'The Walking Dead's' loose cannon

[Note: This post contains spoilers for the March 24 episode of AMC's "The Walking Dead."]

Going into Sunday's "The Walking Dead," I wondered whether someone would come to save Andrea, and whether Milton would continue to sabotage the Governor.

We didn't get an immediate answer to either question, although I suppose we'll get some resolution next week with the season three finale.

But we did get an answer to one of last week's burning questions: Will Rick attempt to deliver Michonne to the Governor? The answer: Kind of.

While at first it seemed like Rick had decided to turn in Michonne to save the rest of the group (did Hershel put him up to this?), he finally had a change of heart.

Merle explained the torture that the Governor could deliver on Michonne, and then compared Rick to the Governor himself. But what really sealed the deal was seeing Lori in a vision, and perhaps feeling a little judgement.

Psalm 91, which Hershel read to his girls around a prison table, is all about God delivering the believer from violence and sickness. Very appropriate to the zombie apocalypse, and also a good backdrop as the scenes rolled back and forth to Rick's third sighting of Lori.

Merle's last ride

Being a lone wolf, Merle wasted no time in making a fateful decision to go after the Governor alone. And not knowing of Rick's change of heart, he tried to redeem himself by letting Michonne "off the hook."

Let me say that again: Merle was trying to redeem himself. I did NOT see that coming.

In true Merle style, he went about it by smashing her over the head and kidnapping her - although he did later let her go on the side of the road.

You know what else happened on this episode that no one saw coming? An engagement!

Glenn first asked Hershel for Maggie's hand, and then proposed to her. He didn't get down on one knee, but it did the job. Also doing the job was that huge rock on the ring that he cut off from a zombie lady. Diamonds ARE forever!

But back to Merle's attempt at redemption. No one liked Merle, and I'm not even sure Merle liked himself. He was just one crazy (and creepy, and violent, and all-around a*hole) guy along for a crazy ride. And then, after the whiskey was gone and he'd killed at least four Woodburians and the Governor had bitten off his fingers, the ride was over.

Michonne made a comment to Merle about how hard it is to live with oneself after all of the tough choices and the tragedies, and it must be. Yet it was apparently too hard for Merle, who - still battling a fierce meth withdrawal - decided to make a suicide run for the Governor.

But wait! Before meeting his maker, Merle had a few good rock-n-roll scenes. He slayed zombies with Michonne's katana, drank whiskey while jamming to Motorhead and cruised on a sweet ride with a zombie parade all the way to his spur-of-the-moment drunk ambush.

I did love the aftermarket stereo system on that old '80s car that Merle hot-wired. I was surprised that the battery on a car like that would still have any power left after months of no use, but I'll suspend my disbelief because it was such a great prop. (Here's a tip for next time, show producers: You're in the South. How hard is it to find a decked-out Monte Carlo SS with 20-inch rims for our heroes to slay zombies with?)

Daryl finds his big brother

At the end of the hour, and after looking for him all day, Daryl found his brother. Kind of.

Undead Merle was located ripping the flesh off one of the Woodburians he shot during his ill-fated ambush. Daryl, being the more sensitive little brother, turned on the waterworks and continued to woo everyone, ever.

Was it fate that Merle wasn't shot in the head? I wouldn't put it past the Governor to leave Merle behind like that deliberately. It was ironic in that Merle himself once said, as he put his knife-hand through a just-killed fellow Woodburian's skull, "We don't let our own turn."

The end of the Ricktatorship

Rick bequeathed his reign and returned power to the whim of the group when he asked for a vote as to what they should do next: stay and fight at the prison, or leave to fight another day.

I felt relieved that Rick owned up to his mistake of not telling everyone outright the outcome of his chat with the Governor. I remember thinking at the time that the smartest thing to do would have been to air that out immediately after he came out of that barn, for everyone there to hear. If he had, maybe Andrea wouldn't be posted up on that dentist's chair.

Speaking of her, did Milton save Andrea while all this was going on? What's going on in Woodbury? We didn't get one peep in there!

So what do you think will happen in the finale? Will the gang stay and fight off a siege, flee while they can, or strike first? Upload a video with your finale predictions, or tell us what you think in the comments.

I can see a few more ppl dying in the finale. Hershel, Maggies little sister and Judith I can see gone. Andrea will more than likely be around til the end.. I hate the way they changed Tyreese character on the show.. not at all what he was in the comic book. But the show is great.. comic books are just better. I suggest reading them!

@Paul. That would be kind of neat.

Since Merle was killed off last week, I bet no one much will in Sunday's episode. It wouldn't suprise me if Maggie got shot or bitten though. Especially after getting the wedding ring. Shows like to do that for some reason.

in one of the earlier seasons they said the virus is air born. so even with a natural death someone would still turn.

According to the wiki, the 1918 flu pandemic infected 500 million people, including Pacific islands and the Arctic, and killed 50 to 100 million of them. In some towns and villages only a few people survived. So it is possible that a zombie pandemic could kill most people, leaving only a few alive.

The Governor should maybe catch a bunch of walkers then put those protective police helmets or motorcycle helmets (with face shields) on them. That would protect their heads from getting smashed in. Then he could release them in the prison.

I hope no one rescues Andrea in the final episode. While the townspeople are attacking the prison, Michonne should sneak into the town and set it afire. She is the only one brave enough to actually do anything now that Merle is gone. Rick is a weak person. Darrel is only good for shooting squirrels with the crossbow. The rest are whiny and useless. It would be poetic justice if Michonne totched the town with Andrea the betrayer still in it.

  26. Kind of funny

Having watched again the first 3 episodes last night people kind of forget just how bad Merle actually was. Deep down at his core he's a racist/bigot. Oh sure, he has a decent conversation with Michonne in the car, but there is no real inclination that he has changed. Then they kind of gloss over all that in the end and make him a hero.

The other thing to notice is just how lame they have made the zombies from season one. In the first few episodes you see them climbing chain link fences like are around the prison, and in the case of breaking into the store you actually see one using a big rock to smash the windows.

Huge difference to what they are now. I just never noticed that before.

The zombies used to be awesome. Fearsome and feroceous creatures. Now they walk into pointy sticks and get trapped. It seems the only way one can hurt you is if you get bored from them and fall asleep and one of them bites you in your sleep. The whole show has become just a soap opera with silly marshmallow zombies.

My understanding (not sure if this was the case in the comics) is that the zombies do actually weaken over time. It's been over a year now; they're more decayed. They've been through a winter. Now when you hit their heads, they explode like melons. They used to give some resistance. I assume that's intentional.

if the zombies have to p!ss and sh!t? They ingest "food," so to speak, so it stands to reason they that digestion would occur. Do you think the just stop, drop trou and vacate their bowels and bladder? Or are they just so far gone that they soil themselves while walking around?

I would say just soil themselves. I mean they do "eat" food but if they cant talk or "think" for themselves I would imagine them to consider actually dropping their pants and squatting to p.oop.

internal organs cease function upon death. only the brain is active. no digestion occurs. Maybe decomposition occures that breaks down some of what they eat, but since they feel no pain or anything, they would eat until the stomachs expand so much that it tears open from too much volume or it piles up in the esophagus. Remember, only the brain works as far as orgasn go. The more you know (cue the visual fx).

Kind of what I was thinking. You see everyone and their grandma from Woodbury attacking the prison, only to appear to find it empty. Smart move if they bailed on Rick's part since Woodbury on top of the vehicles and numbers of people being far superior also have stolen military hardware such as explosives, grenade launchers and the humvee with a .50 cal. Hopefully they did booby trap the joint and kill a few of the governor's goons.

They should have free reign to sneak into Woodbury and get Andrea and possibly Milton. Of course the smart thing to do would be to setup an ambush of their own and once everyone comes back kill the governor and his main lieutenants so no one else wants to continue the war against them. As long as the Governor lives, war will be inevitable unless they pack up and leave. And if they kill the Governor, then his top lieutenants will continue the war on his behalf, so you need to kill them too.

It was confusing to me. Where was the little baby and why wasn't she helping out the group? If she is just going to lay around and not be helpful they may as well give her to the walkers. Maybe the group could throw the baby to the walkers as a diversion to help them escape. Or maybe they could give the baby to the governor so he would leave them alone. Kind of a peace offering. Him and Andrea could raise it like it was his little girl. That would be sweet and make up for Michonne murdering the governor's daughter.

Australia is a neat place. I wonder if the zombie apocalypse spread over there too? They need to show other places and not just Georgia.

OK, Giving up the baby ? Not going to happen. Rick doesn't seem to have much to do with the baby, but Carol, Hershal's daughter and his son do. Although it is an interesting question what they will do with the baby. I don't think the audience is ready for a baby to be killed. Now as for "Murdering" the governor's daughter... She was already dead so can it really be murder ?

I was very surprized and dissapointed in Rick. His values have always been spot on. But 2 weeks ago he left a hitch hiker who was running after his car & screaming for help. You would have thought he would have at least checked him out. And now, he was planning to turn Mishawn in to the torture chamber. She is one of his best assets due to her loyalty and great fighting ability. I think we all knew that he would not go through with it but the fact that he planned it wa extremely out of character.

Why doesn't it rain? The only episode I've seen where it rained was in Atlanta, when rain washed the zombie guts off of Rick and Glen when they were trying to escape. Think a main character is going to die next week, just can't decide who it will be? Maybe Milton will try to save Andrea, and die in the process....

It never rains in Georgia. Or almost never. My friend lives there and he said its like Arizona but with cotton fields instead of desert. They use irrigation systems to water their fields and farms. I'm glad I don't live there.

Please, SOMEONE do something with Daryl's hair. Weirdist hair ever.

Let's hope Carl joins Andrea in the chair and they both get sent to the land of the undead. 2 more irritating characters I can't think of.

Love, love, love this show! But I'm having trouble understanding why there are no cell phones. They have power so they could charge the phone or simply use a car cell phone charger. The satellite and towers shouldn't be affected by the plague. What am I missing here? Can someone explain so I can put this to rest in my mind?

    March 25, 2013 at 2:41 pm | Report abuse |
    • Really?

There is almost no power, except for generators in the few tiny little encampments like Woodbury. There certainly aren't any network engineers to keep something as complicated as the cellular telephone network operational. Do you honestly think all the tech just runs by itself every day with no maintenance what so ever? Why does Verizon pay network engineers all that money if the system is truly hands off?

Basically your comment is dumb and you should feel bad for posting it. You have lowered the collective IQ of the planet.

You can't be that dumb. Who's maintaining cell towers during the ZA? Of course they can use walking talkies and lots of spectrum should be pretty clear.

One thing I wish they'd run into is a ham radio(with you I think I need to explain that it's not made out of ham). But an amateur radio where you can communicate with the rest of the world, even in an apocalypse. We'd get a better understanding how the ZA is affecting other parts of the world outside of Georgia.

I say they escape but maybe with a few more casualties. Sorry to see Merle go though, a loose cannon can be fun and useful. But I have no idea if Andrea will make it.

I was definitely shocked by last night's episode, and saddened. Merle wasn't a very likeable guy, but he did attempt a heroic sort of end. He had redeeming qualities underneath it all. And Daryl....I just wanted to hug him. Very good performances last night on the show. I'm really looking forward to the finale.

Me too. I teared up at the end. Such great acting. I could really see Merle struggling during the conversation with Michonne in the car. Merle was a great character that you never knew what he was going to do. Love this show and cannot wait for the finale.

Yeah you got the sense there was still some good in him underneath it all, Darryl saw that too. I think even Michonne saw it. He was a loose cannon, but as he showed by planning a single person ambush on a whim and him killing 8 (and should have killed the governor too if it wasn't for the zombie) he had very sound military tactics and was a great asset to have when you need to fight a war. They will definitely miss him, but perhaps Rick will show some tactical planning and setup an ambush of some sort to take out the Governor once and for all. Glenn has shown he is capable of being tactical as well.
