces about puppy adoption to hard hitting news about an abduction of a child. She brings that and a whole lot more.
Well I liked Soledad and tough questions she asked. So i guess i will be moving onto ABC or NBC or CBS whatever is out there. Not interested in this bunch at all.
CNN is completely going in the wrong direction. Just call it FOX Lite. I can't believe they would even consider changing Starting Point. Soledad O'Brien may well be the LAST tough as nails, call it like you see it, JOURNALIST CNN has. I and my partner will no longer be watching anything on CNN (everything else had already gone to crap) save for Anderson Cooper on NYE. Which, come to think about it, I'm sure won't be around anymore either.

Hey CNN: Will you please STOP. In recent memory, Kiran Chetry let go. CNN starts "Early Start" (News from A to Z, Ashleigh-Zoraida). Next thing, Ashleigh is somewhere else and John Berman becomes the co-host. Now there's all these new shows coming out. I don't care much what you do as long as: 1. Leave "Early Start alone. 2. Keep Carol Costello, Brooke Baldwin, Asleigh Banfield, Poppy Harlow, Alison Kosik and LEAVE ERIN BURNETT and OUTFRONT alone.
I quit watching after Kiran Chetry was tossed. Since then it's been back to C-Span.

Reports are coming in that Soledad is to become the next Obama press secretary. The President was heard to say that she has basically been doing the job for several years, so it's only right that she should be appointed.
The problem is, ↑, that you think you are the political center. Everyone does. I do. None of us see media bias unless its presented outside of our acceptable range of what we view as being correct. This is the whole problem in trying to debate the issue of media bias. All media news these days has bias in it. If you think people like Soledad O'Brien are unbiased, then you are delusional. Her bias has been openly exposed in the past.
This will be a wonderful show, although I will miss Soledad's positive energy. More than that, I think it will be a severe blow to "The Situation Room"-Kate makes a perfect complement to Wolf on that show. I've never seen a better team, able to reach all demographics and discuss all topics with experience and insight. Poor Wolf!

Chris C. needs a co-host that lightens his intensity – he needs to relax his eyes - maybe it is just the New Yorker in him or he is trying too hard. Best segment he has done was the 20/20 piece on hotel scams. I have given up on network morning shows for news; maybe I expected the wrong thing. Back to radio I go and listening to Rush for my entertainment.

I've always like Soledad; I like John Berman, and I think their format is interesting. I hope Soledad will continue to do specials or some reporting for CNN. It's my favorite Cable station.

That is what made Soledad good, she was not rude, but confrontational. she would not let any politicians get away by not answering her questions. I bet, you won't see that with these new people. In order to be a good journalist, you have to take risks in your reporting. and apparently CNN doesn't want its reporters to come out and challeging the people that they interview.
I don't disagree with you, she was good at that. I just feel she went over a line quite often and was very rude with people with whom she disagreed. BTW, I agreed with her positions most of the time including the times she was rude.
Soledad was only confrontational with those who opposed her pro-Obama views. She wasn't even good at hiding her bias, unlike other journalists.
I'm going to miss Soledad 😦 Nobody else can bring the news and cover current topics like she does! She's not afraid to "go in" and seek answers to questions that other journalist would tip toe around. From young children to the elderley, to local, state or world leaders. She is able to bring the facts. She is remarkable at what she does and I wish her all the best! As for the new morning hosts...I have no clue who they are nor do I care to know who they are.
I challenge you to watch the Situation Room and when Kate B talks – count the number of times she messes up her "read". It's beyond annoying and will send me to another morning team. Jeff – do you watch Situation Room ? Are you serious?

The recent addition of Jake Tapper is similar but seems aimed at a younger, hipper–yet intellectual–crowd. Every time I see someone cursing CNN on here, I give the network a 1.

CNN is guilty of what all once venerable news organizations do these days; making news reporting entertaining for the already jaded and mindless masses. I used to enjoy the reporting here as it was up-to-date and factual. Now like the other sources on TV, it is all about entertaining idiots who unfortunately perpetuate the newer and lucrative part of the US economy. A portion of the GDP that actually has no real value and will be recorded for future citizens to laugh during their history studies. Wake up America. Dancing with Stars and voted for Idols are will not sustain our economy.

I am not going to say or comment on these new people, but, they better be a lot better than what we have today., One of the things that I like about Soledad, is that she becomes qyite confrontenational with many politicians, and i haven't seen that too often in many of the journalits that we have today.

Loved Kyra, not so much Soledad glad she is leaving. Would love to see Kyra back on CNN – HLN is just commercials with a little programing. I watch CNN a lot in the mornings but avoid Soledad. Carol is just terrific – smart and funny don't change her! Soledad is good on special reports but not daily like she is.

I would have never expected that I would be a regular MSNBC viewer. CNN has really gone down hill since convincing themselves that they had to start competing with the right wing lunacy on Fox news to improve right wing viewership. You can't expect to be the most trusted name in news and routinely ignore facts at the same time.

It is kind of hard to focus on what they are trying to deliver when they do 35% show and 65% commercial. I spend most of the time surfing to another commercial on another channel and forget who the anchors are. Selling product is the emphasis.

I really like Soledad's show and the format. I have grown to quite like her, very personable, not unecessarily slick and honest. I hope that this does not affect her 8am slot.
Add as many pretty faces as you like but CNN has become 'a talking heads' network. People with opinions spouting off and cheaper than having real journalists on the ground.
